DVD splits on playback.

Hello
I am burning a 4.7 12cm PAL disk in region 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 8. I am using pro to compression the quicktime file to an m2v and aiff format. I have the bit rate set automatically at 4.0 mbps with a max bit rate of 7.0. The length of the video is only 02:05:19 (msf). I have successfully used these settings to burn disks which work from this burner but too frequently a disk will not playback on dvd players. Copyright management in unticked. They will playback in the mac’s own drive. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hi
Thanks for the links. I will try the audio change and see if that helps. The main problem is that when the disk loads the screen is split in two horizontally. The disk will play like this but I can find no explanation why it will play fine with some disks and not others. I am using good quality disks but this hasnn't solved the problem. I wondered if it might be a problem with the lead-in or lead-out data. Very strange that it will effect one disk and then burn one fine. The split playback happens on multiple stand alone dvd machines but not on the mac's own drive. The audio plays without any problems. I will keep checking all the threads to see if I can find a solution. Thanks.

How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

Nothing technical has been discussed. It is blocked because of licensing/copy protection.
I have to buy another DVD player?
The Apple TV is not a DVD player. So if you do not already own a player, then yes you will have to purchase one to view them on your TV.

  • I have a brand new iMac that does not have iDVD. Made a move on iMovie installed a 3rd party burn prog. but DVD won't playback on my regular dvd player. Need to burn one that will. Help!

My new iMac did not come with iDVD as they are not using iDVD any longer.  I made a movie that I needed to put on a DVD that would play on any external DVD player. After calling Apple twice, they recommened a 3rd party program so I downloaded "Burn-osx" and made the DVD; however when i insert it into my player connected to the TV it gives the message "disk error --playback feature may not be available on this disk".  Ok--now what?  I am up against a time line here--need the DVD for a graduation party! Help! What am I not doing correctly?

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie. Get iDVD.

  • Burnt DVDs stutter on playback

    hi,
i have a imac g5 with 250gb drive. About a year ago i converted a bunch of DV video tapes to dvd and had no problem. Now im doing another batch. My finished discs keep having trouble with stuttering on playback. Its mostly just the first half of the disc. The second half seems fine.
I have made several attempts. I thought at first it was because i was burning IDVD in the background and other usage on the computer was messing it up. So i did it again and left it in the foreground with nothing else going on. I quit all other apps. still no good.
Do i need special requirements to do this? like a certain amount of free hard drive? I hav 24gb left, but i can throw a bunch of stuff away and get over 100+ available if needed.
Is it because i have third party video playback plugs for playing videos off the web? Or is my quicktime version wrong, etc.? these are reaches, but i wonder if something like this would mess me up. I dont think so because the problem seems to only be in the first half of the dvd so it seems like a burning issue.
    any thoughts?
    jeff

I could be wrong, but I don't think that any of the possible causes that you mentioned apply here. Among the causes that I think could possibly apply are a dirty or defective burner, too fast a burn speed, a DVD media problem, or possibly some problem with your DVD player.
Try to save your iDVD project as a disk image (an option under the File menu. Then play it on your Mac's DVD app. If it plays fine, then burn a DVD using the Disk Utility app on your Mac. Burn at 4x speed or less, and use a good quality DVD-R media like HP, Verbatim, Fuji. Also, you might try playing your DVD on a different DVD player to see if it is the player that is the problem.
You didn't mention whether you were using PAL or NTSC formats, whether the project played OK on iDVD playback, or whether your playback was on a consumer DVD or your Mac DVD player, or whether you were using DVD-R or DVD+R.
Good luck with this. Hopefully some others in this forum will have some suggestions as well.

  • DVD and SWF playback

My client wants to play DVD and swf animations
    simultaneously.
Has anyone done this and if so, what performance issues can I
    expect ????
Minimum spec, anything would be good.
Would be nice just to tell him NO !

At least, the minimum system requirement will have to be
    raised to
accomodate simultanious playback, setting a short test demo
    might be the
most definitive way to prove unfeasability.

  • Adding transitions on newly created dvd freezes at playback

I've done this numerous times and only now it freezes at playback on other dvd players.  I assume it's the transitions because when I removed transitions it played all the way through without problems. To create a dvdI download video clips from iMovie, still photos from iPhoto, create titles, add transitions, add music then share to iDvd without rendering.  I found that when I render the photos become pixelated.  I've used this same procedure many times and only now the created product freezes after a few minutes.  This is done on an iMac, OS 10.4.11.
Thank you for any advice you may have!

I assume you are putting everything together in iDVD as an iDVD slideshow.
The transitions in iDVD slideshows frequently cause issues  - some of them work better than others - but the basic issue is images in iDVD created slideshows are consider to be Chapters, and some set top DVD players will pause/freeze at such chapter changes.
Your best bet is to put your presentation together as a movie using iMovie.  I personally prefer the commercial application FotoMagico Pro from Boinx, and others like Photo to Movie.

  • Fit 4+gig file on DVD - split it?

