DVDSP prefs: 1440 or 1920?

Hi,
I shot a project using a couple of Canon XHA1's... I built my project using FCP6 and ended-up exporting a self-contained final version from FCP as HDV 1080i 60 QT movie.
I am currently using Compressor to transcode/convert that final video as HD DVD: H.264 60 Minutes.
My questions:
1. In DVDSP, in the preferences, should I choose 1440x1080i or 1920x1080i under "General" >> "HD DVD Menus, Tracks, and Slideshows"?
2. General question about resolutions: When I view the info on my HDV movie, via Quicktime, under "Format", why does it say "... 1440x1080 (1888x1062) ..."? I thought 1440x1080 footage expanded to 1920x1080 when viewing on a computer... why is it a bit smaller (i.e: 1888x1062)?
Many thanks for any help you can give me. I really appreciate your time.
Cheers,
Micky

I saved my old HV20 (HDV) videos as 1920x1080  simply to ensure simplicity and ease of playback plus compatibility with subsequent 1920x1080 footage.
1440x1080 video contains a flag that should tell the playback application to resize it to 16:9  but on occasions I have found that this is not recognised, so making it 1920x1080 will prevent that problem recurring.
Assuming you have the space, keeping both versions is the ideal  .  .  .  together with the original tapes.

  • 1440 to 1920 multiclip

hi, wondering the best quality option for mixing full size 1920 1080p footage in prores with 1440 1080 p hdv footage to edit in a multi clip. (they have to be exactly same format to work as a multiclip)
previously I converted the 1440 using compressor to convert from hdv format to pro res 1920
or would i be better capturing as prores then changing it from 1440 to 1920 in compressor
or I own a matrox mini and apparently that can capture from hdmi and convert to 1920? if this is true will that do a better quality job? then thru firewire?
not able to test it yet , wondering if anyone has experience of this?
    many thanks

I'm wondering the same thing. Getting into ProRes is the easy bit (especially using the excellent Ken Stone guide and the site he links to) However capturing HDV via ProRes results in a 1440 x 1080 clip rather than the full size 1920 footage you get from an AVCHD cam - so, how to get them both the same resolution so that FCP will let you mult clip them together..?
I have two live shows I need to resolve this for! Do we upscale the HDV originated ProRes files in Compressor? I'd imagine that will take a while, but what settings to use? Confused!

  • 1440 or 1920 when archiving

    Hi all
I am still using an old HDV camera when shooting material which goes into FCP X fine enough. I know I can't lay off to tape as I used to with the old FCP so it's important that I get the archiving correct. Thus, a conundrum. My project (or sequence) is set automatically to 1440 x 1080 within FCPX and if I do a straight export those are the dimensions the QT is set to. In the older versions of FCP, if I did a straight export, the QT would be 1920 x 1080. Should I therefore change the dimensions before exporting. Or am I just plain worrying about nothing!
    Thanks
    Richard

  • 1440 vs 1920

Ok I have been testing file sizes. so far
    1 hour of video =
    11GB HDV 1440x1080
    54GB Apple ProRes 422 1920x1080
    47GB Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080
    86GB Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080
    73GB Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080
Well the difference between 1920x1080 and 1440x1080 is 13GB for HQ and 7GB for Regular.
I have 200GB of available space for editing.
Would 1920 be better or 1440. I know that 1920 has more pixels and more size. But would it be worth it. The file size doesn't matter.
I will be adding many effects from "Motion Shake Color Livetype"
    My output formats are.
    1280x720 for youtube
    1920x1080 for computer viewing
    1440x1080 for Print to Tape

Hi Zak, you're speaking of HDV though, correct, not AVCHD. Apple even says here in it's documentation that FCP recognizes FULL AVCHD 1920X1080:
    "AVCHD Support
Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 includes support for AVCHD Full HD formats (full width, 1920 x 1080 pixels, interlaced) recorded by camcorders such as the Panasonic HDC‑SD3 and HDC‑SD5 camcorders. Also, spanned AVCHD clips are recognized."
I've got the new Canon HF11 and it still uses an HDV codec with anamorphic 1440X1080 scaling. I don't get it. Can't seem to make log and transfer use another codec. Pro Res 422 1920X1080 is selected in the A/V settings. Any ideas on this?
    Thanks,

