DVDSP 4 - How long to burn

Here is a question: 2 pass VBR at highest rating 30 minute piece first play no template or menus. How long to encode and burn. G5 1.8 DP, 2GB RAM, Pioneer 110 16X DVD burner.
Thanks for any answers.
G5 DP 1.8, 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

How to answer?
Just try it.
But the better approach is to encode video in Compressor 2, and audio to Dolby2 AC3.
Why do it inside of DVD SP?

  • HOW LONG TO BURN BLU RAY VIA COMPRESSOR 3.5?

Does anybody know the ballpaerk figure as to how long a 115 minute FCP 7 project exported to self contained movie and brought into Compressor 3.5 to burn a blu ray disk on an external blu ray writer will take? Is Roxio Toast any faster? Thanks much for your help.

This is getting more interesting by the minute. I have now set the project up as two blu ray DVD's -each around 72 minutes. When I go to 'send to compressor' from fcp 7, if I select HD DVD 90 minutes (assume that is the correct method as there is no 'blu ray' option) and then set Job Action to Blu Ray, I get the message with that nice little yellow triangle warning stating: "Cannot create Blu Ray disc as no target that is either mpeg 2 video elementary stream or H.264 stream". The fcp project in compressor is dolby digital prof. 2.0 and HD H.264 6.75 mbps.
I'm obviously doing something wrong here(?)
The HD DVD presets create files that are usable in DVD Studio Pro for making HD DVD's - not for authoring Blu-ray discs.
Here's what you need to do:
Create a new preset from "H.264 for Blu-ray".
Leave the video format and frame rate set to automatic, but lower the bitrate down to 20 Mbps with a max of 25 Mbps.
Then add a Dolby Digital Audio track as a second target.
Under job action set to create blu-ray disc but save it to the hard drive rather than trying to burn directly. (I know this an annoying extra step but there's been issues reporting with burning Blu-ray/AVCHD discs over 10 minutes in length.)
This will get it onto a single disc and 20 Mbps h.264 will still look pretty good.

  • How long to burn a DVD

I am trying to transition from Windows to Mac using FCP and DVD Studio Pro on a G5 (twin 2.7 processors, not the new Quad). I was surprised to find a 42 minute DVD took almost 90 minutes to encode and burn to disc. The steps I took were:
Exported Quick Time Movie from FCP
Ingested QT Movie into DVD SP
    Dragged movie to time line
No menus or chapters, just a straight burn of a window dub sequence, so
Deleted menu, reset First Play and End Jump
Then I hit the Burn icon on the tool bar and 90 minutes later, G5 spit out a disk. It plays fine, but that seemed like an inordinate amount of time compared to my Windows experience using Liquid Chrome / Adobe Encore.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a normal amount of time?
    Thanks!
G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   7 TB ProMax SATA RAID

What happens is that the FCP movie had to be encoded to m2v first (your preferences can have it encode in the background or on the build)
Depending on the encoding settings (one pass or two pass) it can take some time. And 90 minutes is not bad for that project. Remember what you are doing here is all software based, Liquid Chrome has hardware encoder you were using(?) which is always faster (there are some hardware solutions out there for Mac still I think).
Anyway it once took me 36 hours to encode two hours of maaterial on my older mac using software (bitVice) now with a quicker computer (slower than yours) 3hrs 20 Minutes took about 16 hours, so I would lovel to have the speed you have

  • How long to burn this DVD

    Hello all,
My son has made a movie in I-movie, then converted it to IDVD.
    The file size is 283.4MB.
When he goes to burn to DVD it says it will take 90 minutes.
    This seems too slow.
He is using my I-mac 10.5.6 with 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo
    It has 1GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Are we doing some thing wrong? Any ideas greatly appreciated..... Jim

    Hi
using strange file formats eg MP4 makes iDVD to have to back convert first then
    encode.
90 minutes for a 65 minutes movie seems not to be near extreme at all.
    There are three qualities
iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
So choosing Best Performance - will not work.
iDVD ONLY care about duration - movie + menu (keeping menu simple => more to movie)
Pro Encoding Quality = about double encoding time. (the result I love it)
    Yours Bengt W

i don't believe you can, directly
i think the easiest way would be to export the podcast as two sections:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#exportsections
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
to iTunes. create a playlist for each, and then burn each playlist to disc.

  • How long a DVD can I burn?

I've got 93 minutes of video. When I import it into iDVD, it says something to the effect that it may be too long to burn to a DVD. These are VHS home movies that I converted to mp4 and then edited in HD6. The file in iDVD is about 34 gigs. Will this fit on a single DVD? What settings should I use, and how long can I expect it to take to burn? Also, if I want several copies, should I burn one and copy it or burn several?

