DVD Studio menu problem

Hi Guys,
I have seen lots of questions all over the net about this issue with no definitive answer as yet. I have always accepted slightly soft or pixellated menu images and text when creating in DVD studio pro but I now have a client breathing down my neck demanding sharp text and overlay images. I have tried .psd files, creating text over tiff, jpeg and png bckgrounds at 300dpi and creating loopable video in FCP to import as a menu background. Nothing works. There is always some element of the menu, usually text added within DVD Studio, that looks bad in normal state and especially bad when in selected state.
Please help. I just want crisp menu pages!

I have found I have had similiar problems with DVD studio pro. Pixelatted text. As you have tried PSD's png, jpegs etc, to my knowledge you are running out of answers.
I have always successfully created sharp text DVD menus with After Effects.
Here's a great tutorial is not familiar -:

hope it helps

  • DVD Studio Pro - Problem with video size

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem with dvd studio pro.
I have a project that I edited in FCP, then compressed to the default DVD setting in compresser, then imported the video as an asset in DVD studio pro. I'm trying to create a SD dvd, and whenever I simulate the dvd, the video plays with some of the left side cropped out. I have text that is cut off because of it. This has never happened before, and I have checked again and again to make sure its all set on SD. I'm pretty new to fcp studio, i'm teaching myself as I go and this is driving me crazy. I have made a bunch of dvd's prior, and this has never happened, so I have no idea what I did to mess things up.
For all I know, the problem may not even have to do with dvd studio, it may be in compresser. I have also played around with that, to no avail.
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks Javabob,
That is a way good idea. While trying your suggestion i stumbled upon the problem, I have no idea why i never noticed this before. When i got to the step of importing it as an asset into dvd studio, i clicked on the video track and the inspector box for it showed up, then i noticed it had a display mode drop down menu set on '16:9' pan-scan. I then changed it to 16:9 letter-box and the simulation video fits correctly onto the screen. I don't really understand the reason why pan-scan blew it up like that, but it is fixed now. I still don't recall ever having to do this before, but oh well. I will pay attention to the inspector window for the videos more carefully from now on.
    Thanks for the help Javabob!

  • Importing Compressed Video into DVD studio Pro: PROBLEM WITH SYNC

    Hello,
This post regards software from Final Cut Studio 3
So, I have made a 2 minute clip in FCP7, exported it, compressed it using compressor, and then opened up dvd studio in order to burn it.
I have made sure the lengths of the audio and video were equal in FCP.
The problem is that when i drag the M2v and AC3 files into the DVD studio pro timeline, The audio is slightly longer than the video track.
I am creating a loop and want to duplicate the tracks within DVD studio to make use of the full dvd....so after i have added the files into the timeline a few times, there is a noticable lag, due to the discrepency between the length of audio and the length of the video.
I have even tried to change the length, under 'duration'in the track menu, but this makes no difference.
    any help much appreciated.
    THanks, Bradley

The looped clip in question is APPROXIMATELY 2 minutes. Infact, the DVDs are for an art installation, with numerous clips all Approx 2 minutes long, set to loop using dvd studio to around 20 minutes. (snip) However the loop is fine tuned so cutting frames to allow for the different frame rates of Ac3 and M2v is not an option.
So far I have only made a test batch, next time to avoid these problems I will Loop the files within FCP7 before exporting and compressing to avoid frame rate discrepancies. good idea??
I'm not surprised to hear that the clips are for an Art installation. I once helped my partner with multiple looped VHSs for a Degree Show & believe me DVDs make life a whole lot easier!
In conclusion I would recommend that you do a separate sound & vision edit, so to speak. Once you have finished your vision edit, lay down the single (compressed) vision clip on a track in DVD SP. Loop it to taste, and make a pencil note of the number of loops. Go back to FCP & duplicate your original final edit (ie the 'lock down') & loop the sound to match. Play out just the complete soundtrack at the new ~20 minutes and encode the resulting mix to AC3. Add it into DVD SP3. Voila! Really this is no different from making a movie; when the sound is going to be worked on by a whole different set of people from the pictures and both added together when complete.
... is there an alternative sound format to export in that is compatible with dvd studio pro that will sync perfectly in the sequence?
Of course uncompressed .aiffs don't suffer from the frame-based problem and are compatible with DVD SP. However using uncompressed sound is not recommended as this can lead to playback problems - especially with DVD-Rs - because of the high bit-rate.
BTW where is the show? Regards, Stedman.

