DVD say Not permitted

I am trying to play a DVD on my MacBook Pro 10.9.5 and it says Not Permitted with a circle and line through it.  I got these DVDs burned at Costco from a video tape and have been able to play them in other devices.  Here is a a screenshot of the contents of the DVD.

This is the same person asking the question.  I have figured out that the DVD works fine on my computer, it is only when I connect it via Airplay to my TV with my Apple TV that i get the message it can't move the video to the screen.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

  • Why is my macbook DVD player no longer playing commercial DVD's that it used to play perfectly? It reads the disc, but then says not permitted when I hit play. It is much older than 12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix?

The macbook reads a disc, and opens up DVD player but then says not permitted when I hit play, or any other button. Sometimes the initial music plays, but the screen remains black and then it all stops. These are shop bought DVD's that have previously worked on here, and work in DVD players, but have suddenly stopped. The computer is much older than the12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix? Thankyou!

    Three things you can try:
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietory CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Perform an SMC reset:

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • All my dvd say not supported

When i try to watch a dvd they just say not supported and pop right back out. these are all good condition and not copys!
Anyone know why this could be?

    Hi Paul
    Is this ?
    • Bought commersial Movie DVDs
    • Home made Movie DVDs
    • DVDs made via DeskTop/Finder - dropping movies onto the DVD icon on desktop --> Burn (Data DVD)
If Your Mac do not play-back
    • Commersial Movie DVDs - Then I suggest Apple Store and a tech. take a look at it - sounds broken
    • Home made via iDVD or any Movie DVD authoring DVD program
    - Brand of DVD matters - Memorex, NoName and other Cheap brands usually do not work for Video-DVDs (Movie-DVDs) only as Data-DVDs
    - type of DVD used - DVD+/-RW usually creates all kinds of problems - DVD+R more modern format but plays bad on Older DVD-players - DVD-R (I use)
    - BURN SPEED - Very important and often a problem maker. BEST in iDVD is NOT BEST - I set this to x2 or x4 at MAX.
    • Data-DVDs (made by storing files on the DVD-icon on DeskTop)
    - Will Never play on any stand alone DVD-player ! Not ment to do that. Can only be played on a Computer with a program that can open the movie file e.g. QuickTime-Player or VLC as they opens and plays lot's of various Video Codecs (many many more than iMovie and iDVD can use)

  • Apple dvd player says dvd "not permitted"

I am using my new apple USB Superdrive for the first time on a new Macbook Pro with the Zumba dvd which was purchased in the US and the screen says "not permitted"

I second this. I bought a Mac Mini with the plan of using it as a media center attached to my television, and in the end never use it for video because the picture quality is so bad. I explored other software options... VLC player namely, and while it gave you more tweaking options, none of them made a real difference. Playback quality is just cruddy.
It is interesting, though, that HD material played fullscreen through quicktime player does look quite good and comparable to my HD Directv feed (though I guess that's not saying much...), whether its interlaced or progressive source.
Has anyone compared playback of the same material directly from DVD player vs. played through AppleTV?

  • "Not permitted" access to DVD menu once DVD starts playing --Mac DVD player

    Hi,
DVD works fine on standalone DVD player, but when played on an internal Mac DVD player, it won't allow me to stop the disc and go to the menu once it has started playing. It says "Not Permitted." I've tried a couple different macs.
I made my video in FCP5 with chapters and exported as MPEG2 via compressor to DSP 3.0.2. I need the chapters to work correctly on a Mac DVD player as it is an instructional video which will accompany all the Mac Media Carts that have been purchased for our school district -- it has to play correctly on the included laptops.
    Anyone have any ideas?

When you press STOP in the DVD Player, the DVD stops, no longer running. That's the reason that when you try to press MENU appears the Not Permited message: no way to go to the menu because the DVD is not playing.
That's the normal behaviour of the DVD Player. I think that's the way that thinks works in every DVD player . . . "I think".

  • Purchased DVD "NOT PERMITTED"?

DVD player works with other discs.  Tried to play new purchased dvd FROZEN. Player recognizes it as FROZEN but says NOT PERMITTED in all functions.  It works on my friends PC. Removed and reinstalled several times.  Played other purchased DVDs OK but not this one.

This is the same person asking the question.  I have figured out that the DVD works fine on my computer, it is only when I connect it via Airplay to my TV with my Apple TV that i get the message it can't move the video to the screen.

I am working with Acrobat XI and when I try to add text to a geopdf file I get a popup screen that says this is a secured document and editing is not permitted. How do I fix this?

I figured it out...needed to use comment tool set, not the editing tool set.

