DVD Studio 4 HD DVD Question

Hi,
As many of you know, there are two competing brands of HD DVD (HD DVD and Blue-Ray) and I would like to know which platform would be compatible with a HD DVD from DVD Studio Pro 4 HD?

Ahh, and therein lies the confusion of the whole HD battle. There are two competing technologies for HD optical disc delivery--Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. There are not two competing brands of "HD-DVD".
HD-DVD is the format that DVDSP can author to presently. Blu-Ray is not supported in this version of DVDSP. Will it be supported with the next? It's anyone's guess. Apple is a formal supporter of Blu-Ray technology, so the intuitive answer would be 'yes'. The 'when' and 'if' parts are only known by Apple.

DVD Studio Pro Asset Question

I have been rendering out to .mov files using QuickTime conversion out of Final Cut Pro. However, each time I try to import this .mov file as an asset in DVD Studio Pro it gives me an error stating incompatible format. How do I need to be rendering out of Final Cut so that it is an acceptable file format for DVD Studio Pro?

I am having the same problem. G5 quad 4GB of memory and plenty of disk free space. DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3. Compressor is also up-to-date.
I can save the project once, but thereafter if I try to save the project I get the message "The document xxx.dspproj could not be saved."
Any help would be appreciated.

DVD Studio 4 - PDF Question

Attempting to add several PDF files to a DVD I'm authoring (using DVD Studio Pro 4). The manual explains 2 ways to achieve this, neither of which is working for me. One way is using DVD@ccess using a URL link the other by putting them in DVD-ROM folder and linking it to a specific location.
I would greatly appreciate assistance if anyone has had success adding multiple PDF files to a DVD.

Thanks Shawn. It's true that DVD@ccess does not always work on PCs, that they can make it work installing the [email protected] file on the disc, but as you say, "good luck" they'd have to be a little computer suave and they might be scared of installing anything for viruses (similar problem occurs getting them to install quicktime).
But with the instructions I listed above, it works on Macs! I think that's pretty cool! It took me quite a while and investigation to get it to automatically open the .pdfs. I'm not exactly sure why it isn't working for thinkfink, but I'd have to see some screenshots to be sure.
Vice versa, to do the same type of thing on a PC you have to use Flash and a special program to automatically open .pdfs and that Flash communicates with that special program via a .exe command and so it doesn't work on Macs.
To sum up, I think it's a cool tool we can use without having to buy more software and makes a DVD cooler...for Mac people at least!

Dvd studio pro: DVDs won't work on DVD player and windows computer

I have burnt some dvds on DVD Studio Pro I checked they were set to SD and PAL and have played them on my MAC and DVD player no problem but now I am hearing back from my client that they tried playing them on their windows computer and laptop and their DVD player and it isn't working what could be the reason for this?

You can see if they have another software player available. Usually VLC is a good option. Windows player can be a bit all over the place depending on patches of the OS and other items. I have encountered some strange things, including people claiming that DVDs I have authored were doing things that had nothing to do with the DVD (beyond the scope of what a DVD can do, etc.)
When you say DVD Player, does this mean they are also trying to play it in a DVD Player (real player and not in computer?) How did you burn the DVD? Straight from DVD SP? Check first play settings and other items?
These are some of the first things I would be starting with, particularly if real DVD players (not in computers) are concerned. It also can be something as small as dirt or scratches on the DVD itself. Some machines can be better at compensating than others are.

DVD Studio Pro- DVD won't burn, will only format

I'm trying to burn a DVD with DVD Studio Pro, eveyrthing works great in simulator. I exported from FCP to Compressor and used the Best Settings 90 min for compression (my video is 23 min). When I click burn it goes through the steps but after it goes to formating it says formatting complete and ejects the DVD, the log says this.... I specifially noticed this line "Note: The file ‘.DS_Store’ found in the ‘build’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.

Any idea why that is happening? I've tried just using build and putting the HVDVD_TS folder onto my desktop and then putting it from my desktop onto a DVD and buring that, but that didnt work either.

Nevermind I figured it out, I was trying to do it as a HD dvd, thinking that meant 1920x1080 not blueray, it worked as a SD

DVD Studio Pro DVD won't play in DVD player

I created a movie in Final Cut Pro 7, sent it to Compressor, and created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro. When I try to play the DVD on my DVD player it says that it "can't play the disc." The movie files from Compressor are "Sequence 1- Dolby Digital Professional 2.0.ac3" and "Sequence 1-MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass.m2v." The project is set to SD DVD, being put on DVD+R discs, and I haven't had any warnings in the Log while creating the DVDs.
I've tried just using the "burn" button and also using "build & format" but neither work. It will play on my Macbook, but I need it to play on the DVD player. I also need to burn about 30 working discs in the next two days. Please Help!!!!

You need to start a new DVDSP project for the setting to change from HD to SD.

Will DVD STUDIO PRO dvd's play on P.C.'s?

Will DVD STUDIO PRO created dvd's play on P.C.'s? If not how can I create projects that will play in DVD players on P.C.'s MAC's and in standard home DVD players?

In my experience (not big productions) all PC playback problems were related with the DVD playback software, and more specifically with customers trying to use Windows Media Player as DVD player.
Have you personnaly saw one of those machines? I mean, have you "see" by yourself a computer that can play comercial pressed DVDs and not your DVD-R discs?
You can ask to a confident customre with such problems to install the free and crossplataform VLC Player to check if he can play your disc using this software.
An after all your authoring/burning workflow can affect your discs, i.e. are you using labels? What brand of media are you using? What burning speed
are you using? . . . and so, and so.

