DVDSP creates HVDVD_TS folder - disk won't play

When I attempt to create a DVD I get one that will play on my Mac but not in a standard DVD player - I've tried several. DVDSP creates a disk with one folder - HVDVD_TS containing .BUP and .EVO and .IFI files.
A start with Final Cut Pro with files either created in Compressor or QuickTime. I have tried h.264, Apple ProRes 422, or straight to MPEG2.
Any ideas?
Thanks

You created a HD DVD disc, which only plays in some (now defunct) HD DVD players. To create a disc that will play in standard DVD players, you must create a SD DVD.
In your Outline, click on your disc then look at the Inspector. Under the General tab change your setting from HD DVD to SD DVD.

  • IDVD disk won't play on the computer that created it.

    I am running iM6.0.3 on a G5 MAC with OS X 10.3.9.
My problem is that after I create a movie with iMovie, and burn it to a DVD disk using iDVD, the G5 Mac that I created it on cannot then read the disk. It just ejects it. No disk icon ever appears on screen. However, the DVD disk plays fine on my consumer DVD player, even my Windows PC, and also on other Apple computers. Commercial DVD disks play fine on my G5. It just won't play the disks that I create on it.
One other factor: I am burning these disks to Hewlett-Packard DVD-R 16x disks. I have heard that there can be a problem burning to 16x disks on iDVD that is rated for 4x, but I have had no difficulties that I am aware of. I am wondering if perhaps my G5 cannot read the 16x disk on playback, and I should be using 4x. ( I just don't have any 4x disks handy at the moment.) But then, why would other apple computers and DVD players be able to play my 16x disks?
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Any comments would be much appreciated.

    Hi Rich,
    Just my comments:
DVD issues have plagued the Mac OS since 10.0. I have the same problem. DVD's I created on my machine are the same regardless of how they are created (data DVD or "Movie"). When it doesn't immediately eject them back out it will ask me what I want to do with the blank DVD I have inserted yet another machine plays them just fine. A DVD contains two "tracks" one is about 1 GB± and is unaccessible to users with consumer products (including most "pro" apps) and contains the information for the various types of DVD Players to know what to do with the data including the manufacturers info i.e. type of DVD (RAM, ROM, -R -RW etc) as well as read/write speeds. One very important piece of information is the time-code. DVD uses SMPTE time-codes and Mac OS X as you've experienced can write them but cannot seem to read them properly, that's why they work on the other machines and not the one that created them. Even if the Mac isn't writing them 100% the DVD playback SW in most set top boxes can compensate for this error as they are expecting data from all types of SW and burners. I am assuming the "other" macs are most likely G4's as this is my experience.
Write speeds should not be as much as a factor as they appear to be. Trying to burn 16X to a 4X disc would be a problem (most burning SW would prevent this anyway) but 4X to a 16X disk should not. I have tried every disc speed and setting and it is always the same.
This is what I know on this subject. It also appears to be the reason for the 60 min limitation as well. Apple's replacing DVD drives at an extremely high rate and many of them are most likely returning to service in another machine as there is nothing mechanically wrong with them. Apple care does not test the equipment the same way as the manufacturer/remanufacture and most Apple HW tests indicate they are in working order as well, however if they can duplicate the issue they replace the drive. You can have them replace the drive but the problem will most likely persist.
At this point my only hope is that Leopard resolves these issues but because they've persisted for so long I am not getting my hopes up.
I can't install 10.3.9 on this machine but I am curious if you went back to a QuickTime version prior to 7 if that makes any difference. You will lose some functionalities here as QT is actually part of the OS and updates have added functionality that was previously only available in 10.4 such as it allows the video apps to use the graphics card instead of the processor whenever possible so you will notice a slow down and possibly an elimination of "real time" editing in most apps and some of the Quartz video effects will no longer work.
Sorry I don't have any solution but am quite certain this is what the problem is.