    Hi all,
I need to fir a 4.2 gig file onto a DVD in such a way that it can be accessed from Windows XP (so no Linux-filesystem-on-DVD methods).
Does anyone know of a way to do this without splitting the file?
If not, what's the best recommended way to split a file for recombination in XP, preferably with GUI FOSS or software built into XP.
    Thanks a lot,
    ~B

ISO9660/Joilet, the filesystem that mkisofs uses, has a 2GB file size limit (or 4GB, for the dev version).
The UDF filesystem has a much larger limit, but the UDF implementation in mkisofs/growisofs won't accept files larger than 2GB (or 4GB for dev ver???)
However, growisofs can burn a premastered UDF disc image to DVD.
So, I need to create a UDF image.
    Taken from http://www.lemoncube.com/412.html
    dd if=/dev/zero of=image2.udf bs=64k seek=71715 count=1
    losetup /dev/loop0 image2.udf
    mkudffs --media-type=dvd /dev/loop0
    mount -t udf /dev/loop0 /mnt
    cp backup_bigger_than_2gb.tar.gz /mnt
    umount /mnt
    losetup -d /dev/loop0
    growisofs -Z /dev/hdd=image2.udf
BUT, When I try to copy the file to the new loop device, it bails out at 1GB with a "File size exceeded" error.
Turns out that, as of recently (around kernel version 2.6.8) , UDF in Linux is unable to handle files larger than 1GB.
    See: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … 1b539fea44
    And: http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-secu … 33301.html
In this last post, does anyone know what Omer meant about using strip to work around the problem?

  • Why are my finished DVDs pausing during playback?

I kind of fell into producing a Dance Recital DVD when my videographer failed to show.  I recorded all footage first then started to play with Pr CS3.  I mixed all dances (recorded on 2 cams) seperately and exported them from Pr as AVIs.  I ended up with 39 seperate movie files which I then manually added to an En CS4 project on a seperate computer.  I added all 39 files as assets into 1 timeline and used the "export to chapter list" feature to make 40 seperate chapters (39 dances + a full show chapter).  I kept the menus as simple as possable with no motion or video.  Due to the total length of the video 2:14:07 I went with DL DVDs.  When I use the preview function everthing looks good, but when I burn it to DVD both the audio and video hang or pause for approximatly 1-2 seconds in 5 seperate dances.  This happens when I play the full show, and when I select the chapters individually.  I have tried to change some of the settings and re-burn the DVD but I get the pauses in the same locations for the same chapters.  I checked the AVI files and they play without the pauses.
Reading through the fourms I don't really know if its a transcoding problem, a layer-split issue with the duel layer disc, a weak computer, or if Adobe just doesn't like me.  It seems like I've been fighting this entire project begining with CS3 not liking the JVC MOD format, to burning the master discs for replication.  Can someone point me in the right direction as to troubleshooting my pausing issue?
Since I will be doing another show for X-Mas If anyone has suggestions as far as workflow improvements, I would really appreciate a heads-up in that area too.
    basic Comp stats:
    Celeron [email protected] GHz
    2Gb Ram
    Win 7  64bit

    Could be lots of things.
used the "export to chapter list" feature to make 40 seperate chapters (39 dances + a full show chapter).
Are you referring to "Create Chapter Index"?
I would create a new project using just one avi that had problems, and see if the problem shows up there.

  • Can disc utility copy an R+ dvd disc for playback on a dvd player on TV

I have a dvd (R+) that plays on my TV okay via a Sony DVD Player. When I try to copy it with the Finder to another R+ DVD the copy plays back okay on my iMac but not on the TV (using File Info on the copy the format is Mac OSX Extended). Can Disc Utility make an exact copy that won't have this problem?

Thanks, I was able to regenerate & verify that the DVD copy from the Master worked okay with my Sony DVD Player & TV. By using Disc Utility to generate the disc image &then the actual DVD copy I got the UDF format (which I guess stands for Universal Data Format). It is strange that the Finder's DVD copy process does not do the same, it always gives you the Mac OSX Extended format which doesn't work on a TV.

  • Problem with Direct to DVD VRD-MC6: Playback width wrong

I made a DVD copy of a tape in my Sony Digital 8 Handicam DCR-TRV310, using an iLink cable, to my Direct to DVD VRD-MC6.  Play back of the DVD in my Sony Blue Ray DVD player BDP-BX510 on my Sony KDL-46WL140 Bravia TV was stretched width wise, distorted.  Adjusting the width setting on the TV did not fix it.  Play back from the camera directly to the TV is fine. Proper 4:3.  How do I fix this? Will the VRD-MC6 Direct to DVD make a proper 4:3 aspect ratio copy from my Digital 8 Handicam?

