DVD's & CD's with working content indices

In OS 10.3, read-only optical volumes bearing fully functional content indices could be created using disk image files. These were extremely useful for many purposes, and circumvented the frequent tendency of the indexing software to erase entire content indices if one sneezed or the moon was in the wrong phase. I'm new to 10.4, and have attempted, without success, to create optical volumes with working content indices. The V100 folder and enclosed files used by Spotlight are successfully transferred when burning a DVD from a .dmg file, but are apparently ignored. I've tried this using .dmg's with permissions both enabled and turned off, but no deal. Is there any way to coax spotlight into using a content index borne on a DVD or CD?

Mark, Welcome to the Discussions, have a look here and see if after trying what I suggest works.. Use a Commercial DVD Movie for your test.

  • Burning a DVD with interactive content

I know parts of my question have been answered in previous posts, but there are parts I can't find the answer to. So here goes...
I'm creating a traditional DVD. I want to add content that is accessible from a PC/Mac. The interface will be HTML so there's no problem with that on either platform.
I'm not sure how to do this in DVD SP. I understand I can add this content in my resource folder within the project, but DVD SP doesn't know what to do with it, does it? What steps do I take to get DVD SP to burn a DVD that will play the video content in any set top DVD player, and launch the auto-run for the HTML content when placed in a PC or Mac?
    Thanks in advance!

if the DVD disc with autorun files is inserted in a hardware player, or a computer it will stall, it will not play.
This is the reason procedures from DVD@Access and Intellidisc were concieved.
DVD@Access on the PC has been found to be very unreliable, but when playing back on a Mac works out well.
Intellidisc is very reliable for PC playback, and used with DVD@Acess for the Mac is a sturdy combination to cover both platforms.

  • How do I import an old home movie on DVD into iMovie with video_ts content and .vob files

Hi, as a new mac user I would appreciate any help to use imovie to import an old home movie on DVD with movie_ts content and .vob

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion and Mavericks even though they have it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • DVD optical drive no longer works with Windows under bootcamp or parallels

For some strange reason, the DVD optical drive- Optiarc 5680 on my 27" iMac, no longer works anymore with Windows under Parallels or Bootcamp. It used to work perfectly fine before, but now it just shows up with a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager and Code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver..."
The DVD drive continues to still work fine with OSX. But it won't work anymore under Windows via Parallels or bootcamp, despite trying to uninstall the optical device drivers, update, reinstall, etc. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas?

Finally found the solution for anybody else who runs into this problem. It was solved by doing a registry mod in Windows from this site:
    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
described in “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)”
After applying the registry changes the DVD optical drive worked instantly again with Windows....sigh...guess I can't blame the Mac on this one.

Try a hard reset:- hold the home button AND the power switch - ignore the red "Slide to power off" and wait ubntil the iPhone powers down, and then restarts - at the Apple logo, release all the buttons and see if your contacts reappear.

  • My Optiarc DVD RW AD-7581S wont work on Pavillion laptop with windows 8. What do I need to do.

I Installed windows 8 and DVD stopped working as a player. Am now completely goofed as I tried a backup recovery disc to get back to before win 8 and all that did was wipe my drive and leave windows 8 bare!
Any ideas on how to get the DVD drivers to work on win 8 when they worked fine on win 7.
If I buy a new DVD writer etc will that work or is it going to be a mother board related problem.
Windows 8 told me that the machine was compatable but it lied and Im in mess now.

    Hi:
There probably isn't a problem with your DVD or W8.
W8 unlike W7, does not come with the codecs required to play DVD's.
You can download DVD playing software (I use the k-lite codec pack), or you will need to install other DVD playing software for your PC.
If your notebook has dvd playing software for W7, it should also work on W8.
If not, you can try this software I found from an HP dv6 notebook for W8.

  • How to Make a 1 DVD with the content of 2 DVD's?

