After installing my new x-fi ex_music, i have found that my LG DVD rw spins continuously whenever a cd/dvd is in the dri've! It gets pretty hot too! i googled it and it seems it is something to do with this x-fi card, Any ideas? p.s. The crackling's a joke right!
now you mention this, i'd recently noticed my dvd dri've (on an internal IDE connector) spinning for long periods.
thinking about it, i've recently moved the x-fi to another pci slot to stop it sharing an IRQ resource (as i was experiencing weirdness while playing BF2 which would result in my HD going into a spasm after 2-3 rounds... Since changing from nforce4 sata controller to the 2ndary Silicon Image SATA this problem has gone away!)...anyway, since changing sata controllers and pci slot, the overspinning has stopped, as has the hard dri've weirdness. The two are most likely connected and i suspect it has something to do with the Nforce4/X-Fi compatability issues (or non issues, if you are creative!)

Time Machine Disk spinning all the time?
Day 3 of my TC. Love it, so far. Curious, though...my disk seems to be spinning all the time. Is this normal? Even when computer is in sleep?
Mine is warm-hot to the touch. I can leave my hand on it without discomfort. A RadioShack IR thermometer measures the warmest point on the top at 120 degrees. There is a fan inside which is on at all times. The fan is fairly quiet. I can only hear it when my Mac is shut down. (A dual G5 is CLEARLY louder than the Time Capsule...) The hard drive goes to sleep quickly. If I try to access the hard drive, I can barely hear it spinning up to speed. There's about a 5-10 second delay before the finder window opens. I assume this is how it is supposed to be? Does anyone know how the Time Capsule is supposed to behave? There aren't really any references yet... The genius at my local Apple store just started using one and doesn't yet have an understanding of its normal behavior.

It's not booting uplike it should. Its very slow. Rainbow wheel spinning all the time. Augh!
Make sure you have a backup. You should always have a backup and especially when your Mac is ailing.

Look in the Applications/Utilities folder and run Disk Utility. Click on the upper left disk icon. Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”? If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced. Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk. If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk. If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.
Try booting in Safe Mode (Boot and hold down the Shift key.) It should take longer to boot and shutdown. Once it is booted is it more responsive?

Choosing an external DVD burner all the time instead of the built in burner
I have the Superdrive but prefer to use the external DVD burner to save wear and tear on the Superdrive. When I pop in a blank DVD to burn, the drop down menu appears and I have to manually click on the external DVD burner. Is there something in the system preferences that I can click so that the external burner shows up and not the Super drive?
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once that is done you can import directly into the iPhoto library on the external HD. -
New - Macbook Pro - Running slow, beach ball spinning all the time
I've had my Macbook pro about 3 weeks and the beach ball is constantly spinning and I'm constantly having to force quit programs. Between Mail, Safari, and Aperture. Any ideas?
RobinONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
The reset the SMU:
Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings. -
Mac Mini runs SOOO SLOW. Wheel of Death spins all the time. Should I reload all the software?
I own four Macs, which includes three laptops and a Mac Mini. One laptop uses Mavericks, the other two laptops are Lions. They ALL work GREAT at a quick speed. The Mini, on the same wireless, runs soooo much slower, I wonder if there's a virus on it. The wheel of death is constantly spinning every time I click anywhere, i.e. Opening a new program, new file, or surfing the net. SOMETIMES FOR 30 SECONDS +. Nothing is quick. I took it to the Apple store, and they said there's plenty of space on it. It's OS X Lion 10.7.5. 11 G63. I noticed if I shut it down and restart it, it works better with less tabs open in Google Chrome.
I really don't know anything about computers. I have Word and Excel loaded on it. Should I delete the hard drive and start all over? Could there be a virus on it? I don't know where the software is for the Microsoft product... If I wrote down the serial numbers of Word and Excel, is that enough to reload it?

Chance of a virus is slim, macs are quite good at taking care of themselves, and most anti-virus software will slow down your computer and not really protect you at all, so stay away from that stuff.

