DVDs not playing since Yosemite upgrade; some background information

Hello there!
Since we have upgraded one of the MacBookPro's to Yosemite, it has stopped playing DVDs. Actually, it does not mount them at all, while it plays CD (original and copies) without a problem.
So when inserting a CD, it gets mounted: you can see it in Finder and also appears in the /volumes folder. When you insert a DVD, the drives spins, but the disk does not get mounted, it does not appear in Finder, nor can any program (DVD player, VLC) find it.
I have done the usual rounds of PRAM and SMC resets, without any improvement. I have also used DiskUtility to check/repair permissions as well, no resolution here either.
When I use an external DVD drive on the Yosemite, it generates the same symptoms as well: CDs mount and play, DVD's don't, so I don't think that the drive itself have given up, it is a software issue.
I have checked in DiskUtility the information, and this has provided some revealing clues:
On the laptops where DVDs play normally, DiskUtility says (select the disk and click the blue 'i' info button on the top of the window) that the DVD has a so-called Universal Disk Format (UDF) file format.
Under Yosemite the same DVD has the Windows NT Filesystem G3 file format, it does not mount or play at all...
I suspect that the faulty file system assignment (the failure to recognize the proper DVD format) prevents the mounting and the playback.
Do other people with DVD playback issues see the same?
Does anybody know how to fix this? Is there a way to change some settings to get the proper DVD format recognized by the system?
Or the only option is to send few thousands of emails to Tim Cook to get this fixed?
Let me know...

Some updates to the technically more adept:
1. All commercial DVDs (at least those in house) give the same filetype issue (not recognizing DVD as a DVD, but as a Windows filesystem) in Yosemite.
2. I have also looked at the console error messages (although it does not tell me much, but maybe somebody can decipher it) upon inserting a DVD:

  • Facetime not connecting since yosemite upgrade

    Hi folks,
    Here's one for you.
2012 13" MBP. Everything was hunky dory until I upgraded OS to Yosemite.
Since then the MBP takes an age to boot up and I've lost FT.
I did the Yosemite upgrade and it broke FT.
Did a clean install of Yosemite and used time machine to put everything back - no change.
Any ideas gratefully received. Facetime is working fine on my family's other Apple prods... My iphone 5s, the wife's iphone 5s, son's ipad2 and ipod touch...Everything connects but my MBP....Help!

    Hi Linc,
    Imessage is working fine.
    No error messages.
I cannot FT out on my MacBook. Whenever I try to dial out I just get a 'Facebook cannot connect' message.
If a FT comes in it rings on my MacBook but wont connect if I try to pick it up. If I pick up FT on my iphone the FT keeps ringing on the MacBook.
I mentioned it to the chap in the Apple store a few weeks back (while I was replacing my phone after going swimming with it in my pocket - but that's a different story)....he reckoned it might have been due to the upgrade to Yosemeti being put on top of the existing OS and done over wifi. Said a clean and full install should solve it.
So...I downloaded the Yosemeti installer, put it onto a USB stick, backed everything up and did a full, clean install from the stick. Reinstalled my profile and other stuff from the backup to find....absolutely no change whatsoever.

  • RDC not connecting since Yosemite upgrade...

Since upgrading to x yosemite, my remote desktop connection is no longer connecting.  VPN connects fine, just can't connect to the server through Microsoft RDC for Mac.  Any suggestions?

Just to update my own situation, I applied the Yosemite patch (10.10.1) but it still hasn't helped with the RDP issue.
Also, although I got it to work a few times, there are still problems with the RDP connection. But I have come up with a workaround which seems to be reliable.
I can't get RDP to connect to the remote windows machine (Win 7 professional) using the machine hostname, only by using the IP address.  The Win machine I connect to changes IP address regularly.  So what I do is, after making the VPN connection, I open a new terminal window (must be one started a few seconds after establishing the VPN connection) and run "nslookup" to find the IP address of the machine I want to connect to.
Then I have to edit the RDP connection details to use the IP address it's given me (if it's changed since last time I used it).
I can then start RDP and connect successfully.
So it looks to me that there's still a problem with Microsoft RDP 8.0.10 and Yosemite.
NB - if you're using Cisco Anyconnect for the VPN connection, there is a new version which has been marked specifically as "Yosemite compatible".  I've installed this too, though I was still able to use the above technique with an older version of AnyConnect.

  • Email not working since Yosemite upgrade

After upgrading to Yosemite, I couldn't receive emails on my Mac, but I could on iPad and iPhone.  After 2 hours on the phone with Apple, it was discovered the fix for the problem was with my internet provider.  Once we got in touch with them, they fixed it in a matter of seconds.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X

  • Some DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

some orginial / genuine DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

Once your husband copied the movies, did he use a burn software to burn them to a DVD? You need to use a burn software to properly encode the footage so it'll play in any DVD player/computer/TV. So, once the movie is copied to your hard drive, you can edit it in iMovie (may need a converter first to get it into a format iMovie can work with such as MPEG Streamclip); after you're done in iMovie, use iDVD if you have it or Roxio Toast to burn it to a DVD.
And for the OP: Regions are different depending on where the movie was made: the US, Europe, etc. The regions are set within DVD player  - you insert a DVD and the player reads what region it originated in. Please note you can only change regions 5 x; after the 5th, that setting will remain and can't be changed again.

