  • DVD Player won't play some DVDs

My DVD Player won't play certain DVDs. Presumably all commercial DVDs should be playable in the software. Fox discs are a problem. I can get Player to turn on, but after the menu, the screen flashes a reading error, from which it could not recover. Yesterday I tried to play a Paramount disc, and nothing happened. The computer didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the tray. A Wolfe Video wouldn't read at first (I got a dialogue box that the disc was blank) but I put it in again and that time it played.
Also, on a side note, I would like future editions of DVD Player to add the feature of allowing the viewer the ability to go backwards a frame at a time, as well as forwards.

    Hi, Doug.
This is starting to sound like a different problem. Your original report seemed to apply only to specific DVDs. Now it's with all DVDs. Before we get into how to reinstall DVD player, let's try a few other things that are more likely troublemakers with DVD Player.
    1. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    2. Reset DVD Player. Peform all of the following steps before attempting to launch DVD Player again:2.1. Trash the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder. This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.
2.2. Using Get Info, make sure you are the Owner and have Access of Read & Write on the following folders on your account:• Home > Library > Application Support.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player.
    • Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings. If not, correct the permissions accordingly using the Owner and Access pop-up menus in the Details sub-panel of the Ownership & Permissions panel of the folders' Get Info windows.
2.3. Trash the contents of your Home > Library > Application Support > DVD Player > Settings folder.3. If none of the above sorts it out, let's see what Console can tell us: After the problem occurs, make note of the time, then immediately check the ends of these Console logs for clues that may have been logged when the problem occurred.
    4. Note that none of the above rules out the possibility that your optical drive has become defective.4.1. Can you burn DVDs, e.g. even data DVDs from Finder?
4.2. See if the freeware VLC Media Player (nee VideoLan Client) can play the DVDs.Good luck!

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • DVD drive won't play

Edit: Apparently it's not possible to list the maker of my DVD drive without being bleeped. I have edited the subject title.
I have a Satellite A105-S4274 with a Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ-841S ATA drive. I've never used it for burning any media, only watching the occasional DVD. But now it won't play any DVD, nor will it play any music CDs. I've also tried using it to read CDs and DVDs I've burned on my desktop PC, but the drive won't read them, either.
The DVD drive is recognized in the Vista device manager, which says it's working properly. It also shows up on Windows Explorer. However, when I put a disk in the drive, the light on the drive flashes as normal, but then stays on and nothing happens. When I use Windows Explorer to attempt to look at what's on the disk, it shows nothing.
Is there any way to fix this problem? If not, what drive will work as a replacement?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It sounds like a drive failure.  Replacement drives are problematic since Toshiba doesn't publish a list of compatible drives and it can be tricky getting a replacement.  There have been cases where even the identical make and model drive fails to work because of firmware differences.  The easiest, but not the cheapest solution would be to buy a replacement from a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider.  Those usually run around $400.  You can also use Google and search the net for info.  www.sparepartswarehouse.com sells all manner of laptop parts and would be a good place to start.

  • DVD drive won't play brand new store bought DVDs - makes grinding noise

I just bought my iMac last September and it was going great until the last month or so. First it started making noises when I inserted a new DVD and was slow to start, but it still worked. Then it started taking longer and sometimes rejecting the disc once - I'd re-insert and it'd be fine. Later it started rejecting more than once before it would play and now it seems to have stopped altogether and generally won't play any DVDs. I do watch a lot of movies, but even with a little more than average use it still seems a bit ridiculous that the drive would die or burn out in less than one year, right?? Has anyone else had this issue and/or resolved this issue? I'm new to Macs and haven't had to call the service people before but have heard others say they've had issues with the store service - should I call AppleCare instead? Any suggestions/tips/help would be appreciated. Thx.

It happens. Just be lucky it's still under warranty and give Apple Care a call.

  • DVD videos won't play, although audio works?

since upgrading to 10.8.4, DVD videos, including rental movies, discussions from teaching sessions, and conversions from home movies won't play, although sound is audible. Video player is "App version 5500.38.2; Framework version 5.7.1. I have rarely used DVDs on the machinge, but did work fine in past. Any suggestions appreciated

What comes to mind is that the DVD player will only work with certain original Apple manufactured DVD drives.  (Licensing issue since Apple pays a license fee for the MPEG software on the DVD drive.)  Are you using the original built-in drive?  VLC doesn't care about the license but states that it is up to the user to insure proper licensing.  Look in About This Mac to see what information it has about the DVD drive.  Perhaps it is somehow sending the wrong information.
Can you view MPEG movies on the Apple site.  For example the movie trailers.

