DVD Studio Pro 4 - Warning Red & White Checkerboard

I am new to using DVD Studio Pro and I have a problem in that a red and white checkerboard appears in the middle of my video track and chapters. It must be a warning but I cannot find any reference to it. maybe I have a setting wrong or something. Any ideas?

OK - let's go a step at a time...
Create a new project, add the template to the menu and at least a .pict file to track one, but don't connect the menu and track... and do nothing else. Build that and open it with DVDPlayer. Does the menu show as it should?
If so, add the drop zone items, build that and open it with DVDPlayer... is it still showing?
If so, add the proper track assets and connect a menu button to the track... build and check again.
By using a process of elimination you should find the problem.
Using the same project and simply deleting the assets from the menu may not give you the result, unless you also delete the PAR folders that DVDSP has created (look in the folder where the assets are - or in the MPEG folder that DVDSP creates... they'll be around there somewhere unless you have changed the location in your preferences 'Destinations' settings).

  • Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4 built SD video file - Menu 1 screen is WHITE!!

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 with DVD Studio Pro 3 to FCS with DVD Studio 4. I have resolved a number of problems with the upgrade by reading "Apply Discussions", however, I need help with the following: When I import my mpeg2 and AC3 files into DVD SP4, I use the DVD SP4 palette to select an Apple Template for my MENU 1. (I like the "Theater Interior" menu template.) When I view the final product with the DVD SP4 simulator, everything is great including the colors in MENU 1. So, I build my program onto my desktop, the same way I did when I had DVD SP3. Now, the problem begins. When I view the built video TS file on my G5 Apple DVD player, or format it to a standard DVD-R with my pioneer 106D burner and play it back on my in-house DVD player, when the program MENU 1 is displayed on the monitor, it is WHITE in color. The menu is set to times out in 20 seconds. Once that happens, the programs runs perfectly. However, what's with the white menu screen? I can barely make out the buttons. When I click on a button, it operates and the color and program work perfectly from that point. I there an option to get rid of the white screen when the menu comes up? Somehow, when DVD SP4 builds the video file, MENU 1 is encoding with a white background rather than with the colors of the Apple template in use. This did not happen with DVD SP3. Can you help me?

try switching the menu encoding from software to hardware (or vice versa) in your DVDSP preferences and see if that makes a difference for you.

  • LiveType Credit Roll Text Blurry Shaking in DVD Studio Pro Completed SD

I first created text scrolling directly from inside FCP. The texts appear shaking/blurry in the exported MOV. After trying different font family/size but still getting the same bad result, I did more research. I then created the credit roll in LiveType, imported that into FCP. This time, the exported finished MOV looks great on computer. I thought this is the right fix but after I got everything done in DVD Studio Pro and burned a SD to test on my 50" screen SONY, the credit roll part is again shaking and blurry!! This really drove me nuts!! Well, other texts that I created both in FCP and LiveType appear just fine!! I am trying to export the credit roll texts part as self-contained mov then import back to FCP but really suspect this will fix the problem.
That part of rolling credit texts were shaking in DVD Pro simulation but I thought that's only becuase it was not the final product. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
p.s. I spent the past few hours googling and tried different methods but still had no luck...:(
    Thanks in advance!

Ok...I just export a MOV with ONLY the credit roll encoded using QuickTime conversion, change the compression type to Uncompressed 8-Bit 4:2:2 which was supposed to retain the graphic/text quality better than normal setting. The completed credit roll still look shaking, however. It's white text on black, yeah I know not the best combo but there must be a way to get the text to not shake/blur...no?
    Please help, if anyone could.
    Many thanks...

