DVD Sharing

I go to my iMac and check DVD or CD sharing.  It is red because the firewall is on.  Of all the services that can be shared only the DVD is blocked by the firewall.  What is up with that?

scotth42,
CD/DVD Sharing does work with PCs, but you must have Apple's "CD/DVD Sharing for Windows" installed on the PC. At this time, this software is only available on the Software Restore disk that comes with the Macbook Air; it cannot be downloaded.
For now, we can only "share" optical drives from Macs that are themselves running 10.5.2 (unless, of course, we have a Macbook Air and the accompanying Software Restore disk).

  • How do I use DVD sharing using ethernet only?

    Hi All
I am trying to set up DVD sharing between my Home PC and macbook. My PC is running Windows 7 Pro x64. I want to use the DVD on the pc to run on my mac. The thing is I only have an Ethernet cable and am a complete noob when it comes to this kinda thing. Could someone please at least point me in the right direction, searches of google etc only show file sharing and I was told I need to make sure both computers are on the same network.

  • CD or DVD Sharing with new Mac Air on LION!

I was thinking that I would be able to put in audio CD I was going to be able to watch it.  If I put a cd I get the following error:  The operation can't be completed because the original item for "Audio CD" can't be found.
I also trie to play a DVD. With the DVD I am able to open the DVD and look into the files but it won't play the movie.
The Apple Genius stated that this is how the CD or DVD Sharing works.  It was not intended for you to you to play an audio cd from another computer or watch a DVD from another computer.
Do you guys agree with this?

Sorry it's not the answer you hoped for.

  • How can I screen share over ethernet?! Also DVD sharing?!

I contacted the complimentary apple 'support' to no avail. I just got a mac mini with lion 10.7.2. I have a macbook with snow leopard 10.6.8, both computers have just installed most recent updates. My goal is to get these two machines working in conjunction.
I have enabled screen sharing and it works, but very poorly. I have enabled DVD sharing, and it works poorly, very briefly if at all, before force quitting itself. I asked a gentleman in the apple store what was up with the lag, poor resolution etc. I experience with screen sharing and he said "it's the nature of the beat". He went on to suggest connecting them via Ethernet or another tangible connection. But how?!
I'm so frustrated I have called 'support' four times and not even progress has been made. Please help

Yes, that is an option and I appreciate the feedback.  However, I find Messages to be pretty useful for it's main purpose - bridging my iPhone messages with my MacBook - so I am hesitant to go back.
I tried looking into other options but Skype doesn't allow me to control the other person's screen and screen sharing, if I am understanding it correctly, seems tailored for people on the same network.
I tried setting up the VNC thing, but when I clicked the other users link it never connects.
Are there any options for people with different iCloud IDs on different Macs in different cities to connect for screen sharing assistance?

  • How to back up your mac with dvd-sharing?

i have a mac mini fall 2012 so i havent got any dvd drive, but my mac has it, i can dvd share, at least it says it can, but i cant see the empty disc that i want to make my backup on, i do not know how to back up my mac when i dont have a external dvd drive for my mac mini, and dont have a external harddisc.
pleas help me explain how to do it.
    mikkel

    Hello Mikel,
As far as I know CD/DVD Sharing is Read Only, you can't write to it remotely.
Also, DVDs for backup is not very good for most things, a cheap USB Hard Drive would be far better/faster.
You could, if need be, make Disk Images of what you want to backup on the Mini, then move the files to the other Mac for burning.

  • Upgrade to Tiger with DVD sharing?

    Hi,
My upgraded Digital Audio G4 (now 1GHz + 1Gig ram) is running Panther and has no DVD drive for the Tiger Install disks. I'd like to upgrade to Tiger. Is it possible to use DVD sharing on my new Snow Leopard iMac to do this? If not can I use an external DVD drive with USB or Firewire connection?
    Thanks,
    Frank

I don't know what DVD sharing is but Target Disk Mode should work. Use the new Mac as the DVD drive. Note, you will need to use black retail installer discs for this, not the gray computer-specific discs that came with another model computer.
[How to use FireWire target disk mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] includes description of hardware and software requirements.
[What to do if your Mac doesn't enter FireWire Target Disk Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75414], also read about [Open Firmware Password Protection|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/openfirmwarepassword.html] which can disable Target Disk Mode.

