DVD-RW lost in space

My DVD-RW is not showing up in my computer, device manager or in ATA channel.
It appears in bios, and will work once in a while for a few hours and then disappear.
I have tried all the microsoft fixes to no avail
My machine is a Dv6718ca
Any ideas?

Yes and none of them are very happy thoughts. The AMD version of the dv6000 series is prone to motherboard chipset failure and one symptom is disappearing peripherals like wireless cards and optical and hard drives.

  • "Lost free space" on TC 500GB; Finder tells 148 GB, Terminal 250?

    Hello,
i wonder about my TimeCapsule 500 GB. About 100 GB free space is lost in space.
If I press CMD-I in the finder, my sparsebundles size is about 148 GB,
if I look using the terminal i find 250 GB.
If I check using the airport-utility, about 100 GB are missing.
(Both, iMac and Macbook, use the same TC for Backup.)
The given size for the macbooks sparsebundle seems ok, about 90 GB.
How to repair, detect, fix? Is there a reorganisation-tool available?
    Thanks for any hints.

    Hi,
Have you received any responses at all to this? It doesn't seem so.
I have exactly the same problem with a 1TB TC and my wife's MB C2D. It had some problems backing up for a while (apparently due to all the wireless issues being reported on these discussion boards - and NOT due to DNSchanger, I've checked). After I managed to get it backed up again by plugging in direct and left backing up overnight, it is now reporting that the backup disk is "almost full". However, there's over 450GB of space left and my MacBook Pro, which also backs up to the same TC is not reporting any issues.
If anyone knows what the solution might be, please let me know.
    Rgds,
    Guy

  • Lost disk space after formatting drive

    Hi folks,
about 2 months ago I bought an 320GB IDE drive for my win machine. Recently I decided to put it in an old FW case to use it for TimeMachine. The external case always did an excellent job so far. When mounting the drive, I could see it was 320GB. I reformatted the space to OS X journaled and now it is showing up as being 128GB. Reformatting with GUID or MBR, just to check if that could be the problem didn't bring me the lost space back.
    Any ideas?

Some external cases have a size limitation on them. The chipsets inside.
    nerowolfe replied:
I thought that was only with Winders FAT32 stuff.
If that is the case, it may be possible to partition the drive into 2 pieces, each below the max.
I believe that in some cases (pun intended!) the limitation is that the older chipset does not have enough bits allocated in its silicon to address the greater capacity of larger drives. If so, partitioning or the file system installed won't matter -- it still won't be able to access any part of the drive at the higher addresses.
In this respect, it is much like the 32 bit address limit of FAT32, except it is in hardware instead of in the file system specification.

  • Lost disk space after each reinstall.

I've had to reinstall leopard on my macbook three times in the last week for different reasons. After each reinstall(erase and install) it appeared that I lost a little more GB to the HDD. I have a 250GB HDD, and I know it actualls reads as 232.87, but without uploading any media and only using the reinstall disks that came with the box, I have only 218 or so GB. Is this normal? I can't find the numbers anywhere; they just don't add up.

My guess is that you have added up the sizes of the folders visible in Finder at the root level of the drive (Applications, Library, System, & Users) & compared that total to the total space used on the drive. The two numbers will not match because there are also hidden files & folders at the root level of the drive that Finder does not normally show. The hidden items are necessary for the proper operation of the Mac & in normal use are managed by the system. Since users should not tamper with them directly without good reason & it requires expert knowledge to do so without breaking anything, they have been made invisible in the Finder view.
It is normal for the drive space used by these items to fluctuate, & for the total to grow somewhat after first installing the OS. Some of the items contain temporary files that are created & destroyed as needed. Some contain usage, crash, & other informational logs that are managed by routines that the system automatically runs periodically to keep their total from becoming too large. Others contain initialization data gathered over time that the system uses to start up or to run processes efficiently.
Thus, there is no fixed correct number for their total size since that depends on the history & current state of the machine. On my iMac G5, one large hidden folder ("var") currently uses about 1.05 GB of drive space, but consider that only a ballpark number since it may be considerably different on different Macs at different times.
If you are still concerned about the health of the drive, especially that something is eating up disk space unnecessarily, then run Disk Utility to check it. In the "First Aid" tab select your drive & click the "Verify Disk" button. If this reports no problems then you can be pretty sure there is nothing to worry about.

