DVD's sticking

Hi, I have created a movie in iMovie, imported it to iDVD and created a project with some avi files - so far so good! I've burnt the DVD and plays fine if I play it back on the Mac, however, if I try and play it any other DVD player it keeps sticking. Sometimes it starts again after a second or 2, and sometimes I have to go back to the menu.
The sticking seems to always be in the same place.
Has anyone come across this problem? If so, did you find a solution?
Thanks

avi's come in many different flavors (not one of iDvd's strong points btw). some work, some don't. and it is a real pain in the neck when they don't work as expected. You can try mpegstreanclip or visual hub and see if it helps. Yes, I have dealt with this same issue before. Most of the time i simply leave it alone or try a different dvd player.
But when I absolutely cannot afford this kind of mistake/s, I first burn a disc image to the desktop, and I then test the image with apple's dvd player app. If it plays as expected, then I lower the burn speed to 4x or lower and use Verbatim or Maxell Dvd-R.
At least one time, after doing all of the above it still paused in the very same spot and like you I'd be forced back to the main menu within iDvd. And in this one instance I simply gave up.....
That is I gave up using iDvd to burn this image to Dvd-R. Instead I used Roxio Toast (fully expecting the very same results) but guess what? ..... it worked perfectly. (Don't ask me why).

  • DVD tray sticks when ejecting

I'm having trouble with my DVD tray,
When ejecting it sticks on the slide down door. It tries twice to eject before going all the way back in. They only work around is to lower the door manually before ejecting. Even leaving a piece of card cut to size to force the door open if I'm using it a lot.
It seems to be fowling on the bottom of the DVD tray, is this a common problem with the g5 case?
I have the later DP 2Ghz, the one with just 4 RAM slots and no modem.

    Hi Craig,
Are you familiar with this page? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2580
You might want to try taking the optical drive out and seeing if something is caught. Maybe just taking it out and putting it back in again would help. Good luck.

  • DVD/CD sticks when sliding in/out.

Pretty simple here. The drive is working perfectly, no problem. Its a Combo drive DVD/CD-RW. MATSHITACD-RW CW-8121.
Burns, plays DVD's n' the like.
Problem: From what I gather, the construction of this drive includes sort of, felt elements that are stuck down to the top and bottom at the mouth of the drive in order to keep the DVD/CD from scratching and/or so it smoothly glides in and out of the drive.
These are pealing up—they have been for about a year or two (I've not used my drive because of this).
If/when I slip a CD/DVD in, the bottom part of the felt (because it's pealing up) is exposed and the sticky bottom rubs across the media leaving a large glue streak on it. Once it's in the drive, the drive doesn't recognize it because of this streak.
What to do? Replace the drive? Has anyone else experienced this?
    Thanks.

Hi, Daniel. Hardy could be right, but it depends on what color the felt in question is. If it's gray to match the Tibook's case, it's part of the case, not the drive — but I've never seen any report of that coming loose. If it's black, it's part of the drive. I've seen exactly the problem you describe in Combo drives before, involving the black fabric strips that line parts of the slot opening in the drive itself. In one case I simply removed the loose strip and the drive worked fine without it. In another, I removed a different strip (there were three different strips in all, in the drives I've seen) and the drive scratched some of the CDs that were inserted afterward; that drive had to be replaced.
I suspect that the problem occurs most often in drives that are used a lot, and spend a lot of time quite warm as a result. Heat may accelerate the breakdown of the adhesive. I haven't encountered the problem or seen it reported in a drive that was lightly used. I wouldn't advise trying to stick the strip back in place; after the adhesive has let go once, it's likely to do so again.

  • Mac Pro DVD drive door sticking problems...

    Hi all...
The aluminum drive door on one of my Mac Pro's 2 DVD drives sticks in the open ("down") position about 9 times out of 10 when in use. It has done this since I received it from Apple. Not a functional issue at all, so I didn't even think about sending it back at the time of arrival, thinking it might be just a bit stiff and "new"...
Now, over time, it has begun to get more annoying. I have tried everything in order to get it to work, sometimes seeming to have it fixed, but it ALWAYS returns to the "original state" of "stickiness"!!! Again, not a huge problem, but I'd like to get it seen about and figure out how to fix it once and for all. Anyone else having the same problem? I cannot take my Mac out of service, and this seems like such a simple thing...

