Dvd to FCE

Hi!
There is a dvd (no copy righted) I would like to import to FCE to do some edit, but I cannot find the way. I would like to know if there is a free way of converting a dvd to FCE. I've tried MPEG Streamclip, but they tell me to buy some components. Do you know about any free software?
Thanks in advance for your answer

Hi
And the method described by David Harbsneier - Is one I prefer - The quality is equal (or better than conversion by MPEG Streamclip or others) and as far as I know no free solution is out there.
Remember to set Camera to import in SP-mode if e.g. miniDV tape as if in LP-mode results in lot's of drop-out frames and Audio most often goes out of sync. (To me any how)

  • Importing Sony DVDirect Video on DVD into FCE

    Hello...good wishes,
I've been recording video from a Canon XL2 directly to DVD using a Sony VRD-VC20 DVDirect DVD Burner. When I try to import this video material into Final Cut Express, FCE does not recognize the format.
Apple Support says that the XL2 Camcorder is a supported device in FCE, but is not able to be conclusive regarding video recorded to DVD using the Sony DVDirect Burner.
The only way I've found to get any of this video into FCE is to play the DVD's in a standard DVD player' record the video back onto DV tape, and import them through the XL2. This is a daunting, funky proposition given the hours and hours of video I need to edit - and I worry about degradation of quality using this process.
Are there any third party drivers written out there or do any of you have ideas how I can get this video from DVD to FCE?
    Thanks~

I use a Sony VRD-VC20 to burn Tivo recordings and VHS tapes to DVD. I just picked up a program called Cinematize2. It's a DVD clip extractor that retails for about $50 US. It allows you to set an in and out point on a DVD and extract the clip into a format compatible with FCP/FCE. Previously I used MPEG Streamclip 1.3.1 which allows you to export mpeg2 files to Quicktime, AVI, or DV format for use in FCP/FCE. Mpeg Streamclip also allows you to set in and out points before exporting. The link to download MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 is: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html.
In order to use the MPEG2 playback and converter feature you will also need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2) for about $30 US. If you have either Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don't have to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version from Apple (www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download).

  • Compression settings for making DVD in FCE

I'm sure this question must have been answered many times - but I can't seem to find anything...
I want to make DVD from FCE - I ususally make a Quick time file from QT conversion - but what settings are teh correct ones for DVD?
The project is in a mix of clips in 1920x1080 and 720x575 and the QT file I made with these settings: H264 - size: 1920x1080 looks good when played on teh computer, but when burned to a DVD with iDVD, it jumps in the DVD player .
When I make a QT file (not QT conversion), it sqeezes the dimensions down to 4:3
    Any suggestions?

    towanda62 wrote:

for usage with iDVD, no 'Conversion' needed, the dvd-authoring app will convert anyhow. 'Export QT movie' should do it. too much 'intermediates' doesn't add any value in DVD-making.
'jumping' usually indicates a) too high burn speed, b) 'dirty' player- or burner-head, c) 'wrong' brand of dvd-r (Verbatim has an excellent track-record here), don't use no-names.

  • How to get video from DVD into FCE?

    Hi,
I have a DVD which I got from a childhood friend. The DVD contains a compilation of old film clips (her family had old super 8 movies transferred to DVD). I'm trying to import the clip (it's one long video clip, 30 mins long) into FCE for editing. But, when I try to import, all I see on the DVD is one file folder labeled VIDEO_TS; this folder contains eight files with strange suffixes, such as .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP, none of which are accessible. Anyone have any idea how I can get the files into Final Cut Express?
I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you.
    Vic

Hi again, Martin. I did the 'conversion', and it appeared something was happening (i.e. a 'progress bar' showed that something was going on, and it took about 20 mins or so. So, I figured it was doing the conversion. Once done, a 'play' button appeared, but when I pressed it, nothing happened. Does that sound like I'm missing the MPEG2 Playback Component?
Note: I noticed during the conversion an indication that the file, about 2 gigs seemed to be being created, but for the life of me, I don't know where the file went (i.e. I don't know where (or even if) it was stored on my computer). Anyways, the process seems not to have worked. I guess, as you said, I'll need to purchase the Playback Component?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Large Files to DVD from FCE

