Discussions about ripping aren't allowed per the terms of use. There are lots of other forums where this is allowed.

  • How do I transfer legally Owned DVD's to my iPod Video?

I got a new iPod Video for christmas and I want to know how to take my own personal DVD's and transfer them to my iPod. I've read lots of threads about this subject but I haven't been successful in transfering anything. I downloaded Videora and DVDFab Decrypter but I don't know how to use them. I also found a lot of feedback saying that it would be illegal to transfer DVD's to the iPod and all I can say to that is, that's absolutely ridiculous. I bought the DVD's legally and should be able to transfer them. I paid for them and I don't plan on selling them to anyone else so explain to me what's illegal about it. I think that preventing us from transfering DVD's is just another way for Apple to make money. Eventually they'll come out with a Movie library in iTunes that you'll have to pay for, they already have music videos and tv shows. The other thing that really ****** me off is that in no way do they make clear that you're not allowed to transfer DVD's to your iPod. I think that a lot of people assumed along with me that you can transfer any movies you wanted to the iPod without a problem and the fact that you can't is a serious question in my mind as to whether or not Apple has committed fals advertising. Apple products are already priced much higher than they should be and I feel that this is just another way for them to make money. Sorry I needed to rant. Can anyone help me transfer my DVD's to my iPod? Or direct me towards some other 3rd party programs that might work easier?

"Why would anyone want to stare at that little screen for 2+ hours... I dont think apple false advertised at ALL...
Watching a movie would just kill your battery and waste a lot of space on your iPod which was first intended for music..
Pretty common sense if you ask me."
whowhat I think that a lot of people want to watch movies on the new iPod otherwise the software that transfer DVD's to iPod's wouldn't exist. And I'm sorry but what is the point of making an iPod video if you can't watch movies on it? so that you can watch a music video for 3 minutes? or your choice of 5 tv shows or however many there are? I don't think so. I just feel that if I pay $400 for a new iPod and I spend $20 on a movie, I shouldn't have to pay an extra $30 just so I can get the software that puts DVD's onto my iPod. Obviously if I'm at home I'm not going to sit and stare at the iPod but the whole point of an iPod is that you can have all your music and all your videos on the go when you're on a plane or a train or a long car ride. I just think it's bull **** the way apple does business making everything overpriced and all I'm saying is that when I bought the new iPod I expected that I would be able to put my own movies onto the iPod. And even though when you buy a DVD you're buying the right to view it, not the rights to it, all I would be doing is viewing it on my iPod, how is that wrong?

  • Is there a way to import commercially purchased DVD Movie to my iPod?

Is there a way to import commercially purchased DVD Movie to my iPod?
I tried the "Import" function and that didn't work. Is there a function to convert and import or is there a program that might accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance.

I would argue that transferring the movie to another medium for *your own personal use* is covered under "fair use", but of course I am not a lawyer. The law that you may be breaking would be the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Read up:
    http://w2.eff.org/IP/DRM/fairuse_anddrm.html
In any case, we still can't tell you how to do it on these forums.

  • Is theRe a. Way to put my own dvd movies on my iPod youch

Is there a way to put my own DVD movies on my iPod touch?

Are these home-made movies or commercial? If commercial we cannot discuss here
For your movies, you can use handbrake to create a file (there ia an iPod Touch preset) and then import into iTunes and sync over.

  • Is ripping DVD's to an iPod Legal?

I've used Handbrake to rip my DVD movies onto my iPod Video. I would like to know if it is legal or not. If possible, please have proof.
    Conditions:
-I only use it for myself
-I don't copy the movie to anyone else's iPod (even if they have the movie)
-I am not showing it to anyone
-I am not making a profit (a.k.a. I am not selling it)
    -I own the DVD's I am ripping

I am sorry, let me clarify. It is illegal to copy a movie (period). This is due to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that congress passed.
That being said, the cops are not going to be knocking on your door for copying movies for your personal use. As long as you are not selling them / putting them online for download.
I rip movies and put them on my iPod to watch sometimes. I believe that I bought the DVD, I should be able to watch it were I please, on my iPod or TV. The Movie Industry begs to differ, however. The movie companies think just like the computer software companies, they believe that when you purchase a DVD you are not actually buying the movie. In fact, you are just buying a license to play the movie at your home.
You can read more about the copyright act by going here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalMillenium_CopyrightAct
I hope this clarifies what I was talking about.

  • Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
    Kind Regards,
    Julias

I am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
my ipod will only upload video podcasts, no ordinary videos, except for one. they are all the same format (.MOV quicktime), and my i tunes has them all on it and plays them fine there, its just when i drag and drop or insert my videos onto my ipod any other way theydont get uploaded onto my ipod like everything else does, there seems no way that i can get my own videos onto it. only one video that isnt a podcast has ever uploaded, and its the same format as the others!
Any ideas or help would be apprichiated ( i cant spell:P)

  • DVD Menu system on iPod?

