DVD with dual layer on Toshiba Satellite L10?

Hi,
I've bought a Toshiba Satellite L10 recently. How do I know if the DVD burner has got the new dual layer system? It's neither written in the user manual nor on the DVD/ROM drive. There it says: DVD+ReWritable, whereas it says on the DVD I've bought: DVD+R DL. So if there's no "DL" written on my drive does that mean that is does not do dual layer DVDs?
I hope you can help,
Sunflower

Hi,
as far as I know the L10 can have only a CD writer or it has, as Quad says, a DVD Super Multi drive. In your case I think it is the Multi drive, which should be able to use DL.

  • Incompatibility issues with Dual Layer DVD+R  help?

I think I've made a serious mistake in believing I could author a Dual layer dvd for replication and sale on my own. I've spent over 14 months on this film, which is working perfectly in Encore, complete with extensive menus and transitional movies.
I've done my best to transcode the media in the most compatible way (keeping bitrate below 7mbps and using dolby digital audio format) BUT I'm still having bad luck with MOST dvd players.
The DVD plays properly on my cheap sony player, but both my toshiba and humax/tivo players failed to read the disc. (multiple tries/burns....or coasters, now) I've read that there are common problems with dual layer +R.
MY QUESTION IS: what is the BEST POSSIBLE WAY to author/burn this project for mass replication? Can I really achieve the result I'm looking for with Encore or will I have to give up and go to a professional authoring house with DLT capability?
Will I get the best result by burning from encore straight to disc OR burning an image or folder, then using a third party burning program?
Thanks SO MUCH for any responses. This process has been soul-crushing.

    >The DVD plays properly on my cheap sony player, but both my toshiba and humax/tivo players failed to read the disc. (multiple tries/burns....or coasters, now) I've read that there are common problems with dual layer +R.
Marc, the only mistake I think you are making is in assuming that set top players can handle a written DVD+R DL disc.
Support in older players is at best sketchy.
If the disc is working properly in at least one player, then you should be good to go.
Replication will produce a different type of disc. One that
    i will
    play properly.
Not all burners support book typing, and unless you know what you're doing here do not use these "fudges". It's best using Plextor, and even Benq burners. The freeware utility IMGBurn has this ability, and it also tells you what burners do this. I've never needed it personally, as my Pioneer burners & Denon players have no trouble with +R DL media.
What you really need is a player that you
    i know
plays DVD+R DL discs properly. Once you know your player is good with the format, then all other inconsistencies are player related, not authoring, and not your problem. There is simply no way at all you can guarantee any form of compliance with +R DL media, as there is nothing in the specs that says any set top player has to read these discs. Or -R DL where support is generally even worse.
Whilst most players will read -R single layer & +R single layer, again there is no mandatory requirement to do so.
You will need to get these
    i replicated
and not duplicated. Duplication (burning) will result in a lot of returns, and a lot of wasted money.

  • Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer 8.5GB Printable Discs - Anyone?

Just wondered if anyone had used Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer 8.5GB Printable Discs or even just DVD+R Dual Layer Discs in their superdrive and whether they had been compatible ok? Im thinking of buying some but want to ensure compatability before i buy because theyre very expensive!

i am burning as we speak, a verbatim dual layer dvd and have had no problem.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the question. You are probably using Verbatim DVD plus sign R DL, whereas Graham is asking about DVD minus sign R DL. Please qavvik, check out that little detail on the discs you are burning and let us know.
Graham's question is actually extremely timely for current iMac users. Anybody know for sure if these new -R DL discs are compatible with the current SuperDrives, such as the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K04L? Did Graham get a bad batch?

