DVDs failing to burn

Hello all,
I want to say first that I'm not an inexperienced mac OS X user. Been using it for some time and I'm usually good at figuring out problems.  I am a video editor, so burning DVDs and making DVDs is something I do very often.
The issue I'm having is my computer is simply refusing to make any DVDs.  I have absolutely no clue why it is doing this or what caused it.  It is even failing to create a .dmg of the DVD I make.  I have tried Compressor and Burn to create DVDs.  I have never had issues with either in the past.
I am posting this in this section because my suspicion is maybe it is a corrupt DVD burn driver?
Any help on maybe how to fix this would be wonderful.  I have already repaired disk permissions with disk utility, and no luck.

Hello phudgedesign
Welcome to apple discussions. It's only necessary to post the first and last 20 lines of the error report. So for future reference please avoid posting the entire report to this iDvd forum.
My guess after reading the above report is that you may be having issues with at least one (and possibly multiple) external device/s currently connected to your mac. Can you tell us more about any 3rd party external devices you may have connected to this mac? How did you connect them? Were they formatted properly for your computer? We'll also need to know if you are using firewire connections and cables or any USB2 devices and cables (or both).
How much available HDD space is remaining on the boot volume? Are any of iDvd's assets located on external devices (yes /no)? If so, have you tried moving these assets recently? That is have you made them available to iDvd from the boot volume and thereafter properly ejecting and unplugging any 3rd party devices that may be conflicting with the app?

  • DVD - Fails After Burn

    Please help,
I have tried two DVDr's now and the same problem.
I have put together a dvd with slideshows created in idvd, added music from itunes to the 4 chapters, plus the main title screen.
The project info is as follows.
3.8mb of 4.7, so there is enough free space.
However when the burn has done, we pop the finished disk in the DVD, title screen works fine, menu / chapter works fine, but the disk then fails in the same place in each of the slideshows ( About 15 minutes in )
    I have used Sony DVDr's 16x and Maxwell DVDr's 16x.
Any help would be gratefully received as we have family waiting for this disk back in the U.K and U.S.
    Thanks.

To add the music within iPhoto, create a playlist of the songs you wish to use. Then select _that playlist_, not the individual titles, for your slideshow.
To add music within iMovie, follow the directions from Help:
*Adding music from your iTunes library*
You can give your movie a musical soundtrack by importing music from your iTunes library.
    To import music from iTunes:
    1. Click the Timeline Viewer button.
    2. Drag the playhead (B, shown above) to the frame where you want the music track to begin.
Tip: To precisely adjust the playhead position, press the Left or Right Arrow key to move the playhead one frame at a time. To move the playhead in ten-frame increments, hold down the Shift key while pressing the arrow key.
    3. Click the Media button, and then click Audio.
    4. Choose your iTunes library or a playlist at the top of the Audio pane.
    5. Select a song from the list.
Tip: You can also search for a song by typing text in the search field. As you type, songs that contain the text you entered appear in the Audio pane. To see all songs again, click the Reset button (an "x" in the search field).
    6. If you want, click the Play button to the left of the search field to listen to the song you selected.
    7. Click "Place at Playhead."
The song appears as an audio clip in the timeline viewer.
If you want to lock the track to a particular part of the video, choose Advanced > "Lock Audio Clip at Playhead." When you move a video clip with locked audio, the audio clip moves with the video.
You can also adjust the volume of an audio clip, change its length, and more. For more information, see Related Topics below.

  • Burning DVDs fail at about 1min left using Matshita UJ-825

    Hey everyone,
I tried to find a solution for this problem in the other threads, but none helped me at all. So here's my problem:
I have an iMac G5 running Mac OS 10.4.7 with SuperDrive:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825:
    Firmware Revision: DBN7
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
I used to burn DVDs normally after I bought it 1,5 year ago. But in the past 4 months, I can't burn them no longer. I've tried 5 different brands and had the same problem. Either if I am using iTunes or Finder or Toast 7, my iMac always spit the DVD when it's about to finish burning the disc, at 5 to 1min left.
In iTunes I get a message saying that the disc failed to burn and if I try to insert the disc after, it will never mount on the desktop.
When using Toast, I get a message saying it's a MEDIUM ERROR and then it spits the DVD.
The last DVD brand I bought was HP, and I sucessfully burned around 10 DVDs after it started to happen again, just like the other brands I was using. No matter what speed I use, I always get the same error messages at about 5min to finish burning the DVDs. CDs will burn fine, and it reads all other DVDs (including the ones I sucessfully burned in the past).
    What can be happening?
    Thanks
    Tadeu

