DVD-RW thinkpad t23

I bought a DVD RW drive for my thinkpad t23 and the computer does not recognize it. It works and everything, but it does not appear in windows explorer even after rebooting. I tried putting that ISO file on a cd and running it at startup, but it does not seem to have any effect. What would I have to do to get this to work?
\Thanks!

Several things could be at work here...
Has any previous Ultrabay optical drive worked before, and if so, does it still work correctly?
Who is the manufacturer of the DVDRW drive and what is the model number?
Was it bought new or used? In either case, is there any DOA guarantee provided by the seller?
Would it be possible that you can install the DVDRW drive into another Ultrabay 2000 system?

  • Thinkpad t23 series lights and button symbols diagram.

thinkpad t23 series lights and button symbols diagram.
I would like to get a diagram that lists the lights and the Thinkpad button along with its symbols. Like an arrow pointing to a light and telling me the X is functioning or not, along with the rest of speaker? symbols. Fn combos and their definitions would be good too.
I do not have the owner/user manual for the T23 2647TU but I imagine it would be printed in some form there?
Could anyone help me with this by directing to a web site or screen shot to the users manual that shows this information? I would appreciate it.
    Thank You,
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
so here are some screen shots for you and others who may read in the future. This is a nice discovery for me also. Very useful, complete User's Guide for T23, XP version, which  I actually installed on my W500 running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. The possibilities are endless, not just for T23, but for other older models which possibly have a User's Manual archived online. It means I could simply cut and paste so many steps of information which for myself are so obvious and elementary,  but will be invaluable to one of my young students learning basic computing skills. And the fact the User's Guide runs on my W500 means only the student needs to have a T23 (or whatever other machine in their hands), I don't need to have another T23 set up to access the manual.
Here are a few step-by-step guidelines which may can help you and others reading in the future. Don't mind me putting so many details. As a teacher I like to explain things in such a way that even if one my 3rd grade students were to read this post they could follow the steps. Some people have never really used a laptop at all before and will be glad for simple, detailed steps:
How to install T23 Access User's Guide on a Windows 7 machine (should be nearly identical procedure for XP or Vista):
    (1) As mentioned before just go to the Drivers and software - ThinkPad T23 download page:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT072383. There, under the "Software and utility" category you will find: Access online User's Guide for Windows - ThinkPad T23: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001263. Download the file and transfer it to your T23 using a USB flash drive.  (In my case I downloaded it directly onto my W500)
    (2) Double-click to run the downloaded file. It will extract setup files to C:\DRIVERS\ATP_PKG by default.
    (3) Click the START button ---> Computer----> Drivers ---> and double click to open the "ATP_PKG" folder. Double-click to run the "SETUP" application file.
    (4) After installation, you can navigate to Start Menu ---> All programs ----> Thinkpad ---> Thinkpad information, and RIGHT-CLICK "Access Thinkpad". You can then  choose to "Pin to taskbar" and/or "Send to desktop (create shortcut)" which will create an ACCESS THINKPAD logo right on your desktop with the cool old IBM logo which you can see in one of the pictures.
I have included a few snapshots showing my W500 with T23 User's Guide installed: Main welcome screen with cute T23 animation (hence the  blur);  Main menu- notice even a link to reach IBM for warranty information (if anyone still has a warranty on their T23, joking of course); And "everyday use" menu which includes status light indicators and FN-key assignments you asked about. So you see how useful these old "User manuals" can be, because if anyone comes on the Forum we can just cut and paste information from the User's Manual. Some people (especially young people ) need that level of clarity and simplicity. And it's just a small file, 21.8 MB downloaded onto my W500.
Below I <CUT> and <PASTED> a section from the User's Guide. Here are the Function keys you asked about (the pictures which didn't come out in cutting and pasting got replaced below by " "  and are just little asterisk symbols and a small diagram showing where FN key and Home/End keys are). Of course this can be remedied by taking screen shots instead:
     Function keys
The Fn key function enables you to change operational features instantly. To use this function, press and hold the Fn key (1); then press a function key (2)--F1 to F12, PgUp, Home, or End.
The following shows the functions of the Fn key with other keys:
    Power conservation or battery power
Fn + F3: Turn off the computer display, leaving the screen blank. To turn the computer display on again, press any key or press the TrackPoint(R) pointer. Also the computer display is turned on if the ac adapter is attached to or detached from the computer.
Fn + F4: Put your computer in standby mode. To return to normal operation, press the Fn key independently, without pressing a function key.
    Notes:
This mode is called suspend mode in Windows(R) 95 and Windows NT(R).
In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, this combination of buttons functions as a sleep button. You can change the settings so that pressing it puts the computer into hibernation mode or even shut the computer down.
Fn + F12: Put your computer into hibernation mode. To return to normal operation, press the power button for less than four seconds.
Note: To use Fn+F12 for hibernation in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you must have IBM PM device driver installed on your computer.
For information on the power management function, refer to Extending battery life.
    Other functions
Fn + F7: Display output on the computer display, an attached external monitor, or both. Pressing this combination causes the display to go from the computer display to the external monitor, then to both together, and then to the computer display again:
    External monitor (CRT display)
Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
    Computer display (LCD)
Note: This function is not supported when different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor, or in certain cases in which the same desktop images are displayed on both screens, but the refresh rates of the screens are controlled separately by the system.
Fn + F8: Switch the computer screen size between expanded and normal mode if your computer display image is smaller than the physical display.
Note: This function is not supported in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Fn + PgUp: Turn the ThinkLight on or off.
Note: The status of the ThinkLight, on or off, is shown on the screen for a few seconds when you press Fn + PgUp.
Fn + Home: The computer display becomes brighter.
Fn + End: The computer display becomes less bright.
Note for the Fn key lock function
The following setup gives you the same effect as when you press and hold the Fn key and then press a function key.
Start the ThinkPad(R) Configuration Program. Click the Accessibility button, and click Enable for Fn key lock. You can also set up by typing PS2 FNS E at the command prompt.
When the Fn key is not enabled, you need to hold it down while pressing a function key. When it is enabled, you can use the function keys more easily:
Press the Fn key once. The next time you press it, you can release it and then press a function key, to get the same effect as if you had held the Fn key down while pressing the function key.
Press the Fn key twice. Then, for the rest of your session, you can press any function key without pressing the Fn key again.
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • Trackpoint and ps2 mouse on thinkpad t23

