DVDs aren't recognized by MBP

This is a new problem -- everything was working fine a few days ago. When I put a DVD into my computer (normal, store-bought DVD, works perfectly on friend's MBP), the disc does not show up on my desktop, nor does it show up in my Finder. After a few seconds, DVD Player opens, but there is a blank black screen; when i try to press play, menu, or any other button on the DVD player, it says "Supported Disc Not Available." When I run Disk Utility, I can see the disk in the menu on the left, but all the buttons are grayed out.
Anybody know what's going on here and how I can fix it? Thanks!

I have a similar issue. Not sure about DVDs (not tried yet) but sometimes CDs are not recognised and are not on the desktop. This means of course I cannot eject! After reboot they are always there and usable. This is a new MPB 10.5.4.

  • Same problem with different drives: DVDs aren't recognized

I hope everybody's having a good evening. Here's my deal:
Shortly after buying my PowerMac G4 (MDD) in 2003, I put a Pioneer DVR-A06 Superdrive into it, and it was great. Eventually, though, the 4x DVD burning and lack of DVD+R or dual-layer burning proved insufficient for my needs, so I replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-112D almost a year ago. Everything continued to be fine until a couple of months ago, when suddenly, the drive refused to recognize discs. Any disc, be it blank or full, CD or DVD, would spin for several seconds before being spit back out. I ran a cleaning disc through the drive, which didn't help. I decided the drive had gone bad, so I replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-116D. Once again, everything seemed fine for a few weeks.
But everything is no longer fine, as of a couple of days ago. The Pioneer Superdrives I've used have always been finicky about discs; sometimes, discs rejected by the Pioneer drives would work perfectly in the PowerMac's original Combo drive (which I moved to the lower bay and set to slave, but have otherwise not monkeyed with), set-top DVD players, and my iBook's optical drive. But now neither the original Combo drive nor the brand-new Pioneer burner will recognize DVDs, and the Combo drive won't recognize CDs either.
This is a very sudden development: once the Pioneer drive stopped accepting DVDs (even blank ones! I can't burn anything either), the Combo drive stopped accepting any discs at all. I've run a cleaning disc through both drives (the Combo drive actually rejected it), and even opened them up to inspect the lenses for dust or scratches (they're pristine). The Combo drive is now five years old, so I'm not surprised that it's failing, but I'm now on my third Pioneer drive in just under a year, so I think something else is going on here.
Is it just that Pioneer makes really picky drives, and that the Combo drive just happened to coincidentally fail at the same time as the brand-new Pioneer? Is there some sort of hardware issue I'm not considering? Or is this a software problem of some sort? I've noticed some performance changes since installing Leopard (not unexpected, since it's an old, non-Intel machine); could it be OS-related?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and effort!

Hi, and thanks for your response! I'll try reinstalling Leopard.
My PowerMac is still very fast with Leopard, though the processors are having a noticeably harder time keeping up. Things get hung up more frequently than with Tiger, but not enough to really be a problem (I could certainly use more processing power for video encoding, but then again, who couldn't?). I also upgraded my MDD's video card, so I imagine the performance drop is all the more noticeable in machines that still use the original hardware. Regardless, my MDD handles Leopard much better than my G4 iBook, which went from flying with Tiger to crawling with Leopard.

  • Some DVDs aren't recognized in the drive

I have a Mac Pro tower, as well as a MacBook Pro.
Sometimes when I try to use a DVD (custom-made, not a manufactured item) in the Mac Pro, I get a message that the computer does cannot read the disk. This does not happen with all "home made" DVDs - I recently got 5 DVDs with QuickTime files on them, 3 were rejected, but 2 worked fine.
Yet, I take the same rejected DVD and put it into my MacBook Pro, and it works fine.
    Any thoughts on this?

Maybe it's the media itself rather than anything you're doing of your hardware. Try using good quality branded media and see if things improve.

  • DVD Recordable Disc Aren't Recognized - HELP

    Hello,
HELP! As the title suggests DVD Recordable Disc aren't recognized by my PowerBook.
    Music CDs - Work
    DVDs (R2 and R1) - Work
    CD-R - Work
    CD-RW - Work
    But.. DVD+(or)-R won't work.
The disc spins in the drive as if reading, then spins again. But nothing appears in the desktop. It doesn't ejects, it just stops spinning in the drive.
I've backed up TV downloaded from iTunes, but accidentally done something to the file which caused it play without sound.
    HELP!

    Hi,
Yeah, sorry it does it have a superdrive, i should have mentioned that in the first post.
Blank DVDs are recognised. I just don't understand why these one won't.
I know they were working fine before the new year, as i wiped my computer, and then added all the back-up.
    Thanks for any help.

