DVD Studio Pro features in FCX?

DVD Studio Pro being discontinued, does FCX offer (at least) the same features? (Like adding subtitles to an existing DVD)

I don't believe there are switchable subtitle tracks in iDVD. You probably want to look at Adobe Encore.

  • Using a .WMV file in DVD Studio Pro

    Hello All,
I'm so dangerously close to having this whole thing down, that the challenges are becoming excrutiatingly painful.
    I've completed my edit.
I've exported my FCP edit to Quicktime.
    I've downloaded Flip4Mac
I've exported a version of the FCP to a WMV file format.
Now I want to import both assets (QT and WMV) to DVD Studio Pro. I'm trying to make it so there are two seperate versions on the DVD.
As I attempt to link a button to the WMV file, I get the rainbow wheel turning, and it never stops.
So, I guess there are a few questions:
    1. How can I force the rainbow wheel to quit. Until now, I've just shutoff the computer (not a good idea).
    2. Is it possible to combine the QT and WMV files on the same DVD?
    3. Am I totally confused?
    Thanks.

    Hi
She can't play it on her PC, nor can I at home.
Ussually it's a DVD player software matter. Windows Media Player is not intended for DVD playing. Did you use it when it failed? Try with the free and cross plataform VLC Player.

  • Aperture and other Pro Applications ( Final Cut, Motion, DVD Studio Pro )

    Hi folks,
I have bought Final Cut Studio a while back, and have been working with all the tools for a while now ( FCP, Motion and DVD Studio Pro ). Recently I also switched to Aperture to manage / capture / organise my digital photographs ( previously I used iPhoto ).
Now I was wondering how I could use the pictures from my Aperture library in Motion or DVD Studio Pro. When I look at the file Browser, I can easily use some iPhoto pictures, but apparently I can't seem to find anything for Aperture.
What I would like to do is use some pictures from Aperture in a Motion project and also include an Aperture album in DVD Studio as a SlideShow.
What would be the best way to do this ? Do I have to export the pictures I want to use ? Or am I missing something ?
    Regards,
    Stefaan

    Stefaan,
Unfortunately, that type of integration between the Pro Apps is not there (yet). It would definitely be a nice feature to have. We should all send feedback to Apple asking for this feature. For now, you will need to export photos for use in these other apps.
Along the same lines, I would also like to see integration with Aperture and the "iLife" programs. Since Aperture will likely replace iPhoto for at least some of us, it would be nice to be able to use Aperture photos in these apps as well.

  • Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?

Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?
I'm about to start encoding to MPEG2 a very important project that I've edited in Final Cut Pro.
It is vital that it cannot be copied by the client or I could lose a lot of money.
In the past this has never been a concern, but in this case it is very important.
What is the best way to prevent a client/people from copying your DVDs?
Is there anything I can do within DVD Studio Pro or is there anything the Replication house can do at the Glass-Mastering stage?
I'm sure this topic has been covered, but a quick search found nothing.
    Thanks guys.

Common problem but no easy answer. It's simply too easy to get around.
If you want to prevent finished master disks being copied in the same way commercial disks are then you will need to get them made at a duplication facility. Not cheap. You can't do it in DVD studio, it's to do with the disk burner.
On a feature film it is very important to prevent copies of work in progress. What a lot of cutting rooms do is make dvd's with the name of the person burnt in and a copy number. Often a large X with 30% opacity is put in the middle of frame.
This can't stop copies being made but at least you will know where they came from. It also seems to make the person who's name is burnt in take more care.
Sorry but thats the best I can offer.

  • Provide Feedback for the DVD Studio Pro User Manual and Onscreen Help Here

The Apple documentation team for professional video applications would like to know what you think about the DVD Studio Pro 4 Help documentation (available in the Help menu):
    • How often do you use the DVD Studio Pro Help documentation? Under what circumstances do you use it most?
    • How do you find what you're looking for in DVD Studio Pro Help? For example: table of contents, index, skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
    • What do you like most about DVD Studio Pro Help?
    • What is missing?
    • Are there any particular examples of other manuals or documentation that you consider to be good models for future editions of the DVD Studio Pro User Manual and onscreen help?
    • By what method do you usually learn a new application? For example: provided tutorials and manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training classes?
    • What do you think is the most difficult feature/concept to grasp in DVD Studio Pro?
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had with the DVD Studio Pro Help documentation?
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you think we should explore?
    • What size computer display do you typically use to view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch, 17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280 x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?