Another poster fixed theirs by doing this…

  • Encoded dvd sticks at sane pint after burning

I am having this annoying problem with a wedding film we are producing. After exporting my qt file as prores I take the file into compressor and use the 90 min preset and create the DVD in DVD studio pro with chapter marks and menus at this point all is fine in simulation mode, it plays fine but when i burn a DVD it sticks at the same point every time. i have tried editing the film and taking out a section of footage bit it still sticks when i burn a dvd and play in my mac or on my tv!
Could it be in the audio track or something in the video timecode?
Note i: create DVDs every week like this same workflow with no problem and even burned the DVD on another mac but same problem

    Hi Allister
This may be stuff you have already tried but just in case ...you could try this if you have time.. trash (delete) all the project render files and do a full re-render .. then a new export as quicktime mov using current settings, I would then try it at each stage by burning it to DVD from inside Compressor and then if that works do all the DVD Pro fancy bits when I know it is working .. I say all this as once ..I had a sequence which stuck on any DVD player including the MAC, I had what I believe to be corrupt render files because when I trashed them and re-rendered it and created a new quickTime mov using current settings, it all worked fine ..

  • What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?

QuestionWhat can I do when if my laptop CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?
AnswerNote: For help with this issue in Windows 7, please see this article.
To get your CD or DVD drive working correctly, try these suggestions in the order listed.
    Reinstall the Driver
Hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left. In this menu, select "Device Manager." Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click the entry for the CD/DVD drive nested under "DVD/CD-ROM drives," then select "Uninstall." Finally, restart the computer. The computer will reinstall the drivers for the drive.
    Power Cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with some hardware problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Unplug all wires and peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery). If the model does not have a removable battery, check your user's guide to determine if you have a pinhole reset on the bottom. If you do, press this.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
    Reattach the battery if removed.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
Start the computer and test the drive
    Microsoft Fix-it
Your computer may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:
Your CD or DVD drive no longer appears in Windows
Your CD or DVD drive does not read or write and is shown as disabled
The media in your CD or DVD drive cannot be read
The media cannot be written to a CD or DVD inserted into the drive
You receive an error message about your CD or DVD drive
If any of these symptoms apply to your computer, use Microsoft Fix-it troubleshooter available here.
    System Restore
Try using System Restore to restore to the most restore point from before the problem arose.

  • Dvd behaves one way on computer, one way on dvd player

i've burned a recent project in dvdsp4. the menu page has only one button 'play'. when you hit play on the simulator the main feature plays back perfectly. if i take a burned dvd and stick it in a domestic dvd player it behaves the same way.
if i put the dvd into any of the macs here it's a little bit different. when i hit play on the remote (or hit enter) the menu page seems to linger and the picture only jumps to the feature after the audio has started.
i think i've explained this really badly. anyone else seen this?

i discovered something last night. i get this behaviour with video files that i've exported from fcp using compressor to make 90min best quality mpeg 2 with aiff and ac3 audio. looks great. now, if i export a plain dv 48k pal picture from fcp and let dvdsp do the encoding it don't get the lag running the video_ts folder from the dvd player. it's weird.
i'm going to try a few things today (ie leave out the ac3 files, lower quailty settings, etc) and see what happens. would you try the same?
    many thanks.
fwiw i actually really like dvdsp.

