DVDs Are Not Recognized

I updated my PowerMac (2.0GHz G5, 3GB RAM, LaCie dual-layer DVD burner) to 10.5.6. I tried burning a DVD (copied from a VHS tape and converted to a VIDEO_TS folder, and burned via Toast), and everything was fine, but it crashed halfway through burning the DVD. That's happened before (ever since switchig to Leopard), but not recently. So, I put in another DVD+R and the same thing happened. So, I restarted the machine, and now it won't even recognize that there's a disk in the drive.
So, I powered down and restarted the machine and the same thing happens. I also tried DVD+R DL, and they're not recognized, either. I haven't tried putting in a DVD movie yet, though.
Any ideas?
TIA

Thanks for the replies.
I tried to mount blank DVD-R and DVD+R discs with sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/CD.
I keep getting the answer: mount: no medium found on /dev/sr0.
On some discs it returns with:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so.
but I have not been able to find a pattern for when it will do this.
I ran smartctl -T permissive -i /dev/sr0 with a disc in the drive and got this response:

My first thought is that the two thinkwiki pages that I posted have links to firmware updates far past 1.00. However, I still can't tell which drive I have.

  • Hard drive and dvd are not recognized in the setup menu, what could be wrong?

The hard drive and dvd drive are not recognized on the setup menu for my Pavilion a4316f desktop computer.  Could it be a failure of the controller?  Can a PCI controller be used to replace the mother board controller?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The Recovery process would erase you hard drive, and attempt to install a fresh OS. Decidely a bad choice if you wanted to save your data files. The Recovery sets are "tattoo" with the BIOS hardwafre configuration. It will not, IMHO, recognize the PCI Sata card.
You mentioned the Recovery program on the hard drive actually requested the installer of the controller (PCI card). Try running from that.

  • Dvd are not recognized

    Hi there
in many communities iMac users report the same problem I have, but no clear solution found so far.
    My specs:
    - iMac 27" (from mid 2010)
    - 3.2 Ghz Intel Core i3
    OS:  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
    DVD-ROM OPTIARC
    DVD RW AD-5680H, Revision: 3AHB
    Issue:
    - Many original DVD's are not recognized anymore...since a few weeks, before almolst no DVD was rejected.
-> It seems the more DVD's I try, the less my iMac can read....
No configuration changes, I've only made the regular oficial updates coming from Apple.
Any solution ideas, but cleaning the lenses? Much apreciated!

Have you tried a lens cleaning disk. One that uses dry brushes and no liquids?  Have you looked into the OS X Mavericks: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test?

  • Home movies on dvd are not recognized by I movie

Why is my home made dvd not recognized by imovie?  I tried handbrake and even that didn't recognize the source

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion and Mavericks even though they have it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Movie files are not recognized

MacBook is from late 2007 OS X 10.5.8. Last December, I had to change harddrive and after the new harddrive, movies (from DVD´s or attachment with .mvw format) are not recognized. Quick Time Player and DVD Player are installed.
YouTube, streaming movies, news clips etc are OK
    Any hints?

    cceder,
QuickTime cannot handle all kinds of video unless you install extra tools, such as Perian:
    http://perian.org/
Alternatively, you can try VLC media player, which supports most video and audio formats.

  • Previously burned DVD's not recognized

Since I upgraded to SL- I've started having problems with my Optical drive (I think).
Previously created older movies burned on DVD-Rs (G5 PPC) when inserted in my iMAC are not recognized as DVDs.
Instead I get a message that I've inserted a blank CD (not DVD) in the machine.
These movies used to play just fine on my iMAc and still do on stand-alone players.
My Mac further indicates that these are blank CDs -and can be re-burned (which should be impossible).
Also, if I insert an older DVD with a PAPER label, the optical drive spins down and stops dead.
    Non-paper label disks spin normally.
Am I looking at a failing optical player-- failed software, or both?
    any help appreciated.

"My Mac further indicates that these are blank CDs -and can be re-burned"
    You cannot "reburn" DVD -Rs.
"Also, if I insert an older DVD with a PAPER label"
As a precaution, never insert a DVD or CD that has a paper label. The drive heat can sometimes melt the glue leaving little pieces of paper inside the slot drive during ejections, burning, etc. Reason why I hate slot drives. Wish Apple bring back the tray drives.
If I were you, I would clean my drive "several" times w/a drive cleaner, repair permissions and restart the computer after each burning session.
If little pieces of paper are stuck inside the drive, you will have no alternative but to take your computer to a repair shop for removal & cleaning.

  • Empty CD-Rs are not recognized

    Hello,
I cannot burn empty CD-Rs, because they are not recognized. When I put an empty CD-R into my LG burner K3B tells me that no medium is inserted. CD-RWs and DVDs are working.
Any ideas? What additional information should I post?
    Thanks

  • DVD-Rs not recognized

My Memorex DVD-Rs are not recognized as being recordable... in otherwords in the disk Utility, it says that there is a 0 capacity.
All options in the Disk Utility are disabled.
There is an insert in the spool about firmware upgrades...
Do I really need this upgrade? Or is there something else I can do?
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Magicpixie,
    Welcome to apple forum,
Is that only memorex or other brand also having similar problem?
Have you managed to burn with any other media or with that memorex before?
Actually that is normal, and you cannot make asumption it won't record by looking into disk utility, because the media is still blank and unformatted.
    Try this:
Go to system preference > cd & DVDs > when you insert blank DVD > open finder > as soon as the disk icon appears:
Try to drag any files you want to burn and after that drag the dvd to the trash (it will changed into burning icon and it will burn).
    Good Luck.

Songs in music library downloaded from a CD and synced to my old IPOD are not recognized by my new IPOD classic.  What is the fix?

If you are using automatic syncing with your old iPod, select that iPod in iTunes and go to its Music tab (next to Summary).  Note how this Music tab is set up.  Maybe you can do a screen shot.
Now, select the new iPod in iTunes.  Go to its Music tab, like you did for the old iPod.  Set up the new iPod's Music tab exactly like the old iPod, and Apply the change.
The music on your new iPod should now match the old iPod.
