DVD-RW Storage Media

My cdrom manugacturer recommended JVC DVD-RW 4X for re-writable media. I've tried several on line stores, and they say the product is no longer available, and point me to Taiyo Yuden, which I have never heard of. One dealer remarked that JVC was no longer manufacturing re-writable media.
Having lost valuable files to "unpronounceable" media in the past, I am curious to know if someone can shed some light on this development. Like you, my work demands reliable storage.

If you're really into backing up your photos on a lasting medium, it's best to use gold CDs, which are not rewriteable. Because such a disk's surface is coated with a thin layer of gold, instead of aluminum, and because gold is virtually immune to anything in breathable air that could corrode it, real backup freaks use gold CDs. The downside, of course, is that CDs don't hold nearly as much information as DVDs, so you wind up having to store rooms full of CDs somewhere in a relatively safe locale. And, at about 4 bucks a pop, they ain't all that cheap. Unfortunately, for a technical reason that's virtually impossible for idiots like me to understand, manufacturers can't make gold coated DVDs; so, we're stuck with CDs.
As for brands of DVDs, in my experience, any of the name brands, such as TDK, Memorex, etc. work fine. I've been backing up my photos since 2002 on normal non-rewriteable DVDs and CDs and, so far (knock on wood), I can still access the photos on them. However, I also back up my shots on a 1 TB external hard drive, which, so far (knock on wood) has not exhibited any problems. Hard drives do crash, so it pays to have an alternate backup.
Interesting note: the Library of Congress in its never ending quest to archive everything it collects as permanently as possible, uses lacquer disks and needles to record and preserve all its audio works. They don't trust CDs, DVDs, or, god forbid, magnetic tape.

  • Using DVD+R DL media

I'm starting a new movie project & was wondering about using DVD+R DL media. Will the DVD's play in most commercial players? I did a quick search of the Forums & didn't come up with much info about it.

At present, there is no Mac on that market that can burn all CD and
DVD media. Therefore when purchasing media, it's extremely important to know what your computer is able to do because if your computer can burn DVD R, it's not going to be able to use media for DVD+R. However, some of the third-party manufactured external drives do have the capability to burn multi-formats.
The difference between DVD+R and DVD-R or is DVD+R better than DVD-R?
    1) DVD-R disks seem to be cheaper now
    2) DVD-R disks seem to be more compatible with read-only drives
    3) Current writers can write DVD-R/-RW at 2.4X while DVDR/RW at 4X
    4) If you make disks for yourself, it does not make any difference which format you use
    5) If you make disks for someone else, then you make disks that they can read
The Difference Between The Various DVD Recordable Formats
Currently there are many writable and rewritable formats on the market and it can be confusing to the general consumer. These formats include:
    DVD-RAM
    DVD-R
    DVD-RW
    DVD+R
    DVD+RW
There is also "General Purpose" vs "Authoring" discs don't confuse the "Authoring" media with the term for content development (making/editing what eventually goes on the DVD). The most common type of DVDR is the general purpose type. If you do not know that you have an actual authoring recorder drive, then you most likely have the general purpose type. Take a look at this from pioneer for more information on the differences in these types of media:
    DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM is a format primarily used as a data solution, although the type of data stored can include many types of data including video.
Early version 1 recorders used 2.6 GB discs (or double-sided 5.2 GB discs), but current version 2 drives can handle 4.7 GB discs (or double-sided 9.4 GB discs). These discs are traditionally housed within a cartridge which cannot be opened, so that the media is well-protected.
Newer Type 2 cartridges can be opened however, which is important for some people who wish to read these discs in drives or standalone DVD-Video players/recorders which do not use the DVD-RAM cartridge loading mechanism. DVD-RAM is a sanctioned format of the DVD Forum, a consortium of companies involved in the development of DVD standards.
DVD-RAM is a very robust data storage solution, theoretically allowing greater than 100000 rewrites per disc. In addition, similar to a hard drive, it allows full random read/write access and has defect management.
An additional benefit of DVD-RAM is that, having been around for
several years, it is a tried and true technology which has native support in Windows XP and Mac OS X. The discs are usually formatted with the UDF format, but can be formatted to such formats as FAT32 in Windows and HFS+ for Mac, or others. The main drawback of DVD-RAM is its very limited read compatibility in DVD-ROM drives and standalone DVD-Video players. DVD-RAM read support in these machines is increasing however.
DVD-R and DVD-RW are both also supported formats of the DVD Forum. Both formats generally use 4.7 GB discs (generally without
cartridges), although some DVD-R drives used 3.95 GB discs. DVD-R is a write-once recordable format which allows excellent compatibility with both standalone DVD-video players and DVD-ROM drives.
There are two main types of 4.7 GB DVD-R discs: DVD-R for General Use and DVD-R for Authoring. Most consumer drives use the former cheaper General Use discs, while many higher end professional drives use Authoring discs.
The correct media type appropriate for the drive must be used when burning. However, once burned, the discs should be able to be read in either drive type. (General Use DVD-Rs are designed to prevent backup of encrypted commercial DVDs). DVD-RW uses rewritable discs which are rated at more than 1000 rewrites in ideal situations. Unfortunately, DVD-RW does not enjoy the same excellent compatibility with DVD-ROM drives and standalone DVD-Video p

