DVD Transfur from i mac to External HD

I am a new mac user and was loading my DVD's onto the computer via mactheripper. Everything was fine until I tried transfuring them to a 300GB Seagate external that has been OSX formatted. It transfurs a gig or so and then locks up. Any suggestions?

The external HD might be set to Read Only on your eMac.  Try this:
If the external HD shows on your desktop, single click the HD to highlight it.  From the Finder Menu bar at the top of the screen, click on File, pull down and click on Get Info.  At the bottom of window that opens, under Sharing and Permissions, you might see something like:
System:  Read & Write
Admin:  Read & Write
User X:  Read Only
User X being your user account.
Good luck.

Is it possible to make a CD/DVD cover from existing Mac OSX software?

Depends on what you mean by cover and how elaborate you want it to be.
You could likely create one in TextEdit, but it wouldn't be simple.
I can't think of anything else bundled with the OS that would do that.
There isn't anything "purpose-made" for that task.

You will get better results if you use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and then drag the movie from the Movies pane of the Media Browser in iDVD onto the menu window.
Also I suggest you use this workflow which I learned from Bengt:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • HT202796 I can not copy, modify, any file from my Mac to external hard disk,  of the seagate brand (fast HDD Portable Drive)  I don´t know  if I need some software to copy and  modify files in my hard disk external ? Could you help me please?

    Hello I have a iMac with 3.4 GHZ intel core I7, memory 16 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3, and OS X 10.9.4 Software.
I have problems when I try to copy or modify any file from my MAC to MY PORTABLE DRIVE/DISQUE (external hard disk).
my external hard disk have the next features:
    brand: Seagate
    4TB
I do not know if I need some software such as: paragon or I need to configure my MAC,
    Please help me..
    Thanks a lot

Click on it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and check the format.
If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired, or install software such as Paragon NTFS on the computer.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; this may also happen for a flash drive which is about to fail.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Want to move time machine from a mac os external to larger drive?

I have been reformatting a 120gb (ex-ntfs) external drive to "mac os external (journal) . I simply want to move the backup(s) to a larger external drive. I have moved 9000 mp3's over to my Mac and the backup drive filled up fast. Being a ex-windows user since pre-Win 3.11 I am kinda intimidated , more just ignorant to Mac but trying to reformat my brain the MAC way.... Is it as easy as this? New Time machine drive will be a 250gb external "copy" the "backup.backupdb" folder to new drive? and then tell TM to use the 250gb drive? doubt it can be that simple... but... the only dumb question is the one u don't ask.

Here are the instructions to use Disk Utility for this:
You can duplicate the current backups to a different disk via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). You cannot use the normal "drag & drop" with the Finder, as that won't copy their unusual structure properly.
You can duplicate to a disk/partition of the same or larger size. You may be able to copy to a smaller one, but you might not. If the old (source) disk has ever been near full, the files may be scattered over it in a way that you can't duplicate them to a smaller disk/partition.
Note that you must duplicate an entire disk/partition to another entire disk/partition -- you cannot copy only selected backups, or backups of selected items, or merge two or more sets of backups. And if you have other items on the disk, they will be copied also (this is a bad idea: see item 3 above).
In addition, if your backups were made wirelessly, you cannot copy them to a directly-attached internal disk, or an external FireWire or USB disk, and continue making backups to that disk, or vice-versa. This is because backups made wirelessly are stored differently from those done directly.
Here's how to copy the backups from one disk/partition to a different one:
    a. Turn TM off, via TM Preferences, and de-select the drive (select "none"), quit System Preferences.
    b. Be sure to format the new drive correctly. See item #5 Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum. for detailed instructions.
    c. Connect both drives to your Mac, then open a Finder window. Make sure both partitions are shown in the sidebar (if not, from the Menubar select Preferences > Sidebar, and check the box to show +External disks+ in the sidebar). Leave the Finder window open.
    d. Start Disk Utility, select either partition (indented under the main drive line), and click the Restore tab.
    e. Drag the old partition to the Source box, and the new partition to the Destination box.
    f. Be sure to check the +Erase destination+ box, then the Restore button. This may, of course, take a long time.
    g. When the duplication is complete, note that DU has *changed the name* of the destination partition to be the same as the source. You do not want to leave it that way, so immediately rename one of the partitions. In the sidebar of the Finder window opened above, control-click (right-click) the one you want to rename. When done, look back at the Disk Utility display to be sure you renamed the right one, then quit Disk Utility.
    h. Go to Time Machine Preferences and select the new or renamed drive.

  • Transferring playlist from one mac to external hard drive- to another mac

Hi, a buddy made a playlist of music for me (about 3 days worth) of his music. We tried to download the list to his extenal hard drive so that I could then upload it to my itunes. However, whenever we tried to send the playlist to his external, the titles show up momentarily then are no where to be found in the external hard drive. Help
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

guess I didn't think of it as stealing music since all the music we were trying to copy is from cd's he purchased. What's the difference between transferring the file and me borrowing all his cd's and copying them to my Itunes?

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

    You need this:   http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/idvd.html#custom
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

    in looking around:
Samsung SE-S084D Turned out to be a "dumb luck " Solution. Got it at a local PC repair place and then also discovered it on Amazon [they have a newer one i think]. Works PCs as well. Mac Logo on the box.
My machine is 2010 and I burned less than 200 dvd's [disks from tv] I've only had one Apple componet fail on me since 1988 [hard dive for SE]. But the thought of having to give up the i5, have it opened and then hope for another 2 years...gives me pause.
The $60.00 Samsung gives me relief.
When plugged in to a dedicated USP port...I'm impressed with the speed.
Less than 20 min for the image and less than 20 for write-verify. Over 5 hrs of TV.
The 'Sam is good enough for now.

    Merry Christmas

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?
