DVD-RW Media

Just attempted to back-up my iTunes inventory to DVD-RW media. The drive takes in the disc, then spits it out a moment later. The media is DVD-RW 4X. Is this the incorrect spec for my super drive? The iMac is 15" G4, 800 Mhz. The super drive is pioneer 104 with the firmware update installed. It seems that I've read somewhere that DVD-RW @ 2X is the fastest this drive will support, is this why??
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Well, I went out and got some 2x DVD-RW media and it seems to work great. So I suppose I've answered my own question.

  • Can't import from DVD-R or DVD Ram media from Panasonic Camcorder

I recently bought a Panasonic DVD VDR-D300 camcorder. The device accepts DVD RAM, DVD -R and DVD -RW media. The camera comes bundled with software from Pixela Corp. that allows me to download media to my hard drive (I am using a 1.33 ghz G4 Powerbook with a 60 GB HD, running OS 10.4.5). The Panasonic camera uses MPEG-2 compression. The hook-up from the camera to my powerbook is USB (no firewire supplied). When the camera is hooked up to the Mac, Apple DVD player opens and controls the camera -playback, eject, fast-forward of the media in the camera, no problem. When I want to import the footage into iMovie to edit, the files are not recognized. Doesn't matter if its DVD RAM, DVD -R or DVD -RW media - iMovie can't import it.
I really like the camera - it's got 3 ccd's and looks better than other camcorders in its class. We've got an 11 month old and the main reason we bought the camera was to make movies on iMovie to show him later on down the line. I've got calls into Panasonic about this, but so far nothing. If I can't get it to import into iMovie, I'll probably have to return it for something more mac-friendly.
Would appreciate any and all input on how to remedy this issue. Thanks!

  • IDVD and DVD+R media

    Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could help me. Recently I bought a whole pile of DVD+R discs, however, I find that whenever I go to burn an iDVD project using the DVD+R disc it brings up an error message after it has burnt the disc. I have also noticed that it takes forever to write the 'Lead-in'.
My PowerBook Superdrive definitely supports the DVD+R media as I can backup using the Finder as well as read DVD+R discs burnt using my Acer.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stu

    Stu,
then I'm going to go out and purchase another brand of DVD+R to see if it makes a difference.
What's your fascination for DVD+R? DVD-R and DVD+R are just format wars equally royalties for companies... As I mentioned, DVD-R has been more compatible with DVD players. This advantage is being reduced with newer DVD players built to play both formats; much like the DVD-Audio and SACD format war is leading to "universal" players.

  • Drive keeps ejecting Blank DVDs but will read DVD with media in it

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

  • Why can't I append-to-disc on DVD+R media, 2009 Mini w/10.6.3?

I want to be able to burn multiple sessions to DVD+R media on my late-2009 Mac Mini w/ Superdrive.
PLEASE do not direct me to the usual instructions on burning multi-session CD-R media. I know all about them; they work fine for CDs, but not for DVD+R (so far.)
When I follow the usual make-a-disk-image-from-folder-then-burn procedure, "leave disc appendable" is greyed out in the pre-burn confirmation dialog box.
Yet, when I display the disc information, it says the currently-inserted media is shown as APPENDABLE (see below.) I'm using Verbatim-brand DVD+R 4.7GB single-layer discs. What's going on? Why won't disk utility allow me to leave the media appendable for later sessions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I will say that I do not have a lot of experience with burning discs. I have burned maybe a couple of dozen since burners became available in Macs.
I know that the System Profile shows that your optical drive can handle a selection of DVD disc types, but I had heard that the best disc types are those that match the drive's type, and are usually listed first. You have a DVD-RW drive, but you are trying to use DVD+R discs.

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

It identified write restrictions, but my goal was to write a playable DVD and it fails in both my SuperDrive and off-the-shelf DVD players.
Thanks for the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the issue in this case. Is there some basic compatibility issue with using DVD+R media as a playable DVD for most off-the-shelf players?

