DVD to FCPX

I have a DVD disc containing VOB files. I want to import this DVD to Final Cut Pro X so to do some editing to the original content. By using the MPEG Streamclip I found that the DVD I have has the following specs:
Stream: VTS_01_1.VOB
Path: /Volumes/PRJ_20101116_002/VIDEO_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB
Type: VOB program stream
Duration: 2:32:42
Data Size: 2.71 GB
Bit Rate: 2.54 Mbps
Video Tracks: 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 576, 4:3, 25 fps, 2.50 Mbps, lower field first
Audio Tracks: 192 MP2 stereo, 48 kHz, 224 kbps
Stream Files:
VTS_01_1.VOB (976.68 MB)
VTS_01_2.VOB (976.68 MB)
VTS_01_3.VOB (822.04 MB)
What settings do I have to use so to get all the media out of the DVD and import them to FCPX with the best possible results ?
Final Video is for You-Tube.

This compression codec has two more options.
Scan Mode: Interlaced or Progressive ?
Aspect Ratio which I understand that will be 4:3 for maintaining the original size.
Also Interlaced Scaling and Reinterlace Chroma are enabled. Do I have to keep them enabled ? I read the manual but those settings are not so clear for me.
Last one. Field Dominance. The get info window of the MPEG Streamclip says lower field first so I suppose I have to live it as it is.

  • When I try to burn a DVD from FCPX it burns everything but the video.

So far I am having this problem on only one project. I am very new to FCPX, so I'm thinking it's user error. When I share to DVD it burns everything but the actual video. I get audio and text effects but a black screen otherwise. The only thing I know that I've done differently from previous projects was using stabilization. I have since burned other projects to DVD with no problem, but this project will not export correctly.

  • Just tried to "Share" a DVD in FCPX...hanging...processing...nothing

I opened the share monitor and it said audio and video successful and just hangs there right at the end doing nothing.
FCPX just hangs there saying "Processing"
    Anyone else seeing this?

This morning we had a screener of a feature film that had rendered out in Avid overnight (17 hours!), 24fps 1920 x 1080 h.264 with watermarks and mask. We discovered that the main title had gone offline, so reconnected and rendered out that portion of the Avid timeline, then rebooted (yes) into the FCP X partition and set out to try to repair it and make a DVD from it.
The h.264 sat there happily, we used the Connect tool to overlay the "Media Offline " chunk after discovering Overwrite vision-only edits don't work as expected (they blow away audio), and created a disk image using Share... and Compressor, which burnt happily as a 23.98fps DVD. So that worked for us, more or less real time on a quad-core Mac Pro 1,1 with 8GB RAM, single pass.
So maybe creating a disk image (Save to hard drive, rather than the DVD burner) may provide a solution - then burn with Disk Utility.

  • To burn a HD DVD from FCPX 10.0.07 do I now need to have compressor

Since I updated my FCPX I can't burn a HD DVD.
Do I have to have Compressor now?

    Aha!
I was using the DVD option. I've tried the Blu-ray option and that has allowed me to burn at 1080i onto a DVD, or it appears to have.
It won't play back on my computer, and I don't have a Blu-ray player here, so I can't check.
Should I really burn it onto a Blu-ray disc?
Can't I burn it on a DVD disc at 1080i any more?
Just to show how thick I am, how would I do a screen shot?

  • Burning a DVD from FCPX

    My workflow is as follows:
    1. Shoot in HXR-NX5u Sony AVCHD 1920x1080 | 29.97 fps
    2. Import as is to FCPX letting FCPX create the project properties according to the first clip
    3. Edit and create project.
    4. Export as ProRes 422
    5. Burn with iDVD to a PAL DVD 16:9
My result is an acceptable DVD. My only issue is with pans and fast zooms there remains a "choppiness" in the videos when played on DVD player and computer alike. This choppiness is not present on the exported ProRes 422 file, nor is it present on a Vimeo export that I did. Only on the DVD wherever it is played.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks.
When I say choppy, I mean that when the frame pans it seems as if it is skipping frames and jumping to the next. It is not skipping frames though because this is not apparent on steadily framed shots. It is a shame because my montages come out so beautifully and when I burn them I get this choppiness which gives me a sub par result.