Nothing works my beachball is spinning all the time
I have a MacBook Pro and upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago. The first week was a learning process but it has been impossible since then. Literally every task I try to do I have the beachball spinning, SAFARI, GOOGLE, BOOKMARKS, WORD, EXCEL, ITUNES, ALL OF THEM. I wait FOR several to many minutes for something to open and then the beachball appears again and I cannot even type my entry for another minute or two. My computer is basically unusable.
If we are all having this problem, who won't have this problem with Yosemite? Is Apple trying to crash the world? I have been glad to read on many posts in other strings that many of you have more ram than I do (4) as it has been suggested to me by Apple that I buy more ram - but obviously that does no good.
In describing Yosemite problems many posts only mention "MAIL," and recommend disabling various parts of it. BUT I don't even use apple/google mail so I don't even have the icon referred to on my Activity Monitor. (I am using Entourage)Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

if you can not use your optical drive , try use fsck comand line
boot in single user mode first by CMD and S key hold togather at start up

Should a macbook drive spin all the time?
I just replaced my 120gb with a 750gb, and it never stops spinning. It seems to use a lot more battery life too, becsues of the constent spinning I assume.
Its a samsung sata 5400rpm.I do have the preferences for the hard drive to stop after 10 minutes of not reading/writing. With the original drive that came with the macbook I could tell when it spun down. There was a definate stop in vibration, like if you closed the lid and it went to sleep. Now, the vibration continues even when I have not loaded any new doc, web page, email, etc for 10 + min. I know it is not the fan either. Thats kicks on sometimes with streaming video, etc.
It has also been a couple of weeks since I set up the new drive, which should be plenty of time for spotlight to have indexed. I only have around 90gb on this 750gb drive. -

Having the exact same issue. Also, on right click, many apps freeze/beachball and must force close. Additionally, uTorrent and Transmission are not operating correctly-uTorrent constantly beachballing and unresponsive. Right-click freezes with everything from Word to iMovie. Takes way too much time to do anything, and lots of cursor freezing, here is a sys log excerpt:

disk2s1 (disk2s1) <not mounted>: 209.7 MBI'm having the same issue - started a few months ago and had to forcibly shut down the Mac. That killed the hard drive, so I got a new hard drive and had the Apple Store install Lion on it, then used Migration Assistant to bring files over. Since then I've upgraded to Mountain Lion and have been experiencing lots of beach balls, freezes, etc. They're so bad that I've had to forcibly shut down 3 times, and each time can't restart. Just get the spinning ball all the time in FCP
When I use Final Cut Pro (newest update) I get the spinning ball all the time when I do ordinary things like dobbleclicking a videoclip (DVCpro HD) or a sequence.
If I try to force quit FCP it seems like it quits, the report problem to Apple screen appears, but I have to force shutdown the whole computer, because even after I have force quit FCP, it still appears like it is running in the dock, and I am not able to start it again before I have restartet the computer.
I had this problem earlier, so yesterday I formated and reinstalled the whole system, but the problem continues. Its quite frustrating that I cant use Final Cut Pro on my new MacBook pro, 2,4GHZ, 4GB ram.Mac Spinning Wheel https://forums.adobe.com/message/5470608

G50-70: empty DVD-drive clicking and freezing other drives for about 30 seconds all the time
Hello board. Big problem. Seem to be the only one having this after searching the board:
Brand new G50-70: When using OS from the SSD or using OS from the SSD and doing things with a USB-drive, the empty internal DVD-drive making clicking sound and sometimes freezing SSD read/write operation for about 30 seconds but all the time freezing USB-storage read/write operation for about 30 seconds.
When freezing there's always clicking. But when clicking there's not always freezing except when using USB-storage.
OS is Win81-64.
An example scenario: connect USB stick, open terminal, type diskpart, dvd-drive clicks and freezes opening of diskpart for about 30 seconds, then the same may or may not happen when entering commands like clear the stick and format the stick.
Any clues, why I have this issue? Thank you very much for reading.

it's possible that there's a software running on startup that's accessing the ODD when the machine is being used (especially if the ODD LED blinks when it's being accessed)..
To check, you can perform a clean boot to temporarily disable apps & services running on startup. If the machine functions properly on a clean boot, you will need to enable the startup services/programs that you have disabled in groups of two or three (trial and error) to find the culprit. You can start by enabling the lenovo services and apps first followed by the Intel ones and observe.
In addition, you can also try to disable the DVD-drive under device manager and observe.

I work in photoshop, on pretty huge files. about 4 GB, the maximum it can take. I have 8 gb of ram (although I know CS2 can only take advantage of 3 something GB). The thing is that my computer is getting slower and slower, and I get that spinning rainbow ball ALL THE TIME. It's driving me crazy. It's come to a point now that when I start up the computer, photoshop won't even open a file. It will just spin that rainbow ball and when I go "force quit" it says "photoshop (not responding)" I restart a couple of times and then finally I get it to work.
What's a good FREE utility to download that can check for file errors? I haven't run any sort of check on my computer ever.

There is a good utility called YASU which can be used to rotate log files and clean caches. I have never used it to clear caches as that is a troubleshooting step and not needed for routine maintenance. You might want to read about basic maintenance here:
