DVD Studio Pro quits unexpectedly

Here is the conversation I've had under OS X Mountain Lion that I was suggested to post under Final Cut Studio hoping someone might be able to help me here:

Whenever I click on Font Panel button inside Preferences to change subtitle fonts, the wheel starts turning for a while until DVD SP shuts itself. It's the same with Menu Button and Text Fonts. There's no trouble with changing any other preferences though. Deleting DVD SP with all the preferences etc. and reinstalling it did not help either.
I ignored this and created a project using the compressed mpeg2 media converted inside Compressor with DVD Best Quality 90 minutes. The media used was H264 PAL. Subtitles in the project are Belle-nuit graphic files and menus are PSD. It runs through fine until the end. After finishing all the build process, instead of completing, DVD SP 4.2.2 quits again which is not unexpected to me anymore after my 5th attempt.
I begin to suspect if this may be a compatibility case as I have the most recent technology imac.
Hoping that I made myself clear enough, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Maybe my story will help You...
just after upgrade to Snow Leopard (new disk for system, users, settings and apps transferred from old system) DVD SP quits when i tryied to choose for example another location for my build.
None of these standard task helped:
repair permissions
restart
new user
delete preferences
reinstall DVDSP...
And below is what has helped:
1. Download ProKitUpdate7.0
2. Download newest Pacifist
3. Open package ProKitUpdate7.0 with Pacifist
4. Install package ProKitUpdate7.0 with administrator privileges with reaplace option enabled for all.
5. Restart Mac
Now DVDSPro works as usual.

Thank you very much for your help and apologies for my late reply, I've been quite busy recently.
The computer I'm using is newly bought iMac with OS X 10.8.2. A newer version of ProKitUpdate was already on my computer when I tried ProKitUpdate 7.0. Your solution doesn't seem to apply to mine but thank you for your kindness.
But I didn't give up and deleted Final Cut Studio 3 completely with FCS Remover, did the verify and repair thing in safe boot mode and reinstalled FS3 again. It's still the same.
I don't think there is anything I left out after reading all the web pages, searching all forums. If it doesn't get interfered by other installed programmes such as After Effects CS5.5 or Photoshop CS5.1, which I don't know how to find out, then it is the compatibility problem. I can't think of anything else. And in this case it was a big mistake buying the newest technology computer as I'm not willing to try out Final Cut Pro X and learn another DVD authoring programme.

If you have a font problem, this tip may help.

I would be optimistic that this will get sorted out OK. Many people are successfully running FCS3 on ML.

Free solutions are the best, although if I have to pay I will, I would prefer to not have to buy an external burner if possible and already know that is an option so please don't give me that answer... thank you for any help you can give

Unless your iMac is still covered by AppleCare, get an external DVD burner.
You can get perfectly good ones from Amazon for less than $40.

  • DVD Studio Pro quits when encoding menus with video

Im using DVD Studio Pro 2 on a G5. Whenever I try to burn using either a menu template containing video or use a drop zone containing video, the software crashes.
I always use m2V video and ac3 audio created in FC4. Have tried usuing an existing file asset as my target with duration time set as well as separate imported files as the target. All imported assets are in the same folder
On burn, when it gets to the menu containing the video it crashes. If I remove the video from the menu its a smooth burn.
    Any suggestions wouldbe greatly appreciated.

    tomd63,
Before you read this remember I am new to FCP and DVDSP. I think I remembered why I couldn't burn the DVD. I did a video for a friend and when I was editing it I put in several markers. I then decided to send him a clip via email of about 30 seconds to see if he liked the theme I set. I did an "in and out" in FCP... made it into a QT then just dragged it into iMovie then sent it from there. Later I thought I would use that same 30 second clip in the intro menu.
My guess now ( having a little more experience) was that the chapter markers left in the 30 second clip screwed things up.

  • DVD Studio Pro 3 unexpectedly quits!

I first noticed this problem when I would add audio to the menu. As soon as I dragged and dropped DSP would quit! Now, anything I do it just quits. Any suggestions on what the problem could be and how I can fix it.

    Hi Katie,
Sorry to hear that. Perhaps you could take a closer look at the original media files (that you're trying to drop into DSP) to see if they're playing correctly (and not corrupted). If they're fine, I'd try trashing DSP's prefs--~Library>Preferences>com.apple.dvdstudiopro.plist--and starting DSP back up again.
    Cheers.

