DVD won't play on Mac

I created a DVD from VHS tape using Studio MovieBox DV and iMove HD. I used MPEG4 file format. I then burned the DVD using iDVD 5. I used a DVD-R disc.
The DVD plays just fine on my standalone DVD player and my pee cee running Windows XP. But it won't play on my Mac unless I turn on the external drive where the video is stored. Otherwise, when I insert the disc in the SuperDrive I get a 'blank disc' message.
Is there some setting I missed somewhere?

You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

  • IMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's

iMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's. Other DVD/CD's are recognized.
My internal DVD/CD p-layer/burner stopped working 3 years ago like many other iMacs did.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is all red because I am ******!

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • Short content DVD won't play

I've had this problem for years, and I've finally decided to ask. Every time I make a short content DVD with under about 10 minutes of content, my finished Encore DVD won't play in some players.  The amount of data written by Encore is visibly small on the disc. I've noticed however, that if I take the same content, and master it in Nero rather than Encore, the content on the disc (burn area) is much larger and it plays just fine on every player.  Is there anything within Encore that I can change to eliminate this problem?
    Thanks for any thoughts.

"Probably" the reason nero doesn't have the problem is the same as for ImgBurn: it automatically pads the total size. I never remember to pad tiny disks anymore, because I have become dependent on the autopad!
Edit: I see John's second past! That's the other imgburn advantage here: let it figure out the addition!

Multiple dvds won't play.  Just make spinning noises for a few seconds then ejects.

Because this is affecting multiple DVD's it suggests a faulty drive. If you were willing to spend a few $ or € and purchase an external optical drive from any electronic shop, that would be a sound diagnostic step to take; possibly a solution and cheaper than replacing the internal drive if counting labour is a factor.

  • Cd/dvd won't play on win 7,

cd/dvd won't play on win 7, using hp touchsmart tx2, autoplay option is checked.  Have itunes installed also, does this have something to do with it?  I have used it recently for lightscribe and copying music to a blank cd...I am not getting any errors, it just won't play..

I am having similiar problems but on a HP DV6700 running Vista.
Can you explain "won't play"?  Does it show up in Device Manager?  Does it show up  in My Computer?
There could be a number of possibilities.  Lets try to narrow your resolution.

  • Help! dvd won't play in dvd player or on mac!

this is my first imovie creation. it's just a slideshow in imovie, that i've exported to idvd to burn onto a dvd. i have an external dvd burner, so i am saving as a disc image, and burning the file that creates. the problem is, once i burn the disc, the dvd does not work in my dvd player, on my mac, anywhere!
i've never done this before, but i think i have all the settings correct. should i be doing something other than burning that disc image file? many thanks for any answers or help!!!

    not on my dvd player
Your player would be considered pre-historic by today's DVD standards. I had a Sony of that age, which I gave to my neighbor. My friend had the same model and some of my DVDs played while others didn't. Seemed it didn't like some brands, like TDK. Since you're new to this, I'll give you the following "blurb" that should help you make some media decisions. You can take your DVD to a store and try it and buy a new player. I'd avoid Toshiba based on my experience with friend's players...
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), RiTek 4X; Verbatim 1-8X, RiData 8X, and PioData 8X, all white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData checked out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
    http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood Office Depot store, or:
    http://www.taperesources.com/
    http://www.newegg.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
b Here's some discussion about formats: http://www.macintouch.com/dvdproblems5.html#oct03 Be sure to read Joel Lingenfelter's experience
    Here's a great site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
    Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
    Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

  • DVD created with Encore won't play on Mac

    Hey,
I recently created a DVD with Encore. Everything went perfect, the DVD played flawless on a standalone player and with Power DVD and Windows Media Player on a Windows PC.
But now a client reported, that the DVD does not play on a MAC using Apple's DVD player.
We rechecked it and the same error occured.
The Popup says that the Copy protection of the dvd could not be veryfied.
I burned it using a regular DVD Burner, so there can not be any copy protection, right?
What can I do, so my future DVDs will play everywhere?
    regards,
    Can

    >can not be any copy protection, right?
That is correct, you may not burn a DVD with copy protection