  • Konqueror not showing storage media content

    Hello,
I have this problem with the new kde 3.4.2 and the 3.4.1-? that was out before it.  It was working before that.
The problem is that files/directories are not shown for CDs in the Storage media section of konqueror and once mounted, the device stays busy until konqueror is closed.
In more detail:  If I open konqueror in file management mode and go to the services tab -> Storage media, I can see the cd-rom disk.  If I click on the icon, it mounts the drive (verified by doing an ls of /media/cdrom before and after) but no files are shown in the konqueror window.   I can go to the root folder tab and navigate to /media/cdrom and the files are there and can be copied to disk, etc.
In konqueror (back in services->Storage media) right clicking the icon to eject fails with an error box.  If I try to unmount the drive on the command line, I get a 'device is busy' error until I exit konqueror, then it works.
I tried running konqueror from the command line, but it does not show any relevant messages.
I use udev, dbus, hal.  No special udev rules or symlinks, just the arch default.
    ls -l /dev/hdc
    brw-rw---- 1 root optical 22, 0 2005-07-22 04:31 /dev/hdc
...and my user is in the optical group (obvious since I am able to mount/unmount by hand).
    Any ideas?

I didn't have the storage problem (anymore...), but kdebase 3.4.2-3 solved other problems for me (being unable to enter some directories from Konqueror, and dog slow audioCD rips via the VFS).
    Well done, nonexistent packager!
The only quirk ATM is that kscd does not "see" any audio engine anymore (BTW this also applied for the previous kdebase version), it does read the audioCD and starts playing back, but remains silent...
Since kaffeine, or Amarok works (the latter only with the Arts engine- gstreamer and xine seem unable to use the KDE VFS) this isn't much of a problem, just wondering why kscd can't spot artsd...

  • Satellite A105-S2101 - Can't watch DVDs with Express Media Player

I got this Satellite A105-S2101 notebook computer, and the LCD blew out on me within 2 years.
Luckily, I can still make use of the VGA, and S-Video outputs, but it may as well be a desktop PC now. Anyway, I just wanted to add that because of this problem, I no longer am able to watch DVDs with Express Media Player because it wont accept VGA or S-Video as defaults just my busted-up, good-for-nothing, always blurry anyway LCD.
It's only when I am in Windows mode that I can toggle to an external monitor.
The reason I write is, if there ever was a need to add anything for an update to EMP--now's the time and that would be something to add to it. What the heck?

    Hi
I think the Express Media Player does not run in Windows mode
I mean it's not neccessary to run the Windows OSin order to run Express Media Player and therefore the video output does not work in connection with EMP.
I think you will have to use an Windows based software player VLC player is very nice. I use it too its small, free tool and you can play almost all files audio and video.

  • Built in Storage media ERROR

    Blackberry Torch 9800 v6.0.0.246, platform 6.4.0.105
    Hello,
I receive a Blackberry Torch for Christmas.  It was working great until I connected it to the computer for first time and did the updates and backup suggested.  I now get the message "Built in storage media is not accessible due to fatal errors".
I also lost all the ringtones.  Being a non-techie I did not connect the two.  The next time I connected to the computer to backup etc and to download ringtones because mine were gone, all the wallpaper that comes with the device was gone.  I have connected again to back up my blackberry and
tried to restore to see if that helps, it does not.
I did try to reformat my Built in storage media but it did not get rid of the error message and now I do
not even see built in storage media coming up when I am in device options.
Can anyone help me?  Should I be returning this device or can the problem be fixed?
    Thanks

Still haven't found a solution online.  Phoned BlackBerry head office today and had them transfer me to a tech who provided 3 options:
    1) go to this website and search http://ca.blackberry.com/support/
    2) Contact Telus, since they have people trained by BlackBerry - if they cannot solve it, ask the rep to call BlackBerry - they can do this via conference call
    3) Pay BlackBerry tech, cost $50/hr
    also came across this posting:
    http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/viewdocument.do?noCount=true&externalId=KB26025&sliceId=2&cm...
part of the resolution is "Locate the affected file and remove it from the BlackBerry smartphone. If the error continues, then complete the following steps to format the internal memory on the BlackBerry smartphone."
How do I locate the affected file?

  • Recommended DVD+R DL Media for MacBook

    Hello all,
I've tried Memorex and TDK DVD+R DL media to burn a large iDVD project, and it tends to fail. Once it kind of worked when I lowered the burn speed to 2x (resulted in a 2.4x burn speed).
I would like to try Sony media or Verbatim....but it so expensive to just "try it out" I wanted some input. My MacBook is the new Santa Rosa, with the drive that is not that Matshuita...it is the other one.
    Thanks

Every time I wind up with a new device I check out Meritline. They generally have a sampler packet of optical discs for sale. (Once I called because I didn't see it online and the salesperson put one together for me.) Anyway, its 2 discs of several different media to test out. Give that a try. BTW, I'm using Verbatim for the 'good stuff' and cheap Ritek DL media for everything else.

