DVD to play on TV DVD player -vs- DVD to play on computer

Hello Folks,
What is the main difference, in format, between the DVD's that you play on a regular DVD player attached to a TV and
a DVD that plays on computers that have a DVD drive with DVD playing capabilities (like the ones that play on the Mac with the Apple "DVD Player")?
Do you need to author or burn these differently or the same?
Thanks!

This place is pretty good
There are some general rules - first read the tutorials and work through them (there may be some errors, but it gets you started), then play with some projects just for fun for yourself
1.) Use good media for burning DVDs (non-replicated) if you are just making from your burner for others, burn at slow rate
2.) aPac audio and be careful of using video rates that are too high if you are just making from your burner for others
3.) Try not to fill a DVD to the brim if you are just making from your burner for others
4.) Test Test Test before duplicating/replicating. And when you are done testing, make sure to Test. Partly tounge in cheek, but not. Proof in simulator only as a start, then build and watch in DVD Player (Apple) then burn a copy and test on a few machines
5.) Play with video encoding settings to see what works for different types of material
The majority of issues relate to players. There are discussions here about how to make DVD SP even better (dvdafteredit, etc.) which really gets under the hood. For the most part DVD SP does a real good job, particularly if you are not getting fancy (such as scripts) and you can produce a ton of projects that are fine. Some things some players get weird and DVD Players are all not the same. Windows computers can behave strange in general (for any DVD not just DVD SP) depending on DVD software, hardware and which version of WIndows Media Player, some DVD Players/Manufacturers are inconsistent in quality (one DVD player may work fine, others won't same model and make)
And if you try enough machines you will find something weird at some point. I sent DVDs out for QC checks, came back perfectly fine (bunch of menus and buttons) except one DVD player for some reason would not work with one button on a menu. It worked with every other button on the menu, and worked with every other button on every other menu, but for some reason -:(
Then of course check discs were redone and the problem went away, with absolutely nothing being changed on the menu...go figure

  • DVD Burned from iDVD 6.0.1 plays on iMac but not a DVD player?

After burning a DVD production on DVD-RW and DVD+RW CDs and both directly from iDVD and by first creating a disc image. In all cases they worked on my iMac but none of them worked on the DVD player. Only the DVD+RW is compatible with the player and it appears the DVD starts to load but can not finish the process. Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The iDVD production was made from scratch using Magic iDVD and some video files. The Map has no errors and there where no error messages.

Is there something I missed or is there a bug in iDVD 6.0.1?
The bug is probably the format you're burning to...
Use DVD-R. I'd recommend Verbatim DVD-R burned at 4x or slower. I'll bet that will play just fine...as long as the DVD player is relatively new (2-3 years old).

You can't boot OS X with a Windows boot device.
Internet Recovery is the next step. Follow ssls6's advice.

  • Need DVD to play on windows media player also?

I made a dvd of some footage and output as a quicktime movie. I then used the best DVD setting in compressor. Lastly I used toast to burn the dvd. The dvd will play on everything except the windows media player. How can I get the dvd to play in the windows media player also. I looked at the flipformac site and was wondering if that program will do it. What are you guys using?
    Thanks

    Hi David
My statement 'Windows Media Player is not a DVD video player' is not mine, it is a Microsoft definition. Windows Media Player is specifically for playing Windows Media Video files - WMV. It can also play mpeg(1) AVI and other sound files like CD audio.
For some kind of licencing/payments thing, WMP is not packaged with an mpeg2 codec and some other bits that make the DVD interactive. Microsft's advice is to use the software player that is packaged with the DVD drive.
What can be tried is the Microsoft utility which might let the video play but might not navigate correctly. Not all codecs are compatable with WMP.
My own suggestion for reliability is, to playback DVD Video always use the installed dedicated DVD player and never WMP.
What can be a problem is that the user has not installed the DVD software player which is often on a separate resources disc.

  • How can I save my iMovie Project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC and any DVD player

I have an iMac, purchased in January 2011. How can I save an iMovie project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC or any DVD player

I will give you a basic primer, not going to get to in depth, as far as parameters, size of project, or the storage size of your usb flash drive, etc.
    1. you have your finished iMovie project. Under iMovie>Share menu. Choose export using quicktime.
    2. make Movie self contained. This way your Mov, Mvi, etc files will be part of the movie and it can play without having to reference the events, because it is actually there.
    3. so, now on your desktop  ( or any where else set up quicktime to save your file) you will see a quicktime file.
Drag & Drop that file on to the icon of your USB Flash Drive, etc.
    4. Details that I omitted because I admit I am not well versed. Most Likely that quicktime file is larger than your USB Flash Drive. You have to use one of quicktime compression work flows, also if you open the just created quicktime file. It will open quicktime player and under the File>Export you have to options. I have a Movie that was 42GB 1080P, I exported it as a 720P, so it would still be playable on a large screen and now the new file was less than 2.5GB.
    5. Oh, no i just realized that the file should be playable on a PC, as long as the PC has quicktime for windows installled and you left that USB formated at MS DOS as it came originally, or a PC will not recognize it. Will it open up on your Blu-Ray Player that has a USB port, not sure. Since there is no menu. but, perhaps just pushing play will start movie.
Hope this is of some help.

  • Why does my Encore DVD not play in Windows Media Player v.11

My DVD's play properly in players and from various other DVD Software but not Windows Media Player v.11.  Most people I give my DVD's to view them on business computers, that only have WMP on them.  Is there a way to build an Encore DVD that will allow them to play in WMP?

You can always build a Flash "DVD". Other than that you may be looking in the wrong place. Microsoft has neatly avoided any MPEG-2/DVD licensing and merely uses the respective libraries of otehr DVD software on your system, so when no such thing is installed, it never works.

