DVD's crash consistently when watched

Whenever I try to watch a dvd for more than an hour or so, the computer consistently freezes, unable to force quit, resulting in a forced restart. All films seem to crash at least once. I am watching using idvd. This is a very frustrating problem, especially with all the piracy stuff you are forced to watch each time you start a dvd!
anyone had similar problems/know any solutions?
thanks

QUOTE I've had a similar problem with my G4 I-Mac.
It had problems recognising CD-RWs and just rejected them out of hand. It was better with the higher speed CDs though. Last night my daughter said the computer wouldn't play a (legal) copy of 'Finding Nemo'. I put it down to the fact it was scratched to ****. (This is why I copy the films in the first place) I therefore copied the original again and tried to play it. Again it was rejected by the I-Mac. Thinking it was because I'd burned it on a DVD+R disc, I copied it again this time onto a DVD-R disc, but again it was rejected. Then tried it on our TV DVD player and it was fine.
SO................(finally gets to the point of this long post), I used a 2 brush wet laser lens cleaner, proprietary name 'discwasher digital' and hey presto, no problem with the I-Mac reading Nemo or my CD-RWs.
-Might be worth a try!

  • Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs

Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional and it is able to read the PDFs. Preview declares that "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." and crashes. It is less than graceful. I also have noticed that every time it crashes, I lose 40MB of disk space.
Other than individually marking "bad" files as acrobat files are there any solutions to this poor behavior by preview.
I also need to know how to recover the disk space. I have no idea where the files are being created. I checked /cores, but no joy.

    Hi,
Try deleting the Preview and Sidebar preference files.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Preview.plist and the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.

  • Crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object

CS4 InDesign crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object. Preferences have been reloaded, the program has been reinstalled, all without any effect towards this issue. Any suggestions?

Yeah, it was InDesign Hangs when right clicking on graphic.
There was a lot of head-scratching and the rather unsatisfying conclusion was when the OP removed ancient applications that might have been a choice for "Edit Original," then the problem went away.
I guess the conclusion is that right-clicking on an image iterates over the possible apps that can open an image (for Edit With and Edit Original) and does [something], and for some reason that [something] was hanging. Not clear what the app was. But presumably if you right click the file in the Finder and look at the list provided by Open With, it is similar.
Or you could try the suggestions I offered to the OP in that thread that it looks like he never used.

  • RoboHelp 10 Crashes consistently when trying to delete linked FM11 book

I have a linked project where RoboHelp absolutely refuses to display part of a topic and some of the images. So I decided to delete the linked FM book file and start again from scratch (this was a FM10/RH9 project originally). This causes RH to crash consistently. Any ideas?

I thought that moving my project location to a shorter path had solved my Cross references issue, but it hasn't. Here is a page from the Help:
These are all the same Heading style in FM
The X Refs are all to headings within the Current FM file
They are all the same Cross Reference Format (Heading & Page)
Thje Cross Reference conversion setting is set to Para Text in RH

    Hi jcooker,
A Mac if On and Awake 24/7 will automatically run what are called Cron sripts that deal with clearing Logs and cache files. If it sleeps the running of these gets later and later creating bigger files.
If you restart some of the Cron functions are run at Start Up

  • Generate Image Assets crashes Photoshop when making half-size pngs from groups

I've been getting Photoshop CC to crash consistantly when I try to generate scaled-down pngs from a layer group.  If I have generate image assets on and change a group name to "50% name.png", Photoshop instantly crashes.  If generate assets is off and I change a group name to "50% name.png" Photoshop does not crash until I try turning on generate assets, and then it crashes instantly.  Trying "50% name.png, name_full.png" also fails.  This has occured in different files.  It does not happen in every file or every time, but it happens very often.
    I'm using Windows 8 and Photoshop CC 14.1.1 x64.

    Hi.
I’ve installed the latest photoshop update (14.2.1 x64). Unfortunately the new update makes me now impossible to use the generator routine. My project needs “decades” longer to realise that I’ve activated the generator in the File menu. I click on Generate->Image Assets and nothing happens… first. After half a minute or so the checkbox eppear finally. You must know: I have more than 100 Layers to be generated to single images. A lot of them are smart objects or groups.
When I finally save my file to start the generate routine, I needs a lot ( ! ) longer to generate the images than before.
Additionally my main problem is stil lthere: Impossible to rename any layer or activate the blending menue, while the generator runs.
So with this update I’ve to wait much much longer to activate or deactivate the generate routine. Deactivating needs a long time too… What have you done there Adobe? (Sorry for this words.)
@Adobe support: Please contact me personally via mail if possible and I will send you the project file where this problem appear. I can’t publish the file for everybody, sorry guys.
Do someone knows how to go back to the prevoius installation? Really sad about the generator. A must buy argument and actually a real time saver.

