DVD Studio Pro swallows drop zones
Help! I created text as dropzones and placed a key above it with the link function. After this the text disappears never to be seen again. It only occurs in a project which is devellopping since a long time. When I create a fresh menu there is (yet) no problem.
To rebuild all links and menus is a **** of a work. Is this a known buck? I'm working with DVD Studio 2.0.5. Would an upgrade help?
Hi - welcome to the discussions. I think that we need a bit of info about how you are creating things in order to help you work out what is wrong. Drop zones should certainly play video... how are you preparing the video (what format is it in) and how are you creating the menu?

DVD Studio Pro 4. Last one?
While I can find DVD Studio Pro 4 for sale at various web sites, it's no longer listed anywhere on Apple's site. Has DVD Studio Pro been dropped as a product, or is it on hiatus as it gets updated as a universal binary version?
Basically, I'm not real happy with the results Toast 7 gives me encoding my FCE projects to DVD. I've been told by quite a few people that DVDSP creates much sharper final disks (Toast seems to soften my scans quite a bit). With DVDSP, I could then author everything ahead of time, getting a much better MPEG-2 conversion, and then using the "DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS" option instead. Bypassing Toast's encoding process.Hi JP007,
If you are interested in using an older copy of something to get the cross upgrade price, keep an eye out for DVD Studio Pro 4, or any of the other qualified titles. It didn't matter if I could install version 2 on my Mac or not. All I wanted out of the auction was the genuine Apple version 4 update disk. You have to send in the original install disk along with the order form to get the $199 price. -
I exported a video from FCP 7 as a .mov with chapter markers to use in DVD studio pro and it gives me this error:

Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image. -
Sync Issues and Audio Drop-out from FCP to DVD Studio Pro
I have edited a piece in FCP 5.1.4 and all audio/video is in perfect sync. I have been using this program for several years with no issues, until now. Upon exporting with compressor and importing into DVD Studio Pro, the audio is out of sync by 15 seconds and after that first 15 seconds there is simply NO audio, period.
Any ideas? Please send the calvary...tight deadline and the hanging rope is getting shorter and shorter by the minute!
ThanksCould be something got corrupted in DVD SP (preferences). I have had my audio act strangely and playback getting bogged down. Repairing permissions and deleting prefs works for this one for me. Did you do any recent upgrades to the OS or QuickTime?

Is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro?
OK...so here's what I'm trying to find out: is there is a way to export the themes from iDVD to DVD Studio Pro? Or can I build the project in DVDSTPRO and import it to iDVD to build and burn?
I've read several threads here and haven't come across my specific question. If I missed it, please copy me a link. Otherwise, I'd like to use the templates/themes in iDVD with my FCP project.
I was thinking about importing the project from FCP to iDVD. Then, I thought about the markers etc....
So, if anyone had an idea, tip or link, I'm all for it!
Thanks!
ronImporting iDVD Projects and Themes
DVD Studio Pro 4 can import projects from iDVD 3 and iDVD 4. You can import an iDVD theme by using the theme in a project within iDVD and importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. When creating the project within iDVD, you do not need to use the final assets or make a complete project.
Note: DVD Studio Pro will not import projects from iDVD 1, iDVD 2, and iDVD 5. In general, iDVD needs to be installed on the same system as DVD Studio Pro. An exception is if you import an iDVD 4 archive project.
To import an iDVD project or archived project into DVD Studio Pro:
1 Do one of the following:
• Choose File > Open.
• Press Command-O.
2 Locate and select the iDVD project or iDVD 4 archive project in the Open dialog, then click Open.
DVD Studio Pro imports the iDVD project.
About the iDVD Project Import
When DVD Studio Pro imports an iDVD 3 or iDVD 4 project or iDVD 4 archive project, it has standard locations it looks for to find the assets and themes used in the project. This is especially important if the project uses custom themes.
The standard locations that DVD Studio Pro uses are (in this order):
• iDVD project bundle: This is the file created when you save the project.
• [user]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located in your home folder.
• [root]/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is located at the root of your disk.
• /Network/Library/iDVD/Favorites: This folder is on a network system specifically
configured by your system administrator for this purpose. (This is not the same as having a server networked into your computer.)
• iDVD application bundle: This is the iDVD application file that contains the default theme elements.
Note: When you create an archive project in iDVD 4, you can choose to include the themes and encoded files. For the best portability, you should include both options. This results in a larger archive file, but ensures you can take the file to any DVD Studio Pro system and import it without missing assets. If you do not choose to include the themes and encoded files in the archive file, those assets must be available in one of the standard locations.
If your project will have automatically-created chapter index (scene selection) menus based on markers embedded in the video, it can be easier to create these within iDVD prior to importing the project into DVD Studio Pro. This ensures the chapter index menus use the selected theme’s background and include arrow buttons to navigate between the menus.
Important: To ensure all iDVD menu elements import correctly into DVD Studio Pro, you must navigate to each chapter index menu within iDVD before saving the project. This is also true for any menus you add to your iDVD project by clicking the Folder button.
Issues With Importing iDVD Projects
There are some issues to be aware of when you import iDVD projects:
• If you import an iDVD project with DVD-ROM content, DVD Studio Pro does not update the settings in the Disc Inspector’s General tab to reflect the DVD-ROM content. You must manually select the DVD-ROM layout and choose the folder to include.
• When you create a slideshow in iDVD, you can add arrow buttons to each still to provide viewers with an additional method of jumping to the previous and next stills. These arrow buttons are not imported when you import an iDVD project into DVD Studio Pro. The viewer must use the Previous and Next buttons on the DVD player’s remote control to jump between stills.
• The button highlights used in iDVD may look different when imported into DVD Studio Pro. In most cases, the text in the buttons is set to be included in the highlight. Additionally, buttons that use an underline in iDVD will not have an underline when imported into DVD Studio Pro.
• When you import an iDVD project, you may find that the button that is highlighted by default on some menus changes. During the project import, DVD Studio Pro numbers the buttons on each menu and highlights button 1 by default. You can assign any button on a menu to be the default button in the Menu tab in the Menu Inspector.
• If you import an iDVD project that contains a drop zone configured as a slideshow and has multiple slides assigned to it, DVD Studio Pro only shows the slideshow’s first slide in the drop zone.

