DVD Studio Pro 4 USE WITH EXTERNAL DVD BURNER??

Hello
Looking at buying DVD Studio Pro 4 for my mini but apple have just stated it will not install unless my machine has a superdrive. We've got an external firewire DVD burner and i've read mention of other versions of DVD Studio burning through externals so how come we carnt use DVD Studio Pro 4 with an external DVD burner?
Has anyone tried an external DVD burner with DVD Studio Pro 4 ?
Cheers

This issue isn't external drives, it's the mini, and installing the program.

The specs do not seem to require an internal superdrive.

Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • Is this now where to ask DVD Studio Pro questions?  If not, please let me know where.  Here's my question:  Using DVD Studio Pro 3, when trying to burn a disc which is 4.5GB, I get error message "Not eough disk space in target folder".  What to do?

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I need to make a master DVD that can then be duplicated in bulk as a single layer disc.  This surprises me because I tried burning a different DVD project that has worked in the past which is also 4.5 GB and now I could not burn that either.  I also reencoded some material to get the new project down to 4.4 GB but it still would not burn.  Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Does iDVD and DVD Studio Pro use the same encoder?

I have a video I shot in 1080p and it looks great on screen. When I use iDVD to make a quick playable DVD of it (as i have done with many other projects) I'm not happy with the results. It is only about 8 minutes long so there shouldn't be issues with extra compression to get it to fit on the disc.
So I'm thinking of redoing it in DVD Studio Pro, but won't bother if they both use the same MPEG-2 encoding methods. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

Videodude, Compressor isn't necessary since iDVD will do the compression for you. But I wasn't happy with the standard def quality I was getting so Mish recommended using manual settings in Compressor and exporting the MPEG2 files needed to burn to DVD. Since Compressor created the files I used DVD Studio Pro to master my DVD.
You should be able to burn a HD disc through iDVD if you have a BlueRay burner. But keep in mind that not everyone has BlueRay and the discs aren't cheap. Be a shame if you handed out discs that no one could use.
As a side note, I used Mish's advice and am really happy with the quality of video I'm getting now. I can only guess that iDVD over compressed the video so it could squeeze two hours on a DVD, even though my video was only 10 min.

Start by using this to make sure your assets really fit on the disk:

  • DVD Studio Pro: is it possible to burn unusual resolution video on DVD?

    Hello All,
    FCP 0.6,
    DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1
    Compressor 3.0.5
I have a short that has a resolution 1920 x 650 px (it is a split screen video). I am trying to burn it to DVD by using DVD Studio Pro. I tried to export the film from FCP by using Compressor. I customized the DVD Best quality: 90 min setting to "letterbox the area of source" in "Geometry" tab, but the result looks like the resolution is not preserved but conformed to the DVD and the image looks squished. I know I have long trip on this subject but I would love to learn if this is at all possible.
I know of software called: Popcorn from Roxio that supposedly burns anything into DVD. I dont know if I should bother installing and trying..?
Should I experiment with Anamorphic DVD (does a standard DVD player read those)?
    Please help and thank you,
    Izabela

The short answer is, unfortunately, no.  The DVD standard is 720x480, either 4:3 or 16:9 anamorphic.  If you do the math, you'll note you'll be looking at a LOT of black screen as you interpolate the 1920 down to 720, even if it's anamorphic.