    • How often do you use the DVD Studio Pro Help
documentation? Under what circumstances do you use it
    most?
I'm working with DVSP for 4 months, so everytime I don't know how to do something I use the documentation. As the times passes I almost don't need it so often.
    • How do you find what you're looking for in DVD
Studio Pro Help? For example: table of contents,
index, skimming, PDF links, PDF search?
PDF Search, but I think is not the best way to search because it shows too much useless results.
    • What do you like most about DVD Studio Pro Help?
It is powerful and easy to use.
    • What is missing?
A way of editing the DVD Project Source Code. Let me explain: in some big projects I just need to change the Jump from "button_1" to "button_2", and to do that I need to find the button under my menus and choose it from a list. If I can just type "2" instead of "1" it will be faster and error-free.
Advancing in this idea, if I can open the entire link list as a Source Code in TextEdit, I can see all the buttons and link all of them without seeking for each on menus.
Today the Connections Tab helps a lot, but I still need to find the button un the menus. With 5 or 4 menus is easy, but sometimes I have 50...
    • Are there any particular examples of other manuals
or documentation that you consider to be good models
for future editions of the DVD Studio Pro User Manual
    and onscreen help?
    The OSX help is great!
    • By what method do you usually learn a new
application? For example: provided tutorials and
manuals, third-party tutorials or books, training
    classes?
Manuals, third-party tutorials and discussions foruns.
    • What do you think is the most difficult
feature/concept to grasp in DVD Studio Pro?
    • What's the most frustrating experience you've had
with the DVD Studio Pro Help documentation?
Using scripts. It could be better with a lot of examples. "To do that, try this one".
    • Do you prefer electronic or print documentation?
In electronic is easy to find things.
    • Are there any other delivery methods or media you
    think we should explore?
    • What size computer display do you typically use to
view the onscreen help? For example: 15-inch,
    17-inch, 20-inch, 23-inch, or 30-inch?
    I use AppleCinema 20
    • What resolution is the computer display set to when
you view onscreen help? For example: 1024 x 768, 1280
    x 854, or 1920 x 1200 pixels?
    1650x1050
    • Do you use multiple computer displays?
    No.

  • Help.. First Time Using DVD Studio Pro!!

OK .. this is my first time using DVD Studio Pro. Before this I have always used IDVD for my Final Cut Projects, but I now need to branch out!
I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I've watched the video tutorials and tried to read the instruction manual, but it's heavy going!!!.. can someone help me get over the hump?
    Here's where I've got to:
    - In my Assets tab I have my two file - Test.mov QT Video File and Test.mov QT Audio file. Both are yellow uncompressed video. I also have a templates folder.
    - I chose the template called brush cover which I can see under the menu tab on a window. If I go to that same window and select the graphical tab I can see a menu 1 and track 1.
    - In my timeline I have dragged my Video and adui assets over and can see them and actually play the movie.
    - What is also worth mentioning is that I can also see the 18 chapter markers that I created in FCP.
    - Now I hit the brick wall!!.
    - Back in my menu I see 8 buttons. In my timeline I have 18 chapters. How do I transfer my 18 chapters over to my menu so that I have 18 buttons each one representing a chapter?
    - I'm sure that it's obvious and a silly question.. but for a rookie like me who's trying to figure this out from scratch it's not easy!
Thanks for any advise!!.. also if anyone has a good 'idiot's guide' for ex iDVD people moving to DVD Pro then I'd really appreciate it!
    Many Thanks!
    Steve.

You can duplicate your 8 buttons menu so many time as you need to include your 18 chapters, creating a simple new button to navigate through Chapter Menu1, Chapter Menu2, etc.
Or you can duplicte&resize buttons to fit more of them in a single menu, but 18 button chapters could be too much for a comfortable navigation.

You can use the Search feature in this forum and almost for sure you'll find any answer you need, in particular for basic stuff.
You can visit Drew13's site [DVD Step by Step|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com] for some good tutorials, and Drew13 uses to stay tuned here to help you too!
And sometimes Google helps too !

  • Line 21 CC in DVD Studio Pro...is there a way to simulate before burn?

Hey all I had a question about closed captioning for a DVD I am producing for a client. We had some TV Spots closed captioned and now the client wants these closed captioned videos on a playable DVD, so they can share them with others (not for broadcast purposes). Our company sent out to get the CC done and they sent as back an .mov that has CC and an .scc file to be used in DVD Studio Pro. I imported the .mov into DVD SP as my asset and on the track timeline i right clicked and added the Line 21 file. But I was wondering if there is any way to check and test to see if this works before I actually burn a dvd. I want to make sure the CC is synced up and working before i start burning 200 copies of this thing and it's important to the client that the CC is working. Does anyone know how to simulate the CC or Subtitles for a Line 21 file?
    -Mike