Yes, I repaired the permissions today. But how do I clean the drive?
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro burn DVD failed even after installing Leopard 10.5.2

Ever since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard my 17in MacBook Pro has failed to burn DVDs.
It managed to burn a couple discs after the upgrade, but soon proceeded to give various error messages whenever I have attempted to burn a DVD. The most common error is:
+Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error code 0x80020022)+
This is when using "Burn folders" to write large folders/files onto DVD (+3gig). It always fails about halfway through the disc, so if I write smaller folders it will often complete successfully. CD-Rs generally burn fine too.
I have tried various media and burning apps to no avail.
*I was hoping Leopard Update 10.5.2 would fix this issue, but alas it has not!*
Before I installed the update I had also unsuccessfully tried various solutions offered in this forum, such as resetting the PRAM and creating a new user account.
I would greatly appreciate anyone's insights, solutions or plan of action to resolve this issue. This is my first Mac (a rather expensive investment here in South Africa) and it has been awesome using it up until this point!

  • DVD DL fail to burn AND Firewire 400/800 problems

I have had several months of intermittent DVD burn fails. Most recently today burning from the finder and it is now reporting "The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."
That error is new, previously it was always
    Sense Key - Hardware Error
    Sense Code - 0x03
The first time this cropped up was on 10.5.x and when I reported it to apple they had me take it to get the drive replaced since it was still covered by applecare.
After the DVD replacement and while still in the shop it burned a few DVD DLs ok. A few weeks later the same 0x03 errors. (it always burns CDs just fine)
After another phone conversation with applecare, they now suggest that the logic board needs to be replaced. (This was after I mentioned I frequently have problems with Firewire 400 or 800 external drives showing up...sometimes they work sometimes they don't. The same drives always show up when connected via USB)
I was walked through resetting the PRAM, which cleared up the Firewire 400/800 temporarily, but it did not help the DVD burn problem.
So on the eve before the appointment, this crazy MBP (2,2, 2.33 ghz) burns a DVD DL after blowing compressed air thru the DVD slot. But the second DVD DL fails to burn with the ""The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."
I was hoping that the upgrade to 10.6.x would solve both issues, but not so much.
Anyone else with the DVD DL problem experiencing FW problems?

The problems with some external FW burners under SL are fairly common, Robert. With some earlier drives (like my Pioneer 109 in an external box) often one can't even "see" the drive at all (though the bridge in the external box will show up under System Profiler) through FW, though it works fine under USB. With some later ones things like PRAM resets, or simply disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, will get them working. See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10070281 or some discussion of these issues and possible "workarounds".
As far as the general disc burning issue goes, other things that are worth considering include problems with a "fullish" hard drive with fragmented free space, and the actual media being used. What brands of DVD have you tried?
DL discs, generally seem much more finicky about dust and dirt than single layer when it comes to burning (and , of course, need much more free HD space) . Will it burn a single layer DVD or a CD without problems?
    Cheers

  • Macbook Pro disc drive failing to burn DVD-R.

I am using a 2007, 17" Macbook Pro with 10.6.8. My drive information in System Profiler reads as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J:
      Firmware Revision:          FBZ8
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
I am trying to burn an .mp4 video to a DVD in order to test the disc for playback. When I insert the disc, it appears first in the Finder as a blank DVD. I click and drag the video to the DVD and hit "Burn." What follows is an error message:
"'Untitled DVD'" can't be burned because the disck is read-only and can't be modified (error code 0x80020042)."
After that, the disc ejects, and I am back at square one.
I have looked online for similar cases and suggested solutions, but nothing has worked yet. I have verified and repaired my disk permissions via Disk Utility, tried to burn multiple times with different, fresh DVD-Rs, purchased brand new DVD-Rs, and even tried changing the permissions manually via the "Info" panel.
I do not have iDVD or any other third party DVD burning software. In the past, I used iDVD and these very same DVD-Rs to burn a number of student films for playback. At that time, the process was very simple and worked as one might expect it to.
I am wondering if I should just get iDVD or another third party software, but I am reluctant to, because I would think that the OS' built-in burning capability ought to work just as well. Of course, I could easily be mistaken.
    Please help. Thank you.