  • LiveType to DVD Studio Menu

I am working on a project that needs to have some text that looks like it is being typed on papyrus and scrolls up the screen on the DVD menu. The DVD contains standard definition NTSC video and the DVD menu in question is set to "Letterbox Pan & Scan".
I have a project that does what I need in Livetype and the previews looks very nice, but when the DVD menu is simulated or built the text looks pretty blocks.
What are the best settings in Livetype/DVD Studio Pro to get this scrolling text to look sharp on the final menu? OR is this a pipe dream? And if so, any suggestions on a better method to achieve this effect with Final Cut Studio?
    Thanks,
    Sean

I have DVD Studio pointing straight to the IPR file and have burnt the project to dvd, but while most of it looks great, the scrolling text is really very unsatisfactory.< </div>
In theory, your method should yield the best possible image. But "blocky" still doesn't tell me much about your objections. It's difficult to know where to tell you to start looking for a solution and you've probably tried these: Try to render the animation in an FCP timeline and export that movie back to DVDSP. Or you can force it to render out of LT and use the Animation codec movie in DVDSP.

  • Bad quality in DVD studio menu page

Need some help I notice that my menus on DVD studio pro are very low quality my video itself quality is excellent while watching the DVD on my regular DVD player

For your Tracks you want MPEG-2 video. But if you use that identical video in a DropZone on your Menu, the quality will be awful. Why? Because on a DVD the Menu is one single video that fills the TV screen. It might look like 3 or 4, etc videos on a background, but it is really just one. Now since DVDs use MPEG-2 video only, and MPEG-2 is uneditable, what happens behinds the sceeen is that DVD SP takes all the MPEG-2 videos on your menu, converts them to QuickTime. Then it combines them all into one single video. Then it compresses it all back to MPEG-2. Compressing compressed video always results in a loss in quality.
So in order to get better video, in FCP you should make 30 second clips of video you want to use, and export out QuickTime movies. Do not compress to MPEG-2. Just bring them into DVD SP and put them in your DropZones.
If you want to get the best video you can, create the entire Menu in FCP (or Motion, or After Effects). Now you have the entire screen as one video, and DVD SP doesn't have to do anything with it.

  • 4:3 & 16:9 on one sequence in FCP5.1/DVD Studio Pro Problem...

    G'day,
In ref to my previous post, I am trying to make a showreel of the short films I have been involved with over the past 2 years, to then put onto a SD DVD.
The first 3 projects were filmed on DV-CAM, 4:3, 25fps, 48k. The next 3 were filmed on XD-CAM, 1920x1080p, 25fps. I have the XD films as quicktime movies (XD-CAM codec), but the other footage I had to rip out of Video_TS folders (ie VOB files).
I used MPEG StreamClip, and saved them as MPEG2 & AIFF files, 16bit Integer (Big Endian), 720x540, data rate 5595.22 kbits/s.
In order to bring both formats together, I created a sequence that was 960x540, using XD-CAM codec. There are thus black bars on the sides of the 4:3 footage, but the XD-CAM footage fills the screen.
Now, the problem really is not so much that process, which appears to have created a fairly good quality compromise between the two formats... but with DVD Studio Pro...
After creating a DVD, I have just checked it out, and the 4:3 footage in the showreel distorts if there is any fast-moving action (pixellation in the area of rapid movement). Looking at the settings available in iDVD, it appears as though my 960x540 has been scaled down to 720x404 (which thus fits the 720x540 interlaced SD DVD preset?...
Would that be the cause of the degradation? Should I go back into FCP and make the sequence
The footage itself (from the VOB file) appears to be ok, as I've included it as well, and it plays fine.
Hope this is coherent... late night and on a buzz from graduation screening night... my film picked up 2 awards, one granting "us" a year's usage of Uni equipment... yay.
    cheers and thanks

    This pic demonstrates the issue...

