DVD Stuck Inside Superdrive

I watched a DVD, pushed the Eject button (F12), the eject symbol on the screen lit up, but the DVD did not eject. Now, the Superdrive isn't showing up on the desktop.
I've restarted the computer...nothing. I've held the eject button down for a while...nothing.
Any ideas? I'm in Afghanistan, so taking the Superdrive to an Apple store is not an option. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My apologies for not being clearer. You can find the Terminal application the the Utilities folder, which is inside your Applications folder. Alternatively you can just enter the word Terminal in Spotlight (the little magnifying glass on the top right of your screen).
When you open Terminal you should see a command prompt.
Type "drutil tray eject" (without the quotes and all in lower case) and press the return/enter key.
This basically sends a low level command to the Superdrive to spit out whatever is in it. My experience is that this has a higher chance of success then pushing keys when restarting. If this command doesn't work I'm afraid the disk is blocked somehow.

  • DVD stuck in Superdrive

I was watching a DVD, and when it finished, I went to go eject it.
The ejecting noise started but didn't work and the DVD remained inside as though it just received a new DVD.
I've tried moving it sideways to eject, but nothing happens and the DVD scratching noise started.
Anyway I can get eject it successfully?
MacBook 2.0Ghz White Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Doesn't work. I've tried to restart quite a few times. What you suggested worked for me before for a DVD that played, but then couldn't be read. This DVD has not been successfully read. Now, after spinning for a few minutes, it makes an attempt to spit it out, but can't. The sounds are all right for ejection, but the DVD just doesn't appear. Thanks and help appreciated.

  • DVD drive with DVD stuck inside.

I dropped my MacBook with a DVD inside. Now the DVD won't play or eject. How do I eject the DVD from the drive?

It's likely you'll have to get physical. This works but requires a few tries.
Take two playing cards. You'll use these as tweezers essentially. Use fairly stiff high quality ones.
Fish around gently and put one on top of the disk and one on the bottom of the disk.
Once in place keep sweeping in and pulling out as you hit the eject button trying to grab (with friction and sweeping motion) and pull it out. Don't fully remove the cards but keep sweeping in and out. It works on MacBooks and slot loading iMacs.
This is assuming your macbook still makes the eject sound like it's trying to push something out. I've gotten disks out that have had 2 disks stuck in as well as stuck disks from faulty drives.
IVe also also used business cards but playing cards work best.

  • I can't make my mbp start & it has a DVD stuck inside it

Any help with this gratefully received. It's an original (bought jan 08). When I press the on button it makes a whirring noise but the screen fails to turn on. I cannot eject the DVD (rental godfather part 2!). Any suggestions?

Yeah I think you are right. Thought I was getting somewhere in that I tried resetting PRAM which made the backlight on keyboard light up & I got the stuck DVD out but alas still no further forward. I've been having battery issues too lately so will hand in for repairs - fortunately I have apple protection plan. Thanks for getting back to me.

  • DVD stuck in superdrive. What do I do?

I'm sure it's not a software problem, because when I press eject, I hear noises, but the DVD doesn't come out. Every time I press eject, DVD Player pops up, and a movie starts playing.

Then it is physically stuck either due to drive failure or that the media was out of specs. If the Mac is still under warranty and/or don't want to ruin the drive, you'll have to take it in to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider.
This is a fairly common occurrence and the techs there have ample experience in coaxing the thing out. Might even do it for free.

  • DVD stuck inside dead MacBook

My wife spilled boiling water on my MacBook and it hasn't been able to start up since. I'm told by a Mac Genius that the computer will need at least an $800 repair, if not complete replacement. While I wait for it to dry out and try to decide what course to take with the machine, is there a way to mechanically remove a disc from a slot-loading disc drive? Since my warranty is already voided, I'm willing to go in with power tools if necessary. Please help!

