DVD STUDIO Build LAGTIME

Just wondering why it takes sooo long to encode assets on the start process in DVD studio Pro 3.0 when a program like DVD Arcitect takes only 15-20min on my HP workstation. I'm using the new Macbook Pro 2GHz,1GB ram. Using QT Mpa & mpv file (1.26GB Mpeg2). one menu, one button,one movie asset.
Is there a deferent protocol to speed things up. I have such a screaming computer and this shouldn't take so long. 4hrs to just build a project, 4Hrs....
I work for a major production house and need a faster turn around rate for this Mac when my PC is tied up..
Any Suggestions?

I would have to wait for a task to complete on one before I could get on with the 'other side' stuff... For me it would seem one machine is good, but two machines are better
Agreed, the more machines the merrier. Have a couple of PCs lying around, but going to try the MacBook Pro. Too many towers, too many wall warts and cables
Actually went to the downloads and installing the demos, if it works on the MacBook Pro, will let you know. Have a bunch of machines and will let one do its thing while I do my other things on the others
And if I can off load encoding to the MacBook Pro, would be nice. Right now it does alot of rendering/exporting of Final Cut files to bring back to other machines for authoring. And if I can get it to do close to real time encoding like you had (or even 1/2 real time), that would be great. FWIW, running Windows 2000 on the MacBook via Parallels so far has been impressive, and seems more responsive than my real PCs (granted my real PCs do not spec out close to the MacBook Pro, the most recent ones are something like 1 Ghz tower and the other is along the lines of a 1.3 or so laptop)

Let's try to clarify some things.
1. There is no DVD SP 4.5. The latest UB version is 4.2.1. Which do you have?
2. Did you do an upgrade install of Leopard, or a backup/clone of boot drive and then a clean install. Unless you do the latter, there are issues with the pro apps. And certainly an archive and install is not the way go.

Issues With DVD Studio Pro 1.5 - MPEG2 Encoding & Building Discs

Hi.
I'm having problems encoding MPEG2 files in final cut express - everytime I try to encode, final cut closes.
Also, when I go to build and format a disc in dvd studio pro, this also closes.
I have looked at updating dvd studio pro to 1.5.2 and although I have downloaded the .bin file for the update, I don't know how to get it to run. The download is from the following link ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120138 )

Of all the early versions of DVDSP, 1.5.2 was the most stable and you really ought to be using that if you are not going to upgrade further.
V1 was notoriously flaky. I used to chant 'Apple+S' every day when I used it, just to remind me to save... I lost count of the number of hours lost when the app hung or crashed. That version of DVDSP was built on an entirely different code base to the current version. There are still folk who prefer to use V1 despite its faults, but I am not one of them... although I do still run a version of it somewhere.
The upgrade will be straightforward enough. Double click the file you have downloaded and you should get a disc image. Open it and double click on the files inside. Keep your serial number handy, although I don't recall it being needed for a minor upgrade.
You may find that encoding is your biggest hurdle. Back in the day of v1.5 there were very few cheap options open to you. One was to use the Quicktime MPEG encoder, which was a system file you had to install into the QT folder in the system library. Since the system library can't be altered whilst the system is running (i.e. your mac is on) this was a bit of an issue - you either used the terminal app, or booted into target disc mode and used a second mac to put the file into the right location. Sheesh. Alternatively, you used an altogether better encoder - BitVice. These days you have many different options for encoding - try simply exporting from FCE as .mov and encoding in something else entirely. You need to end up with elementary streams -ideally a .M2V and .aiff (for audio). You should also have A.Pack installed on your hard drive. Use this to encode the audio to AC3 (Dolby Digital).
Then bring those assets in to DVDSP and author quickly. Use Apple+S frequently - like every time you make a change. Don't use the preview if you can avoid it, as it tended to crash out more often than not. Build the disc as a disc image and test it in DVDPlayer app.
Of course, for a relatively low cost you can now use DVDSP v3 or 4 (available on eBay most days, I think!) This uses a far more stable code base, a more graphical approach to authoring and has more bells and whistles (not that you'll need them all the time, if ever). It is based on DVD Maestro (PC App) and is very similar to use. Advantages are many and varied compared to V1 but there is a consequential hit on speed IMO. That said, if your mac is anything close to modern (I author mostly on an old G4 still) then you will be fine.

Installed Snow Leopard, now DVD Studio Pro won't build or burn a DVD

I eagerly upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard, but since installation when I go to burn a DVD with DVD Studio Pro, immediately it gives me this error message:
Compiler File Error
Build Cancelled.
I am using Final Cut Studio 2 with DVDSP v 4.2.1

DVD Studio Pro won't build right!!!

Hi,
I finishing my portfolio for college. And I getting problem after problem. I am using a Mac Pro 8 core leopard, final cut pro 5 and dvd studio pro 3. First I could import mpeg-2 to studio pro 3 that it would crash. That I upgraded to version 4 and updated as well. Then I could import mpeg2 to DSP but it would play strange, with half of the screen in green. I solved the problem exporting in mpeg 2 from after effects instead of final cut. I checked quicktime on export and the mpeg 2 wasn't there anymore like it was before. But I could export on final cut and after on mpeg2. After all that, imagine what happen. I finish all my portfolio, build to my HD, try to play on dvd player and it happened the same thing with the videos as before. Came up with the green part.
I don't know what to do anymore. I was going to try to start from scratch. Install the leopard or tiger on external hd, install final cut and dvd studio pro. And see what happen. Should I install DSP 3 or 4, tiger or leopard?
If anyone know the solution or have a suggestion, please help me!!! I don't know what happen, I never had this problem.

