DVD tray not openning

OS 10.5.2 will not open DVD tray with F12 key. It will if I mounted on my backup hard drive. How do I fix it?

Norm,
I haven't got a solution that restores eject the F12. I too have a PBG4 Aluminium and F12 does not open the tray (actually no tray it is a slot drive). Cannot say if it ever did eject. However just to the right of F12 is a an eject button and it works. Why not use that? There are if needed a number of other ways to eject. I prefer drutil commands in Terminal when I have problems.

    I have an early 2008 Mac Pro that has always treated me well and never given me any problems. This morning when I push the eject button on the keyboard it registers on the screen as usual BUT the tray does not open. Any ideas?

    sure----carefully pull down the little aluminum shutter covering the lip of the CD/DVD tray, then try the eject key. If it still doesn't work, try repairing permissions, maybe zap PRAM (command+Option+P+R held down for 2 chimes on startup, then released) . If That doesn't work, the DVD drive itself might be on its way out.  Replacement is simple, requiring a little time, and a #1 or #0 Phillips screwdriver.  the drive itself is an ATAPI/ IDE which may be hard to find. You can even use a PC DVD burning drive of the same type, if you can find one easily.  If you can't find one of that type, you can use an eSata drive with a bridge board that plugs into the back of the drive. there may be some eSata connectors on the logic board of your Mac Pro, but they are somewhat hard to get at, but not impossible. there is a screw at the side of the aluminum shutter which can be loosened a little bit if that's the problem, if not.....inserting a straightened paperclip into the hole at the front of the CD/DVD drive will release the tray enough for you to grab the disc, should there be one, from the tray....
    well, BRADFACTOR, hope this helped you in some way. Bear in mind, though that I'm not an "expert", at least in the official sense, though I have had some experience.

  • I reinstalled a new Hard Drive but cannot get the DVD tray to open to install the Mac OS?  How do I open the Tray?

    I reinstall a new Hard drive.  But I cannot open the DVD tray to install the OS?  All I get the the ? in the folder when the computer turns on?

    Hi copa1226:
    Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones.  There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices,  I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
    .....   Try this:
    1) Power off your mac pro.
    2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
    3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
    4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
    5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one!   Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
    6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
    7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
    8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
    9) You are done!
    10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.

  • Dvd will not open dvd player

    I just created a new DVD video using iDVD, but after burning the DVD and trying to play the DVD on any computer, it will not open unless I open the DVD Player first (I have my settings on DVD Player to automatically open DVDs). Any ideas?

    Hi
    Most common origin to this are
    • Use of Cheap DVD brand e.g. Memorex, NoName etc. - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in them)
    • Burn speed - I set it down to x4
    • Use of DVD-/+RW disks - I only use DVD-R as they also play on older DVD-Players (DVD+R don't)

  • DVD drive not opening

    HI,
    I have HP 430 notebook that I use rarely. The DVD drive on drive is not opening by pressing button on dvd drive. MY machine is power on. Not sure if I need any special driver to open dvd drive on machine. The default microsoft driver with windows 7 professional are already on machine.
    I also get a warning sign next to bluetooth adaptor in device manager. Please let me know if I am missing any driver and where to pick them from.

  • 3GS sim tray not openning, what to do

    3GS sim tray is not opening, what to do.

    Yeah, I have to agree with RoamingGnome...this sounds like more of a Jailbreak issue, not an Apple issue.  If you bought this phone from a legal distributor and just haven't upgraded your iOS since 3.1.2, I'd contact the place where you purchased it.  If you Jailbroke or bought it Jailbroken to get it Unlocked to use with any carrier, my best solution would be to search the net.  I'm pretty sure there is a current Jailbreak for up to iOS 5.1.1, but I'm not really up to date with that information.  I do know that you can legally now purchase a factory unlock from Apple, but I'm not sure if that's only with new purchases or if you can buy an Unlock for an older phone.
    My best solution would be to search your phone revision & iOS online and you should get what you're looking for.  Sometimes you can even just search YouTube and they'll have a step-by-step video showing you exactly how to do whatever you might need to get up & running again.
    It's pretty rough being without a cellphone, especially if it's your only communication device.  Hopefully this at least pointed you in the proper direction.

  • DVD will not open in Finder

    I just tired to put a blank DVD-R into my MacPro's drive - usually it opens and I can drag files to the disk to burn them, but this time the discs are reported as not-recognized. Oddly, I can burn w/ the disk if I use Roxio and other packages that run the drive. Anyone know anything about this?
    I've tried to reboot, can't think of anything else to try...
    [email protected]

    Have you tried different media (like a CD-R or a different brand of DVD-R)? When it is reported as "not-recognized", is that a dialog? What does the dialog say specifically?
    In System Preferences->CD&DVD's, what is the setting for "When you insert a blank DVD" popup? Set it to "Ask what to do" if it is not already. Then try to insert the blank DVD. Does the little dialog show up asking what app you want to open the disk in? If so, choose Finder.

  • Sim tray not opening

    Hi, i bought Iphone 4 from carrier and I found the sim tray can't get out
    I tried many times but same thing, then i went to carrier they told me this is out of warranty because sim tray corners little damage because I tried to pull it out
    can apple help me to replace it from Carrier ?
    it's only yesterday purchased
    Regards
    Ali

    My guess is that you didn't read http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
    Page 20 tells you how you should have removed the SIM tray. By not following these instructions you may have damaged it.