What are your best ideas for putting a two-hour Final Cut Express file onto DVD? What I'm doing is exporting to QuickTime, then using iDVD, but I wonder if there's something better, i.e. quicker.
    Thanks for any input.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I'd suggest the following -
Export from FCE as a Quicktime Movie and be sure to uncheck the option for "Make movie self-contained". This will generate a QT reference movie, which happens fairly quickly compared to creating a self-contained movie.
Import your QT reference movie into iDVD, select your template, etc. and build your DVD project.
In iDVD, burn to a disk image on your HD instead of directly to a DVD disk. Then use Disk Utility to burn your DVD disks. The overall process seems to go faster this way. If you keep the disk image you can burn more DVDs anytime at just the time it takes to burn, without having to wait for iDVD to prepare menus or rendering any video again.
I let iDVD render overnight, so I've never actually timed the entire rendering process however on my 2.0GHz/G5/SP, once I have the disk image it takes about 50 min to burn a 2 hour movie to a 2.4x DL-DVD disk.
To get a 2-hour movie at maximum quality (assuming at least 1 template and a menu or two), I'd suggest using dual-layer DVDs. Technically you can get 2 hours on a single layer DVD but you will sacrifice some quality in the process. (Note - select Best Quality, not Best Performance in your iDVD Preferences).

  • Capturing DVD On FCE-HD

I'm trying to capture self generated DVD video into FCE-HD. In "Easy Setup" which category should I choose? DV-NTSC?
I'm attempting to ingest the DVD video out of my DVD player in my MacBook.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately, you're asking your FCE question in the FCP forum. The FCE forum is here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=936
That said, you cannot capture the way you've described. Essentially you have two options; hardware or software.
The Software option includes using software to rip/convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format. I'd recommend MPEG Streamclip for this.
The hardware method would include connecting a stand-alone DVD player to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter), then set FCE's device control to 'Non-Controllable Device' and use Capture Now.
Keep in mind that either of the above methods are for non-copyright protected material. Also, if at all possible you'd be much better off using the original acquisition tapes as DVD-Video footage is heavily compressed.

  • Best way to transfer a DVD to FCE please, unknown files!

    Hi there friends....
Ok, so I had the unfort situation of my Canopus transfer box blow up!!
So, I then got a DVD of my vision....I need to pop that vision in FCE.
But the DVD was added to my hard drive as a "VIDEO_TS" file
This is what I see in the finder:
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS010.BUP
    VTS010.IFO
    VTS011.VOB

    VTS020.BUP
    VTS020.IFO
    VTS021.VOB
    VTS022.VOB
    VTS023.VOB
Whats the best way to get all this (Whatever it all means!!) into FCE??

  • What am I doing wrong?DVD to FCE

I have used all the advice that I have found and still am hitting a wall. I'm getting very frustrated.
I got 2 DVD with Non-copyrighted video on them. I'm using MPEG Streamclip+MPEG2 programs to convert the DVDs. I have converted them to DV and saved in a folder. When I try to open them in FCE I'm not able to use them. Where am I going wrong?
I am try to find out how to do this by reading whatever I can find.
I was able to get the DV file into the browser and pull out some clips, BUT when they play in the timline I get a beeping. What did I do now?
    Thanks Brian

  • How do you import video that was on VHS that is now on DVD into FCE 4?

The footage that I will be using is was on VHS and was then put on to DVD. I just have no idea if and how to import it into FCE 4. All the footage is archival that was on VHS and is being used in a documentary. So it would be great to know how to do this and any help would be great! ohh I'm also new to the FCE 4 world!