Do I need to reinstall DVD STudio Pro 4?
I have two problems with DVD Studio Pro 4 that apparently have no answers in the manual:
1) Some (many) of the Apple menu templates lose all of their graphics when I drag them onto the menu window. I might choose, say, "Frames Cover" and drag it onto the menu window, but instead of the graphics in the thumbnail on the palette, what I get is a box with a gray arrow where the drop zone is supposed to be, a white background, no colors, nothing. Some of the templates come over normally, but I am really limited in my choices - about 50% or more have no graphics when dragged or applied onto the menu window. Is there some configuration setting I don't know about to fix this?
2) Assuming I have one that comes into the menu window OK, the buttons do not display the active/selected/resting states when I click on the three little icons at the bottom of the menu window to see the display in each state. The buttons become "active" only when I click on them with the mouse, but I am unable to check their "state."
I burned a finished project to a DVD only to find that the buttons would not show a selected state with the remote control and so, of course, I was unable to select anything.
Very frustrating. I wasn't expecting stuff like this with the Mac which is new for me, it's reminiscent of Windows when I often had to reinstall software that was somehow corrupted.
Please help.
BarryThanks for the rapid reply. I went ahead anyway and deleted DVD Studio Pro 4 and reinstalled it. When I clicked on a template, the same thing happened. I tried every one of the templates and suddenly realized that the images in the thumbnails in the palette are just samples (including the color in some cases). I assumed that I would get an identical set of images that would then have to be changed. Pretty dumb, huh? I think what threw me is that the very first template I used is the one with the theatre curtain opening and closing, with the heads of the audience at the bottom - it's pretty detailed. I assumed that all of the others would be similarly detailed. OK, lesson learned.
The buttons are another matter. I just cannot get them to display their state. To answer your question about my "built" project burned onto a DVD, yes, if I press the "enter" button on my DVD remote, it begins playing a selection. I have a special problem with this particular DVD, as it contains the same movie four times: I was trying to determine the differences between an HDV movie exported as a 1920 X1080 format, secondly as a 720 X 480 format, thirdly as a 1440 X 720 format, and finally as a 720 X 480 anamorphic format. So in this case, I have no idea which of my four "results" is being shown on the TV as I don't know which is the default if that is the correct term. But yes, one of them plays, except I cannot choose it.
I have watched the tutorial included with the software countless times, it appears that all I have to do is select a button and then click on whichever of the three little "state" icons at the bottom, but it doesn't do anything. Only the mouse clicking on the button highlights the button, that doesn't help on a TV set. And it doesn't matter which template I choose, the "state" buttons do not work.

