DVDs I've burned on my G5 won't mount on my computer

I'm archiving a lot of digital photography images on DVDs. They burn and verify fine (Memorex 8x) and then when I put them back in the slot later, they will not mount. I've rebooted, restarted, unplugged and then rebooted - a couple of times the DVD showed up and then when I take it out and put in another it won't mount. I can see commercial DVD movies as well as a DVD (Sony 16x) a friend made of data files that does mount. I've just noticed this problem, although it may have been going on for a while.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Use a piece of cardboard cut in a circle. OK it won't work but it is free and no less reliable than Memorex. Try a Verbatim DVD +R. I burn hundreds of them, so many I burned out the DVD drive. They are great media.
If they don't work, spend the $40 - $50 and get a new drive, Pioneer 111 or 112 and replace the old one. It is 15 minutes with no tools required and instructions are in your manual.

  • DVD-R's burned on my pc won't play on my Macbook Air

Ok, i'm new to mac, here we go. I bought a Macbook Air 2011. its running lion. I have a liteon external dvd burner eTAU208. The burner is recongized, it will burn a new disk. any DVD disk, data or movie will not be playable on my mac. the dvd icon will not appear on the desktop. i have an older burner, i mean older too. i works fine, reads and writes, with it the icon appears on the desktop. my research showed that the liteon burner was mac compatable. are dvds burned on a pc not readable on a mac? If so is there a work around. I have a lot of data i've burned to disk. I have to be able to access it. If anybody has any ideas it would be appreciated. thanx

When you burned the disk, did you also "finalize" the disk, using the software that was used to copy the files? If not, then the disk will be only readable by on OS running the driver for that software. Once finalized, it can be read by near any computer.
Also make sure that Finder's preferences are set to display DVD's on the desktop.
p.s. when burning DVD's on your Mac, they will be finalized by default.

  • Hard Drive won't mount on certain computer

DISCLAIMER: Looked on archive threads but couldn't find anything that would specifically help me with this situation, that or I'm stupid and missed a bunch of things. If I missed an important thread, I'd love a link to help me, thanks. Also, if I'm like a lost child in the wrong department, please give me a nudge to the right place (I figured this might have a lot to do with access privilidges, see below).
Anyhoo, I have a "mobile" d2 LaCie drive that travels between various recording studios, computers and OS's, although most of them have 10.4.6 I believe. It pops up EVERYWHERE I go (all G5's) except on a G4 that I have (with the mirror doors? Don't know the proper name...). I'll plug it in with the 400 cable, doesn't pop up on the desktop/finder, in the sys profiler, in disk utility, or anywhere else I can see. I'll go through this humorous song and dance of turning on&off the drive, plugging/unplugging power/firewire cable, restarting computer, resetting the pram, "cold" booting, everything I can think of. Finally after about 10 (yes, I'm serious) instances of restarting the computer (along with various rituals of plugging/unplugging chords) it comes up as if nothing is wrong!
    What's my problem!!
My OS on this computer is 10.4.7, I do use ipods and video cameras that pop up on it regularly without problems. I am listed as an "admin" on ALL COMPUTERS WHERE I USE THIS DRIVE.
Thanks so much for anyone who could give me a slap in the face on this one. I'm not TOO technically minded just to give you a heads up.

    Studioduck,
No worries. There is nothing worth laughing at here -
you genuinely are asking good questions and want to
    learn more.
    Please have a read here...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/
    en/mh669.html
Then let us know if the "ignore ther the permissions
were set on another mac where the user permissions"
checkbox is enabled on that disk.
If you want the permissions to match on more than one
mac, you have to make sure the user id numbers match
since that is what gets stored on disk - a number -
not the name of the user. From the command prompt
(terminal application - in the utilities folder)
    <pre>mac:~ myuser$ id
    uid=501(mysuer) gid=501(myuser) groups=501(myuser),
    81(appserveradm), 79(appserverusr), 80(admin)</pre>
    Thanks, Michael.
I remember that after the drive wouldn't mount on the G4 I looked at the info on a G5 and the "ignore permissions" box WAS checked. I unchecked it thinking that "whatever it was must have been wrong", I haven't looked at it since, now it's on the G4 where I can't see it, I'll have to take it somewhere else tomorrow and I can check again.
I assume the command you gave me is for when the drive is mounted? Is it a command to see the drive number or to change it? Thanks again,
    Greg

Ok, I couldnt connect my ipod to my computer via usb 2.0 and all the other usb's i have. And It gets me to the "Found new hardware" screen. I go through the steps and it doesnt install the software.
But when I try it on another computer it doesnt give me the "found new hardware" screen, but the bottom right (taskbar) says it found new drives, gives me 1 by 1 what they are. Then says its installed.

  • Troubleshooting an Imac G5 that won't mount on host computer in target mode.

I believe the internal harddrive on my Imac G5 has failed as the computer is stuck on a gray screen at startup and I am unable to repair the disk using disk utility on the OSX installation cd. I have the machine connected to another working mac with a firewire cable and am attempting to access the harddrive through target mode. The non-working mac starts in target mode but does not mount on the host computer. How can this be troubleshooted?

Make sure you start the G5 iMac in Target Disk Mode first, then connect it to the other Mac.  If that doesn't work then, I'm pretty certain the hard disk is dead.
    Sorry.
    Good luck.

  • Need help with Lacie Big Extreme that won't mount

    OK Guys,
My buddy's Lacie 1TB Big Extreme won't mount to any computer we try. The blue light is flashing. We have tried different cables on different computers. After a web search for similar problems we found out several people had success just plugging in a new power supply. So, we ordered one. Didn't work.
I can hear the drive spinning up. Oh, I guess I should mention this unit is out of warranty.
Here's my question. After some research, I found out this drive has 2 hard drives inside and set up as Raid 0. This is the way Lacie sets these up for use right out of the box. So if I take the Lacie enclosure apart and try to mount the drives separately in another generic enclosure what will I see in terms of the files written on a single drive (assuming it mounts) since I am dealing with an initial Raid 0 set-up? My intention is to save the files. Please help.

Same problem with an external LaCie Little Big Disk = does not mount, but shows up under FireWire in System Profiler. I assume it's a OS X issue, because I ran a software "Data Rescue II" and this software has recognized the disk.
Has probably something to do with one of the latest OS X updates, because I've used this disk with Time Machine now more than a year and never had a problem.
I recommend not to experiment with partitioning/reformatting (if you care about the data on the disk) and push Apple for a solution. It assume it's some kind of an access problem.

  • My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down"

My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down" and restart while holding down the mouse button. Anyone have any remedies?

I ran into a similar (identical?) problem.  I inserted a DVD-R and my imac would not recognize it.  The only way to eject was to do a restart.  I tried some of the SMC reset stuff.  That didn't work.  I came across another thread on macrumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336501)
    that solved my problem.
I have an external Western Digital Passport drive that I use for timecapsule.  It turns out
there are two files that WD adds to the /Library/LaunchDaemons that interferes with the
SuperDrive.  I removed the WD files from the LaunchDaemons directory and everything works fine
now.  Again, refer to the macrumors thread for more details.
The files I removed from the LaunchDaemons directory were:
    com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist
    com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist
..yes I had installed the WD backup software to see if I liked it....I did not, but didn't realize this files would cause a conflict with the SuperDrive.

  • TS2180 DVDs won't play in regular DVD players iDVD burns with no errors the DVDs always get out into a folder ???

Dear Apple friends The iDVD burns DVDs with-out any error messages but DVDs dont play in regular DVD players I notice that the DVD burns to a folder and there is no setting to prevent this How do you burn the DVD with-out it getting put into a folder ??? Thanks Mike

That often is a result of using inferior DVD disks and burning at too high a speed.  What brand and type of disk did you use and what speed did you burn at?
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.

Up and running with Snow Leopard now and working on the updates.

  • Can no longer Play DVD's or Burn Disks in on Macmini

    Hi,
I have recently rebuilt my MacMini with a new WD500 Gb hard drive with Snow Leopard and that went fine.
One issue that maybe related is that I can no longer play DVD's or burn items to DVD. I have had a look in system profiler and can see the Pioneer drive in the ATA Device Tree.
When I insert a DVD, I hear the drive trying to run it but after a while it just spits the DVD out. If I insert a blank DVD, it recognises the DVD and I can select it to burn but when it starts the burning process it fails and again spits the disc out.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gavin

http://www.macsales.com/ has numerous good optical drives. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ may list others.
Note for 2 USB port Mac Minis (as opposed to 4 or 5 on the rear), be sure to get a Firewire optical drive, as Mac OS X won't boot USB on PowerPC Macs except in rare USB model drives that are hard to find.