  • Burned CD/DVD no longer plays with PSE7

My father is a bit of a technophobe and he's been pulling his hair out for months trying to accomplish what he wants to do with his pictures. He has been using Elements since v4 (on my recommendation).
The Goal: Create an album, order the pictures, save to a CD/DVD/Memory stick for sharing as a slideshow on his HDTV.
The Solution: Once he has everything ordered as he wants it, rename all the files with a common basename (Elements adds the -001, -002 to keep them in order). Export the files to removable media.
The Problem: On the advice of Adobe technical support, he upgraded from PSE5 to PSE6 to help with some Vista compatibility issues. After literally weeks and about 30 out-of-order discs I discovered that PSE6 broke the renaming function by stripping the leading zeros, which throws off the ordering altogether. So now he's running a trial of PSE7, which fixes the leading zero issue and his memory stick into the HDTV works like magic. However none of the CDs or DVDs made with PSE7 can be read with his DVD player (the DVD player can display JPEG images). With the same DVD player, same brand of CD and DVD media, and same computer there was no problem reading discs created by PSE6. However upgrading to PSE7 now renders those discs unreadable. They work fine on the PC, just not the DVD player.
He's frustrated, and I'm pretty sore to be honest that he's dropping $100 a year just to keep up with bugs and compatibility problems. His use case hasn't changed since PSE4, he just keeps finding new bugs every time and support keeps convincing him to buy a new version.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why discs created with PSE7 using the "copy/move to removable disc" function would suddenly stop working in a commercial DVD player?
    Thanks,
    Peter

which DVD player you are using..
This is a strage problem. As far as I can understand your DVD-Player is not able to read CD/DVDs created through PSE.
You simply export the files using File>Export and burn using other standard burning softwares...
Were you able to play the CDs created through PSE6?

  • How to burn bought movies from iTunes to DVD's?

I am wondering if I buy a movie on iTunes could I burn it on a DVD to watch on my DVD player? Do I have to use iMovie?

The content owners are very strict on multi format copying of movies (unlike CDs)  If you want it on DVD you have to buy it again on DVD.  Of course you could just buy it on DVD and stick it in your computer -- except Apple seems to be phasing out including optical drives on its computers since you can, after all, buy the movie on the iTunes Store and if you want to see it on your TV you can also go out and buy an Apple TV so you play your Apple purchased movie on your Apple purchased Apple TV...
One thing to do is just get movies on DVD and check if there is a digital download option where you can also download a version for your computer.

  • Magnetic problem? iBook G4 Superdrive 12" has stuck DVD, screen quits dim

Please help me as I have had a lot of distress the past year about my aging iBook G4. After three years the Superdrive collapsed as it would not take media into the slot. I replaced the original Combo Drive immediately after purchasing the iBook in late 2004 with the said SuperDrive. Last fall I replaced the Superdrive after waiting a year with a new DL Superdrive. It has been working fine especially since I had a screen issue due to a strange voltage issue (my father bumped into the AC adapter, and the screen died and the iBook became unbootable) where I thought my iBook became fried though Apple Store found no trouble after some rest at the store my iBook miraculously worked again after they inspected it and removed the RAM I had added.
Now I am traveling, and after going through the x-ray security at LAX the computer had trouble booting and gave me a colorful lines screen before turning faint though not black. As if it were a kind of sleep- like a coma. This could be because I left media in the optical drive while leaving the iBook off?
Well, the problem has continued, and now I have a jammed DVD that stickes out about 3/4 of an inch. I am lucky to have a new MacBook, but I am getting antsy because I do not have easy wifi in my 3rd world locale, and I don't want the iBook to die - Apples are like children. Please help out with all the solutions possible because of my limited research time. I vagely remember having the colorful lavendar screen problem before, and I have heard of DVD jam problems (media stuck problems) before, but it's been a while, so I really forget what to do though I should in the future be more careful about using the slot-loading optical drive.

After doing the fix on this website: http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/ , and I have found out only two places in the USA do reball work on the logic board instead of replacing the whole board for about $50, the computer works again. I even had the flashing question mark discussed on the web page, so I had to take-apart and reassemble again. The computer worked on its own using the pressure method left of the trackpad occasionally from Sunday until Wednesday (today) though the computer collapsed again. Since the shim fix it boots and runs without the pressure method, and I used the exact size and kind of protector disc. I am going to keep an eye on it to see it through otherwise, it's going to a shop.