  • Blank DVD-R Media becomes unusable over time

Lately I'm experiencing problems with DVD-R media after it has been stored in my house for more than 6 months. Both my iMac and PowerBook reject the blank media. I normally use jet-ink printable disks from TDK, Sony and Verbatim and they all refuse to function, even my LiteOn DVD Recorder Model 5045 does not recognize any of those disks.
If I use media purchased recently instead, everthing works fine.
Is it possible, that high humidity, or my wireless router (D-Link Model DI-524) which is located in the same room could cause this problem?
    Has anybody experienced simular problems?
Any advise in this regard would be most appreciated.
    Regards,
    Hank

    Has anybody experienced simular problems?
Yes. This is actually a common problem especially with bulk grade medias which often use lower levels of organic dyes. Much less of an issue with name brands like Verbatim, Maxell, Ritek/RiData, etc.

  • MacBook Pro won't read DVD+R media?

I have a first gen MacBook Pro, 15" 1.83GHz Core Duo processor with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive.
I have a number of data discs that I have written to DVD+R media (using another computer). When I place them in my drive, the MBP doesn't recognize the disc. I also have some DVD video I burned on DVD+R media, and the same thing: the MBP won't recognize the disc.
Anyone know why? It can read DVD-R just fine, but I haven't yet gotten it to read DVD+R at all.

I use a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo and I am
experiencing the same issues where this MacBook will
not recognize Memorex DVD+R 4x discs burned on a
Lacie external 16x drive. Unfortunately for me, all
my backups over the last year are on these discs,
which seem to work in every other player or Powerbook
I have needed to load them on.
In general, Memorex uses the cheapest quality media possible to maintain their price point. Usually, this means Ritek and Prodisc media, which both vary widely in quality. Sometimes the media is great, other times crap.
Seems like the MacBook Pro drive has issues reading crap discs unfortunately.

  • Best brand of DVD-DL media to use?

My MacBook Pro has a model MATSHITA UJ-868 burner in it. When using Toast, I keep getting errors burning DL DVDs. I believe the problem may be the generic media I am using. What brand of DVD-DL media works best or successful with a MATSHITA UJ-868 burner?

    Hello there,
I have yet to burn a coaster with the Imation brand. All of the family use them and pretty much all my customers too - Not one single failure so far ( 1000's of burns )

  • Re: Toshiba & DVD Lightscribe media

    *TOSHIBA & DVD LIGHTSCRIBE MEDIA*
I have heard that Toshiba have no introduced DVD Lightscribe software (to personalise blank cd/dvds) as OEM software. Is there any way i could get this on my Satelite P series without buying an external drive?

As far as I know for Lightscribe functionality you need special optical disc drives that support this option. It is not known to me that Toshiba ODDs support this, so Im afraid you need some external solution (external drive).

  • Maxell DVD +R media not burning

I've read through several different threads in here and haven't really gotten an affirmative answer because there appear to be mixed experiences with DVD +R media and the 17" iMac G4 Superdrive.
I bought a 10pk. of Maxell DVD +R and attempted to burn a slideshow movie on iDVD but the disk just sits in the drive for a few minutes before it finally gets ejected by the computer. From what I'm gathering here is that some DVD +R media can be read while others can't. Others have even said that only Apple brand DVD media can be read by this Superdrive. Still another person said that this particular Superdrive can't read any DVD +R media at all, but only DVD -R.
So my question is this, can I purchase a non-Apple brand DVD -R media for this Superdrive? Or do I have to buy Apple brand DVD -R only?
    Thanks.