  • IMac bricked after enabling CD/DVD sharing in 10.5.2

After upgrading my aluminium 24" iMac to 10.5.2 I enabled CD/DVD-sharing just for the heck of it without getting round to trying it before trouble set in.
Later in the evening, apps started freezing for whatever reason and I decided to reboot. The iMac now hangs at the grey apple with a spinning gear below. Repeated restarts, resetting PRAM and power management make no difference.
Starting from the install DVD (c held down efter chime) has the same result: Acres of grey with apple and spinning gear. So no joy there.
Starting in target mode is possible - and amazingly, the install DVD still in the iMac turned up om my other computers' desktop
Running Disk Utility on the iMac's disk returns an error: "incorrect block count for file pcscd.pub (it should be 16 instead of 17)" which DU then claims to fix.
But no luck. Back to grey.
I can start the iMac in single user mode. fsck returns the same incorrect block count error and also claims to fix it, but after mounting / and exiting it loops and keeps returning an indecipherable (to me) error message. I'm away from the iMac right now, and I can't remember what it was ...
I have good backups so I'm quite prepared to wipe the **** thing and start over. But I can't get to do that: It doesn't see the install DVD, and with the iMac in target mode, the 10.5 installer (retail version) run from my other mac won't install on the iMac.
I'm guessing it's not a disk issue but some EPROM parameter connected with the CD/DVD-sharing that's the culprit.
    Any ideas?

You're quite right. And it would be in the spirit of the community and all do to just that and report back. But after finding that my backups - though complete - are not as well-ordered as I would have liked and at present being halfway through reestablishing a workable status quo, I'm no gonna bother . Sorry.
This way, I'll also know - if my iMac goes belly-up again - that the problem is probably caused by something else.
    /P
PS: I'm kicking myself for not thinking to try safe booting before doing the big wipe.

  • Sharing Settings (No CD/DVD Sharing Listed)

After fully reinstalling Mac OSX 10.10 Yosemite, I have been unable to locate the place where I can setup CD/DVD Sharing Settings that used to exist under System Preferences --> Sharing --> "CD/DVD Sharing".
How do I set this up now?

    It should be there
OS X Yosemite: Share your DVD drive
Do you have the optical drive connected/working on this Mac? The DVD/CD sharing only shows if an optical drive is connected/working. I just rried on mine.

  • HT5287 Problems installing DVD Sharing Software

Hi! I have an iMac and a Mac Book Aire. Y dowloaded in the iMac from the link above the software but when I'm going to install it a message tells me that it can be installed because is from an unknown source. How can I fix this??? Thanks!!!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You don't have to install any update to use Remote Disc with your Mac. You only have to install the DVD Sharing update if you are running Mac OS X 10.4.11, but your iMac is using OS X 10.8.2, so you don't need it. Follow the steps of the link to use Remote Disc with your computers

  • Trying to see DVD drive through DVD sharing. iMac does not see MacBook. DVD sharing is ON.

I have an iMac with a non-working DVD drive and I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from my MacBook's DVD drive. I have turned DVD Sharing ON but the iMac does not see the DVD drive in Finder's Shared Devices. I have tried FireWire, LAN through TimeCapsule and WiFi. Am I missing a step?
The iMac and MacBook are both late 2007 purchases and have 10.5.8.
    Thanks for any help.

Two commands you need to type in terminal on the computer that has the dead drive.
Disk sharing like the macbook air does is one of those things that's included in all OS X's on all computers, but that is not enabled.  (I think it's cause apple doesn't want to have to support it on more devices that they absolutely have to)
So here's how you enable it.
In your Utilities Folder, open Terminal
    copy and paste each line:
    sudo -s
    *type your password*
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true defaults write
    com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
    shutdown -r now
Okee dokee... That last command will restart your computer, then you're off to the races!

  • Restoring factory settings with cd/dvd sharing

Every time I try to restore it with cd/dvd sharing it doesn't work, the cd shows, I click it, and then it restarts but nothings different. Do you think if i got a superdrive it would be better?
I've called 4-6 times about this issue but my 90 days past already so im on here. Does anyone else have this problem. When i tried a store bought cd (music) the cd just ejects. I dowloaded all of the cd/dvd stuff on both computers and everything goes great until it restarts.

you need to use remote install , not disk sharing.

  • DVD Sharing issue between Leopard and Snow Leopard

Today started out pretty straight forward.. I was going to finally upgrade to Snow Leopard.  Turns out I have a bad optical drive (only reads CD's not DVD's). No problem... I will share the drive off my husbands laptop which is already running snow leopard.  Well 4 hours and a  whole lot of swearing later... it was still not working.  The drive would not mount under devices and it seemed no amount of coaxing would work.  I also was not getting the option of choosing a network after I rebooted with the option key (maybe that is MacBook Air only???) when I tried the remote install. I even went so far as to try to share the DVD drive of a windows vista system I have for work.
As a last ditch effort I threw the disk in an old PPC iMac also running 10.5.8 and Viola!!!!!! the disk appeared as it should and all seems to be well for an install. I post this for anyone else who finds themselves in this position... stop banging your head against a wall if the disk is not mounting with DVD/CD sharing. Try to find another leopard machine to use or use a different technique all together. (target disk mode, making an image on usb.. I've seen them, never tried them). Hopefully you won't lose hours tilting and windmills like I did.

    This solved my problem.
In Leopard in System Preferences I opened Security. In the Firewall tab I clicked on "Set access for specific services and applications"
Once I had File Sharing (AFP, SMB) added I was able to access my Macpro on my PowerBook G4.