  • External DVD Drive Not Recognized

Just got a Toshiba portable supermulti DVD/CD drive. My internal drive is fried and figured it would be cheaper to get an external until I can get a new computer. Except, when I plug it into either of my USB ports, the drive lights up and makes noise for about 10 secs, then stops and it does not register on my computer. The drive shows up on the System Profiler, but nowhere else is it recognized. When I try to open Disk Utility, it just says 'Gathering Disk Info' and just pinwheels and is Not Responding until I Force Quit. Any thoughts as to what the issue is? My computer recognizes my external hard drive, iPod and anything else I plug into it and the DVD drive was recognized no-problem by my Dad's new Macook Pro and by my brother's PC. I should say I have the 2007 model Pro. Thanks!

Is the DVD drive externally powered? I.e. does it have a power supply?
For exmple my LG external DVD won't work with a single USB on my Macbook Pro - it requires another usb cable that has a power plug on the end. So both USB ports are used.
It kinda works without power, but it's unreliable, it could be you're having a similar issue?

  • My dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark.

my dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark. Tried uninstallingdevice drive and scanning for new hardware. scanned for updates, etc. I getting no results. The laptop is a Pavilion DV5. Thanks

    Hi,
It could be that the drive has a Hardware issue, but try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, open Device Manager, right click the DVD drive and select Uninstall.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let Windows rediscover the device and check.

It is possible one of the 10.6.8 updates may help:

  • HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

after i made The Boot Camp Setup  for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • USB drives aren't recognized in Windows after Yosemite update.

On my Windows partition, my flash drives aren't recognized anymore. I've tried installing the Windows Support Software. That doesn't seem to do it.

    1. Your hardware seems to be functional since OSX can see USBs.
    2. Do you have iTunes installed on the Windows side?
    3. Can you remove all Apple software and just install the Bootcamp drivers, nothing else and test?
    4. This is what I see on my Yosemite DP6 (not GA version) and have a USB2 plugged in which is detected.

  • Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized

I have a Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized problem.  I installed a new Pioneer dvd burner.  It is Sata.  It works fine, but every time I boot into Win xppro  sp3 I get the found new hardware, it lists the correct drive and has the error that it cannot be installed.  Just have to cancel that message, but yesterday I went to install a new copy of windows on another drive connected to the the pc, the windows cd booted up asked the usual questions and then started setup and message came up and said it could not continue, because there was no cd drive.  Once I quit laughing and pointing to the cd drive,   I figured I better find out if it came be fixed.  I also have a sata hard drive connected internally to the pc.  This works fine also.  If I boot to the sata drive the sata dvd burner is recognized and it is installed. Works fine.  Does anyone want to tackle this one?  I tried showing the windows cd where the  burner was and expained to it that it was inside the drive already, but it just won't listen.  The pc worked fine with the old ide drive.  Thanks in advance.

  • Acpi events aren't recognized at startup

    Hi forum!
Since 3 weeks my acpi events aren't recognized anymore after startup, no apci_listen and no event-handler-output. I've got to manually type "systemctl restart acpid" to get them working again. What could be the problem? Journallog: http://pastebin.com/5f03T2wh

We might have the same issue, though restarting acpid doesn't change anything for me. I've tried different kernels and tried to find out if any package was updated when it started happening, but couldn't find anything. I've opened a bug report for the kernel here:
    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71221
That bug has the following effects on my computer:
    - Backlight keys not working
    - Wireless key not working
    - Doesn't detect the change when plugging out the battery cord, KDE/upower can't see that the computer is on battery
    - CPU frequency isn't lowered automatically anymore when my PC gets too hot, and it just shuts down due to overheating

My eyes just glazed over...Please in the future break down each of your issues with paragraphs separated by two carriage returns. It would be much easier when trying to address your issues.
Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse -> Mouse
And edit your mouse settings to do what you want it to do.
Secondly, this is not the place to vent. If you have a complaint, there is:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    or http://www.apple.com/contact/
We are just end users here helping other end users.
Third, from my understanding, it would appear you are concerned about the noise the hard drive makes when it falls asleep? Why not put your machine in screen saver mode instead? Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver turn off all Energy Saver settings, or set them to run Never.
Fourth, if your machine was purchased just a few days ago, you may still be able to get an exchange from the store, quicker than you can get a repair done. You may want to look into that possibility.
Fifth, it does appear you found the Logic forum. I would persist in asking there how to solve your technical issue with Logic regarding the audio. It may be you don't have to do anything special to the hard drive. Remember audio can be transmitted by wire, avoiding ambient sounds.
    Good luck!

  • My daughters iPod touch won't sync, says apps aren't recognized, nothing syncs though

iPod touch won't sync at all. Only message is that some apps aren't recognized.  If I reset, will it sync? Or will she have a blank iPod because the "apps aren't recognized"?

Use the communities search box in the upper right of this page and searc for: "the apps can't be determined". Use the quote makes and make sure the wording matches what the error message says.
You will then find the previous discussions with the same error.  I do not remember the solution.