  • DVD Studio Pro Quits when importing Photoshop files. HELP!!!

often when importing PS layered files DSP quits without any warning.
and it does it with the same files, some are ok, others make DSP quit. So the problem should be in the files...
I'm going crazy, since I don't undertand where the problem come from, any help?
    (I use DVD SP 3.0.2)

see what I have to do:
I create a new PS file, and then paste one by one all levels from the original (buggy) one; then import in DSP the new one and everything is fine!

  • DVD Studio Pro Quits everytime I hit simulate.

    Hi,
My DVDSP is doing something weird. Whenever I bring in an asset and hit simulate, the application quits. It does this with every MPEG-2 I bring in. Funny thing,if I save it, and restart my computer it works...Which is unacceptable.
    Any way to resolve this?
    OS10.5.8
Imac 2.8GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
    DVDSP 4.2.1

I use Compressor to create my MPEG-2s. I have used this setting for several years and never had a problem. It is very odd that I need to restart my computer in order to simulate. I am using the MPEG-2 / 6.2 Mbps 2 Pass - Best Quality 90 minutes setting. My movie is only an hour, but this happens on every MPEG-2 I create.
    Thanks,
    Gary

  • Importing IMovie File into DVD Studio Pro 4

I used to be able to import the index file from an IMovie project into DVD Studio Pro quite happily.
Today the application freezes on the import progress window, with no files appearing in the asset window.
I have to force quit the application to get out of it.
Can anyone advise how to resolve this issue ?
    Power Mac G5 - Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

If you haven't changed anything on your system, then it would appear that you have one of two things.
Most likely, your preference files have be come corrupt, or second, your Application or application resource file for DVD SP have become damaged.
Try first to toss your DVD SP preferences, if this doesn't do it, then you should uninstall DVD SP and then reinstall with all of the updates before trying again.
If you have tried creating a new project from scratch and the problem persists, then read on.
If that doesn't do it, then there's a very slight possiblility, that there may be an issue with the QucikTime files of the OS, and keep in mind, (this is a very remote possibility) you may have to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS and apps. from the original disks, but only after everything else fails, (THIS IS A DRASTIC LAST DITCH EFFORT.)

  • DVD Studio Pro Unexpectedly Quit

Every time I hit the burn button, DVD Studio Pro, starts to build and then gives me an error and quits. I tried erasing the plist files and the cache files and starting over but I keep getting the same error. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you. I'm traveling and trying to finish a DVD for a fundraiser that is tomorrow night and DVD Studio Pro keeps quitting. I'm stressing right now.
When I hit the burn button it's builds as usually but as soon as it gets to 100% instead of formatting the DVD Studio screen simply disappears then I get the message "DVD Studio Pro unexpectedly quit, would you like to send Apple a report."
    That's it. Any suggestions?

  • DVD STUDIO PRO JUST QUITS OR FREEZES

I have 3 firewire drives attached and when in DVD studio Pro 2.0, sometimes the programme freezes or simply quits when I am building a DVD
This problem has previously never occurred when on my PowerMac G4 when I had less memory installed.
Should I upgrade to a different version of DVDSP? Or is this simply a matter of having too many external drives attached?

If you qualify, you must upgrade to the Universal Binary version of DVDSP.

Otherwise, it's a full price upgrade

    Any suggestions?

Let's try to clarify some things.
    1. There is no DVD SP 4.5. The latest UB version is 4.2.1. Which do you have?
    2. Did you do an upgrade install of Leopard, or a backup/clone of boot drive and then a clean install. Unless you do the latter, there are issues with the pro apps. And certainly an archive and install is not the way go.

  • DVD Studio Pro  continues to shut down unexpectedly

I have an iMac running Mac OS 10 and my DVD studio Pro continues to shut down whenever I try to open a project. I have no idea how to start fixing this problem and have not found any other forums to be of help. I have a 2 GHz Intel core duo processor with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

    Hi:
What version of DVDSP are you running? You need at least DVDSP 4.1 to run under Intel processors.
You can try this DVDSP: TROUBLESHOOTING BASICS

  • DvD Studio Pro recently updated, not working properly

Sometime it seems it just doesn't pay to update software.
I Recently updated my OS to Tiger and along with it I updated to the latest FCP and DVD Studio pro.
Now in DVD Studio Pro it will not properly read existing projects and when I build a project from scratch it "unexpectedly quits" just when I get going.
Any one else have this problem?

