DVD size capped at 3.7GB??

I have two quicktime files, both created by running my 8mm-camcorder through my DV camcorder for capture:
File A: 1h23min, 12.85GB
File B: 1h44min, 17.81GB (same as File A + 21min footage)
I import each into separate iDVD projects with the same theme and create separate DVD images. My preferences are set on "Best Quality." I end up with:
File A: 3.72GB
File B: 3.74GB
20 megabytes difference for 5GB more footage??? I have gone over both images and verified that everything is present in both of them. I've gone over both visually with the zoom at 100% and on fullscreen and I can't visually tell any difference. I would take screenshots and zoom way in if I could, but the stupid DVD player disables screen shots.
I'm puzzled.
On a side-note, I'd really like to get something a bit more advanced than iDVD, so I could pick my compression level, but I'm not willing to shell out $500 for DVD Builder just for home videos. IS there anything between the two?

Hello,
The short answer is that iDVD used a lower average bit-rate for the second sequence. The higher the bit-rate the larger the file size and vice versa. iDVD will use a VBR (variable bit-rate) for sequences over 60 minutes.
On a side note you have something like BitVice:
http://www.innobits.se/
For encoding. Then you would need something like Toast to burn.

  • Automatic transcode settings can't close DVD image in standard 4,7gb size

So I have this feature film of a marriage 1h30m long that Encore refuses to generate an ISO of standard DVD size. The point is, for some reason this project in particular is generating a 6gb image, in the settings that even 2h10m fits standard DVD size. What am I doing wrong? What to do now?
    Encore 5.1

On an automatic transcode, Encore uses what you have already transcoded in the project plus menus, motion menus, etc, and uses settings to fit the rest on the disk. If you transcode some assets early, then others later, Encore will transcode the first ones at higher bitrates and not be able to go low enough to get the others to fit.
I have not tested whether this will actually result in too big for the disk, but I suspect it might.
You could look at the transcoded files in the Encore folders and check them with mediainfo or gspot for bitrate to see if they vary.

  • DVD Size- Please help

I am in a little bit of a panic right now. I am rendering a movie in IDVD that I brought over from Final Cut Express. It's about 52 minutes long and 11GB. I put in a DVD that's only 4.7GB. I didn't know this was the problem. I put it in last night before I went to bed and this morning I got an error. I am assuming this is why I received the error. I am really new to all of this. Are there blank DVD's that will accomodate this size file and will they work with a MAC? Please help. I have to have this done by noon today.
    Thank-you so much.

size doesn't matter in iDVD.. only length.. any under 120min is ok.
    recommendations:
in iDVD: don't just 'burn', but select 'create image'.
in FCE: don't 'manually' convert into something by choosing 'Export/Quicktime Conversion', just 'Export/Quicktime Movie' - drag that into iDVD.
be sure, FCE project and iDVD project fit the same framerate/standard (25/29.97fps)
don't 'overwhelm' iDVD's dropzones with 'hours' of content.. those dropzones are meant to fit a few seconds (minute) of material..
be sure, your projects contain 'any' audio (even an audio-track of 'nothing' is audio.. but no 'empty' audio track in iDVD please).
when image is created, launch apps/Utilities/DiskUtility to 'copy' disk image onto a 'real' DVD.. choose Verbatim or Toyo Yuden -r ... burn speed 2-4x .

  • How do I organize photos in DVD size folders, by topic, by date, etc?  I plan to set up a new archive on an external hard drive (1 TB) for about 7500 photos.  Some from a series of XP files, the rest from iPhoto.  I use iPhoto11 on Lion with a 2011 MacBoo

I need to know several answers, and I don't feel I can do it without the basic folder system.  Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.  How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?  I have been using computers for 20+ years for photos, and have scanned some on Windows and transferred some but not all that I wish to archive in new compositions, albums, whatever that are not all on iPhoto.  i also am concerned about overflowing my capacity on MacBook Pro 2011.  Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.  Is this my only option?  I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

  • Help with transcoding and DVD size

Hello!  I'm a total newbie when it comes to this stuff (encore/premiere, video editing, DVD making, etc...) so it has been quite a curve so far for me.
I am stuck in one point now, however.
Basically, I have 8 hours of video (low quality informational videos, internet download stuff--all .mp4) that take up 1.7gb on the hard drive.  I've burned them all to a simple content DVD, but I felt that I should add menu's to make it more professional looking and user friendly, and thus I was recommended encore.
So I played around and made some menus, submenus and added about 10 of the videos and noticed the project size was already a whopping 8gb.  I then just imported every video to see the size, and it wound up being 17.9gb!!
My question is...am I being unrealistic expecting to have my videos, that only took up 1.7gb on a DVD with menus, or is there just a combination of settings I'm missing so it encodes it to fit on a regular 4.7gb DVD?
    Thanks!!