FWIW ... FCP 5 and DVD SP 3 are not officially supported on Intel Machines. Also Leopard has issues and should be installed via erase and install.

Which Version 4 (4.0.x. is not universal binary for intel machines.)
The green sounds like a corrupted file or Codec issue...

Thank you for your prompt reply. I first import all my assets, build my DVD, which may include one or more menus, pictures, music, etc. I use the simulator to test all aspects of video before burning. Making sure that the end jump works, if I add chapters, going to each chapter making sure buttons and end jumps for the chapters work. When I am satisfied I then go to burn/format function and delete or reuse any folders that the computer advises. The resolution is SD, display mode 16.9, Lossless linking, red laser, single, one side 12 cm. Thats about it. Haven't had a problem in the past just wondering what I could be doing wrong now. I am workingo on an imac, MAC OS X, 10.7.4, 2.93 GHz, Intel Core 17, Memory 8GB, 133mHz,DDR3.

I dvd studio pro 4 wont build and format on mabook pro

My dvd studios pro will not build and format with out crashing. I have a 300.00 dell computer that burns dvds all day long. But my 2700.00 mac book pro, and 1000.00 final cut studio can not make one dvd. what is up with that. I can do everything in dvd studio pro 4 except make a dvd. kind of stupid wouldn't you say. How do i get it to work? i have reinstalled 5 times. all updates are done and still nothing but crashes. took it to apple genius bar and they said "there is no reason under the sun that this should not be working". My computer is has more then enough power to run it. they checked everything and there is nothing installed wrong or not working properly. I asked what to do next and they said "i don't know, I guess your kinda out of luck" that was great of them to say. Does any one out there know what to do? Or has mac falsely sold me a 3700.00 dollar e-mail machine.

DVD Studio Pro 4 crashes right after build!!

Just recently my DVD Pro 4 has started crashing when it goes to fomat and burn to disc. It has worked flawlessly for the last 2 years and suddenly it can't get passed the format stage. It muxes and builds the files fine but right after that, like clockwork, the software shuts down and goes to desktop.
Recently I did have issues with my idisk and syncing. I played around with that and caused my external hardrives not to mount. I found a way to remount them and ever since that DVD Studio crashes on burn.
I tried repairing permissions and zapping P ram but nothing seems to work.
Any Ideas?

Hi:
As a workaround you can try just building to your hard drive and * Creating Disc Image in DVDSP * that you can burn with Toast and/or Disk Utility. After all, it's a good workflow for the future.
I would use an utility like DiskWarrior to cehck your system drive looking for bad files.
Seeing the other problems you had, probably it's time to make a clean install of your whole system. You can clone your system drive in your external drive as backup and reformat and install your system from zero. Trying to trace a system problem uses to be slower than just making a clean up of your machine.

DVD Studio 4 Crashes on Build/Format

I have a DVD set to build and formant. When I simulate the project it plays fine. However when I attempt to burn the DVD DVD Studio crashes. I have had no problems with DVD Studio before this. DVD is SD 16:9.

What exact version of OSX and DVDSP are you running? Some people running under 10.5.6 found similar issues. This [* SEARCH *|http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=f952&search=Go&q=10.5.6] shows some threads related to OSX 10.5.6.
Check if you are in the same situation that someone of those threads.

Hi,
I used Compressor (DVD:Best Quality 90 minutes) seting for my 30 minut video. After i imported to DVD studio pro i started building prosses . I am concern with time that its taken in building .Is it posible that DVD is doing what Compressor was doing ? It is been building for good 2 hours now 64% complete. Did i do somthing rong ???

Multiple threads in various forums isn't going to help this go any faster. It's quite possible your workflow is at fault, or not.
If you have motion backgrounds in your menus, any sort of graphics, you should track down what DVD SP is doing with these elements and what format these elements are in.

DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3 shuts down every time I build

Everytime I try to build or format a DVD studio Project the program shuts down at about 16%. Everything is fully updated. Can anyone help me?

Can you build any other project to get a copy of DVD@ccess copied to your harddrive?
Or do you have another DVD with DVD@ccess on it.
YOu will need a copy of the DVD@ccess folder with the .exe file in it.
Then...
If you "have" to have DVD@ccess in your project, build your project in DVD SP and burn the DVD in Toast.
Use the DVD from _TS folder option and name the disc and drag the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders onto the disc.
But also drag the DVD@ccess folder that you have onto the Toast disc as well.
This have the DVD@ccess folder as DVD-ROM data and will be ok for the user to find the DVD@ccess folder.
Just a thought...

DVD Studio Pro burning/ building help

I am attempting to burn a project to DVD fro DVD Studio Pro. I keep getting an error message that build was not complete due to I/O error. I checked my drive to make sure that my firmaware was up to date, and it was. The file is only 3.8G and I am trying to burn to a 4.7GB disc. I am wondering if I made a mistake when importing the assets. My original media came from AVID Express Pro and I exported as a Quicktime Movie. Can anyone help???

Well, we would need to know more about your hardware configuration, but to me it sounds like a classic hardware problem... check all cables and connections, and if you have any way to run diagnostics on your system and/or burner, that might reveal the issue.

Dvd studio pro- get black screen after build/format

hi all i need help, have made dvds before using dvd studio pro now it wont work.
in simulate the menu buttons and video work perfectly but once i build/format and mount it in toast the menu wont load, i get a black screen. i tried to unisnstall then reinstall and it hasn't helped.?
any thoughts?!

Did you remove receipts/packages to make sure the reinstall was done and/or did you delete preferences? Can you burn DVDs from DVD SP still?