  • DR4-A and DVD-9 Dual Layer

    Hallo.
I purchased (December 2003) a DVD DR4-A but when I try to read a DVD in format DVD-9 (Dual layer I suppose) I am not able to read it, instead the other DVD media, not Dual layer are readable by DR4-A.
I tried to install my DR4-A in another PC but I obtain the same problem
I am not able not even to browse it from explorer.
If I try that media DVD-9 in another DVD optical I am able to see it.
So I think that the problem is on my DR4-A
I tried to upgrade firmware to 2.50 version but I have the same problem.
I have a PC with Windows XP Pro SP1.
    Can you hel me?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mario from Italy

It looks to me that you had bad luck and received a defected drive. I suggest you return the drive to your vendor and ask for replacement - I have the same drive and no problems with any DVDs. Moreover, do not upgrade to firmware 2.50 if you want to use CloneCD - this fw is a piece of  that does not support RAW DAO/SAO modes that are needed by CloneCD (and maybe some other soft) for copying some copy-protected CDs. The latest usable fw is version 2.30.

I've been burning DVD's from i-DVD to DVD+R Dual Layer DVD's for some time without any issues now.
I've just bought some DVD-R Dual Laer disks from Verbatim and my i-mac does'nt even seem to recognise that he DVD is in the drive & spits them out again.
Does anyone know if there's a way to check if my superdrive is compatible with these disks?

  • Dvd-r dual layer

    Hi all.
Which kind of encore version (if one) is able to burn dvd-r dual layer?
I have to burn dvd-r dual layer to allow the dvd to run on Mac.
Do you know any other possibility to produce a dvd dual layer that is visible also on Mac?
    thanks in advance

Since you're starting your search now, CS3 is the only current version, and since it's bundled with Premiere (for CS3), there is not trial. CS2 also handles DL DVDs and does a fine job of it, but it is not directly available, at least not from Adobe, or any of the normal reseller channels. This is just FYI only.

  • Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer & Power Mac G5

For some reason my G5 want read a Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer disc that my friend burnt for me. I put the disc in, and the computer just spits it back out at me. Is this normal? What can I do? I got my G5 in 2004 can newer G5s read Dual layers? My friend made it on a Power Book so I dont see why I cant read the disc.

Yes, they are relatively new. For more on the history of DVD, see this page:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I typically buy double sided DVD-R disks to burn more than 4.7 GB of data. These you flip over when you want more content than can fit on one side of a DVD. Alas you have to split up the content. Depending on the type of content this can be done by segmenting an image, or compressing the data itself and segmenting a compressed file. What's odd is that some disks which appear on the surface to be dual layer because of their single sided capacity, such as the Tiger installation DVD, are in fact readable by all DVD drives that are on Macs, whereas the commercial DVD+R DL is not. I don't know the difference between commercial and consumer grade Dual Layer disks, but there does appear to be one which makes them readable on Commercial grade whereas Consumer is not on older DVD players.

  • Correct way to burn DVD-R Dual Layer? Power Mac G5 or MBP Early 2008?

I have several software titles I have purchased and they are on dual layer dvd, I am using Philips DVD-R dual layer, I have a Power Mac G5 and an early 2008 Mac Book Pro, I have been unable to successfully burn a back-up on either drive. I am noticing dual layer seem to be an major problem across the board, but in the past this has been the place I come to get my answers.

  • Satellite Pro A30: Need compatible DVD 8x dual layer drive

    Hi,
have been researching this for some time now with no result. Are there any 8x dual layer dvd drives that are compatible with the bezel on the a30?

Did you take a look into the user manual?
Usually you should find the list of compatible drives in this document.
In my user manual I have found a compatible drives for my notebook.
I found the info that these drives could works on this notebook. But dont know what drive could handle the DL medias:
    Matsu****a SR-8177
    Matsu****a UJDA750
    Toshiba SD-C2612

  • Trouble with Dual Layer DVD in DVD Studio Pro

I am having some trouble burning a Dual Layer DVD in DVDSP.  About 1 out 3 discs are coming out unplayable on multiple players and some are freezing during playback (starting and stopping).  I have not worked with DL DVD's before and was wondering if there is a particular brand that might be better then another or if there are some settings I may be missing in DVDSP.
I am using Memorex Dual Layer DVD+R DVD's, my project is 7.1 GB's, and I am running DVD Studio Pro 4.  Any feedback or ideas would be appreciated.