You DO NOT need to burn a copy of the DVD just to test it.
BTW - If the MOV file has the cc already inserted, you may not need to use the .scc file..
    1. Leave the scc file out of the project and simply BUILD the DVD to you HDD. Use DVD Player to test the DVD build with Closed Captions turned on. In DVD Player v5, the option is under the "Features" menu. In DVD Player v4, the option is under the "Controls" menu.
If the captions were encoded properly in the mov file, then they should now be displayed by DVD Player.
    2. Using Compressor, create m2v & ac3 files from the mov, and use those for the Track in DVDSP. Build the DVD, and test for cc as outlined previously.
    3. If you still don't have cc displayed, attach the scc file to the track, build the DVD (using m2v/ac3 files) and test with DVD Player.
The cc should be displayed in DVD Player unless there was a problem with the scc file, which should have resulted in an error/warning message in the build log.
I highly recommend using files generated by Compressor, as (in my experience) audio will badly drift when mov files are converted to DVD mpeg2 format in DVDSP. Besides, you will have much more control of the conversion, and better results from compressor generated files. Also, a rebuild with m2v/ac3 files will only take a couple minutes as opposed to several hours when using an mov.
    Good luck

  • Importing subtitles into DVD Studio Pro 4 that were created FCP Studio 6

    Greetings!
So in all the DVD Studio Pro 4 documentation, I couldn't find any work flow that allowed you to create subtitles, via *Text or Boris 3D Titles* in Final Cut Pro Studio 6 and then export or import your work into DVD Studio Pro to be used in the subtitle fields... Is that possible?
After painstakingly entering in subtitles for a feature film line-by-line, timing them perfectly to picture and making them look beautiful with crisp-text & a slight drop-shadow... It would be wonderful to import those files (as graphics files? DVD Studio Pro can import those...) in our DVD for release, with optional subtitles-- Instead of making/encoding 2 versions; with & without subtitles.
What is the best way to export these files, created for the film subtitling in *Text or Boris 3D Titles* so that we can import them into DVD Studio Pro 4 subtitle tracks... Could they be exported with an Alpha Channel so that the background is transparent? And will this then be excepted into DVD Studio Pro 4 to be placed in the subtitle fields?
Please help us conquer this seemingly-necessary procedure... I would really hate to think that to achieve this task we'd have to re-enter, re-design & re-time ALL subtitles to make our DVD... All of your suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason

OK-- I love that I've found a way to answer my own question on this forum (but actually I must credit my buddy James for finding out about 'TitleExchange Pro') It looks pretty cool and should do exactly what I've asked about: Exporting/ Importing subtitles made in FCP to DVD SP...
TitleExchange Pro is a unique tool which makes complicated things simple.
If you ever wished to get your titles out of FCP into DVDSP (or another DVD authoring application), get titles into FCP from another source like DVDSP or STL, or ceate a QT with all your FCP subtitles without the need of rendering (and get automatic selection of language) or just "equalize" your FCP titles TEP will be the right tool.
There's a slight catch but it might be worth it, if this works as well as it states...Cost 135 EUR:) You can download a limited demo version that works for 30 days & 50 titles...If anyone wants to give their feedback on this software, please post it here-- We'd all be interested.
Download & more information about this process at: http://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/
Also, check out this video tutorial on the product... It explains exactly how to do the task-at-hand... http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/finalcutpro/f/mtutorials/6851.html
Hope this finds you all well--

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 Dual Layer Disc Question - Can Files Be Moved from Top to Bottom Layer?

    HI Everyone -
I have authored a dual layer DVD for a feature film with lots of bonus material.  I put the layer break in the least intrusive spot where the frame is already still and there is little sound.  Layer switch is fine.  DVD plays as it should with no problems other than the expected pause during the layer break.
I'd like to have the layer break at a point much earlier in the movie, where it actually goes to black and silence for a moment - a spot DVDSP4 won't let me assign a layer break marker to.  I do understand why.
DVD Studio Pro has the movie on the bottom layer of the DVD, I assume because that is the first track I created.
At this point, is it at all possible to move the tracks around where the bonus features take up most of the bottom layer so the less of the movie is on the bottom layer and I can move that layer break up (without completely re-authoring)?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Upgrade to DVD Studio Pro 4 from version 2?

I'm currently using DVD Studio Pro version 2. I'm soon going to be mastering a commercial DVD for a documentary, and I'm wondering if I should upgrade to version 4. In looking over the version 4 feature set, however, it's not really clear to me what benefit I would get from upgrading.
Is there a good reason for me to upgrade?

Under the hood version 2 is way different from version 4
I like the template and unification of the interface (especially obvious with FC Studio. Other integration with the Studio is also nice.
    BUT...
Don't switch until this project is done. When finsihed you can use te assets to take v 4 for a run but from a business point of view it would be a better "best practice" not to change.

  • Can you buy DVD Studio Pro alone ?