OS 10.6.5 corrupts DVD Studio Pro. Upgrade to 10.6.5 and you will mess up the drop zones in a number of the templates, in addition to other problems. It's a shame that Apple did not thoroughly test this update in advance. If they did, they would have discovered that it breaks one of their own Pro-Apps.
Contrary to some other postings, Pro Kit 6.0.1 has nothing to do with it. It is 100% an OS 10.6.5 problem. HOWEVER to easily (and relatively quickly) fix the problem, all you have to do is reinstall Snow Leopard and then use the 10.6.4 Combo Updater. That's it . . . problem solved. No reinstallation of FCS necessary, no loss of settings or preferences, the computer and all your other Apps and prefs are not disturbed. Moral of the story: Stay clear of OS 10.6.5.For those who were totally stuck with a malfunctioning DVDSP 4.22 (an in my case running also OS X 10.6.5 and FCP 7.03, on a MAC Pro), I'd like to share my experience since I had a project due and was not going to be able to deliver. Quite an empty and frustrating feeling to say the least. Here's what I did to meet my contract obligations:
1) Do not place your mouse over the simulator screen. Doing so crashed DVDSP every time. Instead you can use the screen remote to do some testing of your chapter markers and stories. You can also use your keyboard arrows. (My mouse is a Magic Mouse FYI).
2. To avoid a compiling error and further test your markers, end jumps, etc., here's what I did:
2a. First I built the project (use only the "build" function). Afterwards, You are going to use only the "format" function. At this point, select as your output destination, the "hard drive" option by using the arrows, next to "output device." After doing this, I was able to open my project with the computer's DVD player and test out my chapter markers and story.
2b. Secondly I of course wanted to burn discs. I burned my disc using Disk Utility. You select the project having the "img" suffix. In short time I burnt 12 copies with no compiler error or other problems.
Well, I made my deadline. I'm glad I did NOT try to go back to a previous Pro Kit as that was beyond my abilities and as Mr. Sass has pointed out, the problem in his opinion is OS 10.6.5 and not Pro Kit 6.01. And before I tackle the possibility of reinstalling Snow Leopard, I will need an idiot's guide as how to do that and be certain that's really the remedy. I'm just an aging liberal arts guy.
I like Apple very much, but this DVDSP problem whatever its origin, forces me to follow the adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and wait until others point out the pitfalls. And for my next project, capture sixty seconds of raw footage and dare to burn a disc. If it works, fine. If not, warn your client.
I'm sure Apple will fix the problem right after Christmas. -
Using DVD Studio Pro theater template in Motion: Masking question
I'm wanting to use the video of the theater interior used in the DVD Studio Pro theater menu template in a Motion project. I'm wondering if there is a 'quick and dirty' way to mask out the black portion that appears when the curtains open, which is used as a 'drop zone' in the DVDSP menu (basically, wanting to get the same 'reveal' effect as I would get in DVDSP) or if I have to mask it frame by frame.
Thanks!Yes...except that's what I tried with the curtain earlier today, and what I got was....very strange. Instead of the the transition of shape that I had keyed, I got what was essentially the final set of points moving and warping in a very strange pattern.
I'll try it again (and not be as anal and do every frame...try skipping to every second...or half second, so I don't go completely cold turkey).
Thanks...wanted to make sure I was correct in how I thought it should work. (the art of masking is the one thing that just does not want to sink into this pooh brain of mine...) -
Dvd Studio Pro crashes whenever usuing a menu using motion video
Im using DVD Studio Pro 2 on a G5. Whenever I try to burn using either a menu template containing video or use a drop zone containing video, the software crashes.
I always use m2V video and ac3 audio created in FC4. Have tried usuing an existing file asset as my target with duration time set as well as separate imported files as the target. All imported assets are in the same folder
On burn, when it gets to the menu containing the video it crashes. If I remove the video from the menu its a smooth burn.
Any suggestions wouldbe greatly appreciated. The same problem as Chad's happens to me when running the Chapter 6 tutorial in the Apple Pro Training Series (APTS) book for Motion 3: if you try to set the imported Motion project as a DVDSP background, DVDSP will crash every time.
Max Average's advice is 100% good with the downside being that you lose your ability to roundtrip. If you export your Motion DVD menu project as a standalone QT movie, it will drop in fine and still retains the loop point (a marker preset within Motion). Exporting with the Lossless+Alpha codec gave me the best image in the DVDSP simulator (over Animation+Alpha, Uncompressed 10-bit, and ProRes HQ).
I find roundtripping between FCS2 apps is a hit and miss affair and, generally, just export everything. -

Before you read this remember I am new to FCP and DVDSP. I think I remembered why I couldn't burn the DVD. I did a video for a friend and when I was editing it I put in several markers. I then decided to send him a clip via email of about 30 seconds to see if he liked the theme I set. I did an "in and out" in FCP... made it into a QT then just dragged it into iMovie then sent it from there. Later I thought I would use that same 30 second clip in the intro menu.
My guess now ( having a little more experience) was that the chapter markers left in the 30 second clip screwed things up.

Is there a way to import a theme from iDVD into DVD Studio Pro? I want to use a theme on iDVD called Revolution, but in iDVD it only has one drop zone for pictures. I have seen this theme used with multiple pictures so there has to be a way to do it. I was wondering if you can somehow get that template into DVD Studio Pro for more customization options.