  • 1440 or 1920....hmmmm

can someone help me comprehend this....i don't know what documentation can explain this seemingly foolish problem......
OBVIOUSLY MY HD IS 1920 X 1080, HOWEVER MY FINALCUT SETTINGS WINDOW SAYS OTHERWISE...TO FURTHER COMPLICATE THE ISSUE I WANT TO SHRINK IT 720 X 405
LOGIC WOULD IMPLY THAT HE EXPORT QUICKTIME VIDEO CONVERSION WOULD DO THIS, HOWEVER EVERY SETTING IN THAT WINDOW I CHOOSE HAS RENDERED SQUISHED OR CROPPED VIDEOS
    THANKS 4 YOUR WISDOM

oh, and please turn off the ALL CAPS thing. It is difficult to read and it the internet equivilent of shouting - not very reasonable if you want a response. While you're at it, go ahead and spell out words. This isn't text messaging.
As thrillcat has pointed out, a basic understanding of how video pixel dimensions work is the key missing component here. Once you grasp that, the rest should make sense.
    Good luck.

  • Mixing 1440 x 1080 with 1920 x1080

    I have two Canon video cameras, the XHA1 which shoots HDV @ 1440 x 1080 @ 23.98FPS and a Canon 7D which shoots H2.64 @ 1920 x 1080 @ 23.98 FPS. I want to inter mix them in the same Final Cut timeline of ProRes 422.
Since the majority of the footage was shot on the 7D I would prefer to up scale the XHA1 footage from 1440 to 1920. Can this be done and if so how?
    Thanks
    Kent

I am not cross posting. It would seem to me that I would need to convert the XHA1 clips to 1920 x 1080 and that I should do that in Compressor. I am not sure of what or if that can be done. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • DVDSP says .mov is not correct format

i'm exporting from FCP "using quicktime conversion" and trying to burn a DVD. When I bring the 3.99 GB file into DVDSP as a .mov, it says it's the incorrect format. I have tried exporting options with motion j-peg, converted to a 1.1 GB file, worked in DVDSP, burned, but when i put it in a DVD player, just a gray screen appeard. Someone please help. It's been 4 days now of trying all the different options and settings in FCP export options, and DVDSP prefs.

Just export without QT conversion and make it a self contained movie which you compress in Compressor to see if that helps

  • Can I disable the embedded encoder in DVDSP?

    Here's what I'm working with:
I export a 35 minute FCP timeline to Compressor. I use the 90 min MPEG-2 DVD Best quality setting in Compressor. I then import the MPEG with the associated Dolby audio assets into DVDSP.
When I simulate the burn, it looks great.
I "Build & Format" to my hard drive. (so I can use Disk Utility to burn the image at a slower burn than DVDSP will provide)
The DVD plays fine on every player we own, but the video quality is bad. Compression artifacts are very apparent. There are halos around people that are moving. Inanimate background objects have that annoying little "breathing" motion. Almost like they're alive!
In the beginning I was importing QT files later to learn from the manual that the embedded encoder is not optimal for that type of conversion. However, the end result using Compressor first doesn't look much different.
It was my understanding that if I pre-encoded the material to MPEG-2 before I imported it into DVDSP the embedded DVDSP encoder wouldn't re-encode it. Is that what's happening?...because the MPEG-2 file I'm importing looks good before the burn.
Just to note,....the DVDSP encode settings are set as follows:
    Field Order = Auto
    Mode = Two Pass VBR
    Bite Rate = 7.0
    Max Bit Rate = 9.0
    Motion Estimation = Best
    Ideas?