  • Sound Blaster Audigy 2: No sound in DVD or Windows Media Pla

Getting around in Windows XP I get all the sounds in the book, whether it's starting up or shutting down, critical "bongs", icon confirmation "clicking", all the sounds are there. Where I do not get sound is While attempting to watch a DVD or when I try to play any music file in Windows Media Player. The DVD video will play, there's just no sound, and with Media Player I get this error message:? "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device."? Again, all the other Windows sounds are there. Anybody have any experience with this one?

I have just installed my Sound Blaster card, and get all of the Windows sounds. I can even play music CDs and movie DVDs on different media players other than Windows Media Player. The sound is also fine when playing games. However, when I try to use Windows Media Player, the CD and DVD plays, but there is no sound. In fact, when Windows Media Player is up and running, there is no Windows sounds or even other sounds when playing games. As soon as I close Windows Media Player, there is sound. I analyzed the configuration settings for both the Sound Blaster card and Windows Media Player, but I cannot see any problems.
    Does anyone have a clue?

  • Can't retrieve iMovie project saved to DVD for storage and editing.

When I save my iMovie project to DVD for storage and possible future editing, I cannot retrieve it from the DVD. I get the message, "The project could not be opened, bacuase the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permissions are incorrect..." How do I remedy that?

    the folder is locked
iMovie projects won't work with locked volumes (such as a DVD!). So you must first copy the project to the HD.

  • By using "Disk Utility", will I burn a DVD to watch on TV or burn a DVD for storage?

Old Toad tells me to burn a DVD from"Disk Utility", but will that burn my DVD so I can watch it on TV, or will it store those files on a DVD?
If best, I would like to actually watch the DVD...

Disk Utility will create a data DVD for storage.
Ony iDVD will burn a video for playback with a DVD player or your Mac.
The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.

    with just 1.5 as well...
    Oh - I see . . .
So Apple are just kidding when they say 2 GB minimum?
    (I don't think so)
It may not be the actual cause of your problem but it certainly isn't enough RAM - and RAM problems can cause many faults.
Are you running two external HDs at once?
I think your System is under powered for what you are trying to do.
You don't have enough free space and you're just asking too much of it.
Remove all Firewire and external devices, and try running something easy, like word for an hour or so. If all goes well, try a different App (but just one App at a time) gradually building up to FCP last.
If all seems to be OK, reconnect some hardware one at a time. If you hit trouble, you know what to suspect - so re-start the test, but this time, using the suspect App or Hardware first. If the problem re-occurs you should be able to prove what's causing it.

  • What DVD (read write) media is the most reliable.

On a new Mac Pro, should I use DVD+RW or DVD-RW, and what brand.

Check out http://www.macsales.com optical drives and media section.
I have not had any issue with Verbatim +RW.
If you type "DVD " into the Search field above next to "Support" will take you to Apple Store where 20 pack Verbatim $19.95.
I know there use to be a site that delved into all things related to DVD media.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/media-and-accessories/
There are 2 major DVD formats, and 6 within those. DVD+ and DVD-. The DVD+ standard has advantages when it comes to video recording on TV DVD recorders. They can start recording faster, so it's much easier to put the disc in and hit record to write your favorite show to disc immediately. For PC data, there is very little difference between DVD+ and DVD-. DVD+ will most likely win the format 'war'.
DVD- is the DVD-forum approved standard, and it uses the regular DVD logo with Recordable and Rewritable. It's basically the same technology as CD-R and CD-RW.
Those are the two main formats, but there are several discs within those:
    DVD+R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 16X speed.
DVD-R - Write-once media conforming to the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 8X speed.
DVD+RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD+ standard. 4.7Gb, up to 4X speed.
DVD-RW - Rewriteable media from the DVD- standard. 4.7Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
    DVD+R DL - Dual-layer write-once media from the DVD+ standdard. 8.5Gb, up to 2.4X speed.
DVD-RAM - ReWriteable media from a subset of the DVD- standard. NOT common, and very expensive, but EXCELLENT for use as a large floppy disk drive. Only a few consumer drives write to DVD-RAM discs, mainly those made by LG.
If you want to record movies, you should be aware that DVD+R media is less compatible with TV DVD-players (especially older ones). Also, some PC DVD-ROM drives won't read DVD+R discs.

  • DVD archival storage

Is there a best brand/type of DVD for archival storage of digital video? Secondly, I'm using a Sony DVD recorder to transfer old Hi8 analog tapes to DVD (since it cannot be done with iMovie). What DVD format should I use to then play and edit on my iMac20?

DVD's and archival storage is really much like an oxymoron. They are not reliable for this purpose. Tape is the very best archival medium, but since you don't have that option, I would suggest you look for Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media.
The common DVD format is MPEG2, for which you will need MPEGStreamclip (freeware) and Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 plug-in ($20.00) to work it in iMovie.
You could make all your requirements (archive, play and edit) much simpler if you bought yourself a miniDV cam and shelve the DVD cam.