Yes, 93 minutes should easily fit on a standard DVD. You can get up to 2 hours, with allowance for menus. The setting that you should use is Best Quality (which is for DVD projects longer than 1 hour). Burn time can vary, but it takes me about 1 hr to burn a 30 minute project at 4x speed. So perhaps around 3 hours for your 93 minute project if you use the same speed. You cannot vary your burn speed with iDVD, but if you save the project as a Disk Image (an option on the File menu), and then burn it using the Utilties/Disk Utility app on your Mac, your burn speed will default to 4x. Most opinion on this forum is that optimum burn speed is 4x or less to avoid burn errors and have your disk be more universally compatible on DVD players.
Probably the reason that iDVD says that your project may be too long to burn to a DVD is that your burn setting is Best Performance, which is for projects less than one hour duration. When you burn at Best Quality, as I suggested, your longer duration project will be more compressed to fit on a standard DVD.
Regarding copies, I would burn several. If you save your project as a Disk Image and burn from there with Disk Utility as I mentioned above, all the encoding will be done in the creation of the Disk Image, and after that you can burn several more copies in about 10% of the time, in as many sessions as you want, because the encoding already has been done. You can do the same thing burning through iDVD, but you would have to keep the project open and continue inserting blank disks, because once you shut down the burning you will have to start all over again with the encoding.
    Hope this helps.

  • About how long should it take to burn slideshow onto a DVD w/ duo core iMac

I posted this under in the general forum and rec'd no responses. Perhaps I should have started here....
    Q. About how long should I expect it to take my iMac to convert, then Burn an iPhoto slideshow (comprised of 130 338kb pictures) onto a DVD? I've done this twice (from iPhote, going to Share, then clicking "DVD") and each time it has worked perfectly. However, it seems to take about an hour or more to complete. Is this normal/ expected?? Please understand that this is my first Mac and I've never had a PC w/ a DVD burner, so I'm not sure what to expect. ..I tried running a search for the question but came up empty.
    Thanks!

I am also doing one right now and it is taking awhile.
The images are very large though, 1 mb each.
They look great, but the transfer from iPhoto to iDvd is taking forever.
    Is when your system lags?

  • How do i burn a DVD on my MacBookPro OSX 10.9.1 when iDVD is no longer available?

How do you burn a movie from iMovie on a MacBookPro OSX10.9.1 when iDVD is no longer available?

    Buy iDVD.
Yes, there are other programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.  (works with all Mac OS 10.5 to 10.9.2)

There is a faint image stuck on my screen. I have tried setting the sleep to a solid white for the past 24 hours and it doesn't seem to have helped much (maybe a little). How long does it usually take for the burn to go away. Are there other methods I should try? Any help is apprieciated.

I assume that you are using a debit card as opposed to a credit card. Making a purchase when you know that there is not money in your account when you make the purchase is check kitting and you can go to jail. But hey... if you want the music that bad it is up to you.

  • How can I burn dvds of videos and pictures on my iphone?

I have a PC and would like to find out how I can burn a cd with video and pictures taken with my iPhone.  Also, will the video be in HD on the disc that I create?  Thanks!

You will need to have those files available for the process on your computer because this is a task which cannot be accomplished from the iPhone. You will need a disk burning utility on your computer (Roxio's software comes to mind as a possibility). The quality of the output is entirely dependent upon the nature of the original files and the capabilities of the software application. They can be written as a data disk or, in the case of the video, written as a movie so long as it is an unprotected file (from your own capture, for example). This entire operation has to be worked through on your computer. There is a minimal degree to which you can edit your captured video in the iPhone (3GS or 4) but it does not compare to the scope that would be available to you in a proper editing application on the computer.

  • How do you burn photos to CDR from Iphoto. 9.5.1

How do you burn photos in Iphoto 9.
You used to do it from Share and now I can't find the instruction.

That feature has been discontinued.  One can no longer burn a "mini" library from iPhoto to disk.
To burn photos to disk with iPhoto 9 and later the photos must be exported to a folder on the Desktop and that folder burned to disk via the Finder.

There is no proper substitute for iDVD.

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • How do i burn an iMovie project to DVD on new mac that doesn't have IDVD? (new mac user)

    Hi All,
Please help, im very new to the MAC world but as all my collegues use them and worship the ground they walk on i jumped ship. During this process i offered to produce my friends wedding DVD, i had three cameras and have chopped it all together and found Imovie really easy to work with. My problem now is after reading the forum IDVD no longer exists (although confusingly the export to IDVD is still on the software.
I am left with a wonderful wedding DVD that i cant get onto a DVD. please help my friends have watched their video on computer but it would be nice to get it onto some proper DVD with a title menu ETC and a case.
as mentioned above im very new to MAC so be nice lol.
    Thanks in advance

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
And here is a post from Creative Techs describing how to use Burn.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many options, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates. It is no longer sold by Apple, but you can find it on sites like Amazon and eBay as part of the iLife 11 retail package. The iDVD application has not been updated since 2006, so past versions back to iLife 06 should work.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain. But it does a good job, and can provide other functions as well, such as burning a BluRay disk.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates, but it is useful for creating a DVD of a single movie. It can also create a BluRay playable disk.
Burn can make a simple DVD, but does not have the menu flexibility or the templates of iDVD. If you only need to make a one-off DVD, Burn is sufficient and free. If you make a lot of DVDs, get one of the paid packages.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can also use SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.
I very rarely make DVDs anymore, because I make my videos in high definition. With any DVD software, your movie will be reduced to standard definition and will look pretty bad on most large screen TVs. I have to remind myself that many people still have small TVs.