You should specify your drive type if you seek a specific answer.
Given that you have a 60Gb hard drive I will asume you have the 800 Mhz G4. But no matter. The following applies at least thru the 1Ghz 17" iMac G4.
Check your disk drive type. You probably have a Pioneer 104 or 105 drive. These drives can only read/write DVD-R/RW disks. The symptoms you describe are typical of using incompatible media. If you must use DVD+R/RW disks, you should consider purchasing an external firewire drive. You can updrade your internal drive, but in my opinion not worth the expense.
Any brand DVD-R disk will work. I've used Imation, Maxell, Fuji, Sony, etc (whatever is cheapest on a 50 disk spindle) and all work equally well. But note: Some people have disk speed compatibilty issues. As an example, 8X speed disks, for whatever reason, may not work properly on your drive. You may find that 4X speed disks are a better 'fit'. Try various types for the best compatibility.

  • Recommended DVD-R media for DVD Studio Pro

I've just upgraded my Mac to a dual processor 2.3 GHx G5, and I've been having trouble burning DVD projects to DVD-R media from DVD Studio 3. The drive will either spit the disk out or it will go through the burn process, and the "burn successful" will pop on the screen in DVD Studio, but the DVD will be blank. It doesn't seem to be consistently doing this, so I think it may be the media I'm using, but I can't find a list of recommeded DVD-R brands.
My SuperDrive is a Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A:

Not totally. RW discs are great for proofing and personal use. It's always a good idea to have a player that can play ±RW discs as it saves you having to use ±R media...
But yeah, you might have wasted the money, they aren't that much these days though... there are plenty of worse ahhhhh situations in dvd authoring,

  • DVD+R media in OS 9.2.2 ??????

    hi there
i have a Pioneer DVR-110D, and toast titanium 5.2.3 in Os 9.2.2. now i can burn a DVD+R in toast with no error's and once done with the burn and varifacation it will eject as normal and toast will see the DVD+R just fine. But i quit toast and put the DVD+R to mount the disk on the desktop.
Finder will tell me that the disk is unreconized or unreadable by this computer. So i start toast again and it see's the DVD+R. so i put in a DVD-R disk and burned it with no error's and shut down toast and put the dvd-R back in and it mounted with no problem.
So is OS 9.2.2 able to read DVD+R media. if not is there a extention out there that will add the ability for Os 9.x to read DVD+R's

    Frank,
Mac OS wasn't able to read / mount DVD+R and DVD+RW format discs until OSX 10.3.
Unsure as to the answer to your second question. I'd say no, but the guys at Roxio managed to get something working for Toast, so there may be. Google is your friend.

  • Mac Mini Doesn't Recognize DVD/CD media

I've tried most of the suggestions given on the boards, including the SMU reset, but my Mac Mini still has problems with burned CD's and trying to burn DVD's. The fact you're having problems with both DVDs and CDs is not a good sign, since it is more likely to mean a faulty drive than if one or other media were problematic, but the other worked OK.
Do you get any error messages when you insert a blank DVD or burn a CD?
One thing you might want to try is to use a lens cleaner on the drive since the slot loading drives are a little more prone to dirt and debris than tray loaders. Normally if a head is dirty you'd be able to work with one media but not the other, so the fact both are troublesome either means it's not a simple matter of a dirty head or that the drive is significantly contaminated.
If the lens cleaner doesn't help, I think the symptoms suggest the drive itself has problems. In that instance, it may be a loose connector, or that it needs to be replaced. If the latter, I'd normally suggest an external drive for greater flexibility and better performance - typically at a not much different price than an internal drive, but obviously not then requriring any service time of cost.

  • Why is my iMac no longer recognizing Memorex CD-R and DVD-R media that it burned previously?

