Dvd's for computers/.BUPfiles/calculating dvd burn time

I've now been told that my film will be watched on a computer. This means that, whatever, the film (which is a QT movie, 5.4 Go exported from FCP) needs to be encoded as MPEG-2? Computer dvd drives can read MPEG-2?
I ask the question because i did manage to create a dvd a few hours ago which i did in Toast. The one with the faded colours when i watch it on TV. But when i try to open it on my mac i get a folder containing files with extensions i don't know: .bup .vob .ifo My mac tells me i have no default application to open them. I get the same message when i try to open the same type of files when i insert the dvd of "Chicago", bought in a shop. Does this mean that the problem lies with the dvd which is not appropriate for a computer, or rather it's because i don't have the necessary program. (What is the most popular program used by Macs to read movies on dvd?)
I have to get this flippin dvd done within 4 hours, and already after trying a mini-test using Compressor, i've calculated that it will take about 4 hours to encode using Fastencode120minmpeg2. Is this normal for a 25 min film? I'm trying to install DVDSP3 right now... I'm going to try ur suggestion of putting my film directly into studio pro. Maybe the encoding will go faster than with Compressor. After that i have to burn the dvd too. With a 8x machine how long should that take? I mean how do u calculate?
If u still have time david ... or anyone else... i'd be grateful for help.

OK Shane. Thanks. So the problem is that i need a DVD playing application? I'm new to OSX and never really looked into it. I guess that OSX 3.9 does not come with a DVD player? I heard that VLC is one i can download free. Does anyone know if it's a good one?
As for the other question, will a mpeg2 play on a comp? And do those compression times i talked about seem normal? Maybe it's because i only have a 466Mhz processor? Is the think that took toast a long time the encoding? Or does the actual writing onto the dvd take a long time too?
Thanks for ur help

  • Normal DVD burn Time?

I'm burning 1 .avi and 2 .dat movies to a dvd. Together, they take up about 3.5 gb of space.
I'm using toast to burn them. How long should a burn of this type take? This is really my first time burning a DVD, so I have absolutely no idea. It really seems like it is taking forever. It has been at least 30-45 minutes and the DVD is only 18% complete.
    I m using toast titanium 8.
IF anyone can give me any idea I'd tremendously appreciate it. I'm just curious to see if I'm doing something wrong or something is just not functioning properly

If Toast is encoding at all then it can take quite a deal of time. Otherwise, as stated earlier it should take less than 30 minutes.

  • Prebuy Ques: External DVD - Burner Burn Time?

I have a ton of files on CDs & ZIP disks. They take up a LOT of physical space. I want to categorize and burn them to DVD's so I can discard the ZIP disks, wipe most off my external LaCie HD and regain some storage space.
I've read several comments here about oh-so-slow DVD burning times.
So I have several related questions. I have a LaCie Burner on Order.
    It comes with Toast.
Must a DVD be burnt in one session?
    Or is multi-session burning possible?
Hopw much free space do I need when burning DVDs?
How long does it take to burn a DVD given my system's configuration?
    Thanks in advance for responses.

    1. If you buy DVD-R or DVD-RW media, yes. DVD-R media doesn't support multisession burning.
    3. If you're using the Finder, you may need up to 9.4GB available on your hard disk to burn a DVD. Toast has a lower requirement.
    4. As long as the DVD burner is connected through FireWire and you're burning a data DVD, you can burn a DVD in approximately one or two hours. Burning a DVD over the USB port on your machine will take much longer(and may not be possible at all), and trying to burn a video DVD will take several hours or days on a G3-based system.