  • Cannot burn dvd not enough free space

    Burning Preperation Error
Not enough free space for encoding the remaining assets - I presume it is talking about my macbook pro hard drive - The DVD has 4.7 GB and I have a 730 MB movie

you post on a wrrong place but anyway. The iDvd first prepares the video in your hard drive than burns it on dvd so check do you have enough free space on your HDD

  • Lost disk space

Hi, I've just noticed that the hard drive on my iMac has lost hundreds of GB of space in a few days.
I used "WhatSize" to find out there is 336 GB in a file called xxxxiDisk.sparsebundle/bands which is in the Library of my Home folder.
How do I get this space back? Because its in the iDisk will I lose the contents there?
    Appreciate help. Thanks

The first thing you need to do is backup your data as my FAQ* explains someplace separate from the iDisk:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once you do, post in the .Mac Sync forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957
As someone there would be more able to tell you how to turn it off without losing data.

  • Lost HDD space

    Hi,
I was using Azureus bittorrent when I lost a couple of gigs of harddrive space. The files to be downloaded were to be put straight across to an external usb drive I have.
This hasn't been a problem before but it just went crazy today and all this space vanished...
Any tips? I'm finding it quite hard to work out where this can have gone.
going to try posting this in the ibook section as well.
    Thanks

    this was really useful
    however
as it turns out the files to be copied had been hidden in a hidden folder called Volumes. setting finder to show all and then removing this cleared it up
    thanks

  • Lost in space!

I have a mid-2007 20" iMac with a FULL 329gb drive. iTunes movies and music are the biggest spaces takers.  Aside from buying a new iMac (which I'll probably do next refresh), what's the best way to solve the drive space problem?  I appreciate the help!

You will need to remove some files in order to free up space.
If you have some movies or music you don't need at all, just throw them away.
If you need the files infrequently, you can burn them to CD or DVD and then remove the originals from the hard drive.
If you need them frequently, get an external hard drive (firewire is best). Copy a bunch of files, like the movies, to the external drive than remove the originals from the internal hard drive.
An external firewire drive is probably the best option, since it will allow you to use it also for backup purposes. Get a decent sized one, say about 1.0TB. Partition it - set one partition at about 400GB, and the other(s) at a convenient size. Clone your interenal drive to the 400GB partition - this will give you a bootable backup. Use the other partition(s) for additional file storage, to free up space on your internal drive.
Remember when deleting files that you need to empty the Trash after dropping the files into it.

  • CS2 Version Cue: lost work space. (???)

Safari was crashing and error was wrong flash player plug in. SO...
I reinstalled flash player, then doing some things with the software apps and did a hard disk test, I did 'something' wrong. My computer crashed and when I restarted it, I had a totally different screen configuration. It was like starting from scratch. Lost a lot of stuff.
Safari browser bookmarks and bookmarks bar was gone, all folders in Mac Mail gone, even messages. It's like everything was wiped clean. I do have the information on my hard drive and trying to restore things, BUT... Now...
Safari crashes and gives me error message about needing Version Cue CS2 work space to run. I don't know what this means.
I must have thrown something out that had the work space with it? I was being so careful what unneeded excess stuff I tossed.
Went to Version Cue console.log this morning and this is what it says:
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 (Build 8S165)

I can't reinstall just Version Cue, but I can uninstall it.
From what I understand, and that's not much being I'm not computer literate, CS2 needs Version Cue? Even though I had it turned off? (me thinks)
Can I uninstall Version Cue and still use all my other software?
I've had CS3 on my bookshelf for years. Never installed it because I wasn't sure how without messing other things up. Not sure what I would need to back up, etc.
Does CS3 have Version Cue? Would uninstalling CS2 and installing CS3 fix things?
My Processor is PowerPC, not Intel.
I am so frustrated and don't know what to do. Can anyone help me out here as to what I can do to make Safari happy?
    Thanks!
    PJ

    No bites yet. Okay.
    Simply put...
Can the rest of CS2 and Safari run without Version Cue if I uninstall it? Yes or No.
Does CS3 have Version Cue? Yes or No.
If I uninstall CS2 and install CS3, will Safari be happy?
I'm getting myself into a mess here without help cause I'm frustrated. Really need some help.

  • Lost free space after an "Erase Free Space" procedure

I just ran the "Erase Free Space" application from the Dick Utility. The erase failed and now I have ZERO free space available. I am now showing that all 111g or used oposed to roughly 50% prior to the Erase Free Space. I have found a few articles trying to explain what to do but, I have been unable to locate the empty temp files that we created during the Erase Free Space, so I have been told. Can anyone help me resolve this solution and restore my free space?
    Thank you,
    Shannon

WhatSize should be able to find the temporary files
    <http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/>
You could try the Erase Free Space from Disk Utility on the install DVD. It might delete the files when it finishes.

( I know this post probably shouldn't go in this section, but no one looks at the boot camp section)

What/how are using to find and delete the partition?...Boot Camp Assistant or Disk Utility?....don't know if I can help...

  • Why does simply copying a DVD report "not enough space"?

