Hi,
DVD-R and CD-R are two different things. 7 years old, most likely it only supports DVD+R. Please try DVD+R.

  • Superdrive cannot recognize blank DVD-R

I have a black MacBook that is around 6 months old. I have never had a problem with the superdrive until recently. It can recognize and read DVDs, CDs, and Blank CDs but CANNOT read blank DVD-Rs. It will spin the DVD for a while then eject it. I have tried different brands of DVDs and none work. Is this a problem with my superdrive that Apple needs to fix or can I do it?

A shot in the dark, but these aren't DVD-R DL discs, are they? The original Macbooks can't write to Dual-Layer discs. They'd say DL on the package somewhere, and cost several dollars per disc.
If that's not the issue, then yeah, I think you have a bum drive. I'd take it in while it's still under warranty.

  • HP DVD Writer 740b not recognizing DVDs

My 740b will not recognize DVDs. I have no problems with CDs but any DVD I put in the tray isn't recognized. I initially thought the problem was with the DVD+R I was using but I also have a Slimline s3132w with a DVD writer installed and it burned and read the same discs with no problems. I tried several commercal DVDs (movies) and when I try to play them I get a no disc in drive error. I also have a Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S DVD ROM on the same system and have no problems what so ever playing the same discs. I have tried replacing the ATA data cables post attempting the trouble shooting tips given on the support web page. I have upgraded the firmware hoping this might alleviate the problem with no success. As I stated before this problem is only with DVDs, the drive has no problems what so ever with CDs. I have a feeling the problem my be with my updating to Windows XP SP3. I had done so before but removed it because my Linksys Wireless Adapter(PCI) wouldn't function with it installed. That problem has been repaired and now this. The system the drive is installed in is as follows:
     HP a1203w
                      cpu: Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.2ghz
video: ATI 9550 w/256mb video memory
audio: Sound Blaster Audigy Z2S Platinum
             boot drive: Seagate ST340014A 40GB
    secondary drive: Seagate ST3250620A 250GB

OK chalk me up too to the list of users whose HP DVD Writer 740b cannot "see" blank DVD's and CD's.
Full marks to HP in that I am still smoothly running a Pavilion Media Centre PC EG211AA-ABG m7288a. I find the older plug compatablity useful and have beefed up RAM making it still a powerful "retro" media machine after all these years.....
However after a power failure caused a disk error that trashed my Windows XP and while it restored (as in full reset) like a trooper I took the opportunity to do a clean upgrade to Windows 7 (64bit) seeing as XP is no longer supported. And yes my HP DVD Writer 740b cannot detect blank DVD's and CD's although it can read those with content. It seems to be acting more like a CD ROM drive than a Read Write drive.
I have tried ALL the suggested fixes to no avail and yes my "shell detection" service is operational and on automatic.
But here's the rub as it were. My HP Support Assistant assures me that I have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and running ED24 firmware. So I was hopeful when I found that there was an HP upgrade from the ED24 firmware (sp26595.exe - DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 740b Drive Firmware Update ). HOWEVER even if I run it in XP compatable mode it returns the message that I do NOT have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and therefore no upgrade is required.
The label on the front of the drive is "LightScribe DVD +/- Writer / CD-Writer".
Is the HP Assistant wrong in identifying it as an HP DVD Writer 740b? Also could the drive be getting confused thinking a blank disc is a lightscribe disc in upsidedown ready for printing? I have to try and find a way to reload the LabelPrint software (have the LSS) that was lost when I upgraded to Windows 7. Probably can't retrieve it from the old XP recovery disk.
Any NEW thoughts (especially as to why firmware upgrade does not see the drive) most wrlcome as apart from this one little thing the Pavilion is performing like a trooper and is an excellent advertisement for the durability of HP products (which is why we brought 3 HP laptops as well.
    Hopeful thanks in advance.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • DVD drive cannot read some of my data dvd's

When I put in some of my data dvd, it reads it as a blank media.
It is strange. I can read data of the exact same DVD in another mac computer.
The problem is I can read some, but some I cannot read. Burning is no problem / no errors.
Any thoughts would be great! Thanks

    Wow, that's interesting.
I haven't had a problem with reading discs in my Powerbook (yet to really use the DVD drive in my MBP), but my old 1999-vintage iMac DVSE with it's DVD-ROM drive often won't read burned DVDs. It has no trouble with commercial discs, or burned CD-Rs, but it fails to read DVDs on a seemingly random basis. Indeed, I had been importing video on my Dad's G5, and burned it to DVD-R (Verbatim). The iMac wouldn't read the discs, while all our other DVD reading Macs would.
I wonder if it's not the write strategy? I know different drives/applications have various methods for burning discs. See Wikipedia's optical disc article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opticaldiscdrive

  • Help :( DVD Drive will not read Blank DVDs but movie and data DVDs ok.