You can also try to make a FLASH enco
    ding using encore.
It will provide the application player too, and you can authoring your project using Encore.
Usually flash video is very small in files dimensions and you can probably get your goal.
    Hope this can help you.

  • Used utilities to burn dvd but its too big 5.5gb and dvd-r is only 4.7gb

this is all new to me so bear with me! ( and i thought macs were idiot proof!
have burnt dvd using utilities it was 5.5gb but the disc i want to burn to is only dvd-r @4.7gb how do i get it onto a dvd to play on my tv/dvd player, (do i need to get a double sided dvd-r, will that help?)

At least three options i see here:
    1. Roxio Toast fit to disc or
    2. Try an alternate DL DVD-R media like:
    3. or break your project into 2 separate iDvd projects and use the above. (do not confuse the above media with DL which is entirely different media).

  • Maximum DVD size?

Just learning with this product so please bear with me.
This was just an experiment not with production media so no worries if it baulks! Anyway - I was tying to see if DVD Studio would compress 4 hrs of video onto one SL-DVD.
The projected was created/encoded successfully - estimated size 10.2gb. I was hoping the build process would shrink the DVD to 4.3gb but this never happened despite me setting the project as single layer.
Does DVD SPro compress in this instance or have I got it wrong!?
    Steve

As mark and David have said, DVDSP is not going to calculate the encode rate for you... it works from the basis that you know what settings to use and it applies the ones you give it in the application's preferences.
You really should follow the references to bit budgets... to know how much to compress the material will depend on a combination of factors.
I would suggest that you also consider using an encoder which can work at half D1, or encode to MPEG1 if you need to fit this material on a single layer DVD-R...

  • Idvd dvd size help

    Hi
I'm trying to burn a movie on idvd but it is 4.5 gb
I have a 4.7 gb disc in but i dvd says it is only 4.2 gb
can't see how to change it

The limiting factor for iDVD is the total length in time of the movie, not its size. iDVD will compress it to fit if the movie is under 2 hours including iDVD menu content. You don't have to do any compression yourself. Many of my iMovies are between 25 and 65 GB, and they all fit onto a single layer DVD because they were under 2 hours.
Are you using iMovie? Which version?

  • Is There An ACCURATE Way Of Estimating A DVDs Size?

Yesterday I had to put an FCP project of just under 3 hours on a DVD. I exported it to Compressor and because of its excessive length made my own preset.
This was using a CBR of 2 Mbps which the "guide" said was OK for up to 174 minutes.
So I thought it would just squeeze on nicely.
I was therefore surprised to discover (after nearly 3 hours!) that the encoded file was less than 2.8 GBs so I probably could have encoded at 3 Mbps and had a better quality DVD.
Needless to say I didn't have time to redo it.
Any ideas how I can choose the highest possible bitrate in future without overdoing it and running out of space?

Some time ago I used Mr Bitbudget. It is no longer supported, and may not even run on some systems, but it is a lovely little bitrate calculator that runs locally as opposed to being online. I kept a copy of it here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/halgernon/.Public/Utilities%2C%20apps/mrbitbudget0.5bX.s it
It was shareware, I believe, or even freeware, but it was nearly 5 years ago when I first found it.

  • File Size capped at 32bit for File System Data soruce?

I have a report that uses the "File System Data" source. I am using it to find files older then 30 days of type BAK or TRAN. That all works well but the "File Size" field does not display the correct information. For example I have a file that is 191GB or 205,192,528,384 Bytes, but the report displays it as 4,294,967,295 this corresponds with the max for a 32bit INT. Can anyone confirm that this is a limitation of the driver? Is there are 64bit CRDB_FILESYSTEM.DLL?

    Hi Thomas
What version of CR are you using? Please look for the version in the Help | About screen of the designer.

  • Export from HDV to Web-Plausible Wide-Screen DVD Size?

I'd like to let some friends view some video I've shot in HDV (1440x1080i anamorphic wide-screen, camcorder is Sony HDR-FX1) and am editing with Final Cut Pro HD 5.0.4. I'd therefore like to export this video into a web-usable format, preferably at DVD resolution. Since this is wide-screen video, that works out to 853x480.
I'm at a lack to find an export format that can do that. Almost every pre-defined export format produces a 4:3 anamorphic print. When I use "Custom..." to explicitly ask for 853x480, it changes those settings to 848x477, but the final video comes out as 1131x477 (i.e., 16:9 x 4:3).
Anybody have any ideas how to do this? Thanks everybody!

