DVD-RW 'RW2' disks

I recently purchased what looked like the same TDK DVD-RW disks I had been using, but my Mac was unable to write to them. I then noticed that the only distinction between the old and new ones is this "RW2" mark. TDK's website does not say anything about this RW2 feature and lists my Mac as capable of writing to their current media. I could not find much on the internet about what RW2 means, but wikipedia says that it's a newer format introduced in 2007. I wonder why neither Apple nor TDK does not say that late 2006 MacBook Pro is incompatible? The disk utility also says the Mac can write to this newer disks (but in fact can't!) Did anyone else noticed this problem with DVD-RW RW2 disks?

Formatting the disks with all zeros had no effect. It took about 20 minutes, and it burned the disk, and it still won't play in the computer/xbox/dvd player.
Maybe I should get a pack of different disks?
Thanks,
Kayle

  • How can I import the photos from dvd or hard disk?

    Hi!
How can I import/export my photos from dvd or hard disk??!

To what?    Are you having trouble with a DVD made by a particular device, or a hard disk that was on a particular computer, or is still in that computer, and communicating to your computer?  We don't have enough details to answer the question.    Are you trying to get photos into an iPhoto certain version, Photoshop certain version, just the Finder of a  certain version, or specific operating system on your Mac?    We need more details.  Is the DVD a standard DVD, such as is indicated on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446 or something non-standard?

  • Building a dvd with custom disk size (disk, ISO, or dvd folder)

My goal at the end of all this is to get a DVD format of video at 6mbps with menu's to be burned to a blu-ray 25GB disk.
    Using Encore CS6 on a Windows 7 (4.7Gzh 8-core, 16gb ram @2400mhz)
1st attempt:  I used a bluray disk and tried to burn a dvd format and it ejected my disk and said please insert a black dvd. (used custom disk of 25GB showing extra space available)
2nd attempt: I thought perhaps I would build it to an ISO (also tried dvd folder) to burn later. it responded with an error message saying, "disk capacity is too small - building navigation failed"
I dont care how I can get this to work but I would like to get all the video and menu's onto a single disk. Encore limits the "custom disk size" to 99GB so I assume it should work for 25GB (23.2GB).
The reason I dont want to make a bluray format is because it requires high bitrate and the video is so old it would be a waist of space. I dont need 720p of video from 1935. (unless I can make a bluray format at a 6mbps)
Thank you for any help you can provide
    bullfrogberry

You can do this in Encore.
I am assuming you are only picking presets, and not customizing one. You pick prests in the Transcode Settings dialog. Do you see the "Edit Quality Presets" button? Pick it, customize one by setting the bitrates to get the results you want, then SAVE IT as your own. Then pick that in the transcode setting. (In the transcode setting image, you can see my custom example "Stan Custom 4Mb CBR".) And yes, you can select all your video assets and apply this custom preset to all of them at once. I would do one short one to see if you are getting in the ball park. I would do 2 samples: one in MPEG2-Bluray and one in H.264-Blu-ray. (I'd follow Richard's recommendation to  you and use H.264.)

created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read.  I am using a dvd-r dvd and my dvd player says that it uses this type of dvd.  Any suggestions.  I spoke to an Apple Support person who helped me burn the dvd but it still didn't work...help???

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video.  I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player.  The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project.  But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options.  It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.).  You need software that will made a DVD-V disc.  Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.

  • How to duplicate a dvd-r with disk utility

I made a home movie DVD+/-R. I actually was able to duplicate this one. I now have another DVD+/-R I'd like to duplicate and don't seem to be able to use the same steps I used for the other one.
I insert disc> quit DVD player> open disk utility> choose the drive (not the DVD altho when the first one failed, I tried choosing the disc itself)> click File> choose New> choose Disk Image from "name of my dvd"> rename disc in Save As field> choose "name of my dvd" in drop down destination field> choose DVD/CD Master from Image Format field> click save. The disc starts up like it's reading it and then I get the following error message box
Unable to create "SuperDrive". (no such file or directory) -- despite the fact I renamed it the error message always default to the drive name
    or
Unable to create "DVD Video Recording". (invalid argument)
    or
Unable to create "SuperDrive". (invalid argument) -- when I choose the VIDEO_TS file in the finder space just under the drop down destination field.
I also tried the (do all steps up to choose "click File") click New Image from the tool bar route, but I end up at the same drop down scenario I got before and still no duplication.
I did it once (the disk image is still on my computer to prove it) but can not for the life of me do it again. I've searched boards on the net, used search here but was told no answer was found for my question, so here I am. I have a MacBookPro running Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Nothing has changed since I duplicated the other disc except for the usual updates so I'm at a loss at the moment.