I'm converting my dvd's to my iPod. Can iPod recognize and utilize the menu system on DVD's? or can you only add the file that is the whole movie. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to pick your dvd in iPod and have it start to the dvd menu and then be able to use the touch sensitive scroller to click different options on the dvd menu.

I suppose that if you wanted a movie and a trailer and deleted scenes etc, you could rip/convert them all and then put them in a playlist. For example I have the Grand Canyon and Hawaiian 3-part Brady Bunch Episodes in Their own playlists so that I can skip to the next video or play them through non-stop. What I wish Apple would come up with is the ability to use chapter stops, perhaps in a future update? But please fix the shortcoming of the remote control first. Good luck and much fun with your new iPod.

  • How to convert VCR Tape to DVD on MACbook Pro?

Any insight into how to convert VCR tapes to DVD on Macbook Pro would be much appreciated!

The first question is:  how to get video into your Mac?
My answer is:  use a DV camcorder as a translator.  Most Canons and Sonys do this.  Here are some general steps:
    1.  connect the video and audio outputs of your VCR to the input jacks of the camcorder.  (If the video is on an S-video jack instead of the conventional yellow phono jack, it will be a little bit better quality.)
    2.  Using your camcorder's menu, set it to "AV IN->DV OUT".  This will vary according to the model of your DVCAM.  One hint:  all camcorders have a 3-position camera/off/play(vcr) switch.  In this application, most of them use the PLAY position.
    3.  Connect the DV out of the camcorder to a firewire port on the Mac.  This requires the cable that comes with the camera...it's a mini-firewire on one end, and a regular firewire 400 on the other.  (If your Mac has only a FW 800 jack, you may need another adapter.)
    4.  Turn on the DVCAM.  Usually, iMovie will automatically open and be ready to record...if not, start it.
    5.  Hit PLAY on the VHS machine.  You should see the video in the iMovie window.  When you see what you want to save, press iMovie's button to start recording.  You're free to edit the movie in any way you want.
When you have enough for a DVD, save it and use iDVD to burn a disc.
Alternatively, if you want to save a step, you can skip the iMovie step and just open up iDVD and select the feature...I forget the exact name...but it's like "Quick Movie" that will just save it as one stream.

It depends on the format of the file. I agree with Mitch re: the suggestion for QuickTimePro... go here for Apple Tutorials: Creating video for iPod.

I need to de-authorize older macbook and ipods. I read support for Itunes via my account. Directions to "manage devices", but only choice is to deauthorize all computers.  How can I get list of all devices?  My account says four devices are alread authorized under my ID, but does not list them. Please advise. thanks.

The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the  "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.

  • How can i install iwork dvd in Macbook Air?

Somebody know how can i install iwork dvd in Macbook Air? I try to use the CD compartment from my Macbook pro, but it don't work... tks

First, share your MB pro DVD drive on the network in System Preferences > Sharing.
Insert the iWork DVD into the MBpro's drive.
Then go to your MBair and click "Remote Disc" in the Finders Sidebar.
You'll see your MBpro listed in the finder window.  Click the arrow next to The MBpro name and you'll see the shared DVD.  Double click that and the installation process should begin.

  • Tutorial: How to get DVD's on your iPod

This tutorial is intended for the serious hobbyist who already have a collection of home videos on DVD. The tutorial shows how to get home DVD's onto your iPod in professional quality (Note 1) by:
    - using H.264 and AAC, and
    - avoiding intermidate transcoding steps
    Software required (Note 2):
    - DVD Decrypter (free)
    - BeLight with VOB plugin (free)
    - QuickTime Pro 7.0.3 ($30) with MPEG-2 plugin ($20)
    Overview:
1 - DVD -> .vob Using DVD Decrypter (minutes)
2 - .vob -> .wav Using BeLight (minutes)
    3 - .vob + .wav -> .m4v Using QuickTime (hours)
    Step 1:
Insert DVD and launch DVD Decrypter
    First time only:
    Mode - IFO
Tools - Settings - IFO Mode - On Startup Enable Stream Processing + Options File Splitting None
DVD Decrypter will scan the DVD and automatically select the longest title in the Input tab.
Often there is more information on a DVD than you want on your iPod and DVD Decrypter allows you to select the video and audio streams you want to transfer. Furthermore it combines the information into one big .vob file, allowing QuickTime and BeLight to process this information directly.
Click on the Stream Processing tab and deselect the streams you don't want. (Note 3)
Set the destination to an empty folder you will be using for preparing the iPod movie.
Click DVD -> harddisk icon and wait for DVD Decrypter to complete
    Exit DVD Decrypter
    Step 2:
    Launch BeLight
Select the .vob file as input
Click on the WAV/PCM tab and select 16 Bits Stereo Wave.
In case the audio stream is multi channel surround sound BeLight will down mix it to 2 channels.
Click Start and wait for BeLight to finish
    Exit BeLight
    Step 3:
    Launch QuickTime
Open the .vob file (Note 4)
    Open .wav file
    Edit - Select All
    Edit - Copy
Back in the window with the video
Ensure play position is at the beginning of the video
    Edit - Add to movie
    File - Export - Movie to MPEG-4 (Note 5)
Use most recent settings, except for the first time (Note 6)
Set extension of the file name to .m4v
    Click OK to start export
This will take a long time, typical 1 hour for each 10 minutes on a 3 GHz Pentium IV machine.
    Finalising:
Use QuickTime to boilerplate the movie.
Window - Show Movie Properties to add info like Title, Director and Producer
View - Set Poster to set frame as poster for movie (This will show up on the icon in iTunes)
You can even choose to add a still picture to the end of the movie and use that as poster.
Add the file to iTunes and it will show up under videos.
If you are happy with this tutorial, please acknowledge by voting + on this post to give it a positive rating.
    ENJOY!