What brand of blank disc, and what burn speed?
Some people "scoff" at the idea, but others here advise to use one of a few brands of blank disc... and to burn at the slowest possible speed setting so the "laser holes" made during the burn process are well shaped
What I always do is create an ISO out of Encore and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Use Taiyo Yuden single layer or Verbatim Two layer Or Falcon Pro for inkjet printable Two layer

  • DVD won't play in Macbook

    Hi,
I have a dvd I purchased from my yoga instructor (so produced professionally (but not that professionally). When I insert the disc into my mac, it whirrs and I get the following error:
    There was an initialization error
There was an error reading from disc. IT might be scratched or dirty. [-36]
And that's it. The disc won't play in my dvd player on my tv, but that's not unusual as it's a cheap replacement that doesn't play everything. It does play immediately on my work pc. I know they're video TS files, which I understand can have trouble playing on a mac, but that I can't even read anything on the disc is weird (and my work computer is beyond a mess right now, and it just plays the disc like it's nothing)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to be able to do my yoga on the road.
    Thanks!

    Try VLC.

  • DVD won't play

I used DVD studio pro after exporting for DVD in FCP7. This created a M4v vid and an audio file. I made a menu in dvd studio pro which then has two medias to choose from, a still and the video.
In a computer (a mac) it is playing fine, however I tried it in a DVD player and also an Xbox 360 and it won't play. On the DVD player/TV the message 'wrong disk' appears. For the xbox there was also an error message (but can't remember the wording as it was the other day).
I have selected it to be region 2 (I'm in England) and the DVDs are DVD-R, 16x speed. Is there any question of the DVD's I'm using not being good enough quality to hold a menu or am I selecting something wrong? I'm a bit stumped as to what the problem could be, any ideas would be appreciated
    Many thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
I would go back and use one of the DVD templates in compressor encoding for this is in mpeg 2. I know DVD SP has a prblem with H264 which is another flavor of QT, it may have this problem with M4v as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dvd won't play on pc's

Using the 150 minute 3.5 bit rate encode in compressor burning a dvd in dvd studio pro yields a dvd that plays on mac systems and dvd players but will not read on a pc. Why won't the PC read the Video and Audio TS files on the dvd?

there are countless reasons for this, some ideas are:
the computer may not have a DVD drive-many older machines only have a CD drive
it may be a single format drive -if your disc is -R and the drive is +R the disc wont be read
it might not have a software DVD player installed on the machine (Win DVD or Power DVD)on many computers this has to be installed separately
on some machines the autoplay setting is disabled, the software player has to be manually started
is the computer capable running DVD video, fast enough processor, enough RAM, compatable graphics card and display etc

  • Many File Types dragged to iDVD, burned to DVD, won't play on DVD player

I have made a recording on Camtasia (video, pictures and audio). My goal is to make it into a DVD that plays on standard players. Any format I have saved the file to is not working.
Here's what I have done so far:
From Camtasia I have selected Advanced Export and saved it as a MPEG4. Then learned that MPEG are not recognized by many DVD players.
Then I did an Advanced Export and saved the file as Quick Time. Moved it into iDVD, burned the disk and again the disk won't play on either of my DVD players.
I have done another Advance Export and saved the file as an AVI but now only the first 3 minutes of a 30 minute video are being captured.
I know everyone can appreciate that each of these burn processes take a lot of time. I am doing them only to be disappointed (aggravated) that they won't playing on my DVD players (I have tried two). I am using Verbatim DVD +R.
If someone uses Camtasia and iDVD that would be ideal. But at this point, I'd also be willing to try another program just to get the job done.

    Hi Vicadea
Welcome to apple discussions. I've never tried Camtasia for Mac. Apparently it's not working very well for you even when you export as a QuickTime movie. I don't know what to say other than it seems like fairly pricey screen capture software ($299) just to have it not work as you expected on multiple attempts.
For much less money and much more reliable results I'd recommend the following for screen capture instead:

Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

  • Widescreen DVD won't play?

I made a dvd in widescreen format in iDVD 5 and now it won't play on the customers PC and DVD player. It plays fine on my mac and at home on my older Sony DVD player. Is it the widescreen format that is the problem for my customer here? He said he heard sound on one of the players.

I made him a new one yesterday and it worked so I guess it was something wrong with the disc.