The viewer shows the VOB file... (I imported one to make sure MPEGStreamclip was extracting ok - there is no difference between the original VOB file, and the MPEG2 file that it creates) The Canvas shows the result.
I know there's a tape-distortion line there too, but it's the very harsh fuzziness created around her arms that I'm curious about.

  • Dvd studio pro problem?

Hi everyone! If you can solve or even try to solve my problem in dvd studio pro i will be very gratefull.
I filmed a wedding on a jvc hm750 camera and edit this in FCP 6.0.6. The total time of the project is almost 6 hours with 7 chapters. I tried quicktime conversion in FCP with a file size 4 gig. when i drop this in dvd studio pro it becomes almost 50 gig. Also tried in compressor best dvd quality 120 minutes on sd dvd, with a file size of almost 12 gig. How can i solve this without losing to much quality on my footage.
What about the chapters in my project? When i import the file in dvd studio pro the chapters are visible, but will dvd studio pro automaticly burn the chapters on dvd? Please help me out, its keeping me busy now for 3 days in a row with no results.

You will need to break up the project in FCP. Set in and out points in your timeline and export the resulting chunks as Quicktime movies with current settings then run them through Compressor.
If you want to do a nicer job create 3 new sequences and put titles at the beginning and end of each segment. You can also break it up into more sequences/discs giving you the possibility to create meaningful parts and not just chop it off at the 2 hour mark.
Not my business but .... I'd cut it down to 90 minutes max. Who's going to watch all that?

  • Installed Leopard and DVD Studio Pro Problems

Just installed Leopard 10.5.6 Box Set and Compressor and DVD Studio Pro will not work properly.
DVD Studio Pro 4 will open a past dvd and when go to burn it shuts down. I also cannot export out to compressor from FCP 5. I already tried the http://support.apple.com/kb/TA47672?viewlocale=en_US
link and it didn't work for either. Any guidance would be appreciated!
    Thanks

Just did an upgrade install. No erase and install which I'm sure is the best way. I just got off the phone with apple and also found this on apple's site.
    Issue or symptom
Compressor/Apple Qmaster versions 2.3 and earlier and version 3.0 are not supported on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
    Solution
Compressor and Apple Qmaster 2.3.1 and later or version 3.0.1 or later are supported on Mac OS 10.5 Leopard. Use Software Update to ensure you have the latest updates.
I couldn't do it even if I wanted to. Time to move on to Intel or FCP 2. Thanks for responding.

  • Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4 built SD video file - Menu 1 screen is WHITE!!

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 with DVD Studio Pro 3 to FCS with DVD Studio 4. I have resolved a number of problems with the upgrade by reading "Apply Discussions", however, I need help with the following: When I import my mpeg2 and AC3 files into DVD SP4, I use the DVD SP4 palette to select an Apple Template for my MENU 1. (I like the "Theater Interior" menu template.) When I view the final product with the DVD SP4 simulator, everything is great including the colors in MENU 1. So, I build my program onto my desktop, the same way I did when I had DVD SP3. Now, the problem begins. When I view the built video TS file on my G5 Apple DVD player, or format it to a standard DVD-R with my pioneer 106D burner and play it back on my in-house DVD player, when the program MENU 1 is displayed on the monitor, it is WHITE in color. The menu is set to times out in 20 seconds. Once that happens, the programs runs perfectly. However, what's with the white menu screen? I can barely make out the buttons. When I click on a button, it operates and the color and program work perfectly from that point. I there an option to get rid of the white screen when the menu comes up? Somehow, when DVD SP4 builds the video file, MENU 1 is encoding with a white background rather than with the colors of the Apple template in use. This did not happen with DVD SP3. Can you help me?
    Ugene

try switching the menu encoding from software to hardware (or vice versa) in your DVDSP preferences and see if that makes a difference for you.

    thanks a lot!

