DVDs stop playing

Why would a DVD stop playing? How can a person make a DVD and be sure it will play? Several persons that I have made DVDs for have said that their DVD suddenly stops playing. These DVDs were made with iDVD the "one step to movie" selection under iDVD/File.
I first created a slideshow with Keynote and then exported it to a QuickTime movie and used the QuickTime movie for the iDVD "one step to movie" and burned several DVDs "at the same

Often, that symptom is caused by errors in the burning process. "One Step" can be fine, but I prefer breaking down the process (if you search on "Save as disk image" you'll see concurrence and instructions). Errors can also be the result of low quality disks - Verbatim DVD-R disks are often recommended around here (I also like Sony).

I have a HP Touchsmart Desktop 7350 (windows 7 Service pack 1 - 64 bit) - my dvd drive stop playing blue ray dvds (playe before and still play regular dvds).  Did drive/software update to no avail (says: software and driver up-to-date).  Is there another troubleshoot?

    Rob,
Not sure which OS you are running, but there is an updated version of the player software for Win7 that might make a difference...

Otherwise, you could try uninstalling the application, and reinstalling it from application recovery.

  • Pavillion 15 Notebook - CDs, DVDs stop playing after 40-60 seconds

CDs and DVDs start playing normally (sound and video) but stop after 40-60 seconds. For DVDs the Cyberlink Power DVD Error message refers to a "Code - 0102". For CDs the message just says "PowerDVD12.exe has stopped working". All worked when purchased 4 months ago, but stopped working in last month. Tried updated PowerDVD software but no improvement. Reverted to original.
    Can anyone help please?

  • A DL dvd stops playing

I burned a DL DVD with iDVD software on my iMAC PC. Then on my home DVD player the disc stops playing after 1 hour 12 minutes. Does anyone know what I can do?

Hi Klaus, I have made other DVD's of 90 minutes or more on Dual Layer, but not on my iMAC. They work fine, and still play in my DVD player today.
I am using DL in order to achieve best quality. I can make the same DVD of 90 minutes on Single Layer, but the quality is not so good. The single Layer plays ok from beginning to end without stopping, leading me to believe that the problem occurs on the Double Layer, possibly at the time it switches to the second layer, but I don't really know this.

  • CD/DVD stops playing after short period

I give up, I need help. My CD/DVD will stop playing CD after about 1 min. I can play and copy DVDs. When I rip to windows Media Player or I pod It rips each track then shows unavailable on the I pod. Help!

i mentioned in another thread that you can get interference from other wireless devices in you house of even from your neighbors house if they are close enough. 2GHz range cordless phones, microwaves, your neighborgh WiFi network.. does it happen all the time?
could test to see if it's related to wireless interference by 1st using a wired ethernet connection to the AppleTV and if the skipping goes away then you know it's most likely due to the wireless
you could try changing the channel that your wireless router uses so it doesn't overlap with other devices in your house or your neighbor's OR some routers allow you to use the 5GHz range as another option (not sure if this is allowed in the States?)
forgot.. the other thing is that it might just be your computer going to sleep resulting in the stream stopping.

  • DVD stops playing and freezes

I have the new iLife and I created a iMovie then with iDVD created a DVD project. I burned this on a TDK DVD+r and a Memorix DVD-r. They both "hang-up" while playing and freeze. Then they start again, but then freeze again. The places that they freeze are different each time. The DVD-r plays perfectly in my computer, but eh DVD+r also stops and "pixalates" What have I done wrong? Any help would be appreciated. I did read through the forum and couldn't find anything to address this. There was one post that mentioned getting Verbatim DVDs but they aren't available in the US. Another post mentioned getting Memorix, so I did try that.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Is your slideshow using still photos, created in iDVD and have more than 99 slides? And is the pause at the 99th slide? That is to be expected since iDVD, in order to get around the 99 slide chapter limitation (each slide is a chapter when added directly to an iDVD slideshow), it starts the chapter numbering over at 1 when it reaches the 100th slide. That is what creates the slight pause.
Using top notch media and burning at the slowest speed available as already suggested will help minimize the pause between slide 99 and 100.
If that's not what you're experiencing I will disavow any knowledge with this post and it will self delete.

  • DVD stops playing mid-way

I'm stumped. I'm trying to troublehoot a problem a co-worder is having where they authored a 17 min. DVD that that simply stops playing suddenly in a standalone DVD player right at the 5 minute mark. Captured and edited DV video in FCP. There were initially some offline clips and unrendered clips when I looked at it, but I deleted or rendered all those. No go. I even tried exporting the whole sequence as a QT, re-imported, re-encoded and burned and it still stops right at 5:00. Strange. Plays fine in the DVD SP simulator, but the burned disc won't play on the Mac or in a player. We're using our usual reliable Verbatim media. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Thanks for the replies, but I don't think its any of those usual suspects. Total length is 17 minutes or something like that. 7.0 CBR MPEG-2 with 224 kbps Dolby 2.0. No labels. We're thinking there's something wrong with the drive because apparently he's had similar trouble with other projects recently. But I wanted to make sure there wasn't something simple in the software we're missing.

  • Dvd stops playing

DVD was playing. It got about half-way through and then it said "skipping over bad section". Ejected the disk. When disk was inserted, it wouldn't play and was ejected. Tried another disk and it was also ejected.

