DVDSP-DVD won't automatically play

I've authored thousands of DVDs using DVDSP and never run across this before. This disc I just authored won't play in the MacPro I used to author it. It'll play in set-top players, it'll play in PCs just fine—and also will play in my Quicksilver G4, but when I slide it into my MacPro, it spins up like it's about to play, but nothing happens. Other DVDs play just fine when I insert them, just not this one or any of the batch I made alongside it. I've checked the DVD Player prefs, and it's set to play a DVD when inserted. The blank media are Maxell DVD -Rs —which I've never really had problems with.
So the question is, is this a problem with the authored DVD, DVD Player or maybe my DVD drive is going out? Any ideas?

This is definitely a strange issue.
My bet is that it's the blank DVD-R media as what you have described sounds just like something one might encounter when working with DVD-Rs.
(Athough, it is very unexpected that the machine that burned them will not read them.)
If you have Toast handy, try using it to burn your DVD buid.  As Toast does a verification pass, you will know right away if the data on the disc that was just burned can also be read.
Another thing to try is to copy the VIDEO_TS data to you G4 drive and then burn it back to both the same Maxell media as well as a different brand.  Then, see if either of this play on your Mac Pro.
Report back on what you come up with.

  • From DVDSP4, how do I make a DVD (with menu) automatically play on a PC/Mac?

Using DVD Studio Pro 4, how do I set a DVD to play automatically when placed into a PC or Mac? This DVD includes a menu.
Is this only something that can be changed from within the computers (like the DVD player settings)?
    Thanks

If your DVD includes a menu, that is automatically set to "First Play".
You can change it by setting First Play to something else -perhaps you have a short intro movie, for example.
What happens next is determined by End Jump settings. After your intro, the end jump moves to the menu, for instance.
Read the manual. It is very clear. I taught myself DVD authoring in half a day when I got my first copy.

  • Flex app won't automatically play in Firefox

    Hello,
I've been having a problem that's I just can't seem to progress on and  hope that maybe someone here can help me out.
If you look at http://www.batstrading.co.uk/market_data/price_improvement/,  there's a Flex 3 applicationthat for some reason, in Firefox, you need to right click and then Play to  get the app to initialise and run. The strange thing is, it appears to  happen only on this server (it plays automatically from my development  machine).
I used to use the Adobe supplied JS and had modified that to ensure it  passed through the play="true" attribute to the embed tag, but that  didn't work. Looking through various posts, I found SWFObject, which  seemed to be a much nicer approach and have switched to that, but also  to no avail.
I have tried setting autostart=true, autoload=true, autoplay=true and  play=true (in both flashvars and params - flashvars seems wrong to me,
but I saw that in an example), but this isn't helping.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Aaron Watkins

One thing is that you must execute the embed code in a separate file. In other words, have the HTML (or PHP or whatever) do an include or reference on the JavaScript that actually embeds the SWF. If you don't do this, you often have to click on the control to activate it. After a very cursory glance at your site, though, it looks like you're doing that. However, you're referencing the swfobject.js file on google's server.
So this made me thing that maybe you need to have a local version of that file. I would try copying it from the source or from the Flex SDK directory and storing it locally on your server.

  • External HDs/CDs/DVDs won't automatically mount

I did a complete clean install of Mountain Lion the other week and since then whenever I plugin a pen drive, external hard drive or insert a CD/DVD it doesn't mount. It's all working fine but I have to open Disk Utility, choose the disk and then click 'Mount' to have access to it in the Finder. Is this some security setting I'm not aware of or is it a bug?
I searched for this on the discussions but could only find people with defective drives, not this specific problem of having to manually mount each drive/disc.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. Don't forget to check the Legend on the right side of this window.

  • I burn a DVD and it automatically plays from the beginning of the movie instead of displaying the main menu

I know there must be a simple solution or setting but I just can't seem to find it.

Go into the Map mode and make sure your movie has not been dragged into the blue "autoplay" bin at the left.  If it has drag it out of there and try again.