  • HD DVD encoding and playback problem

    Hello,
we are running into a problem with some HD dvd authoring lately. We are using 1920x1080 23.98fps film based source material and encode it for HD DVD use with compressor. Like it says in the documentation we are using the hd dvd presets and just adjust the output to 720P for an H.264 encode. Apparently since the last upgrade to DVD studio 4.2 it is now possible to encode progressive h.264 with a framerate of 23.98 fps. Well as i said we encode the footage with compressor, import it into DVDSP 4.2 and include it into our project. Everything works fine until we put it into our DVD player (Toshiba HD-A20). The menus and everything works and looks great, but when we are playing the 720P 23.98fps H.264 clips we get a way too fast playing clip, basically as if it is trying to play it at 29.97 fps. Does anyone else run into that problem? First we thought it is the player, but then we tried playing the disc in our Macpro and the same problem. 1920x1080 works great with Mpeg2 29,97fps compression, even though, because we have film based 23.98fps source material it seems to stutter slightly. I wonder if we need to include 2:3 pulldown in order for the player to remove it properly. Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Gorilla

    Harm,
Sorry for not responing for a few days, but I runned the benchmark you'll send me. The main results (dee details attached file):
    53,6,  secs Total Benchmark Time
    6,4,  secs AVI  Encoding Time
    14,2,  secs MPEG Elapsed Time
    33,  secs Rendering Time
Since the potential problem is my hard disk, inaddition, I runned HDtune (hopefully it will help pinpionting the problem):
disk1: avarage transfer rate: 94MB/s, acces time 13.8ms, burst rate 185MB/s
disk2: avarage transfer rate: 85MB/s, acces time 14ms, burst rate 157MB/s
disk3: avarage transfer rate: 73MB/s, acces time 13.9ms, burst rate 183MB/s
Analyzing these results, could the current hard disk configuration cause the problem I have, or is my system to slow anyway to edit AVCHD material?
If the hard disk configuration is the problem, could it be solved by applying your suggestion by removing all partitions? Since, I'm not looking forward of removing all partions(re-installing windows (dual boot win7 and vista), shifting a huge amount of data, etc), but if it would help I will do it.
    Thanks inadvance,
    Jeffrey

  • Can you replicate the video DVD autolaunch and playback on a Flash drive?

I'm creating a motion graphics presentation in Motion and I normally burn these to DVD with DVDSP where it automatically plays when you insert it into a DVD player or computer.
My client wants to distribute the presentation on Flash drives, though, and give those out. My thinking is that a Flash drive is only data and so we would need to distribute the presentation as a QT movie file, which would require the end user run the file.
There's no way to make a computer think a Flash drive is a video DVD, is there?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, the companies you buy those custom USB Flash drives from will put any file you want on them and I'm familiar with the auto run .ini option in Windows. The problem with that is playing a QuickTime movie file on a PC or Mac doesn't look as good at full screen as a video DVD, in my opinion, and the end user would have to manually tell it to go full screen. Finally, not all computers have the auto run feature enabled because of the virus issue you cited, and the end user would have to right-click on the drive and select "Explore" in Windows, or find the file in the Finder, and then manually run it.
Video DVD is great because it looks great at full screen and it's platform agnostic. If you insert one into any computer with a DVD drive, it will either auto play or it will give the user a dialog asking them if they want to play it.
But from a marketing perspective, the USB Flash drive is better because when you give them out to people (with your company's logo on it), people are more likely going to use it and see your presentation versus a DVD disc.
    Thanks!

  • Still photographs to dvd and tv playback ?

I have yet to burn a dvd that I can use or like... I've made many "test" dvd's and all of them seem to have flicker in some of the still images that have white areas and the end product seems to be slightly soft (NOT VERY SHARP IMAGES )...
I have used iphoto, imovie and idvd to make these dvd's. When I view the end project on my Mac G5 from my hard drive, in iphoto it works and looks great !
When I try and finish the job it goes down hill from there. Is it the compression that is making the quility go south ?
I see shows on tv that look GREAT as still images. No flicker and sharp still images...What do I need to do to get great quility from a burned dvd and still images ?

Put the aerial feed in to the YouView box 'antenna in' and connect a cable from the YouView 'aerial out' to the 'aerial in' on your TV. Connect YouView box HDMI out to HDMI socket on your TV if you have one. If not connect the YouView to SCART to your TV SCART. Connect your DVD player to the other SCART socket.
Use the AV setting on your TV to switch to the YouView box and:
Go in to you YouView menu as follows:
YouView/Settings/Device Management and make sure 'RF Loop Through' is set to ON.
This will allow you to access your own TV's tuner and YouView also.
Use the 'AV' setting on your TV to switch between TV's own tuner, YouView and your DVD player.
HDMI is preferable but if you don't have any HDMI sockets - and most TVs do these days - then SCART will have to do.
I hope you get it working.

  • Can burn DVD but no playback.

After ripping and burning a movie DVD, I can play it on my DVD player, but, not on my 17" iMac. Rented DVD's play OK. Media?

You're posting in the Intel based iMac forum, but your signature only lists a G4 - is that what you're experiencing a problem with?
If that is the case, you might get more knowledgeable answers in the forum for G4's:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=137
In the meantime, you might want to check your Mac's media capabilities under System Profiler; I remember that the older Macs were extremely particular and finicky about reading +R vs. -R disks.