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
I know a lot may say it's a bad batch, but I bought a new batch, Memorex vs. Verbatim and nothing.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?

  • Drive does not read blank DVD's (but reads all else)

I have a set of DVD+RW's and DVD+R's that when I put them into my drive, they do not pop up on my desktop. When I insert blank CD's, they work, and when I insert music CD's and movie DVD's, they all work too.
But the wierdest part is DVD Studio Pro will burn to the blank DVD's, even if finder doesn't see them.
I have my defaults set to "open in finder" for new disks. Any idea why this ain't workin?
I got the default CD/DVD drive that came with my mac

UPDATE: After hours of searching and reviewing this problem, it appears it may be due to third party burning programs, however this poses another problem. My laptop came with Roxi EMC 8 which i removed some time ago, it appears using other third party burning software causes comfilcts which may be causing my problem. I contacted Roxio but they have taken the "we are not able to help" stance due to the software being an OEM and came with teh laptop and they say I need to contact HP, which i obviously have with no success so far. Due to me removing Roxio and not having a disc to reinstall Roxio to see if this corrects the problem (and at this point i would just use the Roxio software reluctantly just so i can have my laptop back) I am stuck and it appears no one knows anything on how to fix it, Roxio will not help but I am hoping HP will since according to Roxio, this needs to be supported through HP. HP, can you please help me, i cannot use my CD/DVD drive most of the time and it appears you are my only hope. Here is what i got from the Roxio website about how it needs to be handled by the manufacturer, in this case HP: "If you have an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) version of Roxio software, please note that it is supported by the vendor that bundled or installed the Roxio product with their hardware or software. For more information about OEM support policies, please read the article What is OEM software? " Please help HP, you have to have an answer to this, is there a place I can download the Roxio software that came with my laptop or is there a Roxio Uninstaller that would completely remove the program as there are bits still threre, my laptop is a HP DV7-1245dx. please help.........

  • MacBook does not read blank DVD

I've been having this problem since yesterday. I've been using the same brand of DVDs for the last five months and have used Toast to burn quite a few DVDs.
Since yesterday, I've been experiencing this problem: I click the burn button on Toast, and insert the DVD. It fails to read it and spits it out.
I've tried running PatchBurn 4, and Reset the PRAM. What happens then is, I can mount the blank DVD on Finder, but when I try it with Toast, it doesn't work.
I then tried mounting it in Finder, started Toast, and clicked burn. I then got this message from Toast:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
    Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
Blank CDs mount without a problem, so do DVDs (same brand) that I had previously burned using Toast, as well as DVD movies.
What could be wrong? How could I fix it?

Wow! I've got the same problem. I was looking for a solution and found your post. This is my brother's kids computer (Macbook) so I don't have much history using it but I did burn a dvd on it around Christmas. Today, no luck. I'm using the same Taiyo Yuden dvd-r 's I used at Christmas and use all the time on my iMac. I can play a dvd and read/burn a cd but if I stick one of the blank dvd's in it just makes and effort to do something and then spits it out. It doesn't open in finder, work with disco or idvd. I guess the whole stack of dvd's could be bad but I doubt it. Tomorrow I have an appt. with a genius to remove one of the screws (crooked and stuck) that holds the ram door (bracket) in place. I'll ask him/her about the dvds when I'm there and post back. Anyone else have suggestions.

  • Cannot detect blank DVD+R

My mac can detect CD(with data), blank CD and DVD Video.
When I inserted blank DVD+R into my drive, there is sound of running but it ends with automatically eject the Disc.
    May I know why?
    Thank you.

Michele, just to slightly correct JMVP's post, many of the older superdrives do not support DVD media. However many of the newer models do support it. It sounds like your eMac is an older model and JMVP is correct in that your drive will not be able to use those disks. But my 1.25MHz eMac model does indeed have a Superdrive that supports both formats, although some applications (particularly iDVD4) may still not be able to use disks even with the right drive.
If you want more info on your particular drive, go to the applications folder, then go into the Utilities folder, then open the Terminal program. At the prompt, type the following: drutil info
You will then get info on your optical drive. For example, mine shows as follows:
    Vendor Product Rev
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D A707
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    SupportLevel: Apple Shipping
    Cache: 2000k
CD-Write: -R, -RW, BUFE, CDText, Test, IndexPts, ISRC
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, BUFE, Test
    Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
As you can see, my particular Pioneer model supports media. If yours is an older one, then the DVD-Write line will now show support for media.