    Hi l,
You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

  • Media smart DVD stopped playing blue rays and no longer responds

I have a DV5z-1200 cto, os win7. i watch a lot of blue rays on it. i just purchased the new tron bluray and half way thru it froze. i tried to shut the machine off but it wouldnt respond. i was able to get into set up and noticed i had a new update (4.something). so i did it and now i get nothing. the drive just keeps rereading the same spot. i have uninstalled the update and when this happened Mediasmart stopped working all together. i reinstalled all the older versions but i couldn't find my original version 3.8 or something like that. i could then get a blu ray to start but now the message about you need to contact your firmware provider on the disk keeps popping up and the disks no longer play. can some one please help.

Uninstall your present Media Smart with Revo Uninstaller, use the trial.
     http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
Restart and install CCleanr and run it's registry cleaner and repeat until it finds nothing. When it finds nothing restart the machine. It will give the option to save a back up of the registry files you are about to delete, save these all as a precaution and note where they have been saved.
Personally I have never had to reinstall the files, but I like to save them anyway, and when you are satisfied that everything is fine, then you may delete them.
     http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Here is the Media Smart DVD file.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-87326-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...
Save this to the desk top and right click to go to properties, and in the "Generals" tab it should read Size: 55,380,920 bytes and Size on disk: 55,382,016 bytes. If this is incorrect then you must disable Webroot Internet and try again.
If it is correct down load 7-Zip and right click to "extract files" open that folder and find the  "src' file. Open that and look for "Setup" the sixth one from the bottom. Click on that to install.
http://www.7-zip.org/download.html  (the one at the top of the list, type exe for 32 bit W7)
Before following this procedure for installation, make sure that you have disconnected from the internet and that your Webroot security is totally disabled. Remember to restart your machine after installing Media Smart and when it says "Press Play to Play" do not do this, it should load by it self.
This is a slightly older version, but I have tested with Tron and Harry Potter with ATI graphics and I know it works. The most recent on your support page is having a problem with some of the ATI graphics cards.
This procedure was discovered by another member on the forum, DavidPK, and so far has been the most successful. I am also hoping that disabling WebRoot will solve the problem here.

  • Burned DVD stops playing but soundtrack ok

    Hi
When I burn a DVD it burns visuals up to a certain point and then stops. So when I play the DVD I get so far and then picture freezes. The soundtrack seems to be ok though so not sure why this is happening. Anyone any ideas ?

    Hi spaceface:
What are you playing it in? The mac DVD player or a
    stand alone?
    Sue
    Hi Sue
I am playing it in a DVD player but same problem exists when playing on the Mac. Ive re-tried and heres a copy of the error message I am receiving - probably will narrow the problem down somewhat !
Errors were found during the buring process.
The recording device reported the illegal request: Buffer underrun. (0x21, 0x02.)

  • My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

My Mac has suddenly stopped playing my DVDs including a DVD it played fine only 3 days ago. I insert the DVD and wait for the player to start automatically but after 10 minutes, nothing is happening and it sounds like the disk has stopped spinning. I've now tried with four different DVDs (all store bought and so perfectly normal disks). The Mac doesn't eject the disk or anything it just doesn't seem to respond to it being there at all.
My main confusion is why this suddenly happened today when it was perfectly fine last week.
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong and how I could fix it? Thank you.

  • IMac 9.1 has stopped playing DVDs, ejects them after about ten seconds without reading them

This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?

I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click  Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.

  • Exported slideshow from Iphoto11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine but show stops 1/2way through because DVD has 2 chapters. How do I eliminate chapters?

I exported slideshow from Iphoto 11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine, but then when playing on DVD player show stops about 12 way and starts over. Seems there are 2 chapters in show. I wan t show to play straight through until end. How do I elimiante chapters or solve problem. Thanks. Bob Low

    Try this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Play the disk image with DVD Player and see if you get the same start over half way thru.
Did you create the slideshow in iPhoto in the slideshow mode?
or were you in an album and then used the Share ➙ iDVD menu option?  What I'm trying to find out is if the slideshow in iDVD is a movie file or an iDVD slideshow with the photos from iPhoto? If it's the latter how many photos in the slideshow?

  • DVD Player Just stopped Playing DVDs

Just today, the DVD player has stopped playing DVDs on my ibook. I tried putting in a multitude of diferent DVDs, but I always got the same result: the disc image would not appear in the desktop, and the DVD player would open, as if it were in standby, but it would not play. Any idea as to what may have happened/how I could remedy this?

    Hello,
Follow these steps and you should be on your way to watching your DVD's:
    1) First, Quit DVD Player if open.
    2) Eject your DVD.
    2) Go to: Home > Library > Preferences.
    3) Find the file called: com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist and move it to the trash.
    4) Insert your DVD.
    5) If necessary, launch DVD Player.
    I hope this works!
    -Jason
(If these steps do not work, reply back and I will try something else)

  • Stopped playing DVD's

MBP 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo stopped playing DVD's.  THe DVD's work fine in my other MBP 2.4 Core Duo with the same hardware.  My 2.6 spins about 15-20 seconds then ejects.  Some posts say it's firmware, others say it's hardware failure.
The firmware noted in system profiler of non-working Mac 2.6 is: AP12
The firmware noted in system profiler of working Mac 2.4 is: ZA0E
Is the 2.6 Mac up to date?
    Suggestions?
