DVD studio and iDVD 6 projects and templates ?

I have a couple of projects made in iDVD which I would like to use as a starting point and combine into a DVD Studio 4 project(s). I see on the forum that there is a possibility to import iDVD4 project, but not v.5 or 6. Having made some iDVD stuff "on the road" it would be an advantage to be able to make a more permanent solution in DVD Studio without having to spend a lot of time redoing everything, templates and all...
1, Is it way of saving/ exporting iDVD 6 projects as iDVD 4?
2, Is there any 3rd party software that could be used to import iDVD projects into DVD Studio?
3, Is there any way of at least importing some iDVD 5 or 6 templates?
4, Is there any source for DVD studio templates that resemble the iDVD 5 or 6 ones?
5, Is there any source for additional DVD studio templates?
6, Is there an Apple "fix" for this missing import issue on the way?
thank you in advance for any ideas and info

The answer is the first four questions is NO.
Google DVD Themepaks and you'll find additional themes for DVD SP.
You can extract the menu VOB from the iDVD disc image using MPEG Streamclip and use that as an asset for a menu, but that requires no menu buttons to start with.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Compressing ProRes 2K for DVD Studio and getting rough edges?

I'm trying to get the best quality DVD burned possible working with a ProRes 2K project, original footage was 4K RED, and I'm getting rough, pixeled edges when I view the DVD. OK--Here's the workflow:
-All RED 4K ftg has been transcoded to ProRes 2K and edited into a ProRes 2K sequence
    -I export a quicktime movie, self-contained
-I take that quicktime into Compressor
-I choose "Best Quality DVD 90 Minutes" setting for audio and video (AC3 and m2v)
-In the geometry, I choose the 2.35 padding to make the aspect ratio look right (this i had to figure out by troubleshooting it myself)
-I take those into DVD studio pro and burn them onto an SD DVD.
When I do this with my XDCAM 1080p footage, it looks fantastic. When I do it with this project's footage, it looks like garbage. Pixels, edges are rough, just looks like low resolution. I've tried all different options of bit rate, no 2.35 padding, etc. Everything looks low res on the DVD.
UPDATE: upon checking the quicktimes in each step, i notice the first quicktime export (the File>Export>Quicktime Movie (self-contained checked), looks fine, but the problem seems to be in the work the Compressor is doing. Any suggestions?
    Please help!
    thanks

Have you tried switching on Frame Controls? Experiment with some of the Frame Controls settings on a short section of the movie, particularly the Resize filter and Anti-alias / Details Level.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 - Keep Pictures on Templates in Color

Some DVD Studio pro 4 templates do not allow inserted pictures to keep their original color.  Is there a way to change this?

Yep, I was just impatient it seems.

It stops at 98% for an hour, but if you watch your hard disk you can see it beeing filled with data. So I just turned off my montior and took a walk for a while and it was done.

  • Completed QT movie changes format when imported into iDVD and DVD Studio

I made a few movies and I simply want them on a DVD. I convert them into QT movies and everything looks great. I filmed both movie using my Canon Vixia M30 in 60i and maximum quality. When I move the files into iDVD, it squishes the actual movie into 4:3 even though the original QT movie is 16:9 and iDVD is set up for 16:9 and the quality is horrible. I check the "Project Info" and my 3.1GB file has shrunk down to a 376MB file. I tried to put the file into DVD Studio and the same thing happened. This has happened with the last two movies I made. I'm really getting frustrated. What am I doing wrong? Help!!

A DVD uses the highly compressed MPEG2 codec. So it is impossible to have it look exactly the same.
Nothing you can do about that, the DVD video specification is strictly set out.
First of all, export from FCP. Self contained with Current Settings (same as the Timeline).
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your video fits into -for example: *DVD 90 mins Best Quality 16:9*. Import the resulting MPEG2 and AC3 files into DVD Studio Pro. You must also tell DVD SP that your film is 16:9.

  • PDfs and DVD Studio Pro 3.0

    Hi:
Totally new to this, so forgive the possibly sillyquestion. I would like to make a book (already in pdf format) part of my DVD Studio Pro 3.0 project and have it play on commercial DVD players. Is that possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • DVD Studio Pro vs iDVD

I have to make a dvd at work - it's just going to be b-roll video with buttons to select different sections of the video. I'm pretty sure we should be using DVD studio pro but my project manager thinks we should use iDVD since it's free. Can anyone fill me in on the major differences between the two?
    Thanks!