I am wanting to use DVD Studio Pro to author my iMovie or FCP Express movies , and not iDVD . Where / can I buy DVD studio Pro on its own without having to buy Final Cut Studio ?

With the advent of Final Cut Studio 5.1 (Universal), DVD SP is no longer available as a stand alone package as far as I can tell from looking at the Apple Store listings.
I can only suggest that you see if you can buy the older DVD SP 4 (Power PC only) for which the owner has the right to transfer it to you, then use the application DVD to do a FCS 5.1 Universal upgrade for $199.
I had started using DVD SP some time ago (DVD SP1, and kept current), so I was able to do the whole upgrade deal pretty painlessly.
I also suggest using either FCX or FCS "feedback" to comment on the upgrade policy. This post neither endorses nor criticizes it, I am just telling you how it works, to the best of my knowledge.

  • DVD Studio Pro: Which DLT drive?

    Hello,
I have DVD Studio Pro 4.0, and I plan to do the crossgrade to FC Studio Universal. I expect that I'll have need before long of a DLT drive to send tapes to duplication houses for DVDs that include features they can't get off a DVD-R. So, I was wondering if anyone could offer opinions on the least expensive (even refurbished) DLT drive with that primary purpose in mind? I could imagine, at the same time, that I might want to use DLT to back up project files, once they're 'finished'. So, maybe something with a larger capacity, I don't know.
    Thanks for your input!

I was wondering if anyone could offer opinions on the least expensive (even refurbished) DLT drive with that primary purpose in mind? I could imagine,
Some of the old Quantum Drives are nice and can be found inexpensively (you will need a SCSI Card) For the most part I find the only reason to have a DLT Drive at this point is for DLTs for DVDs, the speed and cost is not worth it.
As to backing up onto DLT, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2061706&#2061706 has some more of my thoughts

  • Please, suggestion about final cut x, dvd studio pro, sound track and color

what to do now, final cut studio cannot exist in same partition of fc x, but at same time fcx does not have anymore dvd studio pro, color and soundtrack, is it replacing the 3 programs? are you really satisfied of it?

Try building the project to your desktop and then open the Video_TS in the Mac DVD player application.
How does it play/sound?  This application is the best way to see and hear how your burned DVD should play vs. just using simulator and burning.
Just to clarify- are you taking your FC QT file into Compressor and creating a MPG-2 and AC3 file or are you bringing your FC QT directly into DSP?
What codec are you exporting from FC? ProRes422, DV, H264?
Open the FC QT in QT and apple+I to see this.
What does it say for audio?

  • Motion 5 and DVD Studio Pro

I apologize if this question has already been answered somewhere else, but I am wondering if Motion 5 will work with DVD Studio Pro 4. I have been working with both programs for years (as a hobby) and have enjoyed increasing my skills in Motion. I do a couple big projects a year, so I definitely don't do this full-time, although I'm hoping to change that. Although I had the entire FCP suiite, I only really used Motion. My motion program was pretty out-of-date (I think it was 2.1, although it did what I needed it to do) and stopped working properly when I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Before, I would just create my project in Motion, bring the motion document into DVDSP, add audio that I created in garage band, and burn to disk. I just bought Motion 5 and am learning a lot of new skills. However, when I imported a short Motion 5 document into DVDSP to see what happens, it just shows a purple still saying "Media Missing in Motion File." So, I guess there are 2 questions. Am I going to have to export my Motion files out as some sort of quicktime video to then be able to use in DVDSP (and what will that do to the quality)? Or am I going to have to get FCPX? And if I do get FCPX, I have read that the burn features are pretty limited. Any hopes that they're going to be updating DVDSP?

I just tried a Montion 5 (clip) in DVD Studio Pro 4 and it doesn't work. A Motion 4 (clip) worked just fine. You're going to have to export the Motion 5 clip as a Quicktime and import that into DVD Studio Pro 4.

  • MP3 audio cd's and DVD Studio Pro???

I need to know if DVD Studio Pro can be used to author cd or dvd programs containing mp3 audio tracks only along with graphics for menu pages. If not, is there another software program for Mac that will do this? I am working on creating a cd product featuring the narration of the Bible in mp3 format and want to create an authored cd with title pages and button selections, auto-run, etc. I would appreciate receiving any information anyone can provide. If desired, send to [email protected]

Thanks, Chris, for your response. If I understand correctly, mp3 tracks are not compatible with DVDSP as mp3. As I have looked elsewhere on this subject I've learned my primary objective is to create a cd with autorun function and would like to know if there is an apple software program that offers that feature using mp3 tracks and some graphics-menu page, title page, etc. So far, I have determined that there is none and will have to go with one of the Windows options using a pc.