  • Blurry Text from DVD Studio Pro

Hello, I've created 4 'slide show' type presentations in motion 2. Project settings are:
    Width: 1360
    Height: 768
    Bit Depth: 8 Bit
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720, 1440x1080) 1.33
    Field Order: None
    Frame Rate:59.94 fps
    Render Settings:
    Motion Blur: Samples: 8
    Shutter Angle: 360
    Output: Antialiasing Method: Best
I've tried many many compression settings:
    MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16/9.m2v
    Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC.mov
Importing raw motion files into DVD Studio Pro
All of the resulting dvds burned from DVD Studio pro look pixelated and blurry when played on a dvd player onto a Toshiba 32HL86. Unfortunately its an SD dvd player connectedt to the tv, so not sure if that has a major impace.
    DVD Studio Pro Settings are:
    Project: SD DVD
    Video Standard: NTSC
    General:
SD DVD Menus, Tracks and Slideshows:
    Display Mode: 16:9 Letterbox
    Encoding:
    MPEG-2-SD
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    Field Order: Auto
    Mode: One PAss VBR
    Bit Rate: 6.8
    Max Bit Rate: 8.0
    Motiion Estimation: Best
I am at my wits end, can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm not an expert, but have recently had similar problems with graphics that had text, black lines, lots of contrast, and movement. They looked great on HD but when I made a SD DVD, they were very blocky and pixellated - completely unusable. After lots of experimentation, I've finally got an acceptable dvd. Went back to my original shots - in Final Cut, (I'm not sure if you can do this in Motion) and carefully applied a little Gaussian Blur (.25 to1) to each according to how badly they pixellated. Also adjusted blacks and whites so they weren't so contrasty. Then made my mpeg with Compressor - two pass vbr, 6.8 mbps, best motion estimator. The Gaussian Blur seems to break up the areas that get blocked up and pixelated. SD dvd is such a lousy low resolution medium anyway, that it doesn't seem to result in any focus problems and helped most shots - I've even gone back and applied it to some of the regular footage that was pixellating. It was a lot of work, you may want to see if an expert weighs in on this.

  • DVD Studio Pro won't burn disk

I have a DVD Studio Pro file that used to burn without a problem, but now it won't at all. I found all of the files necessary, but when I click the burn button, I get a warning:
The Build Location folder contains a VIDEO_TS folder(standard DVD content).  You must remove the VIDEO_TS folder from the Build Location in order to proceed with Build/Format of a HD DVD project.
I wouldn't know where to find this Build folder anyway. I am not sure what to do at this point.
    Can anyone shed some light?
    I have a 2010 2.66 GHz Macbook Pro Core i7
    Thanks!

Are you trying to build an HD DVD rather than a standard defintion DVD? I've never tried to build an HD DVD... does that format also use the VIDEO_TS structure?
A simple alternative to finding and removing the troublesome VIDEO_TS folder is to select a new location for the build -- an empty folder on your desktop, in your documents folder, wherever.
Or, if the contents and/or design of the disc hasn't changed since the last time you built it, find the current VIDEO_TS folder and use that to burn your disc rather than building it anew.

  • DVD studio pro will not burn menus PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I have created a project, a DVD with menus and subtitles in 2 languages, yet when I burn the DVD (both using build/format option and build format options separately)the resulting DVD has no main menu, actually it has no menus at all! it goes straight into the DVD film where I can change subtitles language only from the remote buttons. The project compiles successfully but once formatting it gives me two hilghlighted errors in the log (which I gather are the layouts/menus)HERE IS THE LOG (highlighted part is error message):

I have burned another project with menus succesfully..

    Hi
FIRST check that your Play Movie button in your menu has NOT an Auto Action selected that make it plays automatically your movie when the Menu loads. You'll find that setting in the Advanced tab of Inspector. If not . . .
You can try a workaround, no matter that if you have your Menu as First Play it must work. Try yhis:
    - Create a simple black JPG file i.e. in Photoshop
    - Create a Slideshow
    - Add a the JPG to the slideshow, set duration 2 secs
    - Set the Slideshow as First Play
    - Set Slideshow End Jump to your Main Menu
    Build and burn again.

    I'am stuck, can anyonw help!
    thanks a lot!

I've run into this before too.
What ended up happening to me, after literally many months of stress and frustration, for it was a huge project I had worked on for a long time. I simply had to just make a new project. Something within my project settings or files had become corrupt. My first suggestion would be to just start again and see what happened. But if you don't want to, try making sure you don't have any hidden unused tracks or buttons. This will upset and make DVDSP pissy at times. If that isn't it, maybe it is your actual final cut exported file. Ask yourself, did you run it through compressor or not (this is not a necessity, but could potentially help), if not then try burning a dvd with another project all together and see what happens. It might help you narrow down your problems, sort of like a check list. If the other project burns, then it is either your DVDSP project (which is my guess), or it is your final cut file, which means you just export again and try again.
    Hope that helps!

