DVD's don't always play...am I doing something wrong?

Hey, sorry if this has been posted several times before...I have dvds that play fine on higher end dvd players, but won't on "off" brand players...I'm using FCP4 and DVDStudio Pro3. I use compressor from FC and export as mpeg 2 with a 2hour setting. I then imput the compressor Audio/video files into DVD SP, build and format the dvd. I don't have any problems playing on a good player, but my clients complain that they have problems on an off brand player...is this to be expected on these consumer created dvds, or am I doing something wrong? Thankyou for your input

ok, i'm looking at compressor and don't see the audio format that has been talked about to use. The one that has been used is under the MPEG-2 120 Min high quality encode. The following is a copy and paste of the summary for each preset.
Video Preset:
Name: MPEG-2 120min High Quality Encode
Description: 3.5Mbps,2-Pass VBR,4:3
File Extension: m2v
Video Encoder
Format: M2V
Width and Height: Automatic
Pixel aspect ratio: default
Crop: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Aspect ratio: 4:3
Field dominance: Auto detect
Average data rate: 3.5 (Mbps)
2 Pass VBR enabled
Maximum data rate: 7.5 (Mbps)
High quality
Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
Audio Preset:
Name: DVD PCM Audio
Description: AIFF 48Khz,16bit,Stereo
File Extension: aiff
Audio Encoder
Format: QT
Sample Rate: 48.000kHz
Channels: 2
Bits Per Sample: 16
Codec Type: Uncompressed
I looked under the different compression settings and it says the encoder is AIFF, but under the settings for it, it doesn't list AC3. My Compressor version is 1.2.1
Also, how does all the settings look for the video...see any prolems that would explain the low end players messing up?
Thanks again for the help...its appreciated!

To convert a DVD for iPod use, you'll need to use third-party software.
You'll first need decrypting software to remove the encryption on the DVD.
Then you'll need conversion software to convert the decrypted files into an iPod friendly format.
Sometimes, both of those tasks can be accomplished with one piece of software.
PQ DVD seems to be popular for Windows users, as well as ImTOO.

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

I know, I always do that but I was in a rush to get somewhere and I was relying on my thousand dollar Mac to do some kind of recovery or something. I know Microsoft always keeps temporary files (I think Mac does too, part of me asking here in this forum was for someone to tell me where I can find those files) and when you go to open Office Works then it gives you the option of opening the last recent documents, saved or not saved.
I usually copy paste into my emial just in case something goes wrong with the created document but I just didn't have the time to login and do all that My loss, you live and you learn, BUT still if ANYONE got any info on this, PLEASE DO CHIME IN *keeping the hope alive*

  • DVD burned on iDVD stutters on DVD player. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi there, i'm new to burning DVD's and using this Apple Disscusion, so please bare with me!
So, I tried to use iDVD to burn a home movie onto my disk which is:
    Aone
    8X
    DVD-R
    120 Minutes
    4.7GB
Everything seemed to burn fine onto my disk and played back perfectly on my Macbook, however when I put the disk into my Samsung DVD player, the movie is unwatchable. The audio and video stutters, pauses, skips; even on the menu screen and then at about 3:50, the movie flicks back to the start.
I don't think it is the DVD player or the disk as it plays other DVD's perfectly, even one from a friend with home movies on using the exactly the same disk.
Therefore I was wondering if is iDVD doing this? If so, is there any way of solving this problem? I am currently burning at a speed of 8X, does this need to be different? Also in Project Info, the encoding is set to professional quality. Other options in Project Info include:
    Video Mode - PAL
    Aspect Ratio - Widescreen (16:9)
    DVD Type - Single-Layer (SL) - 4.2 GB
I hope I have given all the information needed,
Any help would be greatly appricated!
    Thankyou!

If You keep frame rate from start to end. Then my next thought is about material used. That this might create a problem for iDVD and resulting DVD-disk.
My collection of thoughts (mine and others)
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • DVD main track won't play on standalone DVD players

    Hi!
I have a problem and I was wondering if anybody could help me here.
So, i got a DVD which I had to reauthor so I demuxed the disc with bbdemux and got an m2v and an audio file. I could import both files to DVDSP without using compressor. Than I added a first play track which is 20seconds long and after it goes to the menu. The menu has a main play button and a button to the track selection menu. I added the demuxed files to a second track, created the chapters, linked all the buttons, defined everything about the dvd. Then I built it and then burned it. It was all working in DVD Player and VLC, then I tried in my standalone DVD player and everything worked just like I wanted until I pushed the play button in the menu and it kind of blocked, it showed me the first frame of the chapter and it stopped. Nothing happened but the timer on the DVD player was counting. I tought I might have f*d up the bitrates, so I lowered them, no difference. Then I deleted the first track, left only the menu 'cause I tought it was "confusing" him. No, then I deleted all the menus and burned the disc only with the main track but no luck... I know it has to do something with the track files but what??? I have a JVC DVD player and it always played every dvd 'till now... I don't know what's the problem... Please help! So, it kind of freezes on the start of every chapter.

so I demuxed the disc with bbdemux
You can try MPEG Streamclip to extract the original encoded files from the DVD. Probably the other demuxer did something to the original tracks.
    Hope that helps !

