DVD Studio Freezes

Hi,
I've been using DVD Studio Pro for some time now without problems. Today, I am trying to create a DVD, and I am only doing one thing different than usual: I put in chapter markers in Final Cut Pro before I exported the MPEG-2 with Compressor. Now when I try to import the file into DVD Studio Pro it freezes the program as soon as I put the video into the timeline. Any idea what would be causing this?
Thanks!

If this helps any, the file keeps crashing Compressor and finder, too, and it continues to do so even if I recompress it from Final Cut.

  • DVD Studio is Freezing on me...

Hey everyone I've been having lots of trouble when I import my m2v file onto DVD Studio and it either freezes or it just doesn't show any image. I compressed it on compressor and that's another issue when I want to compress I get an exclamation point next to the m2v file can anybody tell me what's up with that? Thanks!

are you sure its dvdsp freezing? on many macs, if you don't turn off preview for .m2v files, you will freeze the computer for a bit while preview tries (in vain) to show you a preview. even if you're quick and drag the file into dvdsp, preview can still stall for many minutes.... come to think of it, i just reread your post and it seems you probably don't have this problem, but its good info nonetheless =)

  • DVD STUDIO PRO JUST QUITS OR FREEZES

I have 3 firewire drives attached and when in DVD studio Pro 2.0, sometimes the programme freezes or simply quits when I am building a DVD
This problem has previously never occurred when on my PowerMac G4 when I had less memory installed.
Should I upgrade to a different version of DVDSP? Or is this simply a matter of having too many external drives attached?

If you qualify, you must upgrade to the Universal Binary version of DVDSP.

Otherwise, it's a full price upgrade

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 freezing when I click on video tab in palette

I have a recent problem with DVD Studio Pro 4. When I open the application it appears to be okay, but when I click on the video tab in the palette the application freezes. All other tabs open okay: Templates, Styles, Shapes, Audio, Stills, but when I click on video the whole thing freezes.
This has only recently happened and I have used this software plenty in the past.
I would appreciate if anyone could help or let me know if you need more details.
    Cheers

I renamed the current pref file, com.apple.dvdstudiopro.plist, and restarted the application. This seems to have corrected the problem. A new version of the file was created when the application was restarted. Hopefully this will be a long lasting fix.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • Problems downloading the new DVD Studio Pro update.

    Hi Everyone,
    I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem/message when trying to download the new DVDSP update?;
'You appear to have already downloaded the DVD Studio Pro update.'
This also happened on the last updates that were released.
There is a workaround that I know of that I had to use last time but it seems strange that this is occuring. Has anyone else had any issues with this update (or the last for that matter)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as Apple Tech would not help me because I am on a Volume Licence and the Apple Store that I purchased it through has not given me any help.
    Thanks
    Carlo

I can get around this problem by using software update to download the updates and then use the downloaded file to update the machines but I would really like the ability to download the updates as a standalone dmg file.
I am running 20 systems on an airport network that will freeze up if I do the updates online the best i can do is 3 at once to avoid serious lag.
Being able to download them seperately was always my first choice so i could update the machines regardless of being conected to the net or not. The workaround that I am using only downloads the package file and it seems there is the possibility of them being corrupted or damaged over time (moving from server to drives to media to computers etc).
I still want to know why it thinks I have downloaded them already, it doesn't make any sense.

  • FCP Pro Res Super 16mm -- Compressor -- DVD Studio Pro (Nightmare Workflow Critique)

    Hello,
I figured I post here rather than the DVD Studio Pro forum; I've posted on Creative Cow as well but haven't gotten any responses yet.
Before I mention my problem, I'd like to mention that I've tried several types of compression methods and bitrates and unfortunately, my disk still freezes in my player, generally around the same area.
(I have two, minute long clips with Smoothcam there).
I'll try to be as specific about my work-flow as I can and I've posted the photos of my FCP and Compressor settings below.
    30 Minutes. Super 16mm.
    2K DPX Scans -- > Graded In Color --> Pro Res 4444 23.976 --> Sent To Compressor --> Mpeg 2 + AC3 --> Build & Format With DVD Studio Pro
I set blue compression markers at the start of each Smoothcam clip.
I've recompressed my footage without Smoothcam as well - with the same end result.
I've sent my timeline to Compressor and used both the 5.5-7 VBR setting and the 6.5 CBR settings (with everything under Frame Controls set to the highest quality).
(I've also used the 6.2-7.7 built in settings with the ninety-minute high quality preset).
I am using Sony DVD-R disks. 16X/1X. When I play them in my PS3, the film freezes at different points in the first two-three minutes - then skips ahead exactly to the same point in my film - about halfway.
I've set Chapter markers and it skips to the halfway one; from there it plays fine.
    1. I wanted to ask if I should maybe export my entire sequence first through FCP (an .mov file) and try Compressing that?
(I've done this and the result is still the same)
    2. Should I set it to Pro Res 422 HQ first?
(I've done this and the result is still the same)
    3. Perhaps I should just try to Compressor with the 90Min-HQ setting without changing anything?
(I've done this and the result is still the same)
    4. Should I remove the Smoothcam?
I'm currently compressing the entire sequence void of all Smoothcam.
When I bring the files into DVD Studio Pro, I see under preferences that Studio Pro also has VBR settings. Do those have any effect on my DVD encode? There is no CBR there - only VBR set from 5.5-7.
    5. Is there anything I'm doing wrong with regards to my workflow? There are several options that may be causing this; I'm not sure if its the progressive footage to interlaced standard definition disk, or modifying field dominance, gop structure, etc.
Any help would be greatly (that's greatly) appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Boris