    Welcome to the forum!
It would be better to work with the VHS directly as DVD-Video is highly compressed. But if that's all you have to work with, you have two options: hardware or software.
The hardware method involves connecting a DVD player's analog outputs to a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) then connecting the DV device to your Mac via Firewire.
The software method means using MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV to convert the DVD's VOB files into an editable format.

  • Problems Importing from a DVD into FCE

    Hi all
I have successfully imported all my own footage from my dv camcorder in FCE 4 for a wedding and placed it into a sequence. However I have recently received more footage from another chap that was filming on the day, whom gave it to me on a DVD.
I know nothing about what camcorder he was using but initially I have two big problems: There is no audio and the image is squashed once imported into FCE (he shot widescreen and I shot 4:3), however my DVD player plays the audio.
The video files read like this "VTS01.VOB", however there seems to be other files supporting: "VTS01.BUP" and "VTS01.IFO" if thats any help on how to fix the problem? I really need the audio to work in FCE and some advice on changing the widescreen clips to my 4:3 project without looking squashed.
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Kev

Hi guys thanks for the links!
I think I would rather go for the hardware route simply because it sounds cheaper. I don't have an analog/ digital converter so an considering recording DVD output onto DV tape then importing it into FCE via my camcorder.
I'm kinda new to this video stuff so I have no idea how to do this. Can I just connect my Canon MVX20i to my DVD player somehow and record it to tape? I initially tried to connect it with the red, white and yellow connections in the back of the DVD player (to my camera) but nothing is happening. Neither on the record setting or playback setting on my camera.
    Any advice?
    Cheers for the help!

  • Getting home videos from DVD to FCE via Handbreak

I have home videos that are on DVD, and that's the only place they reside in the world. I want to get them to FCE so I can combine some different shots. I'm using Handbreak to get the video off the DVD's, but when I did it FCE was unable to read the resulting file. Is there a certain setting in Handbrake that I should use to make this work??
    Thanks

I'm so happy to be able to finally help someone because I had this same problem and have it licked now.
First, you need MPEG Streamclip. Get that here http://www.squared5.com/
Then you need the MPEG Quicktime Component, get that at http://www.apple.com/quicktime (link is on the left side of the page)
But your DVD in, open MPEG streamclip, then file > open DVD (just click on the CD in finder) and hit open and follow the instructions.
Once that's done (and the video should play in the streamclip window), export it by doing ... APPLE+E, compress to Apple DV-PAL, quality up to 100% and 25 frames per second, sound should be on uncompressed.
Once you do that, just open FCE, file > import > file (APPLE+I) and select the file that you just made in streamclip. It's that easy. I'm so happy I've found this solution. Hope you can get some use out of it.

  • Import a homemade dvd into fce

I am trying to import a dvd of a show someone filmed for me but all I get is paper files when I try to import into fce the files look like this/Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.BUP
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.IFO
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VIDEOTS.VOB
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_010.BUP
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_010.IFO
    /Volumes/DVDVIDEO_RECORDER/VIDEO_TS/VTS_011.VOB
does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the footage other than analog playback through my deck any software or shortcuts

    Tom's writeup is good instruction.
If you use MPEG Streamclip you may also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($19.99 from Apple) if you don't already have it installed on your Mac.
However, I'd add that you might be surprised how good the footage will look via analog playback through your deck coupled with analog-digital conversion through a camcorder or a converter such as the Canopus AVDC-110.

  • Import a DVD to FCE

How can I import a DVD onto OS X 10.5.8 Intel MacBookPro to edit in Final Cut Express?  I have MPEG Streamclip and Handbrake but I can't seem to import the file to MP4.  I have it as M4V but I cannot transfer this over to MP4.  This is a commercial movie that is probably encrypted.

    Thank you!
I've just downloaded Streamclip freeware from Squared 5.
    I will try it.
One more tip. Do I need QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component to do the job (ie converting vob into DV PAL and edit the movie in PAL)?