Are you sure? Does the menu have the First Play symbol in the top left corner?

Dvd Studio Pro DVD RW issues

I use dvd rw's at work every day. I have never had issues until yesterday when I put a dvd rw in the drive to burn a video for a woman. When I click burn it goes through all the menus, and then goes to writing image and the status bar stays at full, i can't click cancel, and it doesn't go to burn. Also, the disc never spins during the erasing process. I used a DVD -R instead and it worked fine. I could blame the woman who brought her disc in but that's rude.

It could very well be the disc. Some brands are just bad. Since you are able to burn onto other DVD RW or DVD-R disc I would suggest just doing that.

DVD Studio Pro - Menu question

I am using a template for my menu, where the curtains part and a photo, which I have imported, is revealed. Somehow I must have deleted the photo; but when I try to apply it again, it takes up the whole screen, replacing the curtain. None of the other choices for applying it work either. Anyone know what I can do?
Also, my graphical view is blank, altho the DVD has multiple buttons, and they do function properly. How do I get the graphical view back?

You didn't delete the photo, you deleted the drop zone.
The shape you deleted was the "theatercontent.pox"
Try this and if it does work, then just hit undo.
Select the menu, navigate the menu template under templates/apple, and double click on the theater menu template. This should reapply it.
As to the graphic view, simply click on the tab for graphic view rather than outline view.

APTS DVD Studio Pro 4 questions

I running into problems and I do get not a answer yet from peachpit or Martin Sitter (he only says that it is peachpit where i should send my qeustion to), perhaps someone in this forum does have a answer.
In Lesson 15 Creating Menu Elements page 441 there is speak about the BBButtonStyle to put it in the Project tab, I don't get it in there (only in the Custom)
(no big deal but...) When I choose 'Project' it isn't their (tab) when I choose Custom it is there.
Also in this Lesson on page 446 about the place holder text in the dropzone. They are both (Place.. .ipr and the dropzone ) 400 x 60 pixels but still I get the 'Place holder Text (or next Chapter menu)
The text is wel out of the dropzone (text is shown half and jagged).
I have 3 Mac's and tested on 2 of them (MBP and dual 2.5 PM) and they both have the same 'error'.
I did not find any addendum on Peachpit website about this.

I'm not sure if it was with the release of 4.0 (or some patch afterwards), but DVDSP no longer sees video files (QuickTime movies, LiveType or Motion projects) for there true size -- everything is interpreted as 720x480 (for NTSC) or 720x576 (for PAL) when placed in a menu.
Can't speak on the Button style thing, haven't tested that myself...

FCP TO DVD STUDIO 3 - DVD PLAYER COMPATABILITY

I've created dvd that plays on home dvd but not another one at work. Is there a configuration key, something universal that will work with all players?
ACtually, the video plays on both but I am unable to get the start menu, which in this case, is critical.

In general, I have had the best compatibility luck with a variety of players by using DVD-R (8x) blank media.
Not sure what you mean by a start menu. Do you mean the main menu, or the first play (the thing that auto plays when you insert the disc)?
What happens when you insert the disc in eack of the two scenarios?

DVD Studio Pro dvd not working in dvd player

I'd really appreciate your help.
I've burnt a dvd using DVD SP - it reads 'formatting succesful' and ejects the disk.
It works on my mac but not on my dvd player - it reads 'disk error'.
Here's the thing: I've burnt it with ToastTitanium and it works on my dvd player.
So it's not the dvds I'm using that's the problem.
I've checked other forums and I've unchecked the box 'lossless linking' - still not working.
I'm desperate.

Im wanting to buy a DVD Studio Pro 4 from a friend that bought FCS2 but doesnt need the DVD Studio. My question is, will it run on a Macbook?? Not Macbook Pro, just the regular Macbook? Thanks!

Emergency questions exporting for dvd studio pro (ntsc and pal)

I'm under a tight timeline and would appreciate any help possible. I'm experimenting with outputs/burning today so the real thing can happen tomorrow.
I have an hour long project that was shot on two different kinds of cams -- a sony hdv V1U and pan dvx100b. The first shot mostly in 16:9, the second squeeze 24p. We imported all footage as non-hd though, because the V1u has had problems syncing properly with hd settings with final cut. The issue/question now is this-
I don't know what file format (I'm assuming mpeg-4 for DVD studio pro, but using compressor or no?) or settings to use -- I'm used to mpeg-4, but for some reason it is coming out all grainy/pixelated and I'm not sure if I need to adjust the settings. Also, once exported into a usable/high quality format, I need to burn a ntsc dvd but also a pal dvd -- I've burned pal dvds on dvd studio pro before and know adjusting the settings is just in preferences, but I'm assuming the video will need to be converted into a different kind of file. Or no?
My sequence settings are 1440x1080 (16:9), quicktime video settings compressor hdv 1080i60. When I export as a quicktime file the conversion is great and no problems, but that isn't workable in dvd studio pro.
I would appreciate any advice you could offer,

Thank you, I'm trying that -- someone else just mentioned it needing to be an mpeg 2 file as well. The trouble I'm having now in compressor is it isn't converting when I press submit -- nothing is showing up in the batch monitor. I've tried this directly exporting from fcp using compressor, as well exporting quicktime from fcp and then using the quicktime file in compressor.
I'm not used to using compressor so I'm thinking I am not doing something properly in this process? Thank you for the suggestions, they are reassuring. Do you know if the same file produced by compressor can be used for the pal dvd?