  • Problem: DVD won't loop after burning in iDVD '08

    I need help.
I made a slideshow in Keynote '08 and sent it directly to iDVD (iLife'08) for burning. I wanted to burn it to DVD and have it show continuously (loop) at a kiosk.
I selected the presentation and had set iDVD (Advance Menu) to "Loop". The loop icon showed up on the "map menu" for the selected presentation.
As I read in other forums, I also set the "button" for Play Movie with a TRANSITION.
After burning and playing it on two DVD players, the DVD won't automatically loop. It just freezes after it completes one play.
I also did the "REPEAT" button on the DVD Player Remote and still won't loop.
I went back to iDVD and removed the Loop option and burned DVD. I was hoping that I can play it back with just setting the DVD player itself to REPEAT disc. Again, the DVD won't repeat or loop.
I also converted the keynote presentation to quicktime first then moved it to iDVD for conversion and burning to DVD. The results are the same above.
I need to know if there is a step I am missing or a procedure not followed properly.
    Thanks in advance!

Check these instructions from iDVD Help to see if you missed anything.
+_Here are ways to turn looping on or off_:+
+Double-click a slideshow button on the DVD menu to open the slideshow editor. Click the Settings button and select the “Loop slideshow” checkbox.+
+Select a slideshow icon in map view, and then press Command-I to open the Slideshow Info window. Select the “Loop Slideshow” checkbox, and then close the window.+
+Click a movie or slideshow button on the DVD menu, or a movie, slideshow, or autoplay movie icon in map view, to select it, and then choose Advanced > Loop Movie or Loop Slideshow.+
+When looping is turned on, a checkmark appears next to the command in the menu. To turn off looping, select it again to remove the checkmark.+
+To turn looping off for a background movie on a menu, open the Menu Info window. With your pointer over the menu (but with no buttons or text items selected), press Command-I. Move the Loop Duration slider to zero.+
If you have followed these directions and are still having the same problem, give this basic remedy a try. Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
Do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
If the problem persists, do the following for troubleshooting purposes. While working on your project in iDVD, create a disk image. Go to File>Save as disk image. This will create a file that can be viewed on your computer's DVD player. You will be able to see just how your project will work when viewed on a regular DVD player. You will be able to catch errors and correct them before burning and possibly wasting a disk. If the disk image plays correctly, then you know that the encoding is being done correctly. This would point to problems with the burn process. If there are problems with the disk image, then the issue is with encoding.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's

iMac 2008 OS10.9.1 external dvd won't play movie DVD's. Other DVD/CD's are recognized.
My internal DVD/CD p-layer/burner stopped working 3 years ago like many other iMacs did.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is all red because I am ******!

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • Short content DVD won't play

I've had this problem for years, and I've finally decided to ask. Every time I make a short content DVD with under about 10 minutes of content, my finished Encore DVD won't play in some players.  The amount of data written by Encore is visibly small on the disc. I've noticed however, that if I take the same content, and master it in Nero rather than Encore, the content on the disc (burn area) is much larger and it plays just fine on every player.  Is there anything within Encore that I can change to eliminate this problem?
    Thanks for any thoughts.

"Probably" the reason nero doesn't have the problem is the same as for ImgBurn: it automatically pads the total size. I never remember to pad tiny disks anymore, because I have become dependent on the autopad!
Edit: I see John's second past! That's the other imgburn advantage here: let it figure out the addition!

  • My burned DVD won't play on DVD player or VLC

    Hi all,
I have a DVD that was burned by a colleague that will not play on any of the computers in my office. It opens automatically in DVD player and freezes on the title (there is no menu on the DVD) with the words "PLAY" in the bottom right corner and when I press play or skip or anything, either nothing happens or there is a "not permitted" message. The same thing happens when I try to play it on VLC and when it won't open in Quicktime. I have no clue what this could be as it plays on my computer at home and my Xbox and my colleague tested it on her own computer before she sent it over. Please help! This is incredibly frustrating.
BTW - when I double click the DVD it opens to two folders - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS but when I try to open any of the files, it just says there is no application to open the file and I wouldn't know which application to pick so yea. I'm screwed.