  • DVD does not play on VLC media player or Windows Media Player

Hi I've bought a set of 5 DVDs and played 1, 2 and 3 with VLC no problems. When it came to DVD 4 or 5 it decides not to play? When I open Windows Explorer the disc has the title etc but VLC seems to try reading it and nothing happens. No error message nothing.
I went back to try the other 3 disc and all are fine and plays as per normal. Are DVD 4 and 5 just faulty? I haven't got any DVD player with me to try so I won't know. Or is there a solution or error somewhere?
My laptop is bought in the UK but DVDs are Australia bought if that makes any difference?
    Many thanks.

Not all DVDs will play in XP Mode, mainly due to DRM restrictions.  The DRM thinks you've made a copy of the DVD and prevents it from playing.
Are you able to play this on your Windows 7 host, or do you see the same behavior there?

  • Dvd won't play on Windows media player

I have used idvd 6 to burn a final cut express movie onto a dvd. However, when I try to play it on my pc, it will not work. It works on a dvd player, but not Windows media player. Is there any way to make this work?
    Thanks!

HI there, I am too having this issue, I have never had this problem before. I always test the dvd in my windows p.c. to make sure it is viewable. I forgot to do it this time, and low and behold when I gave it to a few people, they were also not able to view it. 2 pc's in my office keep saying that it is missing an mpg2 plugin so can not play. The other pc, it just keeps playing the main menu, there is nothing for them to click to view it. Now mine at home will not play either, it has no menus on the screen, but it plays the menu music. Now my p.c. is up to date so there should not be any reason it will not play. I have burned at 1x, verbatim disc's etc.. It plays fine on my Mac, but even there I have just noticed that I used to be able to click with the mouse on each title to play. Now I have to scroll on the menu, then play from the dvd player control. Any help would be appreciated. They have been playing on a TV with the player though, thanks as always, Ileen

I haven't changed any settings regarding region codes

You may have run discs from different regions, these would be commercial DVDs. If so most DVD players need to be told what region the disc is from. Have you done this by chance, if you are not sure look at the region numbers listed on the commerical DVDs you have and see if some use different numbers.

  • DVD won't play back in bluray player

I just created a DVD in DVD SP, about 5 mins long with audio. It plays back beautifully on the computer, but my sony bluray player doesn't recognize it at all. I haven't tried on a standard DVD player, but I don't see how that would help. A previously made DVD plays fine on the player. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Dear Shawn,
Still no good. In a render last night, weirdly, even in my Mac the disk was unreadable and the warning said it was blank, but I rendered again and it works fine on the Mac. But on my SONY player, nothing.
I changed DVD SP to standard in the Preferences and re-created the project from scratch. I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes setting with no changes. Here is the breakdown:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
Estimated size: 2.79 GB/hour of source
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
              Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
              Format: M2V
              Width and Height: Automatic
              Pixel aspect ratio: Default
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
              Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
              Start timecode from source
              Aspect ratio: Automatic
                        Selected 16:9
              Field dominance: Automatic
              Average bit rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
              2 Pass VBR enabled
                        Maximum bit rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
              High quality
              Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
              DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I am at my wits' end. I have two weeks to get this done for a memorial for my late father so you see my desperation.
Do you have any possibilities left? I'd go ahead and sign up for the Pro classes at the Apple Store, but in NYC I'm afraid I wouldn't even get to see anyone in time for FCP and its suite.
    Thank you for any advice.

You would need to have burned the disc using iDVD or a third-party application such as Toast. Is that what you did?

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

  • DVD Studio pro 4 no longer builds a DVD that will play in any player, is there an update or comparable program?

DVD Studio pro 4 no longer builds a DVD that will play in any player, is there an update or a comparable software available? Or are there some internal fixes that I have not found.  Preferences that will allow a clean product to be delivered?

Thank you for your prompt reply.  I first import all my assets, build my DVD, which may include one or more menus, pictures, music, etc. I use the simulator to test all aspects of video before burning.  Making sure that the end jump works, if I add chapters, going to each chapter making sure buttons and end jumps for the chapters work.  When I am satisfied I then go to burn/format function and delete or reuse any folders that the computer advises.  The resolution is SD, display mode 16.9, Lossless linking, red laser, single, one side 12 cm.  Thats about it.  Haven't had a problem in the past just wondering what I could be doing wrong now. I am workingo on an imac, MAC OS X, 10.7.4, 2.93 GHz, Intel Core 17, Memory 8GB, 133mHz,DDR3.
Response I get is, unknown disc, please check disc again."

  • HP DVD PLAY AND BLU RAY PLAYER PROBLEMS

Hi guys, just had a few problems recently with my HP dvd and blu-ray software....
I have been using the software for about the last 2 years without problems, but recently i have tried using both DVD's and Blu-Ray discs, and they do not start playing either through autoplay (inserting the disc), or hitting the play button on the player.
I have tried updating from the menu, but whenever I try to do this my Internet says that "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded". However, I do not have any other problems downloading different files and other updates.
If anyone has experienced this problem before or knows how to fix it, please help me out!

Temporarily turn off your internet software. Download and SAVE the update to your desktop, disconnect your computer from the internet, then turn off your antivirus. Do not plug in any USB flash drives as this may transfer viruses. Install the software, when you're done, turn on the antivirus, re-connect your computer to the internet.
I have more HP devices than you'd expect.
1 HP TouchPad 32 GB with Android
    2 HP Touchsmarts (310-1000z and IQ527)
    2 HP Printers (J6480 and J5750)
    1 Laptop (HP DV6253CL)
Have at least some experience in each of those devices, and i'll do my best to help you.
    Kudos if I helped!