  • Installed Snow Leopard, now DVD Studio Pro won't build or burn a DVD

I eagerly upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard, but since installation when I go to burn a DVD with DVD Studio Pro, immediately it gives me this error message:

  • DVD STUDIO PRO WON'T LET ME BURN

    HI,
I'm trying to get help with this problem.  It seems that the cash in DVD SP is filled up.  It's not allowing me to burn any DVD's.  It's telling me there's no room.  But I don't know how to empty the files.  i went into my HD's and emptied everything I could, old projects, but it's not freeing up any space.  What should I do?
I would appreciate someone getting back to me.
    Thanks so much.
    Andy

Open DVDSP and go to the Preferences, Destinations tab. This will give you the path to your cache. I think the default is in the User Libeary>Caches>DVD Studio Pro
Don't be amazed if this doesn't do anything for you...  in the 9-10 years I've been using DVDSP I've never seen this message and I've never emptied the cache.
This sounds to me like the error message we used to get when one of the drives in the system is very close to full. Even if it was not in use it would force the error unless you dismounted it.
If (when?) the error comes back, get a screen shot of it and post it here, please.
    hope this helps

  • Importing Compressed Video into DVD studio Pro: PROBLEM WITH SYNC

    Hello,
This post regards software from Final Cut Studio 3
So, I have made a 2 minute clip in FCP7, exported it, compressed it using compressor, and then opened up dvd studio in order to burn it.
I have made sure the lengths of the audio and video were equal in FCP.
The problem is that when i drag the M2v and AC3 files into the DVD studio pro timeline, The audio is slightly longer than the video track.
I am creating a loop and want to duplicate the tracks within DVD studio to make use of the full dvd....so after i have added the files into the timeline a few times, there is a noticable lag, due to the discrepency between the length of audio and the length of the video.
I have even tried to change the length, under 'duration'in the track menu, but this makes no difference.
    any help much appreciated.
    THanks, Bradley

    Bradley Zero wrote:
The looped clip in question is APPROXIMATELY 2 minutes. Infact, the DVDs are for an art installation, with numerous clips all Approx 2 minutes long, set to loop using dvd studio to around 20 minutes. (snip) However the loop is fine tuned so cutting frames to allow for the different frame rates of Ac3 and M2v is not an option.
So far I have only made a test batch, next time to avoid these problems I will Loop the files within FCP7 before exporting and compressing to avoid frame rate discrepancies. good idea??
I'm not surprised to hear that the clips are for an Art installation. I once helped my partner with multiple looped VHSs for a Degree Show & believe me DVDs make life a whole lot easier!
In conclusion I would recommend that you do a separate sound & vision edit, so to speak. Once you have finished your vision edit, lay down the single (compressed) vision clip on a track in DVD SP. Loop it to taste, and make a pencil note of the number of loops. Go back to FCP & duplicate your original final edit (ie the 'lock down') & loop the sound to match. Play out just the complete soundtrack at the new ~20 minutes and encode the resulting mix to AC3. Add it into DVD SP3. Voila! Really this is no different from making a movie; when the sound is going to be worked on by a whole different set of people from the pictures and both added together when complete.
... is there an alternative sound format to export in that is compatible with dvd studio pro that will sync perfectly in the sequence?
Of course uncompressed .aiffs don't suffer from the frame-based problem and are compatible with DVD SP. However using uncompressed sound is not recommended as this can lead to playback problems - especially with DVD-Rs - because of the high bit-rate.
BTW where is the show? Regards, Stedman.

  • Quality of DVD Studio Pro using Compressor vs iDVD

Sorry to repeat the question below, which I have also posted under DVD SP...I thought that perhaps someone watching Compressor would also have input.
I have been trying to obtain a DVD output with DVD Studio Pro where moderate speed pans don't jerk. Oddly, I get better results using iDVD. The image in iDVD isn't as sharp, but the quality of movement (pans, tilts) is smoother. My program length is only 20 minutes and I have used compressor to encode outside of DVD SP. The compressor setting was for DVD, 60 mins, best quality. Why is it that a consumer software such as iDVD yields better results in this aspect? What am I doing wrong in DVD SP that results in less than professional results. All input appreciated. Thanks in advance

You are messing around with Compressor settings . . . I guess!

  • Dvd Studio Pro on formats and wont burn.

I created a menu on dvd studio pro and when I try to burn it, it only goes through the process of Formatting and it finishes. I cant play it on any dvd player, I'm pretty sure thats because its only formatted and not burnt. I cant seem to get it to burn. Any suggestions?