I went thru this recently, after weeks of calling Applecare, trying everything, the solution finally was to completely de-Install DVD Studio (detailed instructions are on Apple support somewheres) and Final Cut (plus all the smaller apps) BOTH. Then re-install everything, appartently there is some shared libraries or something that get corrupt, Applecare was useless btw, (except to point me towards the de-installation docs)... I know it sounds like alot of hassle, but it worked for me! Good Luck!

  • Using Qmaster with DVD Studio Pro OR Qmaster requires FCP on all machines?

    Greetings everyone,
After a few days of tinkering I've finally managed to set up a managed cluster. However, I have a problem (surprise, surprise). When I submit a job to the cluster, Final Cut Pro suddenly opens up on all of the computers being used. I have Final Cut Studio 2 under an academic license, and all copies report that there is another copy running with the same serial number and that they must shut down. They render a few frames before suddenly quitting the job, regardless of whether I leave the message up or OK it away. I've done some reading from this thread which makes it sound like all systems must have a copy of FCP installed, or to use a slightly different method:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=375923&tstart=195
It's a bit upsetting as I'd originally read that systems could aid in rendering with just QMaster installed, and that they didn't need FCP installed. Hence, having FCP open up was unexpected, and I get the feeling that uninstalling FCP from those systems wouldn't help me.
But let me explain what I do normally, and perhaps some of you can guide me.
My work has me converting hundreds of tapes to DVD. Without QMaster, I would import the videos in Final Cut Pro, set chapter markers and in and out points, and then export the video (with barely any processing - an export typically takes 4 minutes on a dual 800 Mhz G4). I'd then import it to DVD Studio Pro, handle the menus, and then do a build and format. That process would take ~2-3 hours per DVD, and that is the part that I'd like to optimize.
The setup is such that I have one dual G5 wired to our hard drives (all Firewire 800), and then four other systems that connect to the G5 to access the HDs through a gigabit network switch. This has worked quite nicely in that it allows systems that only have Firewire 400 to work at Firewire 800 speeds regardless.
I'd originally thought that DVD Studio Pro 4 would automatically be able to process jobs through Qmaster, but I couldn't find a setting for it and it didn't seem to do it on its own. Instead, I was planning to redo my work flow such that the encoding of the video (the most time-consuming part of DVD Studio Pro's build procedure) would be done in Final Cut Pro. Or more specifically, it would go through Compressor. However, as I mentioned above, attempting to work this way causes Final Cut Pro to open up on all nodes within the cluster. As they all have the same serial number, they become unhappy under such conditions. I can uninstall them from the systems as I only ever use one copy at a time anyway, but as I mentioned from the link above, it seems that rendering through FCP -> Compressor will require FCP to be installed on all participating systems.
Does anyone have any advice for what to do? Is there a way to get around having FCP activate on all participating systems, or is there a way to do it directly through DVD Studio Pro (ideally in a manner that wouldn't cause DVD Studio Pro to activate on all participating systems)?
Any advice is much appreciated. The distributed encoding is really the only reason why we upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2, so I'm going to feel rather foolish if this doesn't work out.

A QCluster network isn't designed to distribute Rendering from FCP, rather it's designed to distribute encoding tasks.
As mentioned in that thread you linked to, the best workflow I can think of in your situation is to export Quicktime reference movies from FCP, then bring those reference files into Compressor for distribution to the QCluster for the transcode to MPEG 2 for DVD. There is a wealth of good information in that thread.
In short, if you attempt to use a Cluster to export from FCP, then all of your nodes will need to have separate licenses of FCP. But if you use the reference movie method, FCP is not required for the encoding.
One question for clarification with your workflow, are you logging & capturing these clips then sending them directly to DVD? or are you editing them in a timeline prior to export to DVD?
If you're just using FCP as your Log & Capture tool, then you can skip the reference movie step and just grab the captured clips in your Capture Scratch folder and send those directly to Compressor.

  • DVD Studio Pro 4 will not open after installing Leopard

I had trouble opening my film project in FCP studio 2 but resolved the problem by trashing the preferences. This did not help other programs like DVD studio pro which will not open at all or crashes as soon as it is open. It also gives me strange messages while it tries to open like" Media-application quit unexpectedly." Would re-installing help? I would have to begin with FCP studio pro and then update all the programs again. Is there an easier way to solve this problem? (Leopard is causing other programs to quit unexpectedly but I don't get messages that some part of the application has quit).

So far it seems the advice when going to Leopard is to due a total clean install of Leopard on a clean drive before installing the applications.