I have an old Thinkpad t23 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T23. Everything works just fine but when i insert a ps2 mouse in the port dmesg doesn't show it and the mouse acts the same as the trackpoint, instead of scrolling by wheel it uses wheel emulation. When i plug in an usb mouse dmesg recognises it. and scrolling works as it should. Could be that the ps2 and trackpoint are hardwired or am i doing something wrong ?

    Hi, mkmchugh
If there is such an option available, it would be with the mouse settings. Do you see anything related to disabling them with a USB mouse connected when you go to Mouse under Control panel and go to I believe is the Thinkpad tab?

  • [SOLVED]No sound after resuming from suspend thinkpad t23

On a T23 Thinkpad, suspend-to-ram works, but I have no sound and no network when resuming.
After googling for a while, it seems I must unload sound modules before going to sleep and then reload my sound modules after resuming.
    lsmod|grep snd gives me this:
    snd_intel8x0 28700 3
    snd_ac97_codec 94756 1 snd_intel8x0
    snd_pcm_oss 38432 0

    snd_timer 19332 1 snd_pcm
    snd_page_alloc 8072 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
    snd_mixer_oss 14464 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd 44388 12 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
    soundcore 6496 1 snd
    ac97_bus 2432 1 snd_ac97_codec
However, from the command line, after
    modprobe -r snd_seq_oss snd_seq snd_seq_device snd_intel8x0 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm snd_timer snd_mixer_oss
    I get:
FATAL: Module snd_intel8x0 is in use.
Even though I have no sound apps running.
I am planning on putting the modprobe -r command in /etc/pm/sleep.d/whatever to unload and then another to reload the mods.
    Any help appreciated.

OK, solved it. Placed this in /etc/pm/sleep.d/11suspend
    #!/bin/sh
    mixers="Master PCM CD"
for mixer in $mixers ; do
    /usr/bin/amixer -q sset $mixer mute
    /usr/bin/amixer -q sset $mixer unmute
    done
Just mutes and unmutes master, PCM and cd channels. Works perfectly. suspend-to-ram and hibernate now work 100%.

  • Thinkpad t23 models

I just joined this forum. My apologies if I have posted in the wrong place. I have a t23 2647-4MU. I am trying to learn what the model numbers mean. I have looked in the Hardware Maintenance Manual around page 151, but still have questions. I'm hoping you folks can help me.
    1. What is the difference between the 2647 and 2648?
    2. What do the 3 characters after the "-" mean?
    3. My 2647-4MU has a defective charging circuit (won't charge battery) and seems to be overheating the laptop if used on AC power for more than an hour. Changing the mother board, I'm told is cost prohibitive on an old computer like this. One option would be to buy a "compatible" model and just move the HDD over. This would work unless there is a difference in chipsets.
Can you advise on what t23 models would be suitable?

    Welcome to the forum!
The difference between 2647 and 2648 machines was warranty entitlement when they were new.
Hah...the last three characters are the essence of the machine's ID, be it T23 or T400...there's no way to realistically split the hairs and say "A means this" or "9 equals this". Majority of the US/Canadian models have "U" as the last character, where it would be "G" for an identical machine sold in Europe, but even that's not a 100% guaranteed trick...
Any T23 board will do the trick, and they're not that expensive nowadays.
Any T23 will accept your hard drive with no questions asked.
And if you want to be on the really safe side, I just happen to have a spare 2647-4MU...PM for details if interested.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slot-in DVD for Thinkpad T61

(First of all sorry for my english. Hope you understand me)
I'm looking for a slot-in DVD drive for my Thinkpad T61.
I live in Hungary and I've found only two affordable options. Get a Samsung slim slot-in drive or a MacBook's SuperDrive (maybe Panasonic or LG). I still have my guarantee so if I buy one of them; can the service "fit in" to my Thinkpad? I mean, I have to buy a special "only for Thinkpad" DVD drive or one of these also good?