    Some clarification:
I am not trying to burn a data disc. If that is what I just described, I was unaware that I was attempting to burn a data disc. I am trying to burn a video DVD for playback on a DVD player. If you or anyone here are trying to tell me that I cannot burn a video DVD by performing the process I described, then I will continue to attempt to use the third party software I downloaded instead.
    Further clarification:
The problem does not appear to be with the discs. I began testing this issue using Memorex DVD-Rs that I already own. Until today, I had barely touched the stack. However, because it was technically possible that I was using several coasters that I had forgotten about, I went out and bought some additional DVD-Rs - the Verbatims. It is highly unlikely that both the Memorex stack I already owned and the Verbatim discs I just purchased are both duds. I know for a fact that the Memorex discs should work because I have several archived DVD videos on the very same discs.
The real problem appears to be with the drive and how it is reading the discs. For some reason, it is recognizing them as "read-only" and/or not blank, as System Profiler has shown:
      Media:
      Type:          DVD-R
      ID:          CMC MAG. AM3
      Blank:          No
      Erasable:          No
      Overwritable:          No
      Appendable:          Yes
      Write Speeds:          2x, 4x, 8x
I have attempted to Repair Disk Permissions twice - that has not solved the issue. I am going to attempt an SMC reset next, and if that fails, I will attempt to Repair Disk via the install DVD. Failing all of those options, I guess I'm going to have to visit a Genius Bar.
Thank you all again. Please try to stay with me as I continue handling this issue, as I will provide updates.

  • Can no longer Play DVD's or Burn Disks in on Macmini

    Hi,
I have recently rebuilt my MacMini with a new WD500 Gb hard drive with Snow Leopard and that went fine.
One issue that maybe related is that I can no longer play DVD's or burn items to DVD. I have had a look in system profiler and can see the Pioneer drive in the ATA Device Tree.
When I insert a DVD, I hear the drive trying to run it but after a while it just spits the DVD out. If I insert a blank DVD, it recognises the DVD and I can select it to burn but when it starts the burning process it fails and again spits the disc out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

http://www.macsales.com/ has numerous good optical drives. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ may list others.
Note for 2 USB port Mac Minis (as opposed to 4 or 5 on the rear), be sure to get a Firewire optical drive, as Mac OS X won't boot USB on PowerPC Macs except in rare USB model drives that are hard to find.

  • DVD WILL NOT BURN IN IDVD

Trying to burn a project in IDVD, goes through the entire process up to "Writing Lead-In" and about 6 minutes left, the disk is ejected automatically. When put back in process gets hung up. Have also saved as a "Disk Image on my desktop and plays with no issues via the DVD software. When I select to burn to Disc, within 1 minute disk is ejected and this message comes up "The Disk can"t burn, because the device failed to calibrate the Laser Power for this Media". Is this a software or hardware issue? Or something else

    Hi
    • Trashing pref file - first thing to do (free and easy)
    • Cheap media is often a problem - I use Verbatim DVD-R and burn at x4 speed
    • Free space - is important BUT only on start-up hard disk (others doesn't matter)
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    iDVD pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.

While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)

iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

    Apple Codec updated ?

  • The burn to the superdrive drive failed. the burn failed because of a medium write error.

Hello, I have an IMAC (OS X version 10.8.3)
And when I put a blank disc (dvd+R 8.5gb DL), it's not even shown in Finder!
So, well, when I try to burn any files on it, it says:
"the burn to the SuperDrive drive failed. the burn failed because of a medium write error."
Please, help to solve my problem. I'm Russian & and it's really hard to find any help on Russian apple forums.

DVD fails to mount on internal DVD player (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D shipped with G5). After several seconds, tray opens. Problem is that unless the DVD mounts, it cannot be duplicated. Hey there Tramble... You seem to of had close to what my problem is. Just wanted to get your thoughts on it. CD works just fine, reads and burns no problem. DVD will not read or burn and no mount. Was your CD working? Wonder if there is a reason why one will work and the other wont... Either way the price of a laser cleaner may be worth the try.