I was influenced by your power tool comment. Actually, if it was pure water that spilled, and it wasn't damaged by attempts to start it when wet, and if it didn't melt the screen or something like that, there is a chance that it could still work when dried out. Sugar water is bad because of residue after drying.
Here's a general troubleshooting article, in case it isn't completely dead:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88275
I have seen mention of using a credit card to poke a disc free of the internals, perhaps combined with turning it slot side down to use gravity, but I don't know details. Unfortunately, on the slot-load drive there is no manual release hole or equivalent.

  • DVD stuck on boot

I was trying to eject a dvd disc inside superdrive, but it seems to stuck. You can see the dvd tile in finder is gray, looks like it's about to come out, but it takes forever. After a while, I decided to restart the MBP hoping to eject it upon booting. But the laptop stuck before the gray screen. Anybody has had the similar issue before?
    Thanks

Try holding down the trackpad button at startup and see if it ejects then ?

  • DVD stuck in drive ... tried everything...

I have an older (2007) Macbook Pro with a DVD stuck inside of it.
I have tried to force eject by using
    Terminal commnand
    Restart holding mouse / trackpad
    Restart holding EJECT
    Restart holding OPTION
and even downloading DISK EJECT app.
    None have worked.
The DVD does not show up on my desktop nor in any application.
When I attempt to burn a disc in iTunes (to see if it sees a disk in the drive) it tell me that there is no burner or software.
When I start up the macbook I hear the disc spinning in the drive but when it gets to my desktop screen, it spins down and never can be accessed.
This is an important DVD disc with files on it I need.  can anyone help with this?

you need to take it somewhere to have a professional look at it if none of the following steps work
    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • MacBook Air. How to eject CD when it stuck inside of Super Slim DVD player?

I'm using MacBook Air with Super Slim USB2.0 (portable DVD player). I inserted a Blu-lay disk in accident and then the disk stuck inside of the player. I can hear motor sound from the player but disk does not come out. I tried to write "drutil eject" on Terminal but did not work. Please help me how to take the disk out of Super drive. Thanks!

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • DVD stuck in machine

Just bought a Mac b/c everyone told us how great they are. All we have had is problems with the DVD player. I know there are other threads about this, but none of the solutions seem to work.
1.The DVD player does not come up and does not recognise that a DVD is in the machine.
    2. Disc utility is useless b/c the DVD disc does not register as an open drive
    3. Restarted held mouse down does not work
    4. Shut down and held mouse button down does not work.
5 Hit eject button numerous times
6 Intel based so the method they suggest in the help question does not work
7 Disk drive is slot on side of screen, no manual eject button.
    8. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED!!!
Any new suggestions short of taking it back to Apple and getting a PC will be gratefully welcomed.

This is the third flaw in my new Intel iMac two of which I have reported earlier:
    1) The CD:s and DVD:s are stuck in the superdrive due to warping. My iMac Super drive runs so hot that CD:s and DVD:s which have a full disk label taped on them will warp due to different heat expansion of paper and plastic. I have a number of disks of this kind from an American university and I cannot use them in my iMac. They are stuck inside the superdrive within a few minutes. The same disks work fine in my old PowerTowerPro OS9 machine or in any other machine with a cool superdrive.
So far I have the following options to fix the problem:
1a) Make copies of the disks somewhere without paper labels. Big task. Disks with no paper label on them work fine on my iMac.
1b) Buy a new La Cie FireWire superdrive, 105 euros.
1c) Increase the cooling of the existing superdrive. Does anyone know if there is a terminal command to increase the speed of the fans?
1d) Try to remove the paper labels from the disks. My first attempt failed. I washed a disk with hot water to get the label soft to scrape it away. The disk did not warp any more in the iMac superdrive but some of the data was lost (not all).
    Any better solutions?
    The two earlier problems were:
    2) The Apple keyboard produced multiple characters on the screen with one key stroke. This happened especially with the left hand keys like a and s. Replacing the keyboard with another Apple keyboard did not help. A Logitech keyboard did not produce multiple characters (and would help) but I finally found another solution with the help of FiMug-people: I set the "Slow Keys ON" in the system preferences and adjusted the smallest possible delay to prevent multiple characters appearing. This is not a good solution but will do. If Logitech keyboard works OK there must be a design flaw in the Apple keyboard.
    3) My iMac started to kernel panic when in sleep (did not wake up from sleep). I tried several remedies given on these forums but none did help. I finally found a simple solution: I adjusted the Energy saver to Apple defaults: Both the display and the iMac to go to sleep if unused for 10 minutes. (Previously I had 10 minutes for the display and 15 min for the computer).