  • Revisiting DVD burn speeds

In an effort to better my DVD burn times, I upgraded to a new internal DVD 8x/Dual Layer drive.
After installation, I burned a DVD of previously recorded material that I had also burned on the old drive.
Much to my disgust, the new 8x drive using the same 8x rated media burned at the same old 2x speed!
I burn with Toast 7. Out of curiosity I clicked on RECORDER>DISK INFO and found out the following about my blank DVDs (HP dvd-r 8x):
    Write Speeds 1X, 2X
Then there a manufacture ID with a MORE button that takes you to a web site that tells you all about the reliability of the media and even comments from users.
The surprising thing for me was that even though the disk is labeled 8X, Toast rated it for much lower speeds. And it only burned at 2X
Then I found another site with some good DVD media info at:
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
So I guess before I shout too loud that my iMac's burn speeds are slow, i need to look for better recording media.

Not all media is created equally. Drives include in their firmware a list of write strategies for various brands of media. If the drive doesn't have a write strategy for the particular media that you are using it will make an attempt to burn the disc, usually at a slower speed (you would rather it worked but be slow, than be fast and fail). In some rare cases you will get a power calibration error, where the drive just couldn't figure out what to do with your media.
Toast isn't doing the speed limiting, the drive is telling Toast what it can burn the disc at.
I would stick with purchasing name brand DVD, Iike Verbatim, most drives include their media in their wrtie strategy lists.

My experience with Lacie and Sony burners has always been positve and Toast is good to have around, it's always complimented iDVD well (in addition to having a host of other useful features).
    Note:
I'm not familiar with any of Toast 6 lite's features, but I do know you can burn DVD's with it. It adds another means of authoring a DVD outside of iDVD.

  • DVD Burn problem. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use"

    Hello everyone,
I initially had a lot of problems with PE8. However the nVidia driver update solved most of them.
Just thought it was important to report success as well as failure!
However one problem remains. I get the following error at the 96% mark while burning. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use". It is always at the 96% mark and the program is "compiling [something]" when this happens.
Having searched this site I notice that user rgferg posted a similar problem 13 days ago but was redirected to repost in a different place, but never did.
I have tried to burn a 1hr clip 4 times and every time I have selected the slower burn speed (8MB/s) as has been suggested. It seems that inferior media is a culprit, so I have bought some [quality] Verbatim DVD-R media to try in my Phillips SATA optical drive. I am sceptical this will work, but open minded nonetheless. I will give it a whirl when my computer has stopped capturing the VHS I am working on.
Each time the burn failed the disk was automatically ejected and the burn process had actually started and progressed perhaps ~40% or so.
This indicates to me that it is a drive sharing issue, rather than a media issue. Somewhere on this forum it suggests that I go through a 20+ step process and delete/disable every piece of software that can compete with Premiere among other things. IF I do this what do I burn with outside of Adobe? Do I have to get imgburn or whatever it was called? What if I like Nero? Nero 6 has worked great for me for 3 years.
So given I am willing to uninstall my old optical drive burning software, who out there can recommened commercial software that for them creates a painless Adobe burning experience with no errors or conflicts? Perhaps there is another solution that I did not see on this forum?
I am running Windows XP SP3. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my SLI GeForce 7600 GS cards. I have 3 monitors. RAID 0 SATA, 2GB RAM, Athlon X2 5400.
    Justin.

OK been working through the list of 20 things Adobe recommends to fix DVD burn error. No luck yet:
    system meets minimum requirements
Project size does not exceed disk capacity
successfully burned project to DVD folder -thus skip to step 8.
      8.   Using new blank media for burning
      9.   Try different media and DVD burners. Bought Verbatim DVD-R. Don't have another DVD burner. Adobe's supported burner list is VERY short, so of course mine is not on it.
      10.  Uninstalled Nero 6. Did NOT uninstall Acronis True Image workstation or Lightscribe. These do not access the drive unless I say so!
      11.  Have not yet disabled startup items and services. This will take a lot of work and will leave to last. Deactivated Spybot thus far.....
      12.  Disabled IMAPI CD burning COM
      13.  DMA if available already set. Haven't set this in BIOS yet. I already think it is, but will check next boot.
      14.  Updated DVD firmware
      15.  Already updated nVidia drivers
      16.  Don't have any other DVD drives to disconnect.
      17.  MPEG workaround. Will resort to if required.
      18.  Disable Autoplay? XP only has "prompt me each time to choose an action". I have set this for ALL file types.
      19.  Have NOT refreshed the DVD drivers in the registry. This step involves uninstalling PE8. Will leave this as last resort.
      20.  Visit forums to see if other have the same problem. Hi guys
So still working through some of the items above.
Can anyone direct me to advice on how to write the encoded files sent to the hard drive, or the VOB files that PE8 failed to burn to a disk? Will the former work with DVD menus?
    What a process.
    Stay tuned.
    Justin.