  • Do I need to reinstall DVD STudio Pro 4?

I have two problems with DVD Studio Pro 4 that apparently have no answers in the manual:
    1) Some (many) of the Apple menu templates lose all of their graphics when I drag them onto the menu window. I might choose, say, "Frames Cover" and drag it onto the menu window, but instead of the graphics in the thumbnail on the palette, what I get is a box with a gray arrow where the drop zone is supposed to be, a white background, no colors, nothing. Some of the templates come over normally, but I am really limited in my choices - about 50% or more have no graphics when dragged or applied onto the menu window. Is there some configuration setting I don't know about to fix this?
    2) Assuming I have one that comes into the menu window OK, the buttons do not display the active/selected/resting states when I click on the three little icons at the bottom of the menu window to see the display in each state. The buttons become "active" only when I click on them with the mouse, but I am unable to check their "state."
I burned a finished project to a DVD only to find that the buttons would not show a selected state with the remote control and so, of course, I was unable to select anything.
Very frustrating. I wasn't expecting stuff like this with the Mac which is new for me, it's reminiscent of Windows when I often had to reinstall software that was somehow corrupted.
    Please help.
    Barry

Thanks for the rapid reply. I went ahead anyway and deleted DVD Studio Pro 4 and reinstalled it. When I clicked on a template, the same thing happened. I tried every one of the templates and suddenly realized that the images in the thumbnails in the palette are just samples (including the color in some cases). I assumed that I would get an identical set of images that would then have to be changed. Pretty dumb, huh? I think what threw me is that the very first template I used is the one with the theatre curtain opening and closing, with the heads of the audience at the bottom - it's pretty detailed. I assumed that all of the others would be similarly detailed. OK, lesson learned.
The buttons are another matter. I just cannot get them to display their state. To answer your question about my "built" project burned onto a DVD, yes, if I press the "enter" button on my DVD remote, it begins playing a selection. I have a special problem with this particular DVD, as it contains the same movie four times: I was trying to determine the differences between an HDV movie exported as a 1920 X1080 format, secondly as a 720 X 480 format, thirdly as a 1440 X 720 format, and finally as a 720 X 480 anamorphic format. So in this case, I have no idea which of my four "results" is being shown on the TV as I don't know which is the default if that is the correct term. But yes, one of them plays, except I cannot choose it.
I have watched the tutorial included with the software countless times, it appears that all I have to do is select a button and then click on whichever of the three little "state" icons at the bottom, but it doesn't do anything. Only the mouse clicking on the button highlights the button, that doesn't help on a TV set. And it doesn't matter which template I choose, the "state" buttons do not work.

  • Lion kills SoundTrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Color

After installing Lion on my cloned boot drive FCP 7.0.3 runs but SoundTrack pro, DVD Studio Pro and Color return an error message indicating Lion can't run PowerPC programs. They also have a white slashed circle over them indicating they aren't compatible.
This wasn't a widely advertised restriction of Lion prior to its release.
I'm thankful I have a fully operating Snow Leopard installation.

I don't know why you would have the PowerPC-only versions installed on an intel machine?  It's very weird, because they should be Universal. This may mean that you were running those apps using Rosetta under Snow Leopard, but Rosetta isn't installed with Lion. You should just re-install from the FCS3 DVD and the proper Intel versions will be placed in your Applications folder.
I just launched every FCS3 app under Lion and they all work fine, except for Cinema Tools (which unexpectedly quit.)

  • OS 10.6.5 corrupts DVD Studio Pro!!!!!!!! - Why didn't Apple tell us

OS 10.6.5 corrupts DVD Studio Pro. Upgrade to 10.6.5 and you will mess up the drop zones in a number of the templates, in addition to other problems. It's a shame that Apple did not thoroughly test this update in advance. If they did, they would have discovered that it breaks one of their own Pro-Apps.
Contrary to some other postings, Pro Kit 6.0.1 has nothing to do with it. It is 100% an OS 10.6.5 problem. HOWEVER to easily (and relatively quickly) fix the problem, all you have to do is reinstall Snow Leopard and then use the 10.6.4 Combo Updater. That's it . . . problem solved. No reinstallation of FCS necessary, no loss of settings or preferences, the computer and all your other Apps and prefs are not disturbed. Moral of the story: Stay clear of OS 10.6.5.