This is a mystery - it should be so simple but it's not... anyone know what's wrong...?
I have a DVD which I burned myself - a simple data DVD. I wanted to make a copy of it so, in Disk Utiity, I did the following:
    - Insert the source DVD in the drive
    - Click "New Image", thus creating a .dmg file on the desktop
    - Select this new .dmg image in the panel on the left
    - Select "burn" and insert blank DVD when prompted.
Result: "Destination disk has insufficient space".
Exactly the same DVD media, exactly the same DVD drive. I have tried it multiple times and as an experiment I also tried it with a different source disk - a CD in that case, copying to blank CD media. Same problem. What can possibly be wrong?
    Thanks!

Well for example the .dmg file for the CD is 549,812,289 bytes (549.8 MB on disk)

  • Window lost in Spaces!

I've had this Macbook pro for 2 days, never used a mac before but have plenty linux experience. I started by fiddling with preferences, and turned on Spaces and Expose, being used to similar under Beryl.
I turned the machine off, satisfied I'd set up a nice and somewhat understated interface. When I came to turn it on the next day, imagine my surprise when I couldn't open any directories or Systems preferences folders! After some more fiddling I found all the open windows by clicking on "Spaces" in the dock. It opened a screen with a dark background and all the windows I wanted on it. But clicking on any one of themdoesn't open it, just sends me back to the blank desktop.
So next I tried to reinstall Mac OS. Drastic, yes, but I cannot afford to lose more hair than the bloodied chunks already removed. Unfortunately, it isn't made as a live cd, or even to boot - you have to double tap (or click) and then run it. But when I open it, there's no dialog box on my desktop. It appears in Spaces limbo, but I can't touch it there.
I've tried everything I can find via google.
Any ideas ppl? Please? Beginner begging here!

It is very hard to guess what you mean by this. Did you try to boot from the system DVD disc that came with your Mac or something else? If you boot from the DVD, you are running its version of Leopard, which is completely independent of anything on your hard drive, including any Spaces or other preferences you might have set up for the normal (or any other writable) boot volume.
A general suggestion: don't think about OS X as if it were a close cousin of Linux. The closest ancestor of OS X is the NextStep OS, a Unix operating system +based on+ the Mach kernel & source code from BSD Unix. However, the OS X kernel is XNU, which stands for "X is Not Unix."
To get an idea of how XNU relates to other kernels, especially those with a UNIX ancestry, check out the brief overview, XNU: The Kernel.

  • TCS 2's Original DVDs are lost:

    Hi there,
I've lost the original DVDs from the Technical communication Suite 2.0.
I've contacted Adobe systems & they sent me the TCS 2.5 Backup DVDs.
With the 1st DVD there is no problem.
Since in Version 2.5 following softwares have new versions,
    Captivate 5
    Photoshop CS5
the problem is, I have the license for TCS 2.0 which supports
    Captivate 4
    Photoshop CS4
& during the installation of Adobe Photoshop CS5 "Backup DVDs TCS 2.5",
    I get the message:
    - This serial number is not valid for this product. -
I also received another download version of Photoshop CS4 from Adobe,
but the Serial number "TCS 2.0" does not wort.
I guess the Photoshop CS4 is standalone, & that's why it does not work.
Since 2 weeks ago, I've been calling Adobe systems, & yesterday I just gave up.
Untile today I saw this forum & thought to give it a try.
Adobe does not have the Backup DVDs for TCS 2.0.
Adobe has sent me the Download Version of TCS 2.5 & Backup DVDs. They do not work as I mentioned.
    So,
    if anyone
has the Trial DVDs TCS 2.0 or
has the Backup DVDs TCS 2.0 or
might have upgraded to 2.5 or 3.0 & DOES NOT NEED the TCS 2.0 DVDs,
    may help me out.
    Platform: Windows
    Language: English
    I will appreciate any help.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi everybody,
    it's gone baby, gone:>
I just received a 30 Day Trial Version from a German Company.
I was searching in google & since I also know German, I thought, let’s give it a try & searched it in google Germany. I found a blog, which belongs to a German company. Back then in 2009 the company got 20 exemplar of TCS 2.0 30 Day Trial Version & sent them to their customers. I wrote them & explained the situation & happened to be lucky. In fact the got 1 of them left.
I really appreciate their 1st Class HELP.
Yesterday I received the package “Original Adobe TCS 2.0 Paper CD Sleeve with 2 DVDs”& installed it.
During the installation, there is a step, which asks whether you want the software as Trial “30 Day” or put your serial number. There was no problem with my license “Had registered under my name.” & I’m enjoying it.
I though, If I share this issue, it may help somebody or at least gives some clue how to challenge such a thing.