looking for a external blu ray dvd burner for my mac

There are plenty of options but I have found that the LaCie d2 http://blu-ray.burnworld.com/burners/lacie-d2.htm works more consistantly. I use Toast 11 mainly for Blu-Ray. The drive does come with a basic verison of the software which is good for most but you need to upgrade to do some serious authoring.

  • Buying an external DVD burner, what to look for?

Hi, I am buying an external DVD burner in the morning, anything I should look for feature wise, any models which are recommended?
    Cheers, S.

Patrica, we'll forgive you this once! For future reference at the top of each Discussions Forum section there's a blue "Post a New Topic" link - that's where you start. Anyway as to your problem as to what to do now. You can ignore the "Easy Media Creator" disc - this is an application for Windows machines.
All you need now is a blank DVD to record onto. Usually LaCie include a complimentary DVD-R disc - didn't you get one?
It's useful because it will give you a good idea as to which brand of disc works best with your burner. My LaCie likes Maxell and Verbatim but not TDK even though it's on LaCies's approved list (which you can find on their website). Buy a small pack until you are sure they work OK. Whether you get DVD-R or DVD+R is up to you, but the minus format tends to work better with domestic DVD players.
I don't know what you want to burn onto DVD - is it files or movies? If it's the former you have all the software you need in Disk Utility. As far as I know iDVD on the other hand doesn't work with an external burner (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!) you need to buy something like Toast for that. I notice also that you're in the PowerBook forum although you have an iMac! Does this not have an internal DVD writer? I thought all versions of the G5 had a SuperDrive? My final bit of advice to you would be to get yourself whichever of these http://www.missingmanuals.com/ you feel you might need. Certainly the 10.3 book will help you enormously. Good luck.

  • Cannot install WinDVD for my DVD burner.

I just got a new Lenovo 43N3264 DVD burner but I was unable to install the InterVideo WinDVD software on my Toshiba Netbook NB505.  There was an error message: This is not a valid IBM system.  Setup will now abort. . .  I thought an external DVD drive would work with any other make of PC or laptop.  Please help.

If you are trying to install the Win DVD setup file which came with your lenovo on your Toshiba it won't work out since it is specifically bundled with the Lenovo (It may be one of the license restrictions)

  • Two computers, one DVD burner

Problem: I have two MACs, a new intel iMAC with iDVD 6 and no DVD burner, and an older "lamp" iMAC with iDVD 5 and a DVD burner. I would like to burn a DVD with a iDVD 6 project I have archived onto an external hard drive (using the burner on the old computer). [ I can access the external drive in either computer.] Can I use the old computer to burn the archived file to a DVD - a "real" DVD that will run on a TV with my DVD player? Can I do it just using disc utility on the "old" computer. And how do I go about doing this? Or, do I need "Toast" to do this - would toast work on the old computer with OS 10.3.9?
I was able to burn a disk image of the file to an apple DVD-R disc, but the DVD player only plays it on the "old" computer, and not on the intel iMAC nor on my DVD player for the TV. What am I missing?
    Thanks for any help.

I was able to burn a disk image of the file to an apple DVD-R disc, but the DVD player only plays it on the "old" computer, and not on the intel iMAC nor on my DVD player for the TV. What am I missing?
It sounds like you didn't burn the disk image to writable media correctly with Disk Utility. A video DVD must be in UDF format to play in set-top players. It sounds like you created a DVD in Mac OS Extended format.
Use iDVD 6 on your intel Mac to create a disk image file (an option under FILE). You must then transfer that file (which might be as large as 4 GB) to your older iMac by first writing the image file to your external drive (you should be able to simply create it on that external drive out of iDVD 6).
You then must use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast and your older iMac to burn the disk image to writable media properly. Simply burning from the Finder creates a Mac OS Extended format disc as you have found out.