For those who were totally stuck with a malfunctioning DVDSP 4.22 (an in my case running also OS X 10.6.5 and FCP 7.03, on a MAC Pro), I'd like to share my experience since I had a project due and was not going to be able to deliver. Quite an empty and frustrating feeling to say the least. Here's what I did to meet my contract obligations:
    1) Do not place your mouse over the simulator screen. Doing so crashed DVDSP every time. Instead you can use the screen remote to do some testing of your chapter markers and stories. You can also use your keyboard arrows. (My mouse is a Magic Mouse FYI).
    2. To avoid a compiling error and further test your markers, end jumps, etc., here's what I did:
2a. First I built the project (use only the "build" function). Afterwards, You are going to use only the "format" function. At this point, select as your output destination, the "hard drive" option by using the arrows, next to "output device." After doing this, I was able to open my project with the computer's DVD player and test out my chapter markers and story.
2b. Secondly I of course wanted to burn discs. I burned my disc using Disk Utility. You select the project having the "img" suffix. In short time I burnt 12 copies with no compiler error or other problems.
Well, I made my deadline. I'm glad I did NOT try to go back to a previous Pro Kit as that was beyond my abilities and as Mr. Sass has pointed out, the problem in his opinion is OS 10.6.5 and not Pro Kit 6.01. And before I tackle the possibility of reinstalling Snow Leopard, I will need an idiot's guide as how to do that and be certain that's really the remedy. I'm just an aging liberal arts guy.
I like Apple very much, but this DVDSP problem whatever its origin, forces me to follow the adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and wait until others point out the pitfalls. And for my next project, capture sixty seconds of raw footage and dare to burn a disc. If it works, fine. If not, warn your client.
I'm sure Apple will fix the problem right after Christmas.

  • Why can't I change my subtitles' appearance in DVD Studio Pro?

    Hello there.
So, I'm pretty confused. I created an .stl closed caption file in MovieCaptioner which I then imported into DVD Studio Pro. Understandibly (if not, annoyingly), I lost my original subtitle formatting, including font size, color, font, and the black bar I had originally positioned the text over to make it easier to read.
I'm not trying to change the captions within DVD Studio Pro but whenever I select all (or even just select one individual caption) the option to change the coordinates, etc, is greyed out and I can't select anything. And when I hit command + T and change the font, it doesn't do anything to the overall stream. I just want to make the subtitles larger and add a black bar behind them. Not sure what I'm doing wrong..
    Thanks in advance!

DVD Studio Pro is only capable of authoring HD DVD, which is an obsolete format, or SD DVD. Unfortunately, it cannot do Blu Ray.
If you want HD, you can make a basic Blu Ray directly from FCPX, or from Compressor, using a Blu Ray burner. If your movie is less than 35 minutes long, you could alternatively make am AVCHD red laser disk, using the Blu Ray template with a DVD optical drive selected as Output Device. (AVCHD disks are HD resolution, but are encoded with somewhat less quality than Blu Ray; nonetheless, they look very good.)
The other HD options for disk delivery rely on third party solutions - including Roxio Toast and Adobe Encore.
    Good luck.

  • Compressor footage crashes dvd studio pro 1.5

hi posted this a while back in dvd studio pro forum but there was no answers. I am still getting same problem so thought I would seek advice again.
I am after some advice after I encountered a problem using footage converted with compressor in dvd studio pro 1.5.
If I compresss footage using high quality encode through fcp with compressor option it causes dvd studio pro 1.5 to crash with unexpected error occured, about half way into building either disc or img file .
If I convert the footage using quicktime conversion and guessing bitrate then it works fine .
one thing I have noticed is that the m2v file has a timecode beginning 1 rather then 0 which it has if I convert using the other method, so maybe I have something wrong in compressor settings?
what would be an ideal setting for a 80 minute film?
    I am using fcp 4.5, compressor 1.2.1 quicktime 7.0.3 and os 10.3.9
    thanks