  • Mac Pro doesn't read DVDs, show them as blank DVDs.

I am running an older Mac Pro with OSX 10.6.8 software. I have been trying to play DVDs through my internal disk drives but everytime I insert them my mac shows them as blank dvds in the finder, even though they play on other machines. I do have an external disk drive set up as well that does read the disks just fine.
I have read through many different forms from different sites and have found similar issues but no solutions. I have tried updating, blowing out the drive with a can of compressed air, yet nothing makes a difference. At first I had thought that maybe the drive had gone bad, however this is happening to both internal drives at the same time and therefore makes me belive that it is a software issue.
As I said, my mac recognizes both drives (SONY DVD RW DW-D150A) but shows the disk as a blank disk with no data on it. I use my disk drives daily and have not done anything new that would have changed the software process.
Please comment if you have any solution. I have yet to find anything that remotely answers my questions. Thank you.

Maybe the upper and lower filters must be removed in Windows registry... Follow the instructions in this Microsoft article:

  • Help needed! T40 DVD driver cannot read DVD

    Dear Expert
My DVD driver cannot DVD. The DVD driver icon in "My Computer" does not show the name of the DVD and when clicked, shows "no DVD inserted".
    But it can read CD.
Thanks very much for your help and advice in advance,
    Cath

there is a possibility that the laser associated with the DVD reader is no longer functional, while your CD reader laser still is, as these two lasers are different.

    Hi,
I just got a leopard DVD, and Im trying to upgrade the bootcamp drivers in Vista from the DVD, and I just realised my MBP cant read Dvd's in Vista.
It will spin up the disc, and when i click the Dvd drive, it ejects the DVD.
    Anyone experiencing this?
    Cheers

Ok, so this was done by Apple by purpose?
To clarify slightly what others have said, Apple licences the grey system discs that come with a Mac for use only with that specific Mac, not for use with any other Mac, even one of exactly the same model. So using them with any other Mac violates the terms of the license & should be avoided. The installer on the grey discs enforces this in part by checking the model of the Mac when it is run & refusing to install anything if the Mac is not the correct model. It displays a warning message that the disc cannot be used with that Mac & the only available option is to quit the installer.
Beyond that, while the grey discs may in fact include & install drivers for the hardware in other, older Mac models, they cannot include ones for Macs using hardware newer than the release date of the Mac they came with. In this case, the other Mac can't even start up from the installer disc & it freezes with a kernel panic before it can run the installer. This seems to be what happened here.

  • CANNOT READ VIDEO DVD'S

I had no problems until yesterday. Now Blank DVD's are still recognized and I can burn on them. DVD's with data files and photos also OK. However, video DVD's show error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I tried to reinstall OS 10.4.7 but got error message.

Hi Daniel: Thanks for the idea but that did not work. I talked to Apple support and they suggested complete initialization. Seems as though 2 to 3 days work is a big price for a smallish problem. Like many others, I have 100 GB of software and files!! I'll talk to them again today.

  • Sattelite A30-404: DVD player doesnt read some DVD's

    Hi,
    I have a Sattelite A30-404 and recently I installed a new firmware update for my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112. (page can be found [here|http://nl.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_driver_details.jsp?service=NL&selCategory =2&selFamily=2&selSeries=153&selProduct=518&langua ge=33&selOS=10&selType=all&yearupload=&monthupload =&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode=allMachines&search= &action=search&macId=&country=28&selectedLanguage= 33&type=all&page=1&ID=46804&OSID=-1&driverLanguage=42]
Since then i can't read some DVD's I write, mostly DVD of 4gb+, I can, for example, perfectly read a 1,3gb DVD with 3 multisessions.
However, other computers can read the DVD's that I can't.
    Help would be appreciated.

Possibly the new firmware does not contain all informations about all DVDs.
Do you know what firmware is or what informations it contains?
The drive firmware contains single informations about the medium which can be used, which burning/read speed is supported, what medium manufacturer is compatible, etc
Possibly the new firmware contains other info as the old one and therefore the CD/DVD cannot be read correctly.
I think in such case you have to test different CDs/DVDs and try to burn with different speed.