  • Can not play songs due to something with original file missing.

Hello, Just recently a lot of my songs can not be played because all of a sudden When i try to play the song it says, the song "song" could not be played because the original file could not be found, would you like to locate it? but it just happened to a ton of my songs after i finally decided to have it all organized into the itunes folder, didnt realise i hadn't before.
I have about 300-400 or even more songs that are recieving this error message.

kidsbesides74 I am with you there man, I know I sound like the usual Mac poster, but yes I have been a Mac head forever and have had every iPod/iTunes since the first, but I am STUCK, I have tried all these suggestions, but I can not get the bulk of my iTunes collection, ( 2000 of over 4000) songs to play because of the same problem, It just says that this Apple ID does not exist even though I can see it right there in the >Get Info for each of these songs. I will have to call Apple directly in the morning, I just hope they don't do that thing where they say that I must be doing something wrong. Is there a limit of two Apple ID's , I now have two Apple ID's here at the house and a third at the office could that be the problem ? if so, how do I get the songs I paid for folded into my other account?

Perian 1.2.3 *should* work for both QuickTime & and QTX in Mountain Lion. Regardless of the filetype container, whether it is a Matroska (.mkv) or a .mov. As to the actual encoding of the file (h264, .mp2, whatever..) I have found most play, even older formats.
Even though it's no longer supported and is a dead project, it works just fine. It will load as a System Preference file and adds to the Other category in them.
I think in 10.8 you've still got support for QTX so it may work with that. (in Mavericks, it only works for QT7)
If not, just run QuickTime 7.6.6.

If no luck there, you could also try VLC at http://www.videolan.org

I haven't changed any settings regarding region codes

You may have run discs from different regions, these would be commercial DVDs. If so most DVD players need to be told what region the disc is from. Have you done this by chance, if you are not sure look at the region numbers listed on the commerical DVDs you have and see if some use different numbers.

  • Internal DVD - swapped harddrives - won't play normally

And this is probably my fault - but here we go:-
I just obtained a iMac DV 400 ( OS10.1 as I had to erase the HD for the person who gave it to me to make sure none of her stuff was left on it)) - internal DVD ROM verified in profiler - but I thought I'd swap a 40GB harddrive (from an Indigo 500 CD-ROM) onto the new Imac DV so my 13 yr old daughter could keep her files and creations etc - as well as her 10.3.9 which came on the Indigo 500CD-ROM when we purchased it - AND still play DVD's.
Now when I originally inserted a DVD - "Five children & It" - onto the iMac DV withit's original !OGB HD the DVD app. came up and played the DVD most admirably.
Now after the swap - when I inserted the DVD I just got contents window - so I copied the DVD player app from the original 10GB HD, and transferred a copy, via THUMBDRIVE, to the IMac's now 40GB HD, and stillonly got a contents window.
But if I pressed on one of the items in the contents window, the DVD actualy ran - albeit slightly jerkily.
But it's not the perfect solution - what am I missing to make the DVD player work properly when I load a DVD.
OH another clue - when I double clicked the transferred DVD Player icon on the newly implanted 40GB - it would sort of leap up as oif it were going to do something but then nothing came of it - the app didn't run.
HOpe I've given you all enough info to start with.
    ciao

PS good to see some familiar faces on this area of the discussions forum.

Hi Don - thanks for your input. Yeah - I notices the VLC software alrady in my application folder and did try it - but I had to go up a notch in version.
Anyway - before I got any response I just re-swapped (is that a word) the harddrives and it all went fine - I'll jsut transfer her stuff by thumbdrive, which I should have done in the first place but I wanted to put in larger capacity HD. Never mind - 10 GB will do for now. I'll bring that machine up to Jaguar 10.2.8 then soon to Panther ( when I go get a copy from a mac dealer who happens to have a few left- here in Perth Australia that is).
Now I'll go post a new question - I'm haven't got GarageBand and I don't even know if one can use it to splice two tracks together or even make an mp3 out of part of a musical track and 'manipulate it in some way - so I'll be looking for a 'free' software that can do that if I can find one.
Thanks again for your participation - it's always good when people offer a few wrokarounds even if they don't know the 'perfect' answer.
    ciao

  • DVD not working properly when played on DVD player

I created a DVD using FCP and DVDSP, it plays fine on my Mac and my regular DVD player. However, it plays once through on a TV Guardian DVD Player and then will not play again. I don't know much about these players but they filter foul language and such when playing DVDs. The DVD that I created doesn't have foul language or anything that would be considered objectionable on it.
Has anyone had experience with these types of players or this situation?
Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   DVD Studio Pro

Another thing to check is your bitRates and whether you encoded the audio to A.Pack/Dolby. I have often seen machines play once or twice then start having playback issues or not play. It can be related to the encode rates (and it may not behave across different machines the same way, in other words it will continue to play fine on some players and not another)