    Hi Jason
This does sound tricky - the only other suggestion that I can add to David's is to use the smallest GOP setting you can, I'm in PAL land so the default is 12frames but I push it down to 7, this forces more I-frames into your mpeg. It makes the file size higher but in a project your length it doesn't matter. Make sure you encode your audio to .ac3 (use the Dolby 2.0 preset in compressor). Although David's limit is 7.4, if I'm not playing back on a laptop I'll set my CBR to 8Mbps (in Compressor CBR is called 'one-pass').
Once you create your mpeg, play it back in Quicktime first to make sure there are no artifacts full screen (with Simulators reduced size sometimes artifacts exist in your orig mpeg that you may not notice).
Also as David said, DVDSP doesn't re-encode an existing mpeg so something else must be going on. Before you re-import your new mpeg, delete your DVDSP prefs and any menu mpegs that it has created.
If you have Toast, try just doing a Build, instead of Build & Format. This will give a VIDEO_TS folder that you can then burn in Toast. Use the Data tab and select DVD-ROM/UDF.
If this doesn't work I don't know what will.
    Good luck!

  • Edit H264 (1440 x 1080) video in FCP7 using MacBook Pro?

I have hundreds of H264 (1440 x 1080), 29.97 fps, 12.01 Mbps video files that I must review and edit very quickly.. I would like to edit them directly in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro that is about 8 months old with 8GB of ram. I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first. The files range in size from 30MB to a GB. I don't want to have to convert the files first unless I have no choice.
I also have some TOD HD files that I am have to convert since FCP7 will not edit them. I have started converting them to to ProRes 422 lte (unless someone tells me to do otherwise).
The output will be 1000 DVD.s for parents and students that expect a professional looking DVD.
I will not be doing any zoom or crop editing.
    I have three questions:
    1. Can I edit h2564 MPEG4 files in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro?
    2. If I have to convert first, Should I use ProRes 422 lte or something else?
    what should my settings be?
    Bit rate: 256, 512, 768 or 1024?
    Size: 640, 1280, 1440 or 1920?
    3. I tried using MPEG Streamclip, but it didn't seem to do as good of a job as another converter (Aunsoft)I was using. Is this my imagination? StreamClip is really fast and files are smaller, but quality is crucial.
I would greatly appreciate someone that can steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first.
This is not correct. The media needs to be converted to a production format to work properly in FCP.
    1. Not without rendering.
    2. ProRes LT. The bit rate doesn't matter. ProRes sets it. The size and frame rate should be the same as the original.
    3. Is this my imagination?
Yes. If Streamclip is used correctly it encodes as well as a basic Compressor encode.

  • DVDSP Producing a HDDVD_TS Folder

ok, here's what I am doing:
I'm taking a 3 minute clip in FCSP and sending it to compressor. When I'm done, I have an mpeg video file and an ac3 audio file.
I import those assets into DVDSP and build it so I can burn a DVD. The thing is, it's producing an HDDVD_TS folder rather than the video_ts and audio_ts folders I expect to see.
In my DVDSP prefs, I have it set to SD.
Can someone explain it to me like I'm a three year old so I'll understand how to send my three minute clip from FCSP to DVDSP via Compressor.
    Thanks
    Cliff

You need to set the project to SD and not HD. Once you convert a project to HD, you cannot change it back to SD. In your preferences set the default projects to be SD and start a new project.

  • Excessive Load Times????

Our project is taking 1 hour and 15 minutes to load! It is a big project but is this normal?

    Hi G-Man
This definitely is not normal. Try deleting your DVDSP prefs, deleting the PAR files related to the project and do a disc repair on your hard drive.
Check that all your QT, Pro Apps, etc are up to date, check that your RAM is OK
and try it again. If you still have the problem it might be reinstall territory.
    Hope you get it working.
    Cheers

  • Cinema Display to a MacBookPro. DVI versus Mini-Port.