  • Current situation for DVD to FCPX since MPEG2 components are gone

I have family videos converted to DVDs with varying degrees of compression.  Apparently the recommended approach to importing DVD's into FCPX was to use MPEG Streamclip, with the MPEG2 quicktime components.
My DVD's play fine using VLC or DVD Player, but MPEG Streamclip complains "File open error: unsupported file type" and the MPEG2 components for quicktime no longer seem to be for sale on Apple's website.
I found a product called VOBMerge that's supposed to combine the different VOBs into one file with the MPEG2 encoding, but perhaps I don't understand the layout or nature of VOB files, or the order I'm supposed to put them in, because the resulting combined file didn't play.  (Some of the VOBs play individually with VLC, but some don't, so I don't understand that either...)
What does work is using Handbrake to convert the disk to h.264 encoding.  Handbrake will also (very quickly) convert the disk to MPEG2 codec, but FCPX shows me a blue screen and some audio if I import the MPEG2 file.  Converting to MPEG4 codec using handbrake doesn't seem to work at all.
It seems that if the MPEG2 components for quicktime were still available, I could maybe use vobmerge or handbrake to make MPEG2 files quickly and easily off of my DVDs, and then view them into FCPX.  But, since the MPEG2 components do not seem to be available, is my best option converting to H.264?  Or is there some other codec I should use?  Handbrake only offers three codecs.
What about using VLC or FFMPEG to stream directly out to some other format that FCPX can read?
    <Link Edited By Host>

For future readers of this thread, I'm going to post the links and instructions.  From MPEG Streamclip: I think we should assume these instructions about refusing to install (yet still being required) still apply for Mavericks:
"The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion and Mountain Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion and Mountain Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion or Mountain Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component M. Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion or Mountain Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion and Mountain Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion and Mountain Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7."
This is the component, it says:
    "Note:
On OS X Lion and later, MPEG-2 playback functionality is built into QuickTime X. The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component is not required and cannot be installed."
but apparently it's still required and can be installed if you do it right.

  • Help. trying to burn a dvd from fcpx. says bitrate too high

I'm using fcpx for a montage with effects like generators etc...not sure if this is why it says bitrate too high. I want to burn a dvd and it stops at 66% saying bitrate too high. I've seen an answer from 2011....wondering if anyone has anything new? My computer is Mac book pro 15 inch, latest software. I went to compressor but the final product doesn't allow me to put in a title and i'm worried about final quality. Thanks for any help

I would say usually it's about the same. If the settings are adjusted properly, it can sometimes improve the results; conversely, there's always the potential to get terrible results if the settings are wrong. (FCP X Share kind of takes that risk out of the process.)
Where the software can often add value is when you have long videos that you're trying to fit on a disk. Or trying to compress certain HD material with complex scenes. Or sometimes, you'll run into players that choke on a DVD and the adjustments in Compressor give you a chance to adjust the bit rate to a level that widens the disk's playability. And there are audio and video effects that can be added in Compressor without re-editing in FCP.
BTW, I don't believe you've yet told us how long your project is.

  • How do you create a DVD from FCPX 10.0.7

To start off..I'm no expert. Just frustrated. I have my finished Project in FCPX 10.0.7 and want to burn it to DVD. Not looking for any fancy intro's, titles, chapters or anything. I just want to throw it onto a DVD which will begin playing once I pop the DVD into a player.
From my Project I chose "Share to DVD" and Transcoding started. Then at 66% completed it just stopped... and says,
"Finishing: Create DVD: Waiting for Create Disc to finish." That was last night. This morning, it still says that.
Not sure what to do. HELP!