  • ITunes 10.0.0.68 Crash when watching purchased iStore content (TV) Vista 64

I recently upgraded to iTunes 10. I'm running on a Vista 64 bit machine. I have a number of dvd/blue ray ecopies in my library, along with content from CDs I've purchased, and an iPhone 3GS. This weekend I purchased my first TV season from the iStore (this was after iTunes upgrade to 10.x was applied). I purchased the HD version of the TV shows. So, yes, 2 versions were downloaded. As I understand it, the HD version plays on my computer and the lower res version is used for the iPhone (or other portable devices).
While watching the TV content after it downloaded, I experienced a series of iTunes crashes. When this occurred, the OS reported a DEP error. Of course, you can't set the DEP to not run with iTunes.exe - the system reports that DEP must run with iTunes. It's not clear to me if this is by design on Apple's side or not. So, disabling DEP when running iTunes is not an option for a Vista user.
I've spent the last several hours reading a number of forum posts, including several from this site. I did uninstall everything, per an article on the Apple support site and referenced a couple of times by B Noir as well. It seemed reasonable and when I looked at the Programs installed, I noticed that the installation date for the Bonjour service and Apple Software Update was different than the iTunes. This may not have mattered, but I've seen stranger stuff. I tried a repair of QuickTime before taking this great leap, but this had no effect. I did follow the complete steps as listed, including checking for stray residue after the uninstall ran. I did run a registry sweep after the uninstall and rebooted the system.
iTunes continues to crash when viewing purchased TV show content after all of these steps. As I have nothing to compare it with as far as the performance of previous versions of iTunes with purchased TV show content, I can't say with authority it is strictly an iTunes 10.x event. However, having watched more than 30 minutes of 3 different movies I have in my library (from the ecopy of dvd/blue ray), and playing several cd tracks, I believe I can state that this iTune crash only occurs with purchased content - TV shows in my case.
My iPhone 3GS syncs fine. In fact, I was able to place one of the TV shows on the phone and it plays just fine on the phone. Of course, that is the low-res version.

There are a series of Bonjour Service errors in the Application log as well. All of these occur after the iTunes Application Error and Windows Error Reporting are logged. At this point, I assume they are related to the iTunes crash -
    EventData
440: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)
It seems like this problem is occurring for many Vista and Windows 7 64 bit users (with regard to iTunes crashing when trying to play purchased content) and I'm hoping that power users in this forum can take this more detailed report of the problem and figure it out - or convince the Apple team to address it. I'd be glad to try any suggestions or provide logs if desired (let me know where to look for the logs if applicable).

Odd ... that BEX error citing the QuickTimePlayer.dll (like the DEP errors and the unknown module for the iTunes errors) also suggests old, misplaced QuickTime componentry. But the lack of any QuickTime Player launch errors, or at least relentless "software out of date" messages, speaks against that possibility.
... I think we'd better check for old, misplaced QuickTime componentry anyway, just in case. (The symptom-set for that sort of trouble is in a constant state of flux anyway, so the lack of launch errors probably can't be taken as conclusively speaking against it.)
First we'll need to adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Open.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now we'll go looking for old QuickTime stuff in the most likely locations for it to show up.
In Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
*If you have a 32-bit version of Windows,* open the "System32" folder.
*If you have a 64-bit version of Windows,* open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files or folders with QuickTime in the file or folder name can you see in there? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.

  • My iMovie 11 is consistently crashing particularly when I attempt to share.  Help?

My iMovie 11 is consistently crashing particularly when I attempt to share, i.e. MobileMe, YouTube.  Help?  I would like to uninstall iMovie 11 and re-install.  Is this a good idea? The Mac App Store won't let me re-install.  Would appreciate any comments.

If you hold down the Option key then launch the AppStore that usually 'resets' the program to allow you to re-download any purchase you have made. I did this recently with Mac OS X Lion 10.7 because I wanted to make an install DVD from the download. I thought I missed my chance altogether after I ran the original install. It deletes the file from the Applications folder once it completes. But someone wrote up a really good step-by-step set of instructions on how to get the Download back. So Option key is the secret to downloading any purchases after you downloaded them the first time.
You can also try doing Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose the Large size). Then quit iMovie altogether, launch a web browser and navigate directly to the upload page say on YouTube? Upload it through the web browser and that might be easier than sharing directly.

  • How do I turn off computer monitor when watching DVD movie on TV monitor?