Hello, Wanting to hook up a Cinema Display to a MacBookPro Intel Duo with the DVI port (not Mini-Port. Not Thunderbolt).
Is there an adapter that converts the DVI config to work with a Cinema Display with a Mini-Port connector or do I need the version of Cinema Display that has the DVI connector?
    Thanks!

First, HDMI is not limited to any one resolution and as of HDMI 1.3 has an capability of 2560×1600 which I think is higher than the 27" display.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
Oh, and obiously, the LED Display can go to lower resoltution.
    Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP597
And under System preferences, it looks like it will go from 800x600 to 2560x1440.

I would really appreciate you reviewing my current selections and determining whether or not I should upgrade or downgrade them, where applicable. Also, I would really appreciate you answering any questions found throughout my post. Thank you so much.
    I want my laptop to:
    1) Run RuneScape with no lag (except for lag from the game itself)

    Hi,
For computers/laptops, nothing is perfect. You always can find a better one tomorrow. Depending on what do you need/want you can buy a suitable laptop for TODAY.
    2. Processor: 2670QM should be fine
    3. Graphics: stick with 6770M
    5. HDD: I prefer 7200rpm HDD, in theory should be faster
    6. 6 or 6 cells is ok, again depending how long you use the machine w/o power point nearby
    7. It depends but I prefer full HD (1920 x 1080)
    8. I would buy BD/DVD combo as mentioed in the specs
    9. No choice anyway
    10. BT (Bluetooth) is a technology which allows you to transmit and receive wirelessly over a short distance (I really don't know how far it can go but my phone only works within around 10 meters). You can use it for a BT mouse, keyboard, phone ... Please read more information from this:

  • Poor image quailty from DVD Studio Pro

    Hello,
I produced a 17minute DVD a few years ago, shot SD with a Panasonic DVX 100a.  Edited in Final Cut Pro 6.  They have asked me to burn a couple more DVD's for them.  When I imported the assets 2 pass M2v & ac3 audio and burned the DVD with a bit rate of 6.5 to 7. the image quality is really low.  I previously ran all FCP through Compressor, Highest quality, best etc.
Someone told me that going back to FCP and using a de-interlacing filter applied to the project would help with image quality.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I know that going to a DVD will never look as good as my sweet 27" monitor, but the image seems blown out (hot) and the colors unsaturated and a bit too grainy.  It seems more so then I remember the project looking. I am using DVD Studio 4.
So is there any steps that can help me have a SD project edited in Final Cut Pro 6... use Compressor... 2 pass highest quailty 90 min DVD... to DVD Studio Pro 4 and get the best quality I can get.  I appreciate any guidance you can give me.
    Thanks,
    Jan

You may find that Photoshop does a better job of resampling down to your SD PAL resolution. When DVDSP resamples down from your 1024x576 file, you are at the mercy of the hardware or software rendering in DVDSP, depending on your DVDSP prefs. Ideally, I'd work in Photoshop at 720x576, and use the pixel aspect ratio correction to correct the preview aspect ratio in Photoshop.

  • Encoding still image files - quality problems

The project is almost over, and of course problems are now rearing their ugly heads.
The .pct files I'm using for the menus seemed to encode just fine last week, with very little noticeable MPEG2 compression. Now however, without any changes to the files, the menus look terrible with blocks and noise all over the place! What the heck happened?
Here's a before and after comparison screen grab:
    Before: http://www.moonbase9.com/images/apps/dsp/menu_before.png
    After: http://www.moonbase9.com/images/apps/dsp/menu_after.png
The settings in DSP for MPEG2 encoding are the same for both shots. All my video material is pre-encoded .m2v files and AC3 audio. The only part I'm allowing DSP to encode are the .pct menus.
I've also tried encoding the .pct files in Compressor and the same thing happens, no matter what quality setting I use.

    Hi There
Trty deleting the mpegs that DVDSP created for the menus as well as your DVDSP prefs, change the encoding preferences by say 0.5Mbps, let DVDSP encode again see what happens.
    Cheers
