DVD writer for Ibook

HI All
My iBook has a Combo writer (CD RW/DVD player) I'm thinking of getting an external DVD writer and am wondering if I can use any External, or does it have to be specifically for a mac?
Andy

I would guess that "any" is too broad because you are surely going to find incompatible ones.
I would suggest looking at LaCie drives. They have been making Mac compatible drives for years.

Thanks, A Brody.  Don't know what the PRAM battery is.  Here are more details of the fault ... Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem).  The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated.  The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be!  Does this fit your PRAM battery theory?  If so, please explain more.  Thanks.

  • DVD Writer for Sun Fire V440

I was wondering if anyone had found a DVD writer that will work with the Sun Fire V440. I would like an internal drive if possible but an external device would also be acceptable.

    Hello,
the V440 uses a slimline drive like these ones in notebooks.
Sun doesn't offer a slimline DVD writer (only full-height).
You might be tempted to install a slimline DVD writer for notebooks or server, but you have to keep two things in mind:
    - Installing non-Sun or unsupported components voids your warranty/service contract.
    - Slimline drives have no jumpers to select master/slave or cable-select . All drives use cable-select (or reverse cable-select). This setting is determined by the firmware of the drive.
If voiding the service contract or warranty doesn't bother you, get a drive from a dealer that is able to flash a new firmware to the drive or can sell a drive with the correct non-Sun firmware (and the correct setting cable-select or reverse cable-select).
Regarding the brands or types of DVD drives used by Sun, review the Sun System Handbook.
Using an external DVD writer in an USB enclosure might be possible, but the integrated USB controller (of the V440) is only USB 1.1 (supporting dual speeds of 12 and 1.5 Mbits/sec) which is insuficient for a DVD writer.
I would recommend that you browse the messages in the solarisx86 Yahoo group.

  • Which DVD writer for 12" iBook?

    Hi,
I'm after a DVD writer to use with my iBook G4 1.33Ghz 12". Can anyone recommend any brands that work particuarly well with an iBook?
At the moment I am leaning towards either a LaCie external writer or a Pioneer or NEC internal unit, placed inside a Firewire enclosure. Are these good choices?
Also, I've noticed that newer DVD writers have a SATA rather than ATAPI interface - will either work with my iBook?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Fungolo, Welcome to the discussion area!
A SATA drive will not work internally on the iBook.
If you get an external FireWire enclosure for a SATA drive, it will work with your iBook.
ATAPI is just another termo for ATA.

  • Need replacement DVD writer for M70-191 .

My DVD writer on my M70-191 (a Ma****a UJ-8415) is refusing to recognise most CD's and fails when trying to burn DVD's, with various errors. Tried different types and different burning software. Reinstalled drivers, cleaned drive. No luck.
So, I'm looking for a new drive .. where can I buy a suitable replacement?

    Hello Steve
First of all I think you should buy the same drive. Doing this you will avoid eventually compatibility problems. I have Satellite M70 too and the optical disc drive is really good one.
I recommend you to use Google and you will find many online shops where you can order new ODD.

  • Portable dvd writer for IMac

    Hi,
I am fairly new to the mac world of things, and my current imac is the built in cd-rw however I want to use a portable firewire dvd-writer. The difficulties I have is that there seems to be only one model list and I want to know if most will work? (e.g. are they plug and play) the only application I want to use it with is idvd.
any help would be appreciated and suggested model that you know work?
    thanks
    jamie

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply.
Nope with a cd in or out this drive is just not recognised which is a real shame.
Looked at various solutions and believe it may be a power issue?
The drive powers up ok but is just not showing on the system profiler.
Any ideas or halo would be most welcome
    Thanks in advance.

Howdy! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
I have a good opinion of LaCie burners. I have had one for over two years now with nary a problem. I used it with a PB G4 12 inch model. It comes bundled with Toast Titanium, which is really good burning software, IMO.
As far as system specs, check out LaCie's website, but I think anything above 10.2 would be supported.

  • DVD-RW or DVD+RW for iBook?

What type of DVD (-RW or +RW) will work for burning photos on my 4-yr.-old iBook running OS X 10.4.10? Staples recommended the -RW, but my iBook spits it out after trying to read it.

I'd strongly recommend an external Firewire, tray loading, burner rather than an internal superdrive in a situation like this unless you have a frequent need to burn discs "on the road".
A Firewire external burner will be much faster than an internal drive and will probably also handle a wider variety of disc types and brands. (In my own experience using Firewire for an external burner on a Mac is also much faster than using USB - even USB2)
The "slim line", slot loading, external drives look pretty but are slower and have more problems with disc compatability, than tray loaders.
I personally use an external FW burner (A pioneer drive inserted into an external FW case) in preference to the superdrives in any of our Macs. If you don't want to assemble such a thing yourself (the cheapest way to go), then have a look at something like the ones at http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MRFWU2D112/ and http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VLFWU2D112/ for a couple of good quality drives at reasonable prices.
    Cheers

  • Ext CD writer for iBook won't write

I bought my sister a used iBook (Graphite Clamshell with 1 usb/1 firewire, 467 mhz) a year ago so she could email, make cd's etc. It came installed with system 10.3.9.
We quickly learned that it wouldn't write CD's which was a bummer. So this Christmas I bought her a LaCie cd-rw external drive so she could make cd's.
The computer recognizes the drive, but it will not write cd's. When I look at the drive in Disk Utility, it says it is "read only."
The install cd that came with the drive seems to only include apps for PC's and the documentation seems to indicate that macs need nothing further to make it work.
    What are we doing wrong?

    Hi, Eric.
You may want to try posting in the iBook (colors) Forum.
You have posted in the iBook G3 (Dual USB) Forum (the one for the first all-white iBooks).
I would also suggest checking out LaCie's website for the possibility of new drivers for Macs.
    Good luck!

  • Problems using SONY 810UL/T dvd writer with ibook

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble using the above drive with my dual USB on 10.3.9 and was wondering if anyone else may have a solution to this. The os doesn't seem to recognize memorex16X DVD+R discs (i'm not sure if this is a disc issue or a drive issue but..see later) i.e. it doesn't show up on the desktop (I've tried this with multiple discs). Then when I try to open the tray using the button on the burner, nothing happens. So I do a disktool -e disk2 to eject the disk. I insert the disk again but holding down optioncmdI while inserting the disc ala article 30878 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30878). A window pops up: You inserted a blank DVD. Choose what to do from the pop-up menu. I press ok, the disk ejects and I get message: This disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
    iBook G3 500   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Tah.
    Two suggestions:
    1) Avoid Memorex discs if possible. I dn't know how they go in the Sony burners, but users of Panasonic (Matshita) and Pioneer drives I know have had problems with them.
    2) See if Patchburn helps - see http://www.patchburn.de/download.html
Patchburn gets many third party burners running which are otherwise not supported by Apple. In your case you will need the Panther version , of course.
    Cheers