  • Best dvd burner for Mac mini

What brand of DVD burner is most compatible with the Mac Mini? I haven't found one that specifically lists Mac OS in the specifications information.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Many brands are compatible, including Pioneer for example, but for the Mac mini, I'd start with http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/ for internal and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for externals. Of the latter, http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MRBFWU2D112/ would be my own choice for DVD burner at reasonable price.
This supplier specializes in Mac peripherals, and these devices will certainly work. There are other suppliers and other brands of course, but the above is a good place to start.

  • Rate SONY 820 UL/T DVD burner for burning iMovies-what's better?

I have an iMac G5 with internal CD burner, but not DVD burner. I do have the iDVD and iMovie software--so I installed this external driver to burn iMovie projects and after hours of messing around with my blessed iMac G5 and mystified SONY support techs finally learned it won't burn iMovie or Quicktime movies with Mac software bundle it comes with (Roxio Toast Lite 6..) Should I send back driver and get something else, or stick with it and upgrade to Toast 7? I am frustrated since the Sony/Mac software bundle leads you to believe you CAN burn your videos.

    Hello Artcart,
the main difference between iDVD and Toast is, that iDVD is primarily an authoring software (it authors the structure of the DVD with possibility of multiple menus, movies/slideshows) while Toast is a disc burning app ( with the possibility of encoding movies for DVD).
If you look through the iDVD discussion board you'll find that most users adopt the "divide and conquer" method:
    1. Author the DVD in iDVD because it gives you more choices for menus etc.
    2. Create a disk image (a file that behaves like a DVD, but is stored on your HDD)
    3. Burn the image file to DVD with Toast (more reliable for burning)
I should be able to select/drag my (NTSC formatted) iMovie project into Toast and the SONY drive will indeed burn a nice DVD for me?
Absolutely. Toast does the encoding, but offers you only a very simple menu (start-up screen). if that is sufficient for you, you can do without iDVD.
To add this: I've been using an external LaCie burner for the last 2 years to create DVDs for a living, and have had a very low failure rate .... no worries
I am not sure what "menu" selection you mean--the "play" title menues offered in iDVD?
    Yep.
    hope this helps

  • Backup is asking for a dvd - why when don't have dvd burner?

When trying to use the backup feature of version 8 I'm getting the message, "There is a file whose size is bigger than that of a blank CD. You need to insert a blank DVD." I don't have a dvd burner and can't find a file bigger than a cd.

i'm not sure about the whole not having a file bigger than a cd, but the main reason that it's asking for a DVD is that DVDs have a larger capacity than CDs. iTunes is trying to help you save money by using fewer discs by burning your backup of the iTunes library to a DVD instead of a regular CD.
unfortunately, i don't know of any way for u to burn a backup if it won't let you use a CD...sorry...

  • Best External dvd burner for dual layer disks?

    Hi everyone,
At some point my internal dvd burner in my mac book pro died, and apple replaced it. After that, I couldn't burn a dual layer disk. They've changed it twice more to accomodate me (the genius bar is awesome), but I still only have mediocre results. No problem burning regular dvds or cds. So I wondered is there a REALLy good external burner for DVD-DL that you have experience with? Thanks!

A good bootable multi-interface enclosure (empty) for an external CD/DVD drive will run about US$70.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRSFW8U2RF/
They also sell SATA drives pre-installed in that same enclosure.
Many users find installing an internal drive themselves no more difficult than doing a memory upgrade themselves.
Others prefer not to work inside their computer.
Based on your graphics card and the original drive, I expect your Mac Pro is an older model. All before 2009 accept an ATA INTERNAL drive such as this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/Mac_Pro_Xeon
That page also has a video of how to install a replacement DVD drive.