  • DVD-R Won't Play

I just switched to mac and love everything except for one thing. It won't play a DVD-R I created. It will play any other DVD. The DVD-R in question will play in any other DVD player, including my friend's Mac (running the same version of OS and DVD player).
I tried calling support and was on hold for 40 minutes before the line went dead.
    Help?

    welcome to macbook forum.
try to burn another one, for your dvd-r might be scratched and macbook is a bit picky on disk surface quality.
Also open system preference > cd & DVD > when you insert video dvd > open dvd player selected.
    Good Luck.

  • Ripped DVD's won't play

My G4 _*will play*_ commercially prepared Movie DVD's. But if I rip a movie (MacRipper) and save it on the hard drive, it won't play from the hard drive. A burned copy won't play either. I have no problem with any of this on My G5 IMac works and and or my Intel IMac. But not on the G4.
    Why is this?

Will the MacBook start up using the install DVD that came with it? To test this, shut down the computer, start it up again and hold down the Option key on the keyboard. Insert the install DVD. If everything is working correctly, you should see an image of the install disk come up (possibly after clicking a curly arrow shaped refresh button) and you can click on it and continue.
If the computer spits out the install disk, it would seem you have a hardware issue - probably the optical drive is bad and needs to be replaced. Contact Apple for service or carry it in to an Apple retail store (make an appointment first so you don't have a long wait at the Genius Bar) or to an Apple authorized service provider.
Assuming your niece's use of the MacBook has been normal (not putting anything that is not supposed to go in there into the optical drive, for instance) this should be covered under the MacBook's warranty.
    Best of luck.

  • Dvd burned won't play.. tried many methods of trouble shooting still nothin

I'm trying to burn some of my video work for an application for grad school. It is HD, but I exported to an mov. file threw it in dvd studio pro and when I build it's fine, and simulate it it works, when I burn it it work on my mac, but it won't play on anything else?? Not my xbox or dvd player? The menu is set correctly with buttons working/linking fine. When I open the "dvd" on my mac it has the video_ts folder in it. I burned two different kinds on a doual layer 8.5 gb - r and a 4 gb + r and still nothing? I have no idea whats wrong can anyone suggest any other trouble shooting/solving methods? thanks, I'm working against deadline for grad school so time is important.

You burned an HD DVD. This is a nearly defunct format that will only play on a Mac or Toshiba's discontinued HD DVD player.
You will need to start over.
Delete any folders that DVDSP may have created. They are of no use to you.
The material must be encoded as DVD (not HD DVD) m2v and ac3
When you start your project again in DVDSP, make sure you use a DVD (not HD DVD) template.
You will need to recreate all your buttons, links etc from scratch. There is no way to port an HD DVD project into a DVD project.
    Good luck,

  • Burned DVD-R won't play in domestic DVD player

Why a DVD-R i burn won't play in a common domestic DVD player, even the most recent and good quality ones ? Is there something else i should do before burning ?

How did you burn it? If you dragged the files to the dvd in finder and then hit burn it won't play in a dvd player, but if you used iDVD it should work.

  • My made DVD's won't play on bluray players

    Hello Guys
I have made some DVD's and they play fine on DVD players and Mac computers but won't play properly on a PC and won't play at all in a Bluray player.
    My workflow:
    SD Footage captured into FCP
Edited with correct sequence settings (matching the clips)
Exported using quicktime, current settings, self made movie
    Open quicktime movie with compressor
Drag on DVD 90 mins best and submit
Drop the two compressed files into DVDSP
Make a menu and burn to disc using default settings
    Verbatim -R Disc
The disc works beautifully on all DVD players and mac computers but it stutters and freezes on a PC (windows media player) and in a bluray player it just says 'no disc'
Any ideas why they won't work on the PC and in the bluray player?
    Any help would be fab?
    Cheers,
    Mich

    Hey
So I have been scouring these forums for similar problems and trying the suggestions and I have the answer woohoo, it was on this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3096117?start=0&tstart=0
When I was burning the disc it was saying ' a video_ts directory already exists and I was hitting reuse instead of delete and I hadn't assigned the build to the project folder it was set to default which meant it was saved in library/cache. So I deleted the stuff in the video_ts folder in cache and then went to burn the disc again, I saved the files to the project folder and I hit delete instead of reuse when the pop up box came up and now the DVD is playing in the bluray machine....Problem Solved.
I don't understand why this makes a difference and why the disc played on DVD and mac and not bluray before but by doing this it now works on everything YEY
    Thanks Apple Forums

  • Dvd Player Won't Play Copies Of Or Self-Made DVDS

Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz with 10.5.5, and DVD player 5.0.1. Dvd player will play commercial dvds, but not any that I or anyone else has made. The same ones will play in my Mac Pro with the same settings. I tried many, but the common denominator is that it will not play anything but commercial DVD's, when other computers and players will play the same disc. Wanted to check here before updating to 10.5.7. Any help is appreciated.