  • HELP!!! iTunes not playing after lastest upgrade

My iTunes is not playing after lastest upgrade, and i onli hear a lo buzzing sound wiht i hit the play button, and the diamond thingy is still moving. I tried reinstalling and re importing the music files, but i juz wouldn't work. help

Nope i did not have any success with the other possibilities, other then the one concerning the hardware.
hmmm. okay, if you switched sound enhancer off, that probably would have covered that possibility anyway.
we'd better check your video drivers as well as your sound card drivers. (old video drivers can cause problems with Quicktime that can show up as itunes audio problems, since QT provides audio playback for itunes.)

  • REMOTE DESKTOP (MICROSOFT) NOT WORKING SINCE YOSEMITE UPDATE.  ANY ONE KNOW A FIX FOR THIS ?

MICROSOFT RDP HAS WORKED FINE WITH YOSEMITE.
AIRPORT UTILITY IS UP TO DATE.
SINCE YOSEMITE UPGRADE THERE IS NO ABILITY TO CONNECT FROM HOME TO OFFICE.
IOS DEVICES CAN CONNECT BUT THEY ARE CELLULAR ANYWAY SO IT SEEMS TO BE CONNECTED TO THE WIFI NETWORK.
I AM RUNNING MY CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET ON A RECENTLY PURCHASED NETGEAR ROUTER.
THERE IS ALSO A TIME CAPSULE IN MY SETUP.
    ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

Thats a good point. Let's troubleshoot network connectivity.
Open RDP, right click your connection and select edit, then copy the PC name.
open terminal Finder > Utilities > Terminal and type the following
    telent YourPCName 3389
where "YourPCName" is the name you copied above. Hit enter
You won't get a "success" message or anything, if the terminal window just goes blank, then there is not a firewall/network issue.
If you clearly get an error, then it's either Firewall or DNS. Try the following in terminal
    ping YourPCName
if it starts showing an IP address, line by line by line, then it is definatelly a firewall issue
if not, trying getting the IP address from the winders box by opening a command prompt and type
    ipconfig
do all the above again but use the IP address in place of YourPCName

any advice on what could be wrong?
at first i was thinking this was a memory problem, i added another Gig of ram and the problem still exhists.
    thanks!

    Hi Crazy Dan:
It's a kind of bug in DVDSP Simulator. If you build your project in your hard drive and test it with DVD Player all video will play fine.
I would like to tell you where exactly the problem is located, but it's just a Simulator problem.
    Try building your project.
    Hope that helps !

Video portion of Nightwish DVD not playing correctly on Quicktime.  It is not a smooth playback. A little jerky. Is there an easy slution to the problem?

I worded my question incorrectly. It isn't a DVD I'm having the problem with, it' s a Nightwish concert download form iTunes I am having the video portion of the video that plays not smoothy. Like it is moothing it short little segments, not a steady flow!

  • DVD from converted Super 8 won't play since system upgrade?

DVDs converted from Super 8 in 2009 previously worked fine on Mac, but since recent upgrade to 10.8.4 (?from 10.6.8) video will not play, although audio does. Info from disk includes: UDF (Universal Disk File?); DVD Player Document, Unix Executable File, Video_TS.BUP and .IFO and.VOB, VTS_01_0.IFO or .VOB on different files. Still work OK on DVD player with TV. Any suggestions appreciated. Has probably been 1-2 years since last viewed.

    Hi Gail
Are you able to first create a disc image and then use Apple's DVD Player Application to open this disc image? Let us know if it plays correctly directly from the disc image. If it does, then it may be you have a media issue. What kind of media did you burn to? Try using Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R and burning from a disc image at 4x or slower using apple's Disk Utilities or Toast.
If the above fails to resolve this issue then repair permissions on your Hard Drive. Also drag and drop the plist for iDVD to the trash. Looks like this:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
Empty the trash and Restart the computer.
Lastly, make sure to run apple's software updater for iDVD6 as well as for QuickTime.
Good luck and hope this is Helpful.

  • Netflix dvd not playing on iMac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Netflix dvd's are no longer playing on my iMac. I never had this problem before, it started about 2 months ago. I don't have any other dvd's to test out. I have OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Any suggestions?

    Hi mputnam80,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iMac is not playing DVDs that you receive from Netflix and you have no other DVDs to test out. In this situation, I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article to help isolate and resolve the situation.
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer - Apple Support
    Specific troubleshooting
Below are several possible symptoms you may see. Follow the steps for the appropriate symptom to figure out whether the issue stems from the drive or the media. Be sure to inspect discs before use to ensure they are not cracked, scratched, or otherwise damaged. Inspection should include the inner ring of the disc which should be smooth and burr free. A disc with physical defects may become stuck in or cause damage to the drive.
    Doesn't accept discs
Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times.
Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc.
Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out.
Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • AC3 is not playing since upgrade to FCStudio 3

Hi, I'm trying to build a DVD with DVD studio pro (files exported from FCP (m2v + ac3), but the sound is not playing when I both simulate and burn the DVD. If I open the ac3 file with quicktime, I can hear the sound.
    Any clues?

does the ac3 play in the track? Not in simulate mode, but in the track view? If it doesn't play there then there is some problem at the origin.
What's it look like in the list of assets? Is there an error indicated?
Something might be wrong in the export.
Try going through compressor instead of right out of FCP
