DVD Writer Upgrade Questions

I have a few questions about upgrading my DVD+-RW Drive that I cannot seem to find anywhere on this wonderful world wide web of ours.
What model are the superdrives currently going in G5's?
Does anyone know if the Pioneer DVR-R100 would be compatible with my pretty much stock G4 MDD?
I've read that the Pioneer DVR-610 is the same drive as the DVR-R100 but wihout all the software. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?
I also read conserns about the size of the tray on this drive, but I'm guessing the person was refering to the door, and not the actual tray. He said he had to cut the case of his PC to make it fit, and if the tray is any bigger than "standard" I'm guessing it would come out of the MDD doors.
Thanks a lot in advance!!!

In an MDD, you need to remove the drive tray faceplate of most new drives (one poster indicated that the new NEC drive did not need this, but Pioneer drives will). This OWC tech center page illustrates how-to.

  • GSA-H60L DVD Writer Firmware Update Question

    Hello all.
i have a dvd writer here that needs to be updated.
    The model number is HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GSA-H60L.
The trouble is that the firmware updater needs a Windows Vista 32 bit system to work, but i don't have one available at this time.
Is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks.

  • I am considering purchasing a new Mac desktop. I have, at present, a Liteon 851S ext CD/DVD write and a Maxtor 3200 USB ext hard drive. Will these work with a Mac desktop? My local Apple store could not answer my question.Happy New year to all.

I am considering purchasing a new Mac desktop. I have, at present, a Liteon 851S ext CD/DVD write and a Maxtor 3200 USB ext hard drive. Will these work with a Mac desktop? My local Apple store could not answer my question.Happy New year to all.

Yes the Mac can read that drive but you would need to Copy the data off of it to the Mac as apposed to Move, which implies Deleting them from the drive as they were transferred from the external to the Mac. Since the Mac can Not Write to NTFS drives it can't Delete anything as that is really a Write operation, IE Making changes to the NTFS formatted drive.
Once you have that Data on Both your New Mac and you Older Windows PC you can format that drive to work on both system.
If you want to and plan on doing that post back and I'll explane how, it is simple but should be done on a Windows PC.
If you only plan on using it on the Mac from now on that is fairly simple also and is done on the Mac, Once you have the files from it stored on the Mac.
Yes you could burn those photos to DVD but that is just a waste of DVDs, you don't need to.

  • Qill my mac accept any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD writer?

    Hello,
I'm currently seeking to upgrade my Quicksilver's 1x Superdrive to a newer, faster DVD writer. I was looking at a Lightscribe 20x DVD writer to transform the painfully slow burning sessions into quicker put-on-DVD archival making.
+(RAW files take a lot of place on a HDD and slow burning sessions are now the weakest link in my workflow — a new DVD burner is a must until I change my whole computer somewhere in the following year...)+
Now since most online retailers provide only minimum information about their products, you generally know which versions of Windows will support the drive, but when it comes to Mac OS X... usually, there's nothing to confirm that the drive will work on a Mac or not!
Now the question is: will any IDE/ATAPI interface DVD burner fit in my G4 Quicksilver 2002 dual 1.0 GHz or do I need to look for a drive that specifically supports OS X? (Like an external USB / Firewire drive, for instance).
Any feedback on that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • My dvd writer is not working. 3000 C300

I have been not been able to get my dvd writer to write on either +/- dvd disc. Its says that the disc is not compatible with the drive or it will say that the drive is not recognized that I may need to update the drivers firmware. I have a 3000 C300 and I did upgrade it from Vista to Win7. Not sure if the dvd writer worked before this upgrade i never tried to burn a disc with the Vista. If anyone could help me that would be great. I really don't want to try and dismantle this computer and replace the writer all together although I really want to replace the processor on this system. I just is not something I really want to do so please if you can help me with this that would be great

  • LG external dvd writer stopped working

Hi, I have an LG GSA-E40N external dvd writer connected to my eMac via usb2.
It was working fine from new at the beginning of June until the other day when I upgraded from 10.4.3 to 10.4.10. Now, my eMac won't recognise the LG drive at all in either the powered usb2 hub it was connected to originally or when connected direct to the computer - shows nothing connected to that port when it's plugged into the computer.
I took it back to the shop where, unsurprisingly, it worked straight away with a Windows system so it's not a leads problem.
So the obvious answer seems to be the upgrade to 10.4.10 broke support for the writer somehow but the question is, is there a way to get my eMac to work with this LG writer again under 10.4.10?