DVD Studio Pro is worlds more complicated than iDVD, and even though newer versions offer some of the ease-of-use of iDVD, there are many settings you'll have to worry about that just aren't an issue with iDVD. Furthermore, if you're used to AfterEffects, the timeline is probably going to cause you to approach DVD authoring in the same linear fashion as creating video effects, and that will only cause headaches in the future. Most importantly, your Flash/Director experience will probably leave you infinitely frustrated with the limitations of DVD when it comes to creating a "multimedia" interface, because with DVD it's all an illusion. Nothing is loaded into the player beforehand, so everything is a stream, not a routine running on computer hardware that can do several things at once. My best advice is to use iDVD until you need to move forward, or experiment with DVD Studio Pro on your own time until you feel confident enough to do real work with it.
The biggest point I'm trying to make is, to quote Yoda, "You must unlearn what you have learned."

  • Final Cut Studio and OS 10.5 problems

Since upgrading to Leopard on my G5, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro and Motion have not been working properly. DVD Studio Pro opens but none of the program-specific pulldown menus appear at the top of the screen. DVD Studio Pro, File, Edit Project, Arrange, etc. pulldowns are simply missing. In addition, all other pulldown menus in the program (e.g., First Play, Background, Overlay File, etc. appear but do not function. Soundtrack Pro and Motion also have the missing menu bar items, but I haven't had time to see if other functions are also affected. Final Cut Pro appears to be working normally.
Fortunately (and a bit mysteriously), I have the same programs on my Macbook Pro and they seem to have been unaffected by the transition to 10.5. I had upgraded that system first and everything seemed to go pretty smoothly, so I decided to upgrade the G5 as well.
I've trashed preferences files to no effect and was hoping to find a solution short of reinstalling all of Final Cut Studio or, worse, the OS. Any suggestions or reports of a similar nature would be appreciated. Thanks.

ill just add what I am experiencing to see if anyone can help. I have no problem with drop down menus or DVD studio pro. I am using the FCP 4.5 however.
    Here is my deal.
I've got issus with Leopard - perhaps with everyone else on here. Specifically. I am trying to make m2v of my FCP project. I first attempted to send it to compressor with the response from compressor being "no background processing able" This happened once before a long time ago and I have NO idea how to correct that. I installed complete new software on another drive and the same thing happened. Is FCP 4.5 not compatible with OSX10.5?
Also I tried going through quicktime conversion but I could not select mpeg2 compression. WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT when I installed 10.5 - any idea how to restore that?
If that wasn't bad enough. I went to titanuium toast 7.1.2 and tried burning a FCP DV file just to test. I get the message Mac OS error- cant burn!!!
HELP!!!!! How can I get compressor to work, or quicktime mpeg2 compression plugin back to confiugre through FCP, or just burn in toast?
    Thanks!!!!!

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 - dragging template to menu locks up the software

When I drag one of the templates to the menu window, DVD Studio Pro locks up.
The template displays in the menu window, but the Applying Template window stays on with the horizontal barber pole running.
The only recourse is to force a quit.
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Thanks------Roger from Louisville

After further investigation, it appears that I'm unable to create any shape on the menus (i.e. button shapes). Drag and drop of any pre-existing shape from the right-hand box has no effect at all.
Could this have anything to do with file system permissions?

  • DVD Studio 4 question

    I made a 34 minute hd video.
When I import the quicktime file to dvd sp, the file size is 5.3 gb.
I tried compressor, but didn't have any luck.  My dvd player wouldn't read the dvd.
    Any suggestions?
I assume I have to make the move a Mpeg-2 file.  I tried that in compressor...no luck.
    Thanks

I used Final Cut Studio to make the video. Some more info:
I was able to make a dvd using iDVD, but I want to use DVD SP because I have more control.
I used compressor and made a mpeg2 file and imported it into DVD SP.  I get this message when I try to burn:

  • Blurry Text from DVD Studio Pro

Hello, I've created 4 'slide show' type presentations in motion 2. Project settings are:
    Width: 1360
    Height: 768
    Bit Depth: 8 Bit
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720, 1440x1080) 1.33
    Field Order: None
    Frame Rate:59.94 fps
    Render Settings:
    Motion Blur: Samples: 8
    Shutter Angle: 360
    Output: Antialiasing Method: Best
I've tried many many compression settings:
    MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16/9.m2v
    Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC.mov
Importing raw motion files into DVD Studio Pro
All of the resulting dvds burned from DVD Studio pro look pixelated and blurry when played on a dvd player onto a Toshiba 32HL86. Unfortunately its an SD dvd player connectedt to the tv, so not sure if that has a major impace.
    DVD Studio Pro Settings are:
    Project: SD DVD
    Video Standard: NTSC
    General:
SD DVD Menus, Tracks and Slideshows:
    Display Mode: 16:9 Letterbox
    Encoding:
    MPEG-2-SD
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    Field Order: Auto
    Mode: One PAss VBR
    Bit Rate: 6.8
    Max Bit Rate: 8.0
    Motiion Estimation: Best
I am at my wits end, can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm not an expert, but have recently had similar problems with graphics that had text, black lines, lots of contrast, and movement. They looked great on HD but when I made a SD DVD, they were very blocky and pixellated - completely unusable. After lots of experimentation, I've finally got an acceptable dvd. Went back to my original shots - in Final Cut, (I'm not sure if you can do this in Motion) and carefully applied a little Gaussian Blur (.25 to1) to each according to how badly they pixellated. Also adjusted blacks and whites so they weren't so contrasty. Then made my mpeg with Compressor - two pass vbr, 6.8 mbps, best motion estimator. The Gaussian Blur seems to break up the areas that get blocked up and pixelated. SD dvd is such a lousy low resolution medium anyway, that it doesn't seem to result in any focus problems and helped most shots - I've even gone back and applied it to some of the regular footage that was pixellating. It was a lot of work, you may want to see if an expert weighs in on this.

  • Using recompressed files with same name -- DVD Studio keeps crashing!

    Hi,
I completed a project for a client, but they now want music added to certain parts of it. Because there are so many menus, buttons, etc., I decided to add the music in FCP, recompress the files using the same name as the original file used in DVD Studio, and hoped that everything would then relink.
It does relink (it gives me the message that assets may have changed timing, etc) but any time I try to do something (like Simulate it), it crashes.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a better or easier way to solve this problem? Would greatly appreciate anyone's help.
    Thanks!

In theory it SHOULD work, FCP seems to do a good job updating say if you are using a Photoshop file and you change it. The timeline in FCP shows the change and I never seem to get any problems there. With DVDSP, however, it's a whole different story. As the previous poster said, change the name and that should work. It sounds like your project might be beyond fixing that way however.

  • Why does DVD Studio Pro compress my 3GB video?

I thought since the original Quicktime movie I made with FCP was under the 4.7(?) capacity of a DVD, that Studio Pro wouldn't compress my 3GB movie. But after import to DVD Studio Pro the whole project only shows up as using 350MB of space. And when burned and played back the video looks horrible! Artifacting (?), etc.
Do I need to go into Compressor and select a setting there BEFORE bringing it into Studio Pro? What setting is recommended? (8 min, wide screen, HD).
    Thanks!

    >I thought since the original Quicktime movie I made with FCP was under the 4.7(?) capacity of a DVD, that Studio Pro wouldn't compress my 3GB movie.
Unfortunately, you thought wrong.  The DVD video specification requires MPEG-2 video and either AC3 or PCM audio, specially multiplexed and formatted as VOB files.  So the size of the source file doesn't really matter.
    >Do I need to go into Compressor and select a setting there BEFORE bringing it into Studio Pro?
    That would be preferable.
    >What setting is recommended?
Duplicate one of the DVD presets and adjust the bit rate to increase the quality ... but do not exceed 8.0mbps or the disc may stutter in some players.  Encode the audio as Dolby Digital (.ac3).
    >8 min, wide screen, HD
You're out of luck there ... DVD is a standard definition format only.  If you want to deliver HD content on an optical disc, it will have to be Blu-ray - not DVD.

  • Best Workflow for Dvd studio Pro

I am looking to get the best possible workflow for dvd output. I currently just export my FCE HD project as quicktime movie NOT self contained. I then pull it into DVD Studio Pro 3 and after i do all the menus I build and burn the dvd. The image quality is good, but after reading alot of posts here it seems alot of people put their projects through compression before dvd studio pro builds the project. Should i be doing this?
    Thanks.

Well, use the best encoder you can get your hands on. If you can budget for other encoders then maybe do that. Compressor will give you more control so its a good place to start,

  • How do I export from FCP5 to DVD if I don't have the DVD studio?

I have a FCP 5 and I'm trying to export my movies to DVD without loosing my quality. Have no DVD studio and so I can't compile back the m2v, ac3 and the aiff files together when I export the movie through the compressor. When I tried exporting any other way I got a low quality movie. What can I do?
    Thank you very much!

File - Export - Quicktime Movie
No need to click self-contained if you don't want to. iDVD will read and compress it for you even as a non self-contained movie.