Aha! The trick appears to be to set "Pixel Aspect Ratio" to "square" in the "Custom..." dialog. Apparently the fact that it was still set for anamorphic caused my 848x477 attempt come out to 1131x477.
By the way, I don't think HDV (or at least my HDR-FX1, which says it's HDV) has square pixels. Its images are 1440x1080 resolution, which is a 4:3 ratio, but it produces a 16:9 image, so it's got to be anamorphic.

  • DVD size curiosity

    Hi all,
So I've scoured google and searched these forums and I can't find the answer to this question that's been bothering me for a few days.
A store-bought DVD from a Hollywood movie studio, after ripping and in Disk Utility, is usually about 7 GB big. I know the disks are not DL and a standard DVD is 4.2 ish...
I understand the concept of compression - I was mad when I discovered iDVD couldn't do it for a 2.5 hour movie, but I went out and bought Toast 9 and I love it. (The battle between Toast and Popcorn was confusing to figure out too...)
So it's not really a big deal, but if Hollywood compresses a 2.5 hour movie to fit on a standard 4.7 GB DVD, why does the computer say it's 7 GB? Does the computer "uncompress" it?
Thanks in advance, I'm curious, google was worthless, so who better to turn to than the apple discussion forums?

    Hi Mike,
Yup, they do exist. I own an older JVC set top DVD player that will not read dual layer media at all. And I paid top dollar for this deck years back. However a newer and much cheaper Daewoo (under $70) has no issues playing this same media. Don't ask me why..... much newer technology I'm guessing.
Same holds true of some older apple mac computers. You'll be very hard pressed to get a pismo laptop (year 2000 firewire model) to play dual layer media since the stock DVD-rom drive gets best results with SL only that does not exceed 4x.
I have one older Pioneer 103 S-Drive that works very well with SL media as well but refuses to mount DL media which simply sits in the drive and spins at first start.
On the other hand I also have a newer Pioneer 110U DL Burner connected to the same mac via FW in an ext. FW enclosure and it works great with any type of media I throw at it (except for Blueray).

  • DVD "size limit"

    Hi folks,
I own a 1.25 Ghz eMac that has done me good service for years. I'm lately experiencing a weird problem with the Superdrive. Although I'm using, not only the same DVD brand, but even the same opened package, of 4.7 gig DVDs, it only recognizes a capacity of 4.28 gigs.
    Any suggestions?

What you're seeing is normal. This is caused by a difference in how different entities define a 'GB'. All drive and media manufacturers quote capacity using 1,000 bytes per kilobyte while other entities, particularly in computer operating systems, use 1024 bytes per kilobyte (there's a new term that has been proposed for the 1024 usage to clear up the confusion, but no one uses it).
    * 1,000,000,000 = 1,000x1,000x1,000 is used by hard drive and media manufacturers.
    * 1,073,741,824 = 1,024x1,024x1,024 is used by the Finder and Apple's utilities.
    Doing the math:
    4.7 x 1,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 4.377 'GB'
Including formatting overhead, a DVD-R (or DVD+R) will indeed have an effective capacity of about 4.2 to 4.3 GB. For further information, see Knowledge base article #30065, which applies to any data storage medium.

  • Audio in Menus and DVD file Sizes

    Hi
I'm remaking a DVD from scratch, from a DVD which was made in a different DVD authoring program. The DVD size of the original is 1.9Gb. They had 10 audio tracks each in their own menus. The audio tracks played in full.
Now when I add an audio track to a DVD Studio Pro, standard menu I set the duration of the menu to the length of the Audio track. This results in the menu size increasing which then takes my DVD well over the 4.7Gb file size once all the tracks are entered the same way.
Is there any other way of having audio in a menu, that doesn't take up so much room? It seems crazy considering the audio files are 4-8Mbs. I guess it's having to render the video as well.
    Thanks
    Dave Motion

Is there any other way of having audio in a menu, that doesn't take up so much room?
Yes. Use Compressor to encode your audios to Dolby 2 (AC3). Take any of the existing AC3 preset in Compressor and change the following settings to keep your audio level:
    Encoding Preset: None
    Dialog Normalization: -31
    Hope that helps !

  • 2 hour project on 120min/4.7gb DVD

I have a two hour long project on FCP that I need to burn on one dvd that is 120min/4.7gb. I need to use compressor in order to achieve this. Can someone direct me to the process? Thank You

In FCP, go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie. You can choose to make the movie self-contained, or just a reference movie, but do NOT check the option to "Recompress All Frames." Include DVD Studio Pro markers if needed.
Add the resulting file in Compressor. From the list of presets, choose the DVD preset appropriate for your program's duration. Each preset folder will contain a preset for AC3 audio and MPEG-2 video. If needed, you can duplicate a preset then modify it to suit your needs. Once you've chosen the DVD preset and a destination, submit the job. When it is finished, you'll have two files; .ac3 audio and .m2v video.
Import the two files into DVD Studio Pro for authoring and burning.