  • How do i get win 8.1. *pro* for mac parallels, deauthorizing win 8.1 pro and license rules for windows vms

ok, i've seen this question asked a number of times.  i know the general procedure:
    - first download some installer things to a window box so i can make a bootable DVD / flash drive
    - go the mac and use the DVD / usb stick to install the virtual machine
    great.. BUT :
    1) unfortunately, i'm still really confused at the  most basic part which is where (link) do i actually get the initial download thing to create the 8.1 *PRO* from microsoft and where (link) / how do i pay for the subscription key to install the thing????
i keep seeing a link for windows 8 or windows 8.1 where windows PRO is NEVER mentioned.  i ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE a) PRO 64 bit and NOT vanilla windows and b) it MUST BE A FULL INSTALL (i'm not upgrading from windows 7, 8 or 8.1 NON pro..  i'm going
to be installing this thing on a brand new system.
i'm an IT guy for two decades and i can tell you trying to find, download, install a clean version of windows 8.1 PRO is a royal pita and nothing about windows 8.1 PRO is intuitive on the MS site.  it's almost as if they do NOT want you to install the
thing.   i'm not trying to bust jewels here, i'm just being honest and providing feedback that you folks need to make this much more clear and intuitive.  people really shouldN'T have to post on forums to find out how to purchase, download and enter
in a subscription key for a base version of an OS.  it's crazy.
    2) once i can figure out how to download, install and register the darn thing ;)... i'm curious how the licensing works.
2a) first if my windows 8.1 pro experiment on mac parallels sucks, i want to be able to remove the authorization so i can reinstall 8.1 pro on another system.   can i / how do i do this in my scenario?
2b) i actually already bought windows pro 8.1 about a year ago (to upgrade a laptop that came with 8 that i needed to upgrade to vanilla 8.1 then to finally to pro) so that i could windows phone 8.1 development with simulator on the laptop.  unfortunately
the laptop maxed out at 4G and the performance of the emulator was ridiculously slow that it's unusable.  i'd love to somehow be able to put the laptop back to windows *vanilla* 8.1 and reclaim my 8.1 pro that i *already* purchased by removing the authorization
from that laptop allowing me to reinstall the full 8.1 pro with the same key on the mac with parallels.  then i can sell the laptop that has sat there collecting dust for a year and regain my windows 8.1 pro investment vs having to buy another copy for
    the mac.
i have no idea how to do this though i think it should be possible.  can anybody tell me where / how i do this?
note the win pro 8.1 install never went well so i actually had some guy from MS login to my laptop remotely and do the install.. in doing so i believe he wiped away the original windows vanilla 8.1 recovery partition asus put on the drive meaning i'm not
sure i can get the laptop back to 8.1  or 8 vanilla so i can resell it functionally to another person while removing my 8.1 *pro* license from it.   any suggestions here highly welcome.
2c)  once i get the windows 8.1 pro installed in a vm under parallels, i'll have one licensed copy running.  my guess is that is what i'm limited to.  but when you start working with VMs the whole purpose is to be able to create multiple test
enviornments and dispose of them when you don't need them etc.   since the window will be tied to the single mac hw id, will i be able to install multiple *win* vms (duping an exising win vm for instance) from the one license  or must i purchase
multiple win licenses for each win vm on the SAME system?   if you need a new license for each vm, wouldn't i have to do a FULL WINDOWS INSTALL every time i wanted to create another windows VM.. THAT IS CRAZILY INEFFICIENT...
there has to be some kind of option to dup a windows licensed vm on the SAME system yes?  what are the rules / procedures for making this work.
i'm using parallels on mac as an example but the same question would apply to using hyperV (which i know nothing about at this point) as the virtual host platform as well.
i'm open to well thought out links that actually answer these questions succinctly in addition to comments here
    thanks in advance

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • Optical Drive not being recognized by Macbook

I tried inserting a dvd into my Macbook today and it makes a clicking noise (something it used to do when it still played dvd videos), then it spits the dvd or music cd out. For a time it was not recognized in my system profiler, but I just checked it again and it was there, however, it still spits out the cd/dvd I stick in.
Also, when I try to open DVD Player it says, "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"
Any ideas? I'm up-to-date on my OS and drivers, to my knowledge.