Try the procedure in this article:

Open Terminal and type or paste:  drutil eject and press enter, quit.
Might just be a bad DVD or it could contain a different form of copy protection that the Mac doesn't understand yet. Use a older DVD's and try them out, if you still have the same problem then you can try as much as you can of the fix list here or take your machine in for service.

  • G570: CD/DVD and Hard Disk drives not recognized

I have a Lenovo G570 laptop. It used to run fine until it started taking longer and longer boot into windows. Soon the computer would not boot into windows and instead try to repair windows, which would finish but never actually repair the computer. Soon after that the CD/DVD drive dissapeard from the BIOS, and it hasn't been able to do anything with a CD except for twirl it around (but not let it read any of that beautiful data.) Soon after this the hard disk was no longer recognized. I have been able ot get the computer to boot off of a linux live flash drive, but that's only a temporary fix. I wasn't able to reach any hard disks thorugh linux to back up files, and the CD drive wasn't recognized either. How can I fix this? Thank you for reading this.

    hi argiflex,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
AFAIK, if the HDD/ODD isn't recognized under BIOS then it's a sign that the device is already failing and needs to be replaced.  You can try using a 2.5" SATA Enclosure to read the drive via the USB port on the G570 or on another PC but if the problem remains then you may need to replace the drive.
If the data on the HDD is very important, you can opt to send the HDD to a professional data recovery firm (i.e. DriveSavers) to recover the data.
    Regards

  • Unable to boot from OSX 10.6 installation DVD to run Disk Repair

    Hello all,
I have something that is puzzling me. My MacBook Pro hasn't been giving me the best experience lately - the system just seems... slow.
So I ran a disk permissions fix and it found some errors which I repaired. Then, I thought it might be wise to run a disk check on the System Disk as well.
So I attempted to boot from the Mac OSX installation DVD - I tried both a "hold the "C" key" method as well as the "Set start-up disk preferences to boot from DVD" method. I even tried two different OSX installation DVD's in case one wasn't working.
Then, I reset PRAM and I reset SMC (or at least followed the procedure as outlined by Apple - it doesn't really seem to give a strong indication of whether the process occurred or not)
I just cannot get the system to boot from DVD. (I even tried TechTools Pro 5).
I even let it "sit" for more than 4 hours in case it was just taking it's time.
Can anyone think of what the deal might be? I'm REALLY wanting to run a System Disk check now!

    Ta-Da! Worked!
You learn something new every day here! I had no idea that I couldn't boot from a standard OSX boot disk and had to use the in-box one.
It does raise the question of which version of Disk Check I will be using - as there has been several upgraded to my OS since I bought this MacBook Pro (it has 10.6.3)
THANKS! I really appreciate the help - now I can check the disk.

  • 2008 MacBook Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD or Target Disk