    >I am using Memorex
That's the most likely cause of the problem.  Memorex is notorious for poor quality.  Try switching to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (now under the JVC brand).

  • DVD R replacement with dual layer

I've read there are some problems trying to replace the super drive in a dual 2.o G5 with a Dual Layer drive.
    Anyone have experience with this?
    Rick

    Anyone have experience with this?
    Yup. I've done three.
    I used the Pioneer 110A DL-Superdrive ($70 at fastmac.com).
Beforehand, download some drivers from "Patchburn" appropriate to your OS version (http://www.patchburn.de), and install them.
Then swap out the drives. Simple. Your Apple manual that came with the G5 has EXCELLENT instructions on removing/installing the optical drive.
Check the ID jumper config on the rear of the new drive to make sure it matches the old one. It's probably "drive select" which is no jumper installed, but check it anyway to be sure.
After installation, boot the Mac. Install the Patchburn drivers. Restart. Rebuild permissions (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!).
    Test the drive.
    Say 'Wow! That was easy."
Only problems I've had was a DOA drive that simply wouldn't read or write anything. Replaced it with a new one and all was well.
BTW - with regard to existing SL SuperDrive, due to circumstance I ended up using my new DL drive in an external FireWire box the first time I hooked it up.
It worked so well that I left it external and kept the old 105 SL-SuperDrive as the internal. Now I can burn two DVD's at one time (after duplicating my copy of Toast 7, of course).
So if you have an old, dead external hard drive in a box (or Jaz, or Syquest, or tape drive - anything with a working fan and power supply) you can buy a FireWire bridge board from Granite Digital and put your new drive (or your old one) in that external box.
Personally, I like having the two opticals.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions. If you need details about sourcing these components I've mentioned, please send me an e-mail and I'll send you the info.

  • DVD Playback Issues with Dual Layer media

I have been using DVDSP for years now, and have rarely had any issues with burning my final projects to DVD. Any playback issues have usually been issues with players and +or-R media.
I have recently upgraded to a MacPro, and have been really stoked about being able to burn to Dual Layer media. My previous G5 didn't have a DL burner.
I have a large project that fills most the disk, and everything seems great in the software, and when playing the media files on the computer. But when I burn to disk, I have huge issues with playback on different DVD players, computers, etc. I have stuttering with menu's, freezing, and stuttering with playback of video.
I read that the issue could be because of the speed I'm burning at in DVDSP, so I saved as a disk image, and used disk utility to burn at a 4x speed. This seemed to help, but when I got to the end of the movie I had huge issues with stuttering/playback quality. So I burned another copy from the same disk image, and it wouldn't even play in my DVD player.
When I open the Video_TS folder from the DVDSP Build, and play right off my hard drive in the DVD software player, I don't have any of these issues.
So I'm guessing my problem is either my DVD media I'm using, or the burners on this new computer. I've burned DVD's on both burners (yes I have 2) and I still have the same problems.
I am using Memorex DVD+R DL and they are 8x.
Can anyone offer me some advice here. I really wish I could just hit burn and have a disk work. DL media isn't all that cheap and I don't know how many coasters I can make and keep my sanity.

I used compressor and I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. The bit rate is avg 6.2 and maximum 7.7. And yes I used ac3 audio.
When you say lowest speeds possible... shouldn't a burner that says it burns at a speed work at that speed? I'm cool with burning at a lower speed to get this thing to work, but why have a burner that burns DVD DL at 8x speed, when it doesn't work? Shouldn't it work? Why is it that it won't work?
If I get Verbatim DVD+R DL, can I burn at 8x speed with those?
When I burn in disk utility I used the "varify burned data" and everything checks out ok. So why do I have this issue. Just curious.