My first impression is you're trying to make this too hard...
You have a high quality timeline which is downconverted to 1080, no problem. Once rendered, SmoothCam
should not represent a problem. If anything, SmoothCam will reduce the sudden movement that can cause problems. Any scenes where you have a high rate of change per frame (like in an explosion or a background of leaves flapping in the wind) should be marked with compression markers.
Export as a QT movie using sequence settings (include markers for DVDSP) so you have a completed source file for compression. I'm not aware of anything that will improve the quality beyond what is in the timeline, so current sequence settings are fine. Test this for playback issues.
If you are having playback problems with the sequence after export and compression, the most probable cause is excessively high bandwidth requirements. Try using the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes preset. It generally produces a very good quality product. Any attempt to increase the quality will likely increase the bandwidth requirements that are the probable cause of the skipping.
While Sony is a big name, their DVD substrate is only mediocre. If you think the substrate is a problem, switch to Verbatim or JVC/Taiyo-Yuden.
If you are dissatisfied with the quality of the Compressor output, look into the Cinema Craft encoding products.
    Hope this helps.

  • DVD Studio Pro Won't Launch

When I try to launch DVD Studio Pro 4.02, I get a series of error messages saying that it can't find specific files. These files are from an old project that I deleted, so they no longer exist. The real problem is that it eventually freezes and doesn't open. I reinstalled from the disks, reinstalled the upgrades, tried deleting every project file and all files in the DVD Studio Pro folders and I still get the error messages and the program freeze. Any help would be appreciated.

Solved the problem. I had to clear out all files from the "Movies" folder. Still a bit annoying that the program won't launch without having all of the files.

  • How do I make a DVD that freezes on last shot?

I'm working with Final Cut Studio and am trying to burn a project to DVD that will freeze on the last frame, so that it won't go to black, won't loop and won't go to a menu.
In fact, I don't have time for a menu, I need to create this ASAP to show it to a room of 200 people.
It is an event where, they want the final shot to remain on the screen indefinitely, as a public speaker gets up to ask for donations.
I'm using FC and DVD Studio Pro on a Mac.
Since I will be the one screening it, I'm not concerned about making a menu - I just want to know the quickest, simplest way to create this.
    Thanks a lot.
    John

    Wow!
    Me, too.
    It worked perfectly.
I'm surprised there isn't an easier and more obvious way to do this.
It seems like the type of situation that would be somewhat common - someone giving a presentation who is going to jump up to the podium at the end and wants the logo or some final graphic from the film to remain on the screen behind them for some indefinite period of time.
Anyway, thanks so much for the help!
    You saved me.

  • Importing IMovie File into DVD Studio Pro 4

I used to be able to import the index file from an IMovie project into DVD Studio Pro quite happily.
Today the application freezes on the import progress window, with no files appearing in the asset window.
I have to force quit the application to get out of it.
Can anyone advise how to resolve this issue ?
    Power Mac G5 - Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

If you haven't changed anything on your system, then it would appear that you have one of two things.
Most likely, your preference files have be come corrupt, or second, your Application or application resource file for DVD SP have become damaged.
Try first to toss your DVD SP preferences, if this doesn't do it, then you should uninstall DVD SP and then reinstall with all of the updates before trying again.
If you have tried creating a new project from scratch and the problem persists, then read on.
If that doesn't do it, then there's a very slight possiblility, that there may be an issue with the QucikTime files of the OS, and keep in mind, (this is a very remote possibility) you may have to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS and apps. from the original disks, but only after everything else fails, (THIS IS A DRASTIC LAST DITCH EFFORT.)

  • Color corrections don't get processed when burned in DVD Studio Pro

I am working on an FCP project that has alot of darkened day for night clips. I export using compressor at best quality, and project looks great in viewer in DVD Studio Pro, but for some reason when I burn the final DVD and watch it, all the darkness changes are gone, and the footage is in it's original state. What is causing this? How can I burn a DVD that looks like what I am exporting?? Other thing is that when I burn a quicktime of the same project to a DVD using toast, the color changes remain, and they look more accurate- I thought Quicktime would be lower quality than Compressor?