Yesterday I was working on my MacBook Pro. I use FontExplorer to manage fonts. I ran the conflicts diagnostic looking for missing font files, which returned about 200 results (I was expecting this). I've moved the fonts installed by Adobe/Microsoft out of my fonts folder in my user library (user library, not system). For some reason the computer started to become very slow, to the point of beachballing. The freezing seemed to start and stop. I was able to close FontExplorer and Illustrator without force-quitting. I tried to shut it down gracefully at that point but it froze up again, so I hit the power button to force a restart. It started up but now it hangs on the gray screen right before the Apple logo. The logo doesn't come up, I can hear the drive spinning as normal but it doesn't do anything.
I've tried booting from a retail copy of the Snow Leopard, but it doesn't work. I can hear the disc spin up in the DVD drive as though the computer is about to read it, but nothing happens. It just stays on that same blue screen. I've tried booting my MBP in Target Disk mode from my iMac. The target disk icon appears, however it just sits in the middle of the screen and my drive doesn't mount on the iMac. I've noticed now that the white status light on the front of the MBP (on the latch) doesn't come on, and if I cover the speakers the backlight doesn't turn off.
What do I do now? I have an enclosure I could use to try and boot the MBP's drive from, but I'm running out of options. I'm really starting to worry about my data. I have a major school project that's already late which is on there, and I don't have a recent backup. If I don't hand it in... let's not go there. I don't understand how this could happen; I take very good care of my computer, I turn it off when it's not in use, and I run Cocktail on it once a day which does a SMART status check.
    Help?

    sig,
The first thing I tried was booting from the install disk. The 2008/2009 MBP's aren't able to boot from a retail DVD of Snow Leopard, which is why I ended up using the original hardware-specific install disk that shipped with my computer. That didn't boot either. I was able to view the drive in Disk Utility when it was in the enclosure, but the partition with my data on it would not mount. I attempted a repair disk on the drive but that failed. It wouldn't mount in Terminal either. I considered trying to rebuild the volume catalog using TechTool Pro but there's the possibility that could actually make things worse. So I've taken it to the repair shop. They're running it through DiskWarrior overnight, last I heard there were 60-something thread errors. Yesterday my SMART status was fine, today my drive is dead. What happened? Hoping for the best (but expecting the worst).

  • Trouble copying DVD-R using Disk Utility

Hi there. I am trying to copy a DVD-R that I created with my standalone Sony DVD recorder using the Disk Utility program. I am following the instructions I found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
Unfortunately, every time I attempt this, I get an 'Invalid Argument' error message while it is trying to create the duplicate image. Can anyone tell me how I can get this to work? Thanks in advance-
    Adam

I have burned DVDs before, and I am also experiencing this problem in trying to copy a non-copyrighted DVD to my hard drive.
I select the DVD in Disk Utility, click 'New Image,' choose an innocent name with only letters, select "CD/DVD Master" and "No encryption," and then wait. A window with a progress bar opens and says something like, "Reading Apple_ISO" for a few minutes while the blue bar is getting filled. After the progress bar is completed, Disk Utility displays a pop-up window with the message "Invalid argument." No image was created.
Is there any way around this? For example, is there a manual way or some other way of creating a disk image that is a copy of a DVD?
Again, the DVD is non-copyrighted. In fact, the makers explicitly encourage or authorize copying.
    Thanks for any help,
    Chris

  • Dvd drive ejects disks repeatedly before seating the disk

When I try to insert any type of disk into the Blue-ray/DVD combo slot drive, it repeatedly ejects the disk. Sometimes it takes me 10 or 15 tries to get the drive to accept the disk. It doesn't matter whether it is a blank disk, DVD, CD or Blue-ray disk. Eventually it seats the disk into the drive and the drive works properly after that,  but it really is a pain that it takes me that many times.
    Is this a defective drive???

Yes it needs to be replaced or (long shot) have the laser cleaned with a cleaning disk.

  • Script for automatically copying DVDs/CDs to disk on insert?

I just started to copy about 500 Data-DVDs (and some CDs) to an external FAT32 USB-disk. I do that by dragging the mounted disk from the desktop to the drive while holding down the option-key.
Is there a way to automate that? Would be easier if the Mac started the copying whenever a new DVD/CD is mounted on the desktop. And ejecting the disk by itself would be nice too. That way I'd be sure to notice that another copy is done and could put in the next disk ...

Apple-Script doesn't want me to use the path: "/Volumes/FILME/" ...
You'll want to leave the superdrive path the same but change the duplicate to desktop part to your own external hd. I'm pretty sure you get it just making sure.
Applescript doesn't mind the path you chose just the UNIX style slash format oppose to mac colon delimintated. Try this
    (/Volumes/FILME/...) as POSIX path