  • Problems with dual layer DVD reading MBPro (2009)

    Hello,
recently i wanted to take a look at a dvd that came with a magazine (for pcs, but that shouldn´t really matter here) on my macbook pro from mid 2009 (see http://support.apple.com/kb/SP541) with the latest version of osx.
Unfortunately, it didn´t succeed to read the dvd. only ejected it after doing a little searching and making strange noises.
According to the technical specifications this macbook pro should be able to at least read dual layer dvds. I won´t even try to burn one of those, because after doing a little research on the www i found a lot of entries with people going insane with the burning capabilities of macs concerning dual layer media.
Unfortunately i couldn´t find anything on the topic in the forums here. Also no official statement whether macs can or cannot cope with dl media. In my opinion, if it´s specified in the tech specs, then the computer should also live up to the expectations.
Are there any suggestions on how to go about with the matter of dl media and macs? Any information would be much appreciated. Also a notice from apple would be nice, this seems to be a matter (given, although probably not of top priority) concerning quite a lot of people and machines.
    kind regards,
    Reinhard Sommerer

    Hello again,
well - thanks for the information. i would like to point out that the dvd i was trying to use was not for burning purposes. it was a medium that came with a magazine. out of my experience sometimes these work even better than home-burnt dvds, but that might be subjective.
anyway, tonight i gave it another try with the cleansed medium. apx. in the same condition as last time (had stored it in a safe place) and big surprise: this time it didn´t read neither side again. kind of a drawback - maybe tomorrow i´ll have more luck again.
so my hopes for an apple official to comment on this forum won´t be heard, i guess. although it appeared to me that last time here i had seen a user profile resembling an official apple profile. but i might be wrong, i´ll just keep on wondering about this so-called dl-drive.
    kind regards,
    reinhard

  • Backup to DVD doesn't span properly with dual layer media.

I attempted to use the backup feature in Itunes 7.0.1
After choosing backup to disc, it provided a warning that the backup would require more than one CD - and that's OK by me, so I went ahead and put media in the drive. It started and after filling the first disk, it stopped and said it was aborting because of an 'unspecified error?'
My DVD drive is capable of dual layer burning, and I use good quality media. It did successfully burn the DVD, but only part of the library was backed up onto the dual layer DVD I was using. I have used both this drive and this type/brand media succesfully on numerous other projects.
It looks like the backup routine fails when using dual layer media and backing up more than will fit on one media.
I could't acess the bug report paga so am posting it here.
I don't know if it's repeatable, because I don't want to waste any more dual layer DVD's.
Windows XP Pro, non remarkable system otherwise, P4 2400 - 1G memory no weird startup programs, no anti virus running. pretty much plain vanilla.
Just thought other might have the same issue.

  • Sun Virtual Box & Toshiba Satellite L10 - product recovery settings problem

    Hi-
I had a problem a while back with my Satellite L10 and was unable to get full recovery settings after installing Sun Virtual Box and ignoring Microsoft warnings.
I suspect this has now cloned my disk. Something is very very wrong. I am using Win 7 beta in the interim but would like my XP back.
My notes to Sun Microsystems are here:
Has anyone had the same experience or what does Toshiba recommend?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi -
Thanks very much for the advice.
It's really strange as the system runs through Win 98 options on booting the product recovery dvd but then gets you to a full & perfect toshiba L10 XP.
I reinstalled XP and went through the process you mentioned above (F8 etc) after installing - at least my safe boot mode options etc. are there.
My guess is that either the disk itself picked up on the cloning or something outside the HDD has been cloned or produced an 'image' of the previous HDD.
If I want to get a new product recovery dvd (as a next step in my investigation) can I download from the net or do I have to order from Toshiba (is this a good course of action?...).
My system can only burn cd's, but I could get someone else to burn a dvd for me if this is possible.
    Thanks....
