Hi, I have a new Mac Pro with 2 optical drives. Is there a way of directly copying oene to another. In other words I want to duplicate my (home-made) DVDs in one step without going to Disk Utility and making a disk image and all that palaver
should be simple shouldn't it?

Both Dragon Burn & Toast Titanium can do it...

  • When I try to restore my iTunes library from DVD, iTunes stops copying the files after some minutes

On 2 of my 9 DVDs, iTunes stops copying and I can't do anything with iTunes anymore. I have to reboot my computer. So I'm not able to bring back all my files. Has anyone got help?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • MBPro won't read SL DVD - can I copy the install DVD on a PC?

My MacBook Pro won't read the SL install DVD (as others have had problems with). I have access to a PC with DVD to DVD copy ability. My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)? Is this possible? Any tips on how would be much appreciated - a shame to buy the install DVD and unable to use it. Buying an external DVD drive doesn't make sense, as I plan on upgrading my MB with the year. Thanks!

My question is, can I burn a copy of the install DVD to another DVD and use that copy (assuming my MB will be able to read the copy DVD)?
I'm not sure why you think that would work. Either the disk is damaged, in which case you won't be able to magically create a good copy, or your drive is damaged, in which case it's not going to read a copy any better than the original.
Is this a new disk, or have you used it before? Is it readable in other machines? Can your Mac read other disks?

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • How to make direct DVD-to-DVD copy?

I'm hoping this is easier than I'm making it. I work for a small theater that films every show in a weekend on 4 camera angles plus a multimedia feed. We record every angle directly to stand-alone DVD recorders (5 DVDs per show).
I get requests from the directors to view the shows each week, and up till now, i've been dutifully using Disk Utility to make an image file of the DVD to the hard drive, then burn a new blank DVD, but this process takes about 25 minutes for every show, not to mention the disk space, and increased requests are making this too time-consuming.
*I've got 2 DVD-writable drives; isn't there a way in OSX to directly copy a non-copy-protected DVD directly to another DVD? Wouldn't that be a big thing on the new Mac Pros that have 2 internal Superdrives? I tried doing it in Finder by copying one DVD and pasting it in the blank DVD, but that didn't work.*
If not, is there software anybody recommends? Nero for the PC does exactly what I want but doesn't come in Mac. I'm not sure if Roxio Toast does it, and I haven't found a demo of anything else that works... (tried Fast DVD Copy, but it won't stop "analyzing media" and "Aimersoft DVD Copy for Mac" doesn't download a file that my mac will open.)
    Thanks for the assistance!
    ~Trav

So far as I can tell (and the only thing that comes up in Disk Utility Help) is the method which requires an image file to be fully written to the Hard Drive and then burned to a blank DVD. I'm hoping to get that down to one step, DVD-to-DVD...
Any thoughts? It seems ludicrous to me that OSX would not have this ability natively.

You already have it: Disk Utility.
To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

  • Burn from DVD to DVD on Mac

I must admit, I have never done this before. Is there a program built into OS X or freeware I can download to burn from a DVD to DVD. I believe the DVD contains PowerPoints and other files. No, I can't get the PowerPoints off of the DVD...when DVD is inserted it just has a menu to access the PowerPoints.
Thanks so much for your help in advance. PC solutions welcome as well but I am more comfortable doing this on a Mac.
    Sincerely,
    Phil

Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. Select DU Help from the Help menu and search for "Duplicating a CD or DVD." Locate the article of the same title where you will find instructions on how to duplicated a CD or DVD.
If you don't wish to duplicate the DVD but simply copy a few files to burn to another DVD, then create a new burn folder (search Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu.) Drag the files you want from the source DVD into the burn folder. The help file for creating a burn folder is followed by instructions on how to burn the contents of the folder to a blank disc.

  • Stamped DVD vs DVD-R

When we finish making our DVD and bring it to a duplicator, is it better to have them made as stamped DVDs or DVD-Rs?
    Message was edited by: docharris

Better depends how you define better but basically it's "better" to get them replicated (stamped) rather than duplicated (burnt). Better compatibility, can get away with using more bandwidth, support for Region Coding, Copy Protection and so on...

  • Aspect ratio problem in Windows Media Player for DVD from DVD Studio Pro

So I made a DVD with DVD Studio Pro and it looks good in Apple's DVD Player, on an Insignia DVD player appliance and on Playstation 2. Both the movie and the deleted scene were 16:9 from camera to Final Cut Pro and they show that way in all these players.
But on Windows Media Player for Windows XP, the program thinks the movie is 4:3 and the deleted scene is 16:9. Nero's Showtime has the same exact behavior, but at least you can force aspect ratio on Nero.
Besides being longer, the movie is different from the deleted scene in that the movie was originally out of Final Cut Express on an older Mac and it was encoded big endian. The deleted scene was output from Final Cut Pro and encoded little endian. I didn't think it would make a difference, but I tried outputting the movie from Final Cut Pro on the newer Mac and it did come out little endian. I took that into DVD Studio Pro, got rid of the old VIDEO_TS folder and re-built the project, burnt a new DVD. Then I went back to Windows and...
...the same exact problem. Some of the people I give this DVD to will be using Windows Media Player to view it, which is why I want this to not be an issue at all. What am I overlooking?