  • DVD created in iDVD '08 won't play

    Hey guys,
I'm kind of a newbie with the whole iDVD thing (it's my first time using it). I created a movie on a DVD9 (dual layer DVD) because it was too big for a regular DVD, according to iDVD. Ok, so I insert the disk after creating the project with the revolution theme and click on burn. It took about 45 minutes (for about an hour and a half worth of movies) and spit the DVD out when the timer said less than one minute remaining and it still said Multiplexing and Burning. I tried re-inserting the disk and waiting about 30 minutes but nothing happened.
So, I tried putting it in my DVD player and it wouldn't read it. I put it in my desktop PC running XP and it said the disk was blank. I put it back in my Mac and it played fine, like a normal DVD would (opened DVD player and started playing).
I thought I might have done something wrong so I created a new project (with the same theme) and added both movies (and waited for them to encode). I then burned it on another DVD9 and had the same thing happen (spit out with less than a minute left, won't play on DVD and blank on PC).
What should I do? Should I delete iDVD and reload it from my Leopard disk? Is there a setting I'm not checking? BTW, I left the mac alone on my kitchen table to do all the burning (no surfing or any other interaction while burning). Once I even got a kernel panic (the third time I tried it).
Oh, and when I inserted the disk into my Macbook and hit Get Info, it says the disk is only 3.63GB (I can see the TS_Video and TS_Audio files). Why did it tell me it was too big for a DVD5 then?
System: Macbook 2.2GHz, OSX 10.5.2 Leopard, 4GB Memory, 56GB free space on HD.

    Those are some good suggestions.
I'm going to check the encoding quality on my machine. I think I'm using best quality.
I have double the 25gb free space on my drive, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I didn't use iMovie. I edited the videos in Sony Vegas 8.0a Professional on my PC to encode my m2t files to MPEG-2 and transfered the MPEG-2 files to my mac's desktop and imported from there (drag and drop into the main page of the theme). The files play fine in Quicktime before importing them and the DVD plays fine on my mac after burning it.
I did choose to burn at highest speed, tho. I'll change that.
I'm using Memorex DVD+R DL (they've always worked flawlessly on my PC). I also have Memorex DVD-R DVD5s, but the program said it was too big for a DVD5 (the project is 4.8 GB on disk yet the DVD only had 3.6 GB of data on it).
I'll try the disk image and then burn using Toast or Nero on my PC and see if that works.

  • I made a slide show with music and random transitions in iPhoto.  I can't burn it to a DVD.  The burn button in iPhoto is not highlighted, and when I exported the slide show to iDVD, it lost the random transistions, and the disk won't play in DVD player.

Two problems:  1. My iphoto slide show loses its random transitions when I export it to iDVD.
    2. When I then burn it to a disk, the disk will not play in a DVD player, but only on my MAC.
    Any ideas?

The random transitions can only be random when played in iPhoto.
If you are in the slideshow mode and use the Share ➙ iDVD menu option a quictime movie will be created of the slideshow with the first random set of transitions and imported into iDVD.  The transitions, however,  will be fixed permanently and will not be changed again.
There is no way to get any sort of random behavior in an iDVD.  When it's burned to disk it's locked permanently.

  • IDVD disks won't play in home DVD player. They used to

    Hi, can you help
I'm using iDVD 5, iMovie 5, saving as disk image, mounting image and burning using Toast 6 to firewire LaCie D2 DVD burner. I have done this many times using same configuration, but not for a while. The disks created will play in the Mac, but not in the home DVD player.
I have tested the burner using a peecee and it creates other types of DVDs OK. This has got me stumped because I don't seem to be doing anything I haven't done before. I've tried different disks, cleaned the DVD player, everything. In addition I have tried burning disks from some old disk images I had saved from previous movie creations. Same result. Is the problem likely to be with Toast?

Still no luck. I have tried using some Verbatim -Rs and have the same results, if not worse, since the disks created won't mount in my Mac either.
In answer to klaus, yes the Mac does recognise the LaCie drive.
I'm starting to think the problem is with iDVD or iMovie since I have tried creating a disk image, copying to my Peecee, running through Shrink to generate a 'clean' series of Video_TS, Audio_TS folders, and burnt them from my peecee, which still doesn't work, even though I know that older and other movies play OK in my DVD player.