    Hi Adrian
I'm wondering if your build is crashing due to a bitrate spike caused by Compressor - it's reknowned for this. In DVDSP2 and above you get a warning in the log when this happens, maybe 1.5 is somehow missing this. Quicktime's mpeg exporter is a much more stable encoder and doesn't suffer from bitrate spikes. Another thing to have a look at is your audio. If you're using the .aif file that Compressor or DVDSP creates it's a pretty high bitrate od 1.5Mbps. If you re-encode your audio using A.pack to Dolby 2.0 with a bitrate of 192kbps you'll give yourself alot more headroom even with bitrate spikes.
    Hope some of this helps
    Good luck

  • Compressed film to big for dvd studio pro - help

I have a wedding film which is 2 hrs and 6 mins long at final edit... it was a long wedding!
I used the 150min preset in compressor for audio and video but when i add it to DVD studio pro it takes up 5.3gb, far to much for the single layer DVD. Can anyone give advice to get the down so that it is under 4gb and not on the red?

    Hi Allister,
    Did compressor make a AC3 file ?
If not, encode your audio to AC3 and the file size will srink quite a lot.
Here's a good Bitrate calculator to have for future encodes:
    http://www.railheaddesign.com/index.php/software/bitratecalc/
Better to set the bitrate yourself.

  • Line 21 CC in DVD Studio Pro...is there a way to simulate before burn?

Hey all I had a question about closed captioning for a DVD I am producing for a client. We had some TV Spots closed captioned and now the client wants these closed captioned videos on a playable DVD, so they can share them with others (not for broadcast purposes). Our company sent out to get the CC done and they sent as back an .mov that has CC and an .scc file to be used in DVD Studio Pro. I imported the .mov into DVD SP as my asset and on the track timeline i right clicked and added the Line 21 file. But I was wondering if there is any way to check and test to see if this works before I actually burn a dvd. I want to make sure the CC is synced up and working before i start burning 200 copies of this thing and it's important to the client that the CC is working. Does anyone know how to simulate the CC or Subtitles for a Line 21 file?
    -Mike

You DO NOT need to burn a copy of the DVD just to test it.
BTW - If the MOV file has the cc already inserted, you may not need to use the .scc file..
    1. Leave the scc file out of the project and simply BUILD the DVD to you HDD. Use DVD Player to test the DVD build with Closed Captions turned on. In DVD Player v5, the option is under the "Features" menu. In DVD Player v4, the option is under the "Controls" menu.
If the captions were encoded properly in the mov file, then they should now be displayed by DVD Player.
    2. Using Compressor, create m2v & ac3 files from the mov, and use those for the Track in DVDSP. Build the DVD, and test for cc as outlined previously.
    3. If you still don't have cc displayed, attach the scc file to the track, build the DVD (using m2v/ac3 files) and test with DVD Player.
The cc should be displayed in DVD Player unless there was a problem with the scc file, which should have resulted in an error/warning message in the build log.
I highly recommend using files generated by Compressor, as (in my experience) audio will badly drift when mov files are converted to DVD mpeg2 format in DVDSP. Besides, you will have much more control of the conversion, and better results from compressor generated files. Also, a rebuild with m2v/ac3 files will only take a couple minutes as opposed to several hours when using an mov.
    Good luck

  • DVD Studio Pro WMP11

    HI All…..
I authored a DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4.1.2. The DVD plays fine on Macs, on DVD players and on WIndow Media Player 12, but on Windows Media Player 11 it plays no sound unless additional codec(s) are installed.
Does anyone have a workaround for this problem *other than* installing the codecs?
    I've tried re-authoring using AC-3 2.0, AIFF 44.1 and 48, Dolby 2.0, and uncompressed, no change.
Some DVD duplication houses said it might help if I author the DVD on PC hardware. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

The trouble with many Windows installations are that the file associations are set for WM Player to play every kind of media which is stupid
The DVD drive for each PC will have a dedicated DVD player installed for this specific purpose, you should use that,  examples are; Roxio Media Player - Sonic - Cyberlink Power DVD
On all our DVD case wrappers we have a warning notice that users should  only use the correct player and to clode down WM Player if it launches.
Some DVD duplication houses said it might help if I author the DVD on PC hardware. Any thoughts?
Yes, dont use suppliers who dont know what there talking about.