I've run into this before too.
What ended up happening to me, after literally many months of stress and frustration, for it was a huge project I had worked on for a long time. I simply had to just make a new project. Something within my project settings or files had become corrupt. My first suggestion would be to just start again and see what happened. But if you don't want to, try making sure you don't have any hidden unused tracks or buttons. This will upset and make DVDSP pissy at times. If that isn't it, maybe it is your actual final cut exported file. Ask yourself, did you run it through compressor or not (this is not a necessity, but could potentially help), if not then try burning a dvd with another project all together and see what happens. It might help you narrow down your problems, sort of like a check list. If the other project burns, then it is either your DVDSP project (which is my guess), or it is your final cut file, which means you just export again and try again.
    Hope that helps!

  • Dvd Studio Pro crashes whenever usuing a menu using motion video

Im using DVD Studio Pro 2 on a G5. Whenever I try to burn using either a menu template containing video or use a drop zone containing video, the software crashes.
I always use m2V video and ac3 audio created in FC4. Have tried usuing an existing file asset as my target with duration time set as well as separate imported files as the target. All imported assets are in the same folder
On burn, when it gets to the menu containing the video it crashes. If I remove the video from the menu its a smooth burn.
    Any suggestions wouldbe greatly appreciated.

The same problem as Chad's happens to me when running the Chapter 6 tutorial in the Apple Pro Training Series (APTS) book for Motion 3: if you try to set the imported Motion project as a DVDSP background, DVDSP will crash every time.
Max Average's advice is 100% good with the downside being that you lose your ability to roundtrip. If you export your Motion DVD menu project as a standalone QT movie, it will drop in fine and still retains the loop point (a marker preset within Motion). Exporting with the Lossless+Alpha codec gave me the best image in the DVDSP simulator (over Animation+Alpha, Uncompressed 10-bit, and ProRes HQ).
I find roundtripping between FCS2 apps is a hit and miss affair and, generally, just export everything.

  • Creating a menu and overlay from Motion to DVD Studio Pro

I have created a menu in Motion. My menu plays a short video first before the menu choices come up. After sending it to DVD Studio Pro I noticed that when I burned it I could not access the menu options with my DVD player, only when I played it on my computer and used a mouse.
I tried creating an overlay and using that, but because my buttons do not display right away I am seeing one of the overlay icons right from the beginning.
If there is anyone out there with a suggestions on how I can fix this or create it differently so that I don't have these problems, please let me know!!!

Couple of things, first you need to make sure you assign navigation for the buttons, which is why the remote control on the DVD Player did not work, yet you can mouse over in the computer [Assign Navigation|http://dvdstepbystep.com/buttons07.php] and [a thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9134310&#9134310]
As to overlays, buttons will not appear (the highlights) until the loop point of the menu, but if ellements are in the background (video) then they will appear. If you do not want those items (in the background) to appear to the loop point you need to fade it in or otherwise do whatever effect you want in the background video. • Consistent jump from animated menu to a transition clip in DVD Studio 4

    Hi there,
did anyone know a possibility how a consistent jump out to a short transition clip in DVD Studio Pro 4 could be made?
My problem is, that there is a animated video background clip running as loop in a menu. If the button to the next sub-menu is activated a short transition clip should be played. But to get a consistent and smooth transition between the menu an the clip, the jump out should be done when the video is at the loop point. Only there the end and the start frame of the following transition video are equal.
I have searched solutions and tried different scripts but did not figure out any one with the expected function...
Did anybody have solved a similar problem before, or is there maybe a simple solution for it?
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for reply to it.
Just to be shure...is there no way that when a user presses the button at any time, that I could trigger the jump to the next menu or clip to a fixed point (best the loop point) of that menu.(maybe by a GPRM used as counter)
A delay time between activating the button and the next action is the result and would be depending on the length of the animated menu. But that's OK if at the end a good transition will come up.