    thewiccaman,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
There have been a number of reports of people having problems with USB or Firewire access to external drives after updating to 10.4.10 (balanced against reports of previously unusable drives that now work, not that that's of any consolation to you). It appears that some of the 'minor' tweaks Apple included in 10.4.10 to more closely match the published USB and Firewire standards cause problems with manufacturer's devices that are themselves slightly off the standards.
Although external DVDs should be recognized in 10.4 without any additional software, you can try checking the LG website for any mention of firmware or driver updates for your particular model drive.
You may want to resort to dropping down to 10.4.9 (while waiting to see if Apple releases a 10.4.11). Kappy describes how to downgrade the OS in this post. Ypu'll want this link as well: OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC)

  • ITunes will no longer write to my CD/DVD writer

I put in a blank CD-R and iTunes tries to read it, then ejects it and say insert a blank CD.
Diagnostics report says it's a chip issue?? Only iTunes is having an issue. If I put in a CD-R that is already written to, then iTunes can read it fine and copy in the files from the CD.

    Drive is empty.
The last failed audio CD burn had error code -128(0xffffff80). It happened on drive E: HP DVD Writer 740b on -128(0xffffff80) media at speed 0X.

I have been through many threads on here about the superdrives not burning any DVD's.  It doesn't seem to be a matter of brand.  Whenever I use Toast or Disk Utility to burn files/images, etc, the drive always fails with an error.  Many posts have said the drives are bad, but that doesn't seem to be the case.  I think there is some problem with Mountain Lion because until I upgraded, I didn't have any issues.
    Reasoning:
    1) I had no issues with snow leopard or previous issues
    2) I have a windows VM under parallels which burns DVDs perfect and rather speedily, no errors whatsoever and I have burned over 20 DVDs with no problems, so it's not the hardware.
Not that I want to always have to fire up my windows VM to burn DVDs, but that seems to be the answer for now until Apple addresses the issue with burning software under Mountain Lion

  • DVD writer trashes out at 3/4 - 7/8 done - L505D-S6947

    L505D-S6947
Win Vista 32 bit w/ service pack 2 and all updates installed
Has 6GB as 4GB Crucial and 2GB Samsung, so I am wondering can memory >4GB and a 32 bit OS be somehow causing this?
The DVD writer is making coasters.  It will burn about 3/4 of the way to the dege of the disk, then quits with an error message, and a question about is the disk is scratched or dirty.   This has happened repeatedly.  I ma using Memorex DVD-R  16x  and have tried burn speeds lower than 8x and still the ame thing.
The DVD drive has been used very little, so I'm sure it's not dead from over use, haha.  Does it need cleaned?
This is the first time I've used Memorex. I had a stockpile of old DVD disks like Maxell and then all worked fine.  I want to back up my data and also make ne new set of Restore disks before I wipe and restore this computer.
Has anyone seen this problem before?    The disk is formatted, some of the file folders are readable on another machine and the Toshiba L505D.  Other files appear to be corrupted.  So, I am getting partially successful burns, and succesful formats.
eta:  I found and tried http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

I "recovered" this computer to factory install, updated all Win Vista OS and Toshiba files.    Tried burning Sony CD-R disks, and made the 4-DVD recovery set without a hitch.    The problem was any or all of:
--  bad or inconsistent quality media
--  corrupted OS (what I really think it was)
--  dirty laser  (not very likely)
L505D-S6947 runs much smoother after the complete "housecleaning,"  haha.

  • New DVD writer on Satellite M40-193 uses 100% CPU

    Hello anyone,
recently I have replaced my DVD-writer with a new one. My laptop is a Satellite M40-193 (PSM40E-06M026IT) and the original drive is a Mat****a UJ-831B. I have replaced it with a Sony-Nec Optiarc AD-7633A because I like the slot-in feature and the Labelflash feature.
Unfortunately it makes me a problem. It will use 100% CPU every time I use it. I cannot figure out the problem. Is there anyone who can help me? It is a software problem or hardware?
    Thank you.

After six days this is the only help I can get on this forum: "...this optical disc drive is compatible with your notebook model?".
The ATA communication bus is a standard.
The exsistence of a compatibility list does not means that ONLY those drives present in the list can work with the relative notebook.
Those drives are the ones tested and the ones that Toshiba says: "this drive surelly work" but not says "this is the only drive that work".
In fact I have RESOLVED the question with a little software I have found on another forum and now my drive works perfectly and I have a newer and more featured drive than those in the list.
    Thank you Mike

  • Can't find DVD writer

I have a Plextor PX-716AL DVD writer which Encore 2.0 can't recognize - this is kind of odd since it was OK with 1.5. Any suggestions other than dumping 2.0 and going back to 1.5?