I think this is really a Leopard question because it involves setting up 2 monitors in System Preferences within OSX. 1) I have a wide screen TV connected to my iMac (Intel White Late 2006) through the Mini-DVI port and a separate audio cable. This connection works fine. 2) The purpose of the TV screen is only to watch DVDs using the DVD player and iDVD in my iMac. 3) In System Preferences->Displays->Arrangement, both my computer monitor and the TV screen appear as separate monitors. I have the setting to mirror each other. With this setting, the DVD movie plays on both the iMac computer screen and on the TV screen. 4) FINALLY, MY QUESTION: When watching a DVD on the TV screen, I would like to turn off the monitor in my iMac so that the screen is dark (in sleep mode to save power, etc.); I want only the TV screen to display the movie. How do I turn off only the iMac screen? Thank you. Dale

That's impossible. It can only be done on a laptop but not on an iMac.

  • Aspect ratio issue when watching 16'9 idvd created DVDs on regular players

I am having problems with the aspect ratio of any DVDs that I burn in iDVD as 16'9 - The original video is 16'9 and edited as such in FCP, then exported with current settings selected and then in iDVD I select a widescreen project - preview of the project is fine and when the DVD is done it plays with the correct aspect ratio if I watch on the computer's internal DVD player - but my issue is when I watch on any regular DVD player (on a widescreen tv of course) all the video looks tall and skinny, including the menu.  The only way I found to get the video to look like it's natural proportion is to switch the settings to 4'3 on the DVD player, then it creates almost a "super-widescreen" look where there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen.  On the otherhand, when i used to shoot in 4'3 and create DVDs as 4'3 projects, I NEVER had this problem when watching on a regular DVD player on widescreen TV!  It would take up the whole screen and look normal (I know it must stretch it to fit, but it wasn't noticable).  I thought creating a 16'9 video I should be able to watch on a widescreen TV and it should take up the whole screen and look normal.  Please help!

  • Moving/vibrating background pixels when watching a DVD

Ive noticed when watching a DVD (its the only video test ive run), that there is all this "noise" in background, or on still objects (say it curtain). it looks as though very tiny pixels vibrating alot. (they are whatever colour the environment is), so its basically just distortion of whatever im looking at. they move really really fast. Is this normal? I expected the picture to be sharp and crystl clear.

Just from looking at your picture I would say it is a "film grain".
Most feature movies are shot on wet film, not digital and the noise is natural.
A lot of movies shot in HD are post-processed to add the film grain, just to make them look more natural. In short, not seeing any pixelation or colour banding in your shot - this is exactly what the DOP had in mind - film grain.

  • When watching a DVD slideshow that I made using iDVD on TV there are silent intermittent glitches throughout a 30 minute project. What is causing this?

When watching a dvd on the TV that I burned using idvd, there are intermittent sound glitches spaced throughout a 30 minute slide show. There will be about 3 or 4, they last for a a couple of seconds, then the show resumes. What is causing this and is there something I can do to fix this. The show works perfectly on the computer.

    Hi
    a. < Hard Drive with an available space of 12GB > If this is the Main hard disk
the free space is way to low ! ! should be minimum 25Gb for iDVD to work as intended
    b. In iDVD 1-6 You can't set burn speed - it read from DVD discs and x16 is way
to high to get an usable result. (In iDVD08 this can be set to x1)
    Way around:
    • In iDVD save as DiskImage (File menu and down)
    TEST this with Apple DVD-player.
    • If it doesn't play OK try to use another encoder
    • I use Best Performance - avoids the Best Quality though I don't think it is
(In iDVD08 there is Pro Quality - I love it.)
    • Burn this to a DVD WITH Apple Disk Util tool where You can set burn speed
or use Roxio Toast™ My favourite way - so easy.
    I use Verbatim
    I use only DVD-R (No +R or +/-RW)

  • Mac mini fan is very loud when watching a dvd

    Hi,
Just bought a Mac mini (2GBRam 2GHz intel) and when watching a dvd the fan spins very loud which gets very annoying! Is this normal for watching dvd's on the Mini as I have a Macbook with similar specs and there is not much sound from that when watching dvd's. I installed 10.5.1 on the Mini and the Macbook still has 10.4.11...Any ideas?

The reset is always worth trying, just in case the problem is in the system controller. However, I'm not sure that I'd blame MacOS itself for the problem, because it does not appear to be similarly reported elsewhere. As such, I'd say that if you can't resolve this with a reset, you may find the next best option is an erase and install of Leopard, followed by downloading and installing the 10.5.1 update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1051update.html
Of course, since an erase and install wipes the hard drive, it is essential you back up your data before you do this!