Look, everyone here (who each have been creating DVDs for over a decade) is telling you the same story. WMP is buggy. Everyone in the industry knows that. Hardware manufacturers like Dell and HP, know that. Why don't you use the DVD player program that they put on the hard drive? Sure one "Hollywood" title works. Did I mention that WMP is buggy? Test a thousand titles, and I'm certain that you will find some discs have problems on WMP, and WMP alone. (And it isn't my assertion that Hollywood DVDs have issues in WMP, everyone is telling you that.) No one has a solution for this, except to not use WMP. Let me repeat once again, no one has a solution for this except to not use WMP. It is impossible to add any sort of programming to the disc that will detect which player is being used to play the disc and compensate for the problems of that player.
Let me put it this way, if you have a disc that plays fine on Zeus's device, and on Apollo's device, and on Hera's device, and on Hermes' device, and on Artemis' device, but you have problems with Athena's device, then logically, Athena's device has a problem... not the disc. Your own experience has proved this to be true. If you were having problems with every device used, THEN you could rightfully say that there is a problem with the disc.

  • Finder/Disc Utility/Toast Will Not Burn DVD+R, DVD-R

I have an iMac that will no longer burn DVDs. I've tried various brands of DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD+R DL all of them do not burn in the finder, disc utility, or Toast. CDs burn fine. DVD+R DL discs burned previously with this machine will no longer mount. I just wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OS X and ran all updates and still have the problem.
Media brands tried: OfficeMax, TDK, Maxell, JVC, Sony.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Making 5.1 DVD in DVD Pro

    Hi,
Do you know how to make a 5.1 surround sound DVD in DVD PRO?
    Thanks
    Elad

When I was looking to do the same I didn't find a tutorial, but cobbled together the how to from various sources. Some things I learned:
DVDSP will be a 5.1 project if the aac audio is a 5.1 mix. The key is how to get a 5.1 mix. I used STPro which can output an aac track directly (no need for compressor). There are a number of steps inside Soundtrack to configure and output 5.1 inclusing setting each track to 1-6 output, setting the bus to 1-6 outputs and setting the master output as 1-6.
It's also possible to setup FCP for 5.1. As above I used STPro.
    Hope that helps.

You cannot burn a 15 or 30 Gig DVD from DVD SP and it is not supported by DVD SP. You can build those to a hard drive for replication
also what is the basic steps to creat the HD project in HD DVD not the DVD 5 and compatible with the toshiba player?
    Best Regard.
You can make a HD DVD on the DVD 5 which will play with the Toshiba and it will give HD quality (and will not play on an SD player) video results, though you cannot author the extras that HD has (the new features in HD as compared to SD DVD), pretty much menus and playback of video. The steps above will create the DVD 5. Have not tried writing to a DVD 9 size for more running time

I don't know about NTSC but there is a nice PAL solution for SD 16:9 for ordinary DVDs. The 16:9 image becomes 720x576 pixels. So the pixels are each quite wide, and the horizontal resolution is less than the vertical resolution, but at least no pixels are wasted as with letterbox.
A semi-solution is to make a HD-DVD. That format has been abandoned but Apple software pretends otherwise. Apple Compressor does compressions at around 20 Megabits/second data rate specifically for HD-DVD, and Apple DVD Studio Pro makes HD-DVDs. For short projects, less than around 30 minutes, the HD-DVD can be made on a normal DVD. (I did this for a 40 minute project by cutting the bitrate somewhat.) The quality is almost equal to Blu-Ray, but who can play it? People with well equipped Apples can.

  • HD DVD  SD DVD dvd studio

Ok so after burning an HD DVD and it not working in any of my dvd players I did a little research to find out that you have to burn SD DVD.
Ok so backtracking a bit... First I compressed in FCP under the option of HD for dvd studio. The problem is that file will only import if my preferences are set to HD DVD in dvd studio. So in order to import to SD DVD in dvd studio what should I compress a HD movie to? I would like to retain as much of the HD quality look if possible.

You need to export from FCP as SD. Try exporting to Compressor and using a standard preset to create your M2V and AC3 audio files. As long as you keep to the dimensions Eric stated, and the bitrate for encoding in Compressor is below 9.8mbps, then DVDSP should import into any SD project.
HD is long since dead as a DVD format, with Blu-Ray the dominant high def format. However, you can't create a BD disc in DVDSP... so we're stuck on SD for now.