  • First Play "Not Permitted" on Apple DVD player

I have some duplicated DVD-Rs of a project, and the client ha reported a disutrbing error. I've been told that on several different Macs running OS 10.2 - 10.4, not only does the disc not auto launch DVD player and not auto-play the first play menu, but when the user presses play on the floating control, they get a "Not Permitted" message. The user reported that they were able to choose "open Video_TS" and navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc, at which point they were able to get the disc to play.
The disc include a significant amount of content on the ROM sector of the disc, including an autorun and an .exe file for windows users. However, I can't see how the presence of these ROM files could interfere with the operation of DVD Player and the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc.
Furthermore, the duplication master for this disc has been formatted directly from DVD studio as a standrd DVD volume - no Toast burn, hybrid volume formatting, anything like that.
Upon inspection I discovered that my authoring assistant had specified a pre-script on the first play menu. I try never to use pre-scripts for anything, as I have found the way DVD studio handles them to be unreliable. However, I suspect this pre-script on the first play menu as the culprit in this problematic behavior, and have removed it.
The problem consists in that I did not experience this problem with any of the DVD-R checkdiscs I burned from DVD studio, unti the discs were duplicated. We'll be doing a full-scale replication run as the next step. Since I am not able to reproduce this problem on discs I burn here, I'd like find a way to know I have fixed the problem.
My question is, has anyone else ever encountered issues with their first-play menu throwing up this "not permitted" condition in Apple DVD Player? Has anyone ever found a connection between this issue and pre-scripts, or between this issue and any ROM files?
I suspect that DVD studio's pre-scripts are "simulated" or translated through the abstratction layer of DVD studio in a way that allows them to be outside the DVD spec, or perhaps there are other ways DVD studio might be using the pre-command on a menu, such as when you specify a button selection for a menu, that use the menu pre-command, and override the pre-script you might have spcified for the menu.

I've seen it on replicated masters when a dvd-r master was used and not all regions were selected as ok to play. DSP doesn't 'check' region 7 by default... its best to use a region all project and .img files, not VIDEO_TS builds to the HD.
How were the discs duplicated though? That is probably the cause of the problem, not the pre-Script. Maybe a 'Data' disc was burnt and not a DVD-Video type option...

  • Error during Tiger install, disk utility (DVD) says could not unmount disk

OK, I'll start at the beginning. I was running 10.3.9 on my iMac G4. I hooked up a new firewire external HD. Transferred my iTunes music over, everything worked fine. Ran software update to make some updates (iTunes, Quicktime, Security Update, maybe another one) that I had been putting off because I had been out of space. That's when the problems began. It said I could not install updates, so I restarted. Then it hung up at Login Window starting. I did a few hard shutdowns (holding down power button) to try again, but was unsuccessful.
Read all the forums. Decided that I should have repaired permissions, etc. before installing the updates. So I started in single-user mode, ran FSCK, all that stuff, following the instructions very closely. Still kept hanging up at Login Window. So I started up from the Panther install disk, repaired permissions (made a bunch of repairs) and checked hard drive (said no repairs necessary). Restarted, still hung up at Login Window starting.
So I did an archive and install. There were errors near the end of the Panther install, and it said it could not finish. But the computer started up OK, and I was able to back up all my personal data onto the external HD.
So I decided to upgrade to Tiger, thinking that would fix everything. During the upgrade, it said there were errors installing files and to try again. Did so, same result. The computer did start up in Tiger, but clearly was not operating at full capacity (slow, some things didn't work).
So I decided to erase and install. Again, said there were errors and to try again. Did so twice, same result. Started up from the Tiger DVD and ran Disk Utility. When I clicked Repair Hard Drive, it said "could not unmount drive."
So now I am stuck. I have a wiped hard drive. Can't repair it, and can't get Tiger to install properly. Help!
(i do have an Apple store in town, but I haven't gone to the Genius Bar. Wasn't sure how that worked.)
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hmmm. And you're sure that when you select the main
hard drive entry in Disk Utility it shows a SMART
status report that says "Not supported"? That's
really odd because your model isn't too old to have a
    drive that doesn't support SMART.
Yep, looking at it right now. I've got the drive that says "38.2 GB ST3408..." selected, and it says "Not Supported."
By any chance would you have another external
Firewire drive on which you could install Tiger? If
you do, then you could try installing Tiger on that
drive. If you can then boot the iMac from the
external drive you could then try cloning the system
from the external drive to the internal drive.
I have the one external HD firewire drive. It has my backed up files on it. Could I still install Tiger on it without erasing those files?
You could do the same thing from another Mac if both
support Firewire. You could boot the iMac into Target Disk Mode while it's connected to
another Mac's Firewire port. You could then clone
from the other Mac to the iMac's hard drive that will
appear on the Desktop of the other Mac.
And I do have another Mac, which I am typing on right now. It's sitting right next to my "sick" iMac. If I recall correctly, it's an iMac DV special edition. It does have a firewire port and I think it has a DVD drive. It's running 9.0 currently.
You can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to do
the cloning. The process is as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the source or startup volume from the left
    side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the source or startup volume to the Source
    entry field.
    5. Select the destination or backup volume from the
leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry
    field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this
step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the
    Restore button.
So should I use the firewire external HD or the old iMac to do this? (Thanks so, so much for all this help, by the way. I really appreciate it. I love my iMac and want to save it! I have to go cook dinner right now, but I'll come back later to check your answer and try your suggestion.)

I have no idea what the cause is, but the first thing I would do is get in touch with Globe and find out if it is or is not a network or account configuration problem.  If the phone is working for other network related features, and not others, then the first area for trouble shooting would be the carrier and their network.

  • Siri says "I'm not permitted to do that for you." When I ask her to call someone

When I ask Siri to call someone she says "I'm not permitted to do that for you." Hard reboot doesn't help and I can't locate any settings that might affect this. Any ideas?

If you have update to the NEW iOS6 and the FaceTime feature is switched "OFF" Siri will NOT make external calls and will say " I'm not permitted to do that" So all you have to do is switch the FaceTime feature "ON" and leave it like that for you to be able to give a voice command to it perform the task of making calls.
GoTo: Settings > General > Restrictions > Flip FaceTime to “ON/OFF