    I have been able to
    1. burn data and movie DVDs and CDs
    3. read CDs and DVDs rented from Netflix or Blockbuster, purchased DVDs,
    4. and read DVDs burned by a 2007 Quad G5 running the same OS!
But the DVDs I burn with the drive DO NOT WORK in the same drive. The DVDs I burn DO work on a different a 1999 mac laptop. And on a 2007 Quad G5. The drive can read discs burned by the Quad G5.
Also, when the DVD I burn finishes, and I'm prompted to "Mount" or "Eject" the finished disc, if I mount the disc, it works. It plays. The drive reads the disc. And if I choose "Eject" - if I re-insert the disc, the computer cannot read it and spits it out.
Why should it be able to burn but not read the discs it burns??

  • Burned dvd-r won't play in external players

I just upgraded from an iMac G5 to a Power Mac. I was using DVDSP on my iMac and never had any problems burning. I recently burned a small project from DVDSP onto the same exact DVD-R media that I've always used (Memorex) and went to play it on the same exact external DVD player that I've always used (Toshiba), and the DVD wouldn't play. I also tested it out on my friend's sony dvd player, and it also wouldn't play. It plays fine on my computer. I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best"). Out of curiosity, I also tried burning a dvd from iDVD, and that also wouldn't play on the external players. I then tried burning an audio CD from iTunes (again, using the same exact settings and same exact media and external CD player), and the CD wouldn't play, except on my computer. I even tried burning the CD at a lower speed (8x), but that made no difference.
I took it into the Apple store, and they replaced the optical drive. However, as I suspected, that did not solve the problem at all. So here I am having just "upgraded" to a Power Mac from a perfectly good iMac, and I have lost all functionality of these programs. I believe it is an issue with Tiger, since I did not have Tiger on my iMac. I did download the Pro Application Support 3.0 when I first got the power mac, which I thought was supposed to solve problems that people were having under Tiger.
I have also read people's entries here which suggest using Toast to burn with. Honestly, I don't see that as a solution, unless Apple starts including it with their systems. These programs (DVDSP, iDVD, iTunes) all have their own burn functions which are supposed to work. And they did work on my iMac, without fail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used the same exact settings that I did on my iMac (field order:bottom; two pass VBR; max bit rate of 8.2; "Best").
It sounds like you have some other issues going on since nothing is working properly it sounds like, usually first thing to check is that bit Rate which is high, but it sounds like nothing is working
Have you tried reparining permissions after the updates? Have you tried making a new user/account and see if that works? Which version of Tiger? Is this a new Power Mac or an older one (in other words is somehow the burner not rated for the media you are using? That one is a stretch....) How about RAM, any after market RAM (like buy a Mac get 512 Meg upgrade) sometimes that RAM is buggy and can cause issues, though never heard of this happening

  • DVD made won't play on a pc

I made the dvd and it works fine in my computer, my dvd player and one or 2 of the pc's at work.
The laptop at work I need to play it on says I don't have the correct codec to play the dvd in windows media player.
I paid 15$ to download a roxio plugin ( I guess that is what its called)
It loads my movie, with the beginning screen of the movie (the menu)
But when I try to play it it just goes to one of the photos that I used on the menu. (the drop zone photos)
Now I am REALLY under the gun, 6 days and counting.
Any and all help would be appreciated!
    thanks Laura

    Laura,
If it plays on your Mac and other DVD players, iDVD has done it's job.
At this point you have a PC problem. Not all PCs have decent DVD player software and the issue of non-playing of writable DVDs comes up from time to time.
You need to be sure you have the latest DVD player software on the PC. Good luck.

  • Latest dvd project won't play in DVD players...

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from files I make with exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always created DVDs that play in my computer and in DVD players.
For some reason, my latest project will only make DVDs that play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. I've checked to make sure I'm still set to NTSC, and I am. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting in FCP that I'm unaware of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've wasted a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

Haha. I would love the luxury to just stop and not worry about it but unforunately I need to burn the DVD. I do not have another burner, I only have my internal one built into the iMac G5 I have.
Plus if you read through, you'd see that I have successfully burned older DVD projects just fine this week. It's just this latest project that won't burn.
If you have any suggestions related to what I might have changed or what might be different in FCP, that would be helpful. Unfortunately just stopped after 10 bucks worth is not an option.