Well there are over 500 different slim-line and super-slimline DVD drives on the market, some of them with special firmware versions and some of those drives are build as slot-in drive versions. Even most of the sizes (12,7x129x128 mm) and connectors (JAE 50 pin) are to 98% equal, there still some differences and things to take into account.
The overall problem with a slot-in DVD drive will be to find a suitable front-panel for a Thinkpad T61:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=22775
As you can see, beside maybe some possible firmware version conflicts, the main common problem for you with a Thinkpad T61 will be, to find a suitable front-panel for a third-party slot-in slim-line drive here! - BTW, I have a Samsung slim-line slot-in drive, which I use as a secondary external USB/Firewire drive when I travel. The front-panel which is supplied with the Samsung slot-in drive will not adhoc fit for a Thinkpad T61!

  • Unable to restore from DVD set - ThinkPad keeps rebooting to Rescue and Recovery screen

    Hello:

    (image link removed)
I have used Lenovo Rescue / Recovery to make a full disk image backup to DVDs for installation of SSD drive.
Attempting to boot from Rescue / Recovery DVD appears to load Windows files, start Windows then goes to this Lenovo R&R screen:

No menus show up asking to restore anything, in about 5 seconds it shuts down and reboots again over and over.
I did have BIOS 2.01 and upgraded it using Lenovo BIOS boot DVD upgrader, now is 2.05 and same result.
Factory reset would be OK, but tI paid extra for Windows 7 pro "downgrade" (ironic, no?) that I would like to keep.  System restore disks that came with theunit are for Windows 8.1 .

FYI that error is known as a "kernel panic", typically software related but potentially hardware related.
I recommend starting with a clean install (erase the hardware, and reinstall Mac OS X). Do not transfer/migrate any data yet. After you have created a new user account, test the computer to ensure the hardware seems responsive. If computer performance is positive, use Migration Assistant to began migrating your backups to your computer.

  • DVD Player crashes after drive change

    Hi everyone,
For the last 6 months or so, I've had my ThinkPad T23's Combo drive installed in my Pismo. It's a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-RW that came with the ThinkPad originally, but has recently failed. I took the drive out and reinstalled the Pismo's original DVD-ROM drive, but the result has been that DVD Player now fails to load up when I put in a DVD Movie. Specifically, the player tries to load up, but stops, crashes and closes. I had to use PatchBurn to install the 720, but all related files have now been removed. Incidentally, I had the same trouble with the Combo when I first installed it, remedied by using PatchBurn 4. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
I have no specific fix but here are a few suggestions:
    - If you have an external monitor connected, remove it and test DVD Player.
    - Are you sure the DVD-side of the OEM DVD-ROM drive is sound? These drives are known to fail in various ways. Check its health by booting your Tiger DVD.
    - Make sure you have performed routine maintenance by flushing all the caches; the caches have occasionally caused problems on the Pismo with proper operation of the optical drive.
    - If no success at this point, it is recommended you download to your desktop the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC). Installing the Combo on top of your existing 10.4.8 will often solve various software issues; this Combo also includes the DVD Player.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
I install system updates in a very conservative manner: Run Repair Disk Permissions if you have not done so recently plus Verify Disk; if 'Verify' in First Aid fails, boot to your Tiger DVD and make repairs. A Safe Boot will also make most directory repairs but not all.
Once the HD is healthy, I restart with a Safe Boot/Safe Mode and run the Combo installer. Restart normally and test DVD Player.

You can install any flavour of 2.5" P-ATA drive you wish to, 4200, 5400 or 7200 RPM, height restriction 12.5mm. As far as capacity is concerned, I'm not sure on this point, so I would recommend staying under 120GB to play on the safe side. Other members who know better will hopefully post to say you can go for larger capacity if you wish to.

  • T23 Ethernet Port

    Greetings,
Thinkpad T23, 2647-2KU.  Some time ago the Ethernet port stopped working.  All the lights were correct, just could not ping to the outside.  Replaced the daughter board but still can't get out.  I do have wireless but would like a LAN connection at times.  Suggestions other than a new MB?
    Rob

OK, at least we know that the system is "seeing" the card...which still doesn't mean that the port is working.
I'd try downloading and burning a copy of a "live" Linux CD, and testing the port there. Make sure that the LAN cable is plugged when booting the "live" CD.
This is the distro that I used on the last T23 that I owned:

  • T23 replacement hard drive wont boot

I recently had my original 30GB ATA/100 hard drive for my Thinkpad t23 fail. I purchased a new 120GB ATA/100 drive that was supposed to work specifically with the T23. Once installed, I can see it in the BIOS, I can partition using FDISK, Windows XP DOS portion of setup completes up to first reboot, and I can see the drive and/or copy files. However, regardless of using XP or DOS with an active and bootable system installed the system simply will not boot from the hard drive. I get a flashing dash in the top left hand corner of the screen. I have of course applied the latest system and controller ROM.
    Any ideas???

    gxlord, welcome to the forum,
did you attach the metal tray, caddy, which was attached to your original drive to the new drive? Sounds stupid, but it's important.
    Hope this helps