    Note 1:
Being on a Windows platform I have tried Videora iPod converter, PQ DVD Converter, Cucusoft and the tutorial based on DVDx and Xilisoft, but they all have one or more severe shortcomings, such as audio being out of sync, wrong proportions, mediocre picture quality.
    Note 2:
DVD Decrypter can be obtained from a number of locations on the internet. Google for DVD Decrypter to obtain a suitable location for download. In this tutorial the version of the software used was v3.5.4.0.
BeSweet can also be obtained from a number of locations on the internet. Google for BeSweet to obtain a suitable location for download. In this tutorial the following software was downloaded from http://dspguru.doom9.net/
    - BeSweet v1.4
    - BeLight
    - VOBInput.dll v1.3 plugin
QuickTime 7.0.3 can be obtained from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/win.html
The MPEG-2 playback plugin is available here http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Note 3:
If you are new to DVD's here's a short description of what you may find on a DVD.
When using Windows Explorer to examine the files on a DVD you will typically find at least the folders:
    AUDIO_TS
    VIDEO_TS
AUDIO_TS is normally empty but VIDEO_TS holds a number of files, all with extensions like:
    .IFO - Information file
.BUP - Backup of information file
    .VOB - Video Object
A VOB contains streams of video, audio and subtitles. It may even optionally hold
    - multiple video streams - known as angles,
    - multiple audio tracks - different languages or formats (DTS/Dolby Digital/MPEG/PCM), and
    - multiple subtitles - in different languages.
There can be several titles on a DVD, named VTS_01, VTS_02, VTS_03 etc.
Since a VOB can be quite large they are split into individual files each less than 1 GB in size. E.g. if VTS_01 is more than 3 GB it is split into files named:
    VTS010.VOB
    VTS011.VOB
    VTS012.VOB
    VTS013.VOB
    Note 4:
QuickTime can also read .vob files directly from the DVD, however the DVD drive will spin contantly during the export so in order to spare it it is better first to extract the DVD to the harddisk. Having the DVD moved to harddisk has additional advantages in that multiple VOB files are concatenated into one file.
    Note 5:
Due to a bug in QuickTime 7.0.3 the Movie to iPod (320x240) export setting do not work when video is MPEG-2. What happens is that QuickTime will start exporting the movie and update the status until it reached 17%. At this point QuickTime will chrash. Once Apple has fixed this issue you don't have to manually set all the correct options as described in note 6. Then you can simply select the Movie to iPod (320x240) option directly.
    Note 6:
    Video Settings
    MPEG4
    H.264
    Bitrate: 622 kbps (Note 7)
    Pictures: Same as source
    Sync: Same as pictures
    320 x 240 if 4:3 or 320 x 180 if 16:9
    Advanced
    Deselect Main
    Select Baseline
Select fastest (Highest quality setting incompatible with iPod)
    Audio Settings
    AAC-LC (Music)
    128 kbps
    Optimal
    44.1 kHz
    Stereo
Click OK to accept advanced settings
    Click OK to accept settings
    Note 7:
A video rate of 622 kbps results in 750 kbps when audio is 128 kbps and is the setting used by QuickTime when selecting the internal Movie to iPod export option. The iPod can handle 768 kbps video + 160 kbps audio so the video bitrate can be raised to say 750 kbps. However the quality difference between a video rate of 622 kbps and 750 kbps is marginal.
I have played ipod videos encoded at 750 kbps video and 160 kbps audio without experiencing problems. However be warned that if you movie contains a lot of action this will generate peaks in the video rate. Whether these peaks will cause stuttering by exceeding 768 kbps when using a setting of 750 kbps I don't know and I have not yet seen enough footage to safely recommend 750 kbps. However personally I will be using 750 kbps and report back if I experience any problems.
Short videos in iTunes Music Store use 622 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Billie Jean and Bad, Pixar For the Birds). Longer videos used 570 kbps video rate (Michael Jackson Thriller, ABC - Lost).