Hmmm... not really sure what is causing your problems...?
Just a few things you might try...
    Trash your Preference File: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Try with another project... same problem...?
Check: File / Relink Project Files... anything missing there...?
    Are you using Optimized Media...?
Did you finished rendering the timeline...?
    Are you using ProRes 422...?
Try and export as Master File... does that work...?

  • PAL DVD mit FCPX und Compressor 4

I have FCPX and compressor 4 installed on a new imac. I edited my firs project. 27 minutes of scuba diving. When I export the movie to DVD the quality of the pictures in the movie is poor. I made in compressor a preset in changing from NTSC to PAL and I changed to 16:9. The movie was then in toast only 800 MB and the quality is very poor. Can somebody tellmy how to make a PAL DVD in good quaity, 2-3 GB?How do I have to change the preset in compressor?
Thanks for your help. By the way I love FCPX!

Try making the Compressor quality two-pass VBR between 6.5 and 7.5. Or try one-pass CBR at 7.5. You don't have to export the whole movie, just pick a problem section and mark in and out points in the Compressor preview.

  • Sharing to dvd with fcpx 10.0.6 reverts to dual layer regardless of settings.

I upgraded to newest version of fcpx last night, (10.0.6).  Also upgraded motion and compressor.  Now when I try to burn to DVD even after changing default to single layer and specifying single layer in share setup, it compiles to the point it asks for a dual layer disc.  tried three times with same results each time.
I know this is new version but can anyone come up with fix?
    Thanks.

I have versions of all those Tom; the trick for me is to quickly get to a workflow that is reliable and doesn't take too long to develop or learn.
Then give Compressor a try. It's more reliable than the FCP Share and you'll have more control over the quality of your product. Start with the Create DVD preset and in Inspector>Encoder>Quality you can adjust the data rate and as you do, Compressor will provide you with feedback about how many minutes will fit on a disk.
    Good luck.

  • Other options for making dvd outside fcpx

    Hi
I was just curious. I have lots of time for curiosity since the .img I'm exporting from fcpx to make dvds is at 58% after 5 hours. And it's just a simple dvd with menu and chapter headings.
I imagine I could have exported the timeline to Compressor right? Would making a .img for a simple dvd have been quicker that way?
Someone suggested using iDVD. Could I have exported the timeline directly into iDVD or would I have to have exported something from FCPX first?
I guess I went with using fcpx cause it was such a simple dvd.
    la di la di la,
    elmer

You use FCP X Share>Master File.
Then drop the Master File into iDVD in the usual way.
BTW: 5 hours seems a bit long to me. Depends on length.
At 66% all the encoding is finished, then FCP X hands the burning to the Create Disc app, it should happen all automatically.
So 58% means you are nearly there.

  • Is it possible to burn a DVD from FCPX in 16:9 aspect ratio?

I am using FCP X 10.1.1 on an iMac with OS 10.9.3
I have HD video shot in 1080X720.  I realize a dvd isn't HD, but I would like to try and get the wide screen aspect.  Is that even possible?  I would love any sort of assistance!  Thanks much!
    -R

    Yes.
Just go ahead and burn the DVD which will finish up with whatever aspect the project is.
A 16:9 aspect ratio has nothing to do with hi-def,  it's just that hi-def in the last 10 years has adopted that ratio but it was used long before then, together with 4:3, for standard def DV.

  • What do I do wrong, cant burn a DVD from FCPX 10.1.1

    It comes with this window

    OK.
Then we'll need some more basic information: System specs; Original media format; project settings.
Are you using physical media or making a disk image?
Have you ever before exported and burned a DVD with your current setup?
Can you export this project with any other share options – for example, a master file? If you cannot, are you able to export another existing or a test project?

  • Burning directly to DVD from FCPX fails ...

When I try and burn from Final Cut Pro X there is no share monitor and it just processes and then does nothing.

Ok I click 'burn' and the window comes up processing but it doesnt have the 'share monitor' tab just cancel button.
I know this because i did the same thing on another mac (not on the network) and it works! The computers I am working on are networked... and updated - so not sure what it could be!!