    Wikileak:
It works even though it doesn't work.
While the display of colors in the pop-up menu is broken under Mac OS X 10.9, the palette is still there and works for setting colors.  Choosing the first blank spot in the Color pop-up menu sets that first color in the palette, choosing the second blank spot on the Color pop-up menu sets the second color in the in the palette, etc.  Of course, this was sooooo much easier when the Color pop-up menu displayed color swatches as expected.
If you click the "Edit Palette" button at the bottom, the colors in the Edit Palette dialog box from left to right correspond to the Color pop-up menu from top to bottom.  So, the color in row one, column one of the Edit Palette dialog will be the first blank in the Color pop-up list.  The color in the row one, column two will be the second color in the pop-up list and so forth.
I set the colors for a title in the Edit Palette and take a screen shot, then reference that while using the Color pop-up menu.
If your machine will boot 10.7.5, an alternative is to create a startup volume just for setting the colors and switch to 10.9.5 for finishing the disc.

  • DVD Studio Pro - Problem with video size

    Hello all,
I'm having a problem with dvd studio pro.
I have a project that I edited in FCP, then compressed to the default DVD setting in compresser, then imported the video as an asset in DVD studio pro. I'm trying to create a SD dvd, and whenever I simulate the dvd, the video plays with some of the left side cropped out. I have text that is cut off because of it. This has never happened before, and I have checked again and again to make sure its all set on SD. I'm pretty new to fcp studio, i'm teaching myself as I go and this is driving me crazy. I have made a bunch of dvd's prior, and this has never happened, so I have no idea what I did to mess things up.
For all I know, the problem may not even have to do with dvd studio, it may be in compresser. I have also played around with that, to no avail.
    Thanks for the help!
    Thomas

    Thanks Javabob,
That is a way good idea. While trying your suggestion i stumbled upon the problem, I have no idea why i never noticed this before. When i got to the step of importing it as an asset into dvd studio, i clicked on the video track and the inspector box for it showed up, then i noticed it had a display mode drop down menu set on '16:9' pan-scan. I then changed it to 16:9 letter-box and the simulation video fits correctly onto the screen. I don't really understand the reason why pan-scan blew it up like that, but it is fixed now. I still don't recall ever having to do this before, but oh well. I will pay attention to the inspector window for the videos more carefully from now on.
    Thanks for the help Javabob!

  • Output Audio from DVD Studio Pro works on some DVD's but not others

    Hello All,
Would really appreciate any help here.
My project in final cut pro 6 has audio and it plays fine on the computer as well as the dvd studio pro simulator. I send the final cut pro file to compressor and then to dvdsp to burn. Everything works fine except when I play it in some dvd players I get no sound. I have another dvd player that plays everything with no problem. This is a big problem as I can't determine what kind of player a client has.
Is there something I need to fix in final cut pro, compressor or dvdsp?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any help anyone can provide.
    Please help. Thanks

    Hi
What audio format did you use: AIFF or AC3?

  • DVD studio Pro compatibility issues in DVD players?

    Greetings folks,
I thought I was done burning DVD's with DVD studio pro of a dance reception I taped last month.   Only tested my product on MAC machines.  When I got a call from the client they said they cannot get them to play on their windows 7 machines.  Is there a certain type of codec/reader they should download?
Or does it sound like I need to bust out the burning discs again?  If that is the case where is the best tutorial for formatting discs so they will play in basically every machine?
    thanks,
    Mike

First make sure you didn't inadvertently burn an HD DVD.  HD DVDs will play in most later model Macs, but not in DVD players or Windows computers.
If that wasn't the issue, ask the client which DVD player software they were using.  Windows Media Player is a terrible app for playing burned DVDs - they need to use an actual DVD player app like WinDVD or Cyberlink's PowerDVD.