  • Burn Disk Won't Play in CD Player!

I can burn an audio cd in itunes succesfully, however when I try to play the audio cd on my car cd play it won't work....someone help!

Now I have this problem as well. I'm trying to burn an audio CD from iTunes that will play in my car.
At first I thought it was an iTunes purchased music issue, but I tried burning a cd containing a mix of music I've imported into iTunes and purchased from iTunes. Same result. I've tried changing settings, different cd brands with no success.
I have been able to create cd's from playlists for my car in the past, but now all of a sudden I'm having no luck. The burned cd's play fine in my computer and in other people's computers, just not in my car's cd player (tests ok with other cd's).
I've even tried importing a burned cd back into iTunes then burning a disk off of that playlist, with exactly the same result. The cd just clicks in the car cd player.
Hoping this is something really simple, hoping someone can help.

  • Audio created in Final Cut won't play in iTunes

I created a bunch of audio files in FCP that have the .wav extension.  They play fine in Quicktime (and the Finder preview), but not in iTunes.
I''ve tried to convert them in programs like Swtich and xACT, but they won't open in those, either.
According to Switch, these files have "Codec: Extensible Wave Format."
According to the VLC player (in which they do open) they have these details:
    Type:                               Audio
    Codec:                               pcm
    Channels:                     3F2R/LFE
    Sample Rate:                     48000
    Bits per sample:           24
What to do? Something in Final Cut?  Some other program?
I've tried garageband, too, but the audio just comes out silent.
    Thanks

Itunes needs .m4a files.  Go to the Share menu in FCP X and choose Export Audio. Choose AAC from the export formats.  It should say M4a below the AAC selection in the Export list.  Afterward you will need to get the file into your Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder to see it in your iTunes library.  You might have to import the file into iTunes from within iTunes.  Best wishes.

  • DVD-DL disk won't play on my iMac G5

I am having a problem playing a DVD-DL disk on my iMac G5. I burned it on a Windows computer, and it works there, but then I put it into my iMac G5, and it spits it back out! I also tested it on an older iMac G3 and it works on that as well! WHY WON'T IT WORK ON MY IMAC G5!!!! Anyone have any ideas?

Most likely Boot Camp has nothing to do with it. As you mentioned first try a restart when you can, if the doesn't help I would reset the nvram and pram and finally reset the smc. If that doesn't help you may have a hardware problem.

  • DVDs I've Created In The Past Won't Play Now ...  ???

As a part-time job, I videotape weddings with the end result being in a DVD format. I always make myself an extra DVD or two for my files in addition to the customer's copy.
Recently, I had a previous customer ask me for another copy of her wedding (this was a wedding I recorded about 14 months ago). When I went to put the DVD in my iMac, it wouldn't play at all. The disc would stay in the drive for a couple of minutes, and I could hear stuff going on, but then it would just spit back out. It was like this with both of my copies. I had to ask her for her original, and when I tried to play that one, it acted as if I had inserted a blank disk (that screen came up, asking me how I wanted to format it).
Just for kicks, I put in a movie I rented and it played fine, and other DVDs I've created more recently play fine. But I wonder what is going on with this particular disc??
    Can anyone help me??
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Not sure about the dvd playback but I do have a suggestion.
I do weddings too and I burn a disc image of every dvd I make for the very reason you indicate.
In the file menu choose 'save as disc image'.
iDVD will go thru a virtual burn session. You can burn the resulting image as a regular dvd using disc utility or you can burn the data file to a dvd right from the desktop. You can put it back on your computer anytime from that disc and burn extra copies that way.
This has saved me a lot of hassle since I first discovered it right here on the boards!

  • Video clips in PDF created from FM12 file won't play in Reader 11 or Acrobat 9

I have inserted several short video clips into a small manual created with FrameMaker 12 (all mp4 format). Book file is saved as a PDF. When I open the PDF in Acrobat 9 or Reader 11 and click on the icon for any of the videos, I see only a black box. When I open the same PDF in Reader 10, the clips all play just fine. What do I need to do to make these videos play in current versions of Reader. NOTE: I have Reader 10, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, and FrameMaker 12 running on my computer.