  • DVD-RW with Superdrive?

Hi, I have a video camera with DVD-RW discs and a MacBook Air, and I was wondering if the discs were compatible with the Superdrive (I only ask because the discs are smaller than normal CD's.) If not, then what is a good alternative to edit a movie on the MBA? Thanks.

and I was wondering if the discs were compatible with the Superdrive
They aren't, and may get stuck inside if inserted.
If not, then what is a good alternative to edit a movie on the MBA?
Use a tray-loading optical drive, or if possible, connect the camera to the MacBook Air through USB. If you have another computer, you may be able to transfer the footage to it and then to the MacBook Air over a network.

  • DVD stuck in my PC

I Have managed to get a DVD stuck in my PC.  The tray still opens and closes but the disc is still there.
I cannot risk scratching as it contains irreplacable photos.
Need help on how to remove the disc drive to get access.

  • DVD stuck in drive but drive opens on Satellite A notebook

    Hi,
I have a DVD that is stuck inside the drive even though the dvd drive door opens and closes normally. The DVD was put in the drive and the drive door closed but the DVD was never snapped/locked into place.
Any idea on how to remove it?
    All help will be appreciated.
    Steve

Sorry but I do not understand what you want. If you can open the DVD devices door open it and try to remove the DVD media. DVD media is fixed with three small plastic parts that can be removed back. If you cannot remove alone ask somewhere for help.
I do not know what to say here. For some concrete opinion I need to have the notebook in front of me to see how it looks like.

  • 2 CDs stuck inside

I have 2 CDs stuck inside the CD/DVD drive slot. Do I need to open up the back of the machine and take out the burner to try and get these out? When the computer is on the drive tries to automatically eject but nothing will come out.

    Hello,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The optical drive is a sealed unit so removing the back of the iMac won't loosen the discs.
Surely one of the disks is protuding from the drive? I can't see how two could fit in a slot loading drive (and I'm not tempted to try too hard to find out).
My feeling is that if you can't pull out either disk, then the only way to do it would be to removed the optical drive from the iMac and try to open the drive enough to free the disk - optical drives are precision bits of kit though and unless you know what you're doing you could very quickly end up with a dead drive.
It may be worth consulting your local AASP.

  • Disk stuck INSIDE laptop - Pavilion 17-e110dx (F9L87UAR#ABA)

    Hello -
I have a Pavilion 17-e110dx (F9L87UAR#ABA), running Windows 8.1. Today I put a DVD into my optical drive, and when I didn't hear it spinning, I ejected the drive, but the disk is now stuck INSIDE my computer....please help!  The drive opens and closes without any problems...where did my disk go?!   How can I safely remove the optical drive in order to get the disk out? I do not want to damage the disk, as it contains irreplaceable pictures.
Also - I purchased this laptop about a month ago, Refurbished, and it is still under warranty.
    Thank you!
    This question was solved.

Thank you very much...it worked! But I do have to tell you that when I pulled out the optical drive, the CD-R was actually inside the computer...not inside the optical drive. Very strange...never had this happen to me before, and I've been using computers for a very long time!
    thanks again.

It has to still be inside the optical drive. It is a closed tin can. Flip the laptop on its back, open the service bay and look for a single screw with a DVD drive icon next to it. Remove the screw and the DVD drive should slide out of the chassis with a little push from behind with a flat blade screwdriver. Pages 47-49 in this Manual show how.
    Manual
Once the drive is out of the chassis you can use the pinhole to open it with a bent-out paperclip. Open it all the way and you should be able to see the disk in there to remove it.