I have a project that rquires to re-edit the content of 1 DVD to spanish, and also add the original English DVD material into this new DVD, how do I create 1 DVD from my normal Encore project and and the other files from the English Version Disc, which by the way has links, PDF's, and Ineractual Player Auto Start stuff. I'm using Encore CS3, but I just downloaded CS4 on a PC XP. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply. I'll respond to your questions...
I have a DVD (movie not ROM) with a 30 minute safety video in English. The DVD has an incredible amount of links that go from one menu to another to another, it's the most confusing and elaborate menu/chapter I've ever seen, well my customer wants me to translate it into Spanish, but now he told me he wants the English AND Spanish version to be in one disc. That's the problem. I can capture the movie. I can translate the script and do the Spanish voice over (just like in the old karate movies) I can create the new menu pages in Spanish and I can create the intricate links, so what do I do with the English version? I can't create the whole English version again, more like I don't want to is there another easier option?
Once I create the new Spanish project using Encore CS4 I don't know how to prompt Encore to attach the English DVD content with all the functionality of menus, chapters and links. I can attach movies, assets, etc. Can I attach anything else? This is what the DVD has inside:
    16 objects: 1.45 GB
    Video_TS folder
    Audio_TS Folder
    Average_files folder
    Common folder
    Good_files folder
    Poor_files folder
    Win folder
    Autorun File
    Average HTML document file
    Disc.id ID file
    Good HTML document file
    IG87 Word Document file
    Install InterActual file
    Poor HTML document file
    Poster PDF file
    Readme TXT file
    > Interactual Player is a file that the past DVD creator used to help the viewer go from Laptop video to web pages, etc. really annoying since you have to download to your hard drive as soon as the DVD starts.

  • How can I work with LoaderInfo.content while loading?

I'm trying to implement the display of a loading swf into a
papervision scene, as outlined by Paul Spitzer in his devnet about
video in papervision. This requires updating a bitmapdata object to
reflect the playhead position of the swf being loaded.
In my code snippet, you can see that all I am ultimately
trying to do is trace out the object being loaded, by referring to
loaderInfo.content. But if I try to run this code, I repeatedly get
    the dreaded:
Error: Error #2099: The loading object is not sufficiently
    loaded to provide this information.
At 50% load, I believe I should be able to access
loaderInfo.content. Is there a better way to work with
loaderInfo.content whilst loading an external swf?
    Thanks for any help.

You need Lightroom 5.5 or later (the most current version is 5.7.1). This is a free update if you have already purchased an earlier version of Lightroom 5.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • Help with Adobe Content

I have installed Adobe Premiere by purchasing it and downloading it from Adobe's web site.  I also downloaded all the content the same way, but everytime I start or go back to a project i get this message, "A reduced set of content (instant movie, themes, title and menu templates, etc.) has been installed".  And it ask if I want to install the full content by inserting DVD or down loading.  I have downloaded this , but how do I know if has fully installed or the content?  Do I just click do not show me this again?  I think I have it completely installed, but I am not 100% sure.  Can anyone help.  I am just trying to create some video slide showes, I am not an expeirce programmer.

I experienced the same thing. I have been using the program only two or three weeks and have been having problems with Instantmovies and themes rendering with missing content, such as intro videos that show up in the thumbnail preview animations. That problem is still unsolved and Adobe tech support says that's how the videos are supposed to render. Anyway, I also had the content failing to stay installed. I would install the content, close the program, reload it and the content would be there an usable. I could also close down the computer, reboot, and reload Premiere Elements and the content would be installed. So the installation was stable. However, when I would leave the computer on for a few hours and return and reload Premiere Elements, the content would not be installed and I'd get a message asking if I wanted to download and install it!
The files would be still there in their folders but the installation had vanished within the program.
Since no one had used anything on the computer while it was sitting idle, I wondered what was going on. I realized that the only thing happening in the computer was that my computer maintenance program, System Mechanic Professional, was scanning and mistakenly identifying the registry entries for the content installation as errors and automatically deleting them. I turned off the automatic error correction, then when it reported errors after reinstalling the content once again, I used System Mechanic's option of seeing what errors it found and choosing to have it ignore that registry entry in future scans. After doing that, I get no more uninstallations of the content.
Do you have a computer maintenance program running in the background?
I thought by completely uninstalling Premiere Elements 10 and reinstalling it and the content, new registry entries (to replace those that had been deleted) would be entered and my current problem would be solved, too, but it hasn't worked.
So I hope this helps you. And if anyone has any way to help with my problem, I have posted a separate thread about it a day or two ago. Please help!

  • Hi everybody, I am trying to create a DVD pal without menu with the program iDVD from a .mov file. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Hi everybody, I am trying to create a DVD pal without menu with the program iDVD from a .mov file. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

    (From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
    1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
    Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html
Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
    Hope this helps!

  • Installing  LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with DL

Have just bought the LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with Double Layer for an incredible price if $44.99. Geeesh, why are they so cheap these days? I did researched this with LaCie customer/tech services and they indicated once the face plate is removed it will install easily into my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B model).
Has anyone else installed this and if so are there any issues to be aware of as part of the install process - oh, and did it work AOK ?
Thanks for any insights and/or feedback on this. I should be getting the LaCie burner next week sometime.

    FYI...
OK - so I received my LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer today. I thought I'd post my install experience before it all faded into the murky past. ;-)) I do this in order to help myself and for others who may wander down this install path. There are a few minor gotchas that if known ahead of time will make the install easier and less thought provoking for having to make decisions on how best to proceed.
Let me say up front, the install was successful, Apple's DVD SuperDrive device design is superb in that it allows easy removal in a dimensionally constrained space and the new LaCie device is now fully operational. I've played a DVD movie, it's compatible with the .Mac Backup 3 program after loading LaCie's software and my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B) now recognizes the device as a DL DVD burner (Vendor Supported). I've yet to use the LightScribe Labeler software, although I've installed it all from the supplied discs and latest updates from LaCie Support web site at http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers and select DVD from the drop down menu selection. I'm very pleased with this LaCie device at this moment.
Here's the install process step by step
    1. First power off and disconnect all external devices from the PM.
    2. Get your wrist strap on and ground yourself to PM casing.
    3. Lay PM on its side and remove metal side panel and remove clear plastic panel.
    4. Rotate both plastic latches that hold the SuperDrive in place.
    5. Disconnect the SuperDrive's flat wire ribbon from Motherboard - it has a convenient handle for pulling it straight up and off. Once disconnected, push it thru the opening to where the SuperDrive casing is located. This will be more obvious when you are actually doing this.
    6. Open the SuperDrive's Alu door by pressing lightly on it and sliding it down.
    7. With Alu door open use a finger nail to engage a portion of the SuperDrive's tray opening and push up and towards yourself and at same time with other hand pull up the rear most portion of the SuperDrive's casing. The drive should slowly slide away from its feet slots much like for the HDs. Slowly remove the SuperDrive and before it is fully out remove its power connector and then the flat wire ribbon from rear of SuperDrive. The SuperDrive can now be completely removed. Note that on my SuperDrive the flat wire ribbon was attached to SuperDrive's casing with a grey two-sided sticky pad. Remove the ribbon carefully from this and then remove the sticky gray pad and affix it to the same place on the LaCie device. Rememeber the wire ribbon's orientation as you will need to re-install this a little later.
    8. Remove the 4 black screw feet from the SuperDrive's lower surface. You will need a torx screw driver and may have to begin by losening them with pliers. Take these and screw them into the same spots on the base of the LaCie device.
    9. Remove the stainless steel face plate from the SuperDrive - ply up the end wraps and it will slide and pull off easily. Place this onto the LaCie device.
    10. Put the SuperDrive aside as you're all done with it now,
    11. Press the tray release button on the LaCie device and pull off its plastic face plate - comes of easily.
    12. This next step is a bit tricky, a bit time consuming and some care is needed. The LaCie tray eject button needs to be removed (you will notice on Apple's SuperDrive it's also missing, and there's a good reason for this). Use a small screw driver and pry up the right side (looking straight at the front surface of the LaCie device) of the button. It will come up and rotate to left some. The button is held on by a small plastic C-shape tab. Rotate the button to left until it comes off. This button cannot be left attached as when the LaCie device is installed the PM's Alu door opening mechanism will contact and interfer with the button and engage and press it down. Obviously this will make the LaCie device (and of course the removed Apple SuperDrive) think the tray needs opening.
    13. Leave the jumper on the LaCie device in its default "Master" location. This should be the right-most two-pin position looking at the rear of the LaCie device.
    14. Almost there - attach power connector and flat wire ribbon to rear of LaCie device and press the flat wire ribbon onto the sticky grey pad and slide the LaCie device into its holding slots by aligning those black screw feet with the slots. You may need to guide the other end of the wire ribbon thru the lower opening to the motherboard. Once the LaCie is in place connect the wire ribbon to the motherboard.
    14. Relatch the plastic levers to secure the LaCie device firmly in place.
    15. All done - so replace the plastic and metal side panel, reconnects things up and power on the PM. Go straight to the ASP and make sure the LaCie device is recognized and all the info is being displayed correctly. It will show Burn Supprt of Yes (Unsupported). Don't worry, once you install the included LaCie software is will show "Yes (Vendor Supported)".
Total time taken was around 2 hrs as I had to pause several times trying to figure out how to remove the SuperDrive with care and without any instructions to go by.
My LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer cost me $45 from Buy.com and it does come with two disc blanks - a Verbatim LightScribe 1x-52x CD-R 700MB and a Verbatim 16x SL DVD+R.
I recorded all the gory details from the LaCie device before installing it. Here's that info.