DVD Studio Pro 4 - Warning Red & White Checkerboard
I am new to using DVD Studio Pro and I have a problem in that a red and white checkerboard appears in the middle of my video track and chapters. It must be a warning but I cannot find any reference to it. maybe I have a setting wrong or something. Any ideas?
OK - let's go a step at a time...
Create a new project, add the template to the menu and at least a .pict file to track one, but don't connect the menu and track... and do nothing else. Build that and open it with DVDPlayer. Does the menu show as it should?
If so, add the drop zone items, build that and open it with DVDPlayer... is it still showing?
If so, add the proper track assets and connect a menu button to the track... build and check again.
By using a process of elimination you should find the problem.
Using the same project and simply deleting the assets from the menu may not give you the result, unless you also delete the PAR folders that DVDSP has created (look in the folder where the assets are - or in the MPEG folder that DVDSP creates... they'll be around there somewhere unless you have changed the location in your preferences 'Destinations' settings). -
HUGE PROBLEM with sound in DVD Studio Pro 4
As I imported the soundtrack of the footage that I have (which is about 1h16), the combinaison of my video & the sound is over 4,7 Gig. Therefor, I can't burn it on a DVD.
I exported the audio in a lower quality to finally obtain a size of around 210mb for the sound (which was 844mb BEFORE!!!)
BUT, As soon as I add it to the timeline, the size goes up again to 855mb encoded!!!!!! I even tried which a compressed AIFF file of 50mb and the sound is still encoded to the same size, 855mb!!!
Where and how can I change the encoding of the audio in DVD Studio Pro so that I can lower the quality just a little bit so but my video and the audio will fit on a standard 4,7 Gig DVD!
Thanks!!Drop your aiff files into Compressor, and elect Dolby 2 with -31 normalization no film compression.
I don't know what you mean by "I exported the audio in a lower quality."
Audio must be 48/16 stereo aiff/pcm before it is encoded in Compressor to Dolby 2.
What are your target and maximum bit rates for video in Compressor? Are you export video and audio separately before encoding in Compressor -
Exporting from Final Cut Pro for DVD Studio Pro
In the recent DVDs I've made, the quality seems lower than it has before. I don't think I've changed anything, but I was wondering what is the best format to export a clip from Final Cut Pro and the best way to encode those clips in DVD Studio Pro. Thanks for all your help!
ErinThe best and only format is mpeg2/m2v.
The encoding rate for video is based on the length of the sequence in h/m/s.
They should not be encoded in DVDSP, but exported as a self contained with current settings, no recompression and dropped into Compressor.
Based on length and the type of footage, elect a preset for video and elect Dolby 2 for audio -
Hi.
Please help me if you can.
I am exporting a Quicktime movie from FCP for DVD Studio Pro 4. I chose the MPEG 4 option in the compression, make it best quality and bounce it. But when I look at the self-contained mov file, every time a person walks across the screen I am getting little lines on the light parts of the screen or a beating or sizzling effect in the dark parts. Basically it looks like everything is "alive" somewhat - objects like curtains seem to sizzle.
Can someone guide me in the proper choices to make when exporting from FCP to import into DVD Studio Pro? There is not an MPEG-2 or M2V option, and the MPEG compression breaks it down to MPEG-2 or M2v upon import into DVD Studio Pro anyway.
I guess I don't know how to get the best quality bounce from FCP, in order to have a file that is less that 4G in size. Can someone please advise?
There are no directions on exporting FOR DVD Studio Pro in the Final Cut books, nor was there a FCP prep covered in the DVD SP books.Quick workflow from FCP -> DVDSP:
In FCP, File Export QuickTime Movie
Select DVD Studio Pro Markers in the Markers drop-down (leave other settings as is)
Save QT Movie to your preferred location
In DVDSP, import your newly-created QT Movie
(You may want to confirm your encoding settings - both in terms of bit rate and whether
you're encoding on build or have background coding enabled - prior to this step though)
Best Quality workflow:
In FCP, trash the render files for your sequence
From the Menu, File Export Using Compressor
Now, in Compressor, select the appropriate preset(s): DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes - 4:3
Optional: Delete the AIFF setting completely
Select the appropriate destination(s)
Optional: For the Dolby preset, alter Dialog Normalization (under the Audio tab of the Inspector) to -31. In the Preprocessing tab, alter the Compression Preset to None
Click Submit
Once the encode is done, import the .m2v and .ac3 (and/or .aiff) files into DVDSP
It's only fair to tell you that since this produces (pretty much) the best possible quality from Compressor, it may take as much as 5x-10x as long as the 'quick workflow' detailed earlier. (Especially if you've set DVDSP to do a one-pass encode)