    Hi
The most common origin to this are:
    • Brand of DVD used - was to Cheap e.g. Memorex, NoName etc - known problem makers.
    • Type of DVD used - DVD+/-RW are a NO NO, DVD+R plays well on newer DVD-players - I use DVD-R
    • BURN SPEED - I always set this down  to x2 or max x4 - and it's so much better
    • Dusty DVD burner - I run a Cleaning DVD from time to others - NO LIQUID but the ones with brushes
    • Material feed to iDVD - doesn't suit - iDVD tries many Video-Codecs, Audio and Photo file formats it really can not handle = A BAD DVD.
    • Very low - FREE SPACE on Boot hard disk (I never go less than 25GB)
Usually one of these or all of them results in disaster.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Copying/burning a dvd, won't play in a dvd player

Before my disk drive was replaced I could take a dvd, copy it and burn it to a disc (i.e., make a copy for myself), ad it would pla in my dvd player
Since then when I make a copy of something and burn it, it won;t play in ant DVD player. Will play onthe computer though
What settings do I need to change?

Musicwind is right, there's no way to do what you describe without third-party tools. A commercial DVD, like what you'd be using in a DVD player, cannot be copied using the Finder or Disk Utility, due to copy protection issues. Are you using something like Handbrake to rip the DVD, or is this not a commercial DVD that you're copying?

  • DVD won't play in Quicktime

I have a training DVD from Vortex, about my Sony HVR-Z7, and it plays very well on any DVD-player, but when I try and play it on my Mac, I get the following message: *OSStatus failure* -1409. Any idea what goes wrong here? Dragging the DVD-icon to Quick-time does not help either: it won't start playing.

Thanks for the reply! I'm an newbie, coming from PC. Is there a standard application in Leopard that plays DVD's or do I have to download something from the web?

  • Dvd won't play in a PC

My dvd's have always played in any dvd player, but often won't play in a pc computer, even though the computer plays commercial and/or other dvds. Is there a setting/region/selection to accommodate pc's? Thanks - Pat

The latest "it won't play on my pc" feedback is from a brand new laptop (the feedback being from the owner, not the laptop). I can get the specs on it if that matters, but your answer sounds like there is nothing I can do about it anyway. I always write to a -R dvd. Do you think a +R would make a difference? Thanks. - Pat

  • DVD won't play in ordinary player

    Hi,
I'm quite new to the whole process of creating DVDs, so I tried using iDVD but it's a terrible program so Iäm trying to use DVD Studio Pro without knowing much about it. I've burned a DVD using it and it won't play on an ordinary player. It simulates fine in DVD Studio, and it plays back fine on the computer, but simply doesn't register in any DVD player. Can anyone suggest any reason why this might be the case?
Thank you all in advance for your help!
    Kinkersnick

Thank you for such a quick reply! Ok, so here's a bit more information. The DVD is actually only a single video (of about 60 mins.) which has the first play set to it - the little disc with play arrow on it in the graphical display. The disc is an SD DVD not an HD DVD (first, and only, thing I thought would be the problem). Here is a copy of the burning details:
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘WIMWENDERS.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
    Start formatting
    Formatting as Standard DVD
    Simulation mode is off
    Lossless linking is on
    Number of layers is 1
    Doing side 1 of 1
    Playable in region 1,2,3,4,5,6,8
    Disc size is 12 cm
    Disc has no copyright material
I don't know if any of this is relevant though. I#m confused as to what the two errors at the beginning mean... perhaps they have something to do with the problem???
The media used is DVD-R and has been tried in 3 different players, all relatively new, which suggests to me it's unlikely to be the media.
I'm at a total loss here, so I would appreciate any and all help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Kinkersnick

  • Burned DVD won't play on DVD player

I have downloaded a 22 minute video that I would like to burn to a DVD to play in my DVD player.  I have attempted on both DVD-R and DVD+R.  They burn to the disc but will not play on the DVD player.  The error message states that playback may not be available on this disk.  I have used the windows support search to problem solve on my own but have had no success.  I have ensured that I am selecting the CD/DVD player option to utilize the Mastered format.  I have gone into my option and have no filters on.  I have the video format on NTSC since I am from Pennsylvania/US.  I have not tried to burn it on slow or medium speed because it does burn to the DVD without problem it just won't playback on the DVD player.  What do you recommend as my next course of action for troubleshooting.
    This question was solved.

I would suspect that the video is not DVD Mpeg2 compliant.  Depending on the DVD player, some will play other formats, also.  If there are no video authoring programs on the computer, try Windows Movie Maker (free) to see if the video needs too be converted to DVD Mpeg2 standards.

You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.