I have had this same problem myself with most Open Type fonts. It's very irritating, because it seems like most of the new fonts are being issued exclusively in Open Type.
I have developed a work-around, which you can attempt at your own risk.
Purchase the software FontCreator (I use FontCreator 5.6 Home Edition). It's not very expensive.
Open the problem font in FontCreator, and save it with a different name. In the process of saving it, the font will be converted to a TrueType font. Install the new version of the font. In my experience, you can then successfully use the font in Pagemaker, and convert it to a pdf.
This is not a perfect solution because there will be a *very* slight diminishment in the crispness of the lines of the font -- but this is only visible when the font is magnified to something like 6400% in Acrobat. It is not visible to the naked eye, or at least not to my naked eye.

  • PDF slide show created in PE 10 won't play

Slides are there and can be advanced manually, but audio track is missing and slides will not play as in a show.  Any ideas why?

don't think audio will play within a pdf slideshow.
That's right. Audio, transitions, pan and zoom, etc. aren't possible with the level of PDF that PSE creates.

  • Burned DVD from FCP on my iMac. Disk won't play on TV!

  • MP3 CD won't play on itunes

I'd like to reference an archived thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=240625&threadrate=2&messageid= 1202124#1202124
Looks like that guy was having similar issues. Doesn't look resolved there.
So my friend gave me an mp3 cd. I brought it in to work to listen to it there and did so just fine.
I bought it home, where I have itunes, and the cd just spins.
So I took it back in to work, copied all the mp3s onto a flash drive and took that back home again.
I cannot get itunes to admit that the mp3s exist. If I try to import them, nothing happens. if I try to double-click to play them... nothing happens.
I tried to go old-school and see if WMP could handle 'em (well, it worked at work, right?) and it said I was missing a codec.
I do, however, have other MP3s that play just fine... ( figures, I go to double check that this is still the case and iTunes won't even start up anymore.)
so it seems to think it is a codec issue. My knowledge of codecs is nearly non-existant.
    Any help?

Okay, an update (if anyone is actually reading this)
So my business computers apparently all automatically encrypt any data on the C drive now. So when I transferred the disk to the PC and then to my flash drive, it was probably encrypted in the process.
That'd possibly explain why they wouldn't play off the flash drive.
I'm still hung up on why the disk won't play in the first place tho'.

  • Many File Types dragged to iDVD, burned to DVD, won't play on DVD player

I have made a recording on Camtasia (video, pictures and audio). My goal is to make it into a DVD that plays on standard players. Any format I have saved the file to is not working.
Here's what I have done so far:
From Camtasia I have selected Advanced Export and saved it as a MPEG4. Then learned that MPEG are not recognized by many DVD players.
Then I did an Advanced Export and saved the file as Quick Time. Moved it into iDVD, burned the disk and again the disk won't play on either of my DVD players.
I have done another Advance Export and saved the file as an AVI but now only the first 3 minutes of a 30 minute video are being captured.
I know everyone can appreciate that each of these burn processes take a lot of time. I am doing them only to be disappointed (aggravated) that they won't playing on my DVD players (I have tried two). I am using Verbatim DVD +R.
If someone uses Camtasia and iDVD that would be ideal. But at this point, I'd also be willing to try another program just to get the job done.

    Hi Vicadea
Welcome to apple discussions. I've never tried Camtasia for Mac. Apparently it's not working very well for you even when you export as a QuickTime movie. I don't know what to say other than it seems like fairly pricey screen capture software ($299) just to have it not work as you expected on multiple attempts.
For much less money and much more reliable results I'd recommend the following for screen capture instead:
    http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.

InDesign Support Centre video "Getting Started - Create New Document" Video won't play. It just sits there with the waiting circle and does nothing. All other videos I've used so far are fine. Anyone shed any light on this problem?

Many thanks, works in Firefox! This is the only video I've found to exhibit this behaviour.