Last year I put Encore 1.5 on my 64-bit computer and it interfered with Windows seeing my DVD drives. I deleted the lower filters line in the registry, and kept Nero off my computer, and it worked fine. I just got the upgrade to Encore 2.0, and after installation, the same thing happened. Now I removed the upper filters line, like it says in the help instructions I saved from last year, but this time when I re-install, the drives are gone again. Now what? (I'm not that knowledgeable, just following a cookbook fix I got off the forum a year ago.)

  • Can I upload dvd to mac from portable dvd writer?

    I have a MacBook Pro running 10.9.4.
I have a DVD of an old high school football game that I want to make copies of.  No drive in the MacBook Pro of course.  I have an LG slim portable DVD writer. Can I use this to upload the DVD to my Mac and then burn copies?
I have found instruction for burning DVD's using Disk Utility, but how do I get the original game film onto my computer to burn?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

  • HP DVD Writer 740b not recognizing DVDs

My 740b will not recognize DVDs. I have no problems with CDs but any DVD I put in the tray isn't recognized. I initially thought the problem was with the DVD+R I was using but I also have a Slimline s3132w with a DVD writer installed and it burned and read the same discs with no problems. I tried several commercal DVDs (movies) and when I try to play them I get a no disc in drive error. I also have a Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S DVD ROM on the same system and have no problems what so ever playing the same discs. I have tried replacing the ATA data cables post attempting the trouble shooting tips given on the support web page. I have upgraded the firmware hoping this might alleviate the problem with no success. As I stated before this problem is only with DVDs, the drive has no problems what so ever with CDs. I have a feeling the problem my be with my updating to Windows XP SP3. I had done so before but removed it because my Linksys Wireless Adapter(PCI) wouldn't function with it installed. That problem has been repaired and now this. The system the drive is installed in is as follows:
     HP a1203w
                      cpu: Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.2ghz
video: ATI 9550 w/256mb video memory
audio: Sound Blaster Audigy Z2S Platinum
             boot drive: Seagate ST340014A 40GB
    secondary drive: Seagate ST3250620A 250GB

OK chalk me up too to the list of users whose HP DVD Writer 740b cannot "see" blank DVD's and CD's.
Full marks to HP in that I am still smoothly running a Pavilion Media Centre PC EG211AA-ABG m7288a. I find the older plug compatablity useful and have beefed up RAM making it still a powerful "retro" media machine after all these years.....
However after a power failure caused a disk error that trashed my Windows XP and while it restored (as in full reset) like a trooper I took the opportunity to do a clean upgrade to Windows 7 (64bit) seeing as XP is no longer supported. And yes my HP DVD Writer 740b cannot detect blank DVD's and CD's although it can read those with content. It seems to be acting more like a CD ROM drive than a Read Write drive.
I have tried ALL the suggested fixes to no avail and yes my "shell detection" service is operational and on automatic.
But here's the rub as it were. My HP Support Assistant assures me that I have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and running ED24 firmware. So I was hopeful when I found that there was an HP upgrade from the ED24 firmware (sp26595.exe - DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 740b Drive Firmware Update ). HOWEVER even if I run it in XP compatable mode it returns the message that I do NOT have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and therefore no upgrade is required.
The label on the front of the drive is "LightScribe DVD +/- Writer / CD-Writer".
Is the HP Assistant wrong in identifying it as an HP DVD Writer 740b? Also could the drive be getting confused thinking a blank disc is a lightscribe disc in upsidedown ready for printing? I have to try and find a way to reload the LabelPrint software (have the LSS) that was lost when I upgraded to Windows 7. Probably can't retrieve it from the old XP recovery disk.
Any NEW thoughts (especially as to why firmware upgrade does not see the drive) most wrlcome as apart from this one little thing the Pavilion is performing like a trooper and is an excellent advertisement for the durability of HP products (which is why we brought 3 HP laptops as well.
    Hopeful thanks in advance.

  • External USB 2.0 DVD writer - sleep mode issue

I have an Adaptec USB PCI card and hook up with an external USB DVD writer. When I try to standby (sleep mode) it, only screen blanks out, PowerMac G4 does not go to sleep, and no way to wake up or access to it. Only way is a hard shutdown.
The question is, do I need to disconnect this DVD writer first and do I need eject this USB 2.0 device first?
    Thanks

    Hi
Most Mac compatible USB 2.0 PCI cards seem to have problems supporting sleep. Typically either the computer won't sleep, or it will sleep but hang on wakeup, or it will sleep and wake up but the device will no longer be recognised until a restart. One solution seems to be to switch off any connected USB devices before sleeping the computer.