I have acutaly been using this technique on a recent project, and have a few additional observations:
One is that, even if you use a black background in your menu, and map your button colors to black, not all players generate the overlay colors the same way, and the black patches sometimes appear lighter then the background, particularly on software players, since computers are generating RGB vs. YUV.
Another detail is that when a button is activated, the overlays disappear, and all the button graphics embedded in the background are visible while the player switches to the new menu. I have however used the following workaround for this: Generally players will display a freeze frame of the background of the menu while switching to the jump target, usually the first frame or loop point of a menu with motion assets. By creating each menu as an animation where the buttons fade up in the first few frames, I can create a "clean" background for use as the freeze frame displayed during the switch.
This particular disc hhas a tight bit budget, and lots of menus, and so I am creating very short motion assets (1 second) and setting them to "still" at end. I haven't acutally checked this on a player yet, to see whter the still or the beginning of the asset gets used as the freeze frame, I'll post back with the answer after I have tested it.

  • Old Video Material umuxed on DVD studio Pro 4- wierd issues

    Hi,
I am building DVD Studio Projects from old VHS material, which I imported via MPEG Streamclip, to win quite some time (i.e. ENCODING!!)- A Client submitted the video files on a DVD's (used from a DVD/HDD Recorder, from what I could gather from the menu of the DVD's- plain simple Menus with Sony written all over with).
So far so good, I imported the individual video files as seperate m2v and ac3 files, so that I could "re-mux" the video files with DVD studio pro 4 rather easily. All the client wants is a nice menu presentation along with the video files.
Ok, so, I created the menus, and previewed them in DVDSP4, and one thing is striking me- the videos, although old, they have a few "jumpy" sequences in them (with TV snow for a second or so) and when I build & format the project as an imageon my HD, and play the project in the DVD player in OS X, all of the video sequences "freeze" when any kind of video disturbance (in this case the TV snow parts, etc.), but the sound continues, and as soon as the video comes up normally again, the pictures continues in snyc with the audio.
My (rather uncommon) question is- how do I get the DVD Studio Pro 4 Program to ignore those "interferences" and playback the videos smoothly as it has been with MPEG Streamclip? MPEG streamclip has been playing the videos back- including the Video disturbances.
I might be missing something when importing into DVDSP4, but I just can't figure it out...
Thanks in advance for any help!
Feel free to ask questions, I will try to respond ASAP.
    Cheers,
    Dominique

I'm having a similar problem with my menus. They look very jumpy on a tv screen but fine when I play them (as a dvd) on my computer.

  • DVD studio pro crashing

I've upgraded to 10.4.7 recently. Since the upgrade DVD studio pro 3.0.2
will not launch. I've reinstalled and updated the application but if I launch the application it freezes or crashes straight away.
I've never had any problem with it before, when I was using panther 10.3.9. Can anyone help?
Or do I have to reinstall 10.3.9again. Or do I have to upgrade to DVD studio 4.
I'm working with FCP HD4.5 and it works ok with the 10.4.7 upgrade. It has crashed once as well recently.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 Content installation ends with errors

So I have been trying to install DVD Studio Pro 4 on my G5, but when it hits the Content portion of the install, and hits the DVD Studio Pro 3 Templates, the install stops and spits out an error message saying the installation was stopped due to errors and to try again, or something along those lines. My DVD Studio Pro installation will not complete. I tried repairing disk permissions and restarting several times. Due I have bad media? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you right-click (or Control-click) on the Contents package (which is an alias), and choose "Show original" in the contextual menu, you will open a new window containing all the installation packages, in separate files.
From there, you can install DVDSP 3 templates and transitions, DVDSP 4 transitions, but the DVDSP 4 templates won't install. The file doesn't seem to be corrupted, though: I used Pacifist to look at the .pkg's contents and the verification reported no error. But if I try to extract the files from within Pacifist, the extraction freezes, just like with the official installation procedure. Something is messing up the extraction, and I don't know what it is.

  • Dvd Studio Pro 4.1.0 Text drag with mouse impossible ?

I have found that on dvd studio pro 4.1.0 I find it almost impossible to select text and drag it around the stage with the mouse.
I have tried the same task in dvd studio pro 4.0.3 and it works, I can happly drag the text around.
All I do is create a simple piece of text and try and drag it around the screen
I cannot see that this is anything other than a bug in 4.1.0
    Thanks

My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I'm guessing that may be the problem - however I can Run FCP and the rest of the suite without any problems! The thing is - before I deleted some fonts from my computer, I got nothing when I loaded a template. Now that I got rid of some, the template backgrounds appear before the program freezes. Maybe it's a combination of things? Unless anyone else has a suggestion or two, I'll have to look into a new graphics card.

  • Trouble with Dual Layer DVD in DVD Studio Pro

I am having some trouble burning a Dual Layer DVD in DVDSP.  About 1 out 3 discs are coming out unplayable on multiple players and some are freezing during playback (starting and stopping).  I have not worked with DL DVD's before and was wondering if there is a particular brand that might be better then another or if there are some settings I may be missing in DVDSP.
I am using Memorex Dual Layer DVD+R DVD's, my project is 7.1 GB's, and I am running DVD Studio Pro 4.  Any feedback or ideas would be appreciated.

    >I am using Memorex
That's the most likely cause of the problem.  Memorex is notorious for poor quality.  Try switching to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (now under the JVC brand).