  • Combo or Superdrive?  Is that why my DVD didn't burn?

I've never tried to make a DVD before, but I have a Quicktime movie that went through the whole 4-step process and I thought I burned it, but the DVD I made won't play on the computer or in a DVD player. It stops at the title page and that's it. I realized that maybe I don't have the right kind of DVD drive? I burned it using iDVD 4 onto a DVD-R. Sorry to be so lame!

    Hi skoolcop:
Do you have the latest software updates to whichever version of quicktime you are using?
Look here for a great deal of info regarding iDVD.

  • DVD+R DL won't mount...on 3 different drives!

    Yikes!....Help!...I'm really stuck....
I've read a lot of the posts here regarding DVD's that won't mount and thanks in advance to those who've offered help. Hope you have some suggestions for me. Here's the deal.
About 4 months ago, the disk, a Memorex DVD+R DL, was successfully burned on my G5, using 10.4.11 for burning. And I was able to mount and read it a couple of times. It's a data-only archive disk of old files.
Over the past month, I've acquired a MacPro 2.8G 8-core (10.5.6) and a MacBookPro 2.61G Core Duo (10.4.11). And this disk will not mount on any of these 3 machines...not the MPro, not the MBPro and not the G5 that it was originally burned on! All 3 machines yield the same result...they kick the disk back out with out any messages..."error" or otherwise. There doesn't appear to be any significant scratching or degradation on the disk.
I've searched the net for a "Mac DVD data recovery" program but;(a.) haven't been able to find one....they're all PC and (b.)don't really see how any software app could "deal" with a disk that won't even mount!
I've had a look at the "upgrade the firmware" options, but it would seem strange that the firmware would be the problem on all 3 different drives.
I'm down to contacting a Pro Data Recovery company, but that'll be expensive!
So any and all suggestions will be HUGELY appreciated!
    thanks,
    b myers

The usual problem with Memorex DVD's of any format was they didn't burn period, so well done getting one to burn, AND a DL no less. I would try an external DVD burner from LaCie (or LG which makes a good USB one), or even a Windows box to see if anything can read it. A PC with EZ CD Creator or Nero could image and burn on a decent brand of DL (e.g. Verbatim) or even a USB drive.
Cheaper alternative is a 2nd non identical brand drive in the mac Pro, as they do take two.
Diskwarrior is not an option for something that isn't seen and thus is unable to be mounted by the filesystem.

  • Burned archive CDs won't mount on OS 10.7.5

I have been archiving photos onto CDs for a few years, and most of them are fine. But there are 3 that won't mount (on 2009 iMac or 2007 MacBook both running OS 10.7.5), two from 2003 and one from 2005 (others from 2005 are fine). Does anyone have ideas about how to fix this? I've been googling for solutions without success.
    Many thanks!

Additionally, if you must have them on CD or DVD, the only thing I would suggest is the rather expensive archive media:
    http://www.verbatim.com/subcat/optical-media/dvd/archival-grade-gold-dvd-r/
I have burned some very important data as well as some one-of-a-kind foreign language movies to those DVDs. They as supposed to last 50 years or so.

  • New MBP won't mount some CD/DVDs; why?

When i insert certain CD/DVDs the optical drive clicks and buzzes three times before spitting the disk out again. Even the Leopard install disk that came in the box won't mount.
Strangely every type of blank media that i have tried works without any problems, as well as a select number of DVDs and CDs (the Remote Desktop install DVD and some music CDs work perfectly). I had no problems burning disks either.
Could this strange behavior be caused by minute differences in the size of the hole in the middle of the CD/DVD?
I don't live close to an Apple Store so i would like to try to solve this myself, as i am reasonably technically competent. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice

Got the same problem on y brand new 17". The optical drive doesn't mount most DVDs, including the System Installer DVDs included with the Mac. The disc gets pulled into the slot, but then the drive seems to have difficulties holding on to it. There is a constant rhythmic "seeking" sound (or sometimes a disturbig noise like a broken washing machine) and after about a minute, the disc gets ejected. Strangely, about 10% of the roughly 30 commercial DVDs I've tried are always accepted and being played without a problem. Those that won't mount reliably don't, but play perfectly fine in two other computers. Something's a bit loose here, it seems...