So this has happened before to me with other computers and other drives, I've had burners refuse to recognize some brands of blank discs before, but I've never really figured out the issue or had a drive start to refuse to recognize a specific brand after a few years of previously recognizing and burning them just fine. Here's the problem:
I have an older (2007) Intel iMac with the standard superdrive they shipped with. It wasn't particularly picky in the past with accepting different brands of blank CD and DVD media, though I remember that it did refuse a couple brands but I don't remember any more what they were. It did however always accept Memorex brand CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, and I literally burned several hundred DVDs and CDs on the internal superdive. All of a sudden, today I go to pop in one of the CDs and it tries to read it for about 20-30 seconds and then spits it out, no message, just rejects it. And the same thing happens with the DVDs. It's just the Memorex brand ones, older Sony and Verbatim CDs and DVDs are still reading just fine. I tried a blank Memorex CD from the same spindle that it previously burned discs from and it does the same with the blanks, blank DVDs from the same DVD spindle as well, spits them out when running Toast or Disk Utility or iTunes and trying to burn to them.
So it apparently just decided that it doesn't like these Memorex brand discs, but they worked fine for the last 5 years. This is a pretty big problem as like I said, I have hundreds of CDs and DVDs with backed up data. They aren't dirty or scratched, they are pristine. Commercial CD's and DVD's read fine, and other brands of blanks, both already burned and blank, read fine as well. It's literally just the Memorex that this same superdive burned over the years.
In the past, I had a couple extra DVD burners laying around and some external cases and had the capability to use a different drive if my internal wasn't playing nice with a brand, but I liquidated all my extra hardware a while back and don't have any other readers or writers, internal or external, that I can hook up to see what happens, unfortunately. I'm thinking that with one of the more recent OS updates, somehow support for Memorex brand discs was tossed out so the computer won't recognize them anymore. I don't know why else it would change what brands it supported like this on me. And I'm also guessing my only solution to be able to read all my hundreds of backed up discs is to buy another DVD drive and hook it up and hope it plays nice with all my discs. But that's really frustrating and I'd love it if somehow it would just recognize all the discs it used to without having to spend any money.
And I'm hoping beyond hope that this is not a unique problem I have and others have the same issue with Memorex discs and someone figured out how to get them recognized again, but I'm not holding my breath.
Any advice or musing on this issue is much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read about my problem and hopefully to offer a solution!

Thank you very much for your response, Klaus1. Yeah, when I was searching the forums for an answer to this problem before finally posting, I gathered that Memorex blank media isn't recommended and of poor quality, unfortunately, which is of course too late to help me with my current problem, but knowing that now I'll make sure I don't continue to use them in the future. I used them for many years, as long ago when DVD burners were first available I had a very hard time with Toast successfully finishing a DVD-R on an internal Panasonic 2x burner on my G3 tower, and for some reason I had good luck with them (Memorex). And then I had a lot of them on hand and they've stood up well over time (not flaking, etc.) so I kept using them over a few Mac upgrades. It also had to do with DVD players we had being compatible and able to read them.
Anyway, I'm rambling, point being I used them for lots of various reasons, but I should have kept informed in the more recent past and learned the fact that they're a poor choice and switched, my own fault. I just don't want to look totally stupid, like as if I had chosen them originally for no reason.
I went ahead and reset the NVRAM and also reset the SMC, and I had tried my cleaner disc with little brushes earlier today for the heck of it, too, but no luck still. The drive just changed it's mind and no longer likes the Memorex discs, apparently end of story and no changing it, sigh. It still really baffles me that it had no problem with them for nearly 6 years up until a few months ago, the last time I used one. So weird.
And no, I don't have the data on the discs stored anywhere else, so it's access them or nothing. I rummaged around and found an external 5.25" firewire case, and I do have a PC (yuck) I can borrow the internal dvd drive from and toss in the case and hook up to my iMac to see if it will read the discs and let me directly re-burn them to better media. I used to be very knowledgable about hardware and Macs in general, but I admit I haven't kept up my knowledge, and I don't know whether that will work - if my iMac is spitting out the discs because the drive doesn't like them and therefore a different drive might work, or if it's spitting them out because the system doesn't like them and switching drives will do nothing for me?
If not then I'll have to resort to finding another Mac I can hijack for a long time to re-burn all these discs I need, as obviously a machine with one drive is going to take a long time - putting in a disc, copying it to a local drive, ejecting it, putting in a new blank, and re-burning the data about 250 times. And a lot of baby sitting the machine as I don't have a robot to keep doing it for me. Sigh.
Thank you again for your advice, I greatly appreciate it even though I still struck out.