  • DVD tray won't open on Satellite C650

    Hi
    I'm sorry if this ques has been posted before, but I am having trouble getting my DVD tray to open without having to stick something in the small gap. When i try and open it normally, a little light next to the button just starts blinking orange.
    How do I solve this?
    Thank you

    Hi
    The CD/DVD eject button is NOT controller by any software!
    Pressing the button is an mechanical process!
    So if the eject button does not work and if you are not able to eject the CD or DVD using this button, then I would assume that this is an ODD issue and if your notebook is covered by warranty, I would recommend asking the ASP technician for an ODD check.
    In all probability the CD/DVD drive needs to be replaced.

  • Previous made DVDs now not loading

    Previous DVDs that I have made on my computer are not being recognized now.
    Back up of iPhoto, iDVD projects, iTunes back up. I have Sony, Imation, Verbatim
    brands and nothing opens anymore. They were all created on this computer.
    The only change was to install iLife 08 which went awful on install and finally had
    to do a clean install. I have done repair permissions etc.... I can put a BLANK DVD
    in and the computer reads it fine, I can burn photos to it, and read it .... but anything
    that I had made previously on a DVD will not open. CD's seem to be fine. I did have
    to do something in iDVD 08 to get all the past versions to show up properly. I also
    have a Apple laptop and all the DVD's open and play fine in that. But that only has
    iLife 06, didn't want to chance any problems with iLife '08 in that.
    May I have changed some setting along the way that has caused this?
    System Preferences are set correctly for when a CD DVD is installed.

    Old Toad if you happen to recheck this......
    I ran the hardware disk on my eMac and everything came up fine. I can install a new DVD and record on it just fine. I can put in a DVD install disk and it works fine, I can put in a store bought DVD movie and it plays just fine. I can put in a previous made CD and that works fine. It is just a previous made
    DVD from this computer that will not work. I did the safe boot, I set up another user, I did the compressed air in the tray. Nothing. And this all happened right after a clean install and the installation of iLife 08. I have no access to my photos, iDVD's previously made.
    Any more thoughts ????

  • Epson R220 DVD tray error - any ideas?

    I have a Epson R220 for printing DVD labels, using the Epson Print CD software.
    It worked for a while, but now the tray keeps ejecting with a message "CD/DVD tray not aligned". I'm careful to place the tray under the rollers, and align the marks.
    The manual says clean the rollers by feeding sheets of paper....didn't help.
    Any suggestions?

    Maybe that's the same thing that your process accomplishes.
    Sounds like a feeder issue on the printer and nothing to do with cleaning the print heads themselves (which the folded paper would help address in most cases).
    Regardless ... Glad it's working ok for you now.

  • Will not recognize jump drive nor allow me to open DVD tray

    Intermittantly, my G5 will not show my jump drive nor a CD on the desktop. At those times, it will not open the DVD tray either.
    When this happens, I can go to system profiler and see both the jump drive and the CD--it's just not showing up on the desktop so I can't open them. The only way I can get the tray to open and to recognize the CD and or Jump Drive is to reboot the computer.
    What is going on and why don't these show up on the desktop nor allow me to open the DVD tray.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • I can't open the DVD tray

    I can't open the DVD tray. There's nothing inside. I hear a sound (a grrrr) but it won't open.
    I had that 2-3 times in the last 5 years and I always managed to open it by pushing the "DVD ROM drive open button" while I restart but not this time.
    I also tried to put a paper clip in the little hole but that doesn't work either.
    In the Apple help site, they say push the "eject media key" on your keyboard; I didn't know where that is but I know now it's the F12 key; when I push it I hear a sound coming from the tray (like a electric screwdriver) but nothing happens.
    So what can I do ?
    I saw that Andrew Favret had the same problem in October and Don Archibald said:
    • Boot or restart the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This will bring up Startup Manager. Once Startup Manager has finished loading, press the key combo Command-. (Command-Periodkey). This should open the tray.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I tried the "Option" key. The Start Up Manager appeared: A display with my 5 drives in the middle, and a Right Arrow icon on the right.
    I did click on the right arrow and it started to load normally as it does when you turn the computer on.
    So I try the whole thing again and now instead of clicking on the right arrow, I tried the command and period key. I hear again, a sound coming from the tray and I see the icon for "eject" on the screen but nothing happens. Tried 5-6 times. And the F12 key don't have any effect at this time.
    If I had a disc in the tray, I'm sure the icons for the DVD drive will appear but the tray is empty.
    Not sure if there's a relation but I just upgraded that same day to a new version of iTunes (from version 7 to 8.0.2) and 3 other upgrades: QuickTime player (from 7.1.3 to 7.5.5) Plus Java and Security something.
    Usually there is a CD/DVD in the tray that won't eject, but you say the tray is empty. Are there any other users of you Mac, especially kids? Someone may have placed something in the tray that is causing the jam.
    Here's the usual fixes.
    First try a Restart while holding down the mouse button.
    If that doesn’t work, look at these links:
