DVDSP v 1.5 +OS 10.4.9 = DVDs play in a standalone player, not apple player

I recently upgraded my OS to 10.4.9, but my DVDSP is version 1.5. Now it will "build" dvds, but it won't "build and format" (burn) dvds. Does this have something to do with quick time 7?
ALSO: I burned the audio TS and video TS folders to a DVD - and it plays, but only in my stand alone DVD player. When I try to play it on my computer Apple DVD player says disc is not supported. What's going wrong?

Turthfully I am suprised DVD SP even runs at all on 10.4.9. It stopped being usuable awhile ago in OS terms. Is your iMac also an Intel Machine? If so you would need the Universal Binary
As to getting something to play that works on standalones but not the Apple Player, it is strange. How did you burn it since the Format from DVD SP is not working?

  • DVDSP DVD's play fine in macs but not in standalone players...

This might be attached to my previous problem, but I thought I would give it a new topic as it is now a new problem.
The DVD's I have made in DVDSP play as they should in DVD Player when inserted into the two iMacs we have, however when we insert the discs into a standalone/set top player, the DVD plays the main track first and THEN goes back to the menu.
What should happen is that a short intro video plays (first play) then onto the Menu where, of course, the viewer makes their selection.
If I stop the DVD by hitting th STOP button on the standalone player several times, I eject the disc and then re-insert it, the DVD plays as it should; showing the first play video and then going to the menu.
Would anyone know a solution to the problem apart from telling the client to hit stop first, ejecting and then re-inserting the DVD?
    Cheers,
    Spookola

I can only tell you what I'd start doing because I don't know what is happening here any more than you do. First I'd buy some other brand -R dvd blanks. Next I'd make some minor change to the DVD SP setup and burn a new set. You should know that burning dvd's on a Mac or PC is not as foolproof as commercially burned dvd's. You CANNOT guarantee compatibility. If you sell 50 copies you WILL find some people that can't play yours because of compatibility issues. For them you can try burning a +R dvd or buy another external burner and try that too. No single solution will guarantee compatibility when burning from a computer and playing on a commercial dvd player. some folks "never have a problem" but in general I think that's because they don't burn that many dvd's for that many people. sooner or later most folks that burn dvd movies on their mac or pc will find somebody that can't read their dvd.

  • DVD I just made in DVDSP plays on set top player, not in my Macs

I just burned a DVD in DVDSP like I've done many times before, but this time the disc won't play on either my G5 or MacBook Pro. It plays just fine in my set top DVD player, though. I don't get any sort of error message, the DVD just won't mount. "Hollywood" DVDs play just fine in both computers, though. I'm using Sony DVD-R 4.7GB discs, which I've always used and have previously worked fine.

check your region on your mac player the first time you open `!!! you might chose a region doesn't match the region you made on your dvdsp project.

  • DVD stutter

I have Final Cut Studio on Power Mac G4 Tower, 1 GHz, 1 GB Dual Processor with External 250 Lacie HD. I am trying to burn a 27 min FCP project with DVDSP on TDK DVD-R 8X. The project will play for 7min, and then stutters and becomes pixelated and just unwatchable. The DVD plays on the mac but not on my JVC DVD player. Could someone walk me through the steps and settings I should be using from FCP exporting using compresser to DVDSP burning settings?
I really appreciate any tips and help I could get.

From the tests I ran, yup...BV is better.
I couldn't believe the difference in colour (BV's were much deeper and richer).
That's my experience too, although I'm not sure I'd call it deeper and richer, more like simply darker. In any case, I'm not sure I would call that a benefit because in my hands Bitvice causes brightness shifts from the original DV source whereas Compressor's MPEG2 output is nearly an exact match for the original. Personally, I'd prefer that the output looks as much like the input as possible. If I want a darker image I'll adjust the video in my FCP sequence, I don't expect the MPEG2 compressor to change my video for me.
However, I'm using NTSC sources and output so maybe you'll see different results with PAL. Also, since I'm using Apple's MPEG2 Playback component to view the finished results I guess that Apple's Compressor has a potential advantage because they are handling both the encode (to MPEG2) and the decode for playback.
In any case, Bitvice is a good product, they have a demo that you can download so it's worth a look to see if you prefer their output.

  • MPEG-2 or dvd setting

i have a 3 min project i am pressing for DVD,
what is the difference between the compressor presets for MPEG 2 and DVD?
also i shot it with a Z1P in DV wide and worked in FCP in anamorpic and have tried compressing in 16:9 and building the dvd in DVDSP in 16:9 but the final burned DVD plays on my Widescreen LCD TV in a wide version but it is letterboxed?
    cheers
    TH

is it because i upgraded from FCP HD version 4,
    i have both options, mpeg2 outputs a mpeg2 file and a DVD PCM Audio, and DVD outputs a mpeg2 file, a AIFF 48/16 and a dolby 2.0.
    another question,
i have made a video, PAL DV 48khz,
i made a dvd of it in DVDSP, compressed with MPEG2 60min high quality widescreen- mpeg2 file and AIFF
it worked perfect when i checked it but the client says that the audio goes loud and soft all the time while viewing it on his DVD player
have i stuffed up somewhere, the audio should be 48Khz all the way right?
thanks for your time if you reply

  • Why have MPEG2 and DVD presets

i have a 3 min project i am pressing for DVD,
what is the difference between the compressor presets for MPEG 2 and DVD?
they are both MPEG2! I only had MPEG2 until i upgraded to FC Studio.
the only diff i can find is 1 can be 60mins and the other does 90mins.
so why have the 2 lists containing 20 options when most are the same?
Also I shot it with a Z1P in DV wide and worked in FCP in anamorpic and have tried compressing in 16:9 and building the dvd in DVDSP in 16:9 but the final burned DVD plays on my Widescreen LCD TV in a wide version but it is letterboxed and streched horizontally a bit
    cheers
    TH

If you simply appled the FC Studio upgrade over an existing installation which inclided Compressor 1.2.1, the old presets were not removed.
All the Standard Definition presets in Compressor 2.0 are prefixed by "DVD".
All the old presets are prefixed with "MPEG-2".
Do not use the old presets with Compressor 2.0
Delete the old presets which can be found in User/Library/Application Support/Compressor/
There is a more elegant method which I believe is accomplisehed by moving that "Compressor" folder to the desktop and restarting Compressor 2.0
A new folder with the correct presets will be built.
But I haven't done this myself, nor did I have to as I wiped my drive before installing FC Studio.

  • DVDSP 3 adds ten pounds of brightness on formatting!!!

I have a MiniDV project which I color-corrected to perfection in FCP HD and encoded using Compressor High quality 4:3 One Pass CBR 6.8 Mbps Best Motion Estimation settings. I reviewed the entire project in DVD SP simulator. I applauded Compressor for its excellence. Everything looked wonderfully accurate. I then proceeded to build and format the project using DVDSP 3 and when I watched the final DVD on two different TVs and computer screens it looks terrible - way too bright and washed out!!! There are basically no blacks. I had to turn the monitors' and TVs' brightness all the way down for it to begin to look right. I found the Video TS folder that DVDSP built the project to and reviewed it side by side with the Mpeg 2 version encoded from Compressor - the Video TS stuff looks awlful - just like the final DVD!!! So I concluded that something bad is happening at that point in the process... During the Build process. I looked over DVD SP 3 preferences to see what kind of control I could have over that part of the process... and it gives me none. So, what can I do to ensure that my stuff looks right on the final media??? I have a color accurate NTSC video monitor that I perform color correction on professionally and a pretty good Apple 23 inch Cinema HD Display. So I know my references aren't messed up. Something messed up is definitely happening once the project is dumped into video TS files. How can I prevent this??? Anyone out there can help me???

I did not adjust the computer display for NTSC color during these tests because I wanted to minimize my variables.
I didn't mean to suggest that you should have used an NTSC display profile, I just wanted to give an illustration of how much a display calibration (or profile) can change the results.
I don't think there is much more you can do at this point other than to go back and make adjustments to your sequence in FCP. This assumes, however, that you are confident that your DVD/TV playback system and environment is a good match for what your customers will have.
You might want to purchase a home theater setup or tune-up DVD that you can use to make adjustments to your TV/DVD mix (a visual calibration). Next thing would be to run a reference clip with a good range of contrast levels, colors, bright and dark scenes through your workflow from end-to-end to make certain that what you see early on is what you get in the final product. Be aware, however, that things like room brightness can have a marked effect on how someone perceives color and tone. You should also review or check on what kind of changes your digital-to-analog converter may have introduced (I assume that you used some type of Firewire-to-analog converter with your NTSC monitor during you color adjustment work in FCP).
As a form of test, you could even try to run duplicates ("rips") of small sections of pre-existing DVDs through your workflow. I suspect that you will find a good amount of information on the internet about video color calibration and FCP, I'm no expert on the subject, but I certainly have an appreciation for how difficult color adjustment and matching can be. Good luck along the way.

  • Asset formats acceptable to DVDSP?

First off, I'm a newbie and am using dvdsp for the first time.
I have a 45 min video I created in FCP. When I exported the project to a Quicktime movie DVDSP would not recognize it or import it (msg - incompatible format). I exported using the option to create a self contained movie (the first time I tried I did not have that checkbox checked).
When I couldn't find an immediate answer to why the QT file wouldn't work, I exported my project using Compressor and created an AC-3 audio stream along with the m2v file. This time DVDSP recognized the video and I could import it - however, the audio only comes in on one track (is this normal?).
A simple explanation (if possible) on compatible formats for DVDSP would be helpful along with the steps to move a video project from FCP into DVDSP. I do have the 4-volume manual for FCP and an Apple Training book on DVDSP but I honestly find them both confusing when it comes to moving assets from one program to the other.
    Thank you for the help.

this is a correct procedure, so you have figured it out OK
there are always a number of ways to do something in software, but your way is fine. DVD needs MPEG 2 video and not a straight Quicktime file from your timeline

  • Quality of DVDSP

OK this is my first attempt at making a DVD so please be patient. I've watched all of the Lynda.com tutorials and read the user manual. I shot my first feature film on a Canon XL2 in 16:9 at 25p, digitised some of the footage directly into FCP, and downloaded other footage via iMovie. I have used Color in some scenes and Adobe After Effects in others. Played back on my iMAC on FCP the footage of the whole film looks great, exported as a Quicktime movie it also looks good on the iMac ( although not 16:9 ) and it is this QT movie that I imported into DVDSP. But when I watch the DVD created by DVDSP on a variety of domestic screens and DVD players, there is consistent poor quality on some scenes only. By going frame by frame on my older G5 I noticed that at one stage , every 12th frame was heavily pixellated. Also some of the AE effects and FCP composited effects are poor on the DVD especially where there is a lot of black. I would be very grateful for any advice. Cheers Doug

Thank you for your help. I'm in a steep learning curve here ( that probably doesn't make sense ) - I'm now getting much better results with Compressor then DVDSP and also utilising Verbatim media.

  • DVDSP burn works on computer NOT desk top player

    I'm using DVDSP 2.0
When I burn a disk it works on my computer but not on a relatively new desk top player. Is this a media problem? I've had some probs before with media but have been using Maxell DVD-R that has worked in previous projects. Any media suggestions?
Or any other suggestions for that matter.
Would an external burner and Toast give me a more consistent burn?

  • Motion project import to DVDSP

I have seen this topic, but haven't seen a solution to my particular problem: when I try to bring a Motion project into DVDSP, I get an Import Error box which reads in part, the files "do not match the current project's video format or their file format is not supported." Both applications are set to NTSC 4:3. Any advice would be appreciated.

I actually don't use Motion myself, although the app is installed. As a test I opened up one of the template projects and simply saved it to the desktop. I didn't add any file extensions, but the icon on the desktop was as I expected it to be... Finder identified it correctly as well.
I imported this in to DVDSP using the import tab of the assets pane... like David there were no issues. It came in fast, and right now is showing a 'yellow' status next to its name.
It can be dragged on to a menu to set the background just as I would expect to be able to do.
If the problem isn't with the preferences, try downloading and installing the proapplication support update for your system. The 10.4 version is here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/proapplicationsupport31macosx104.html
It may not make any difference, but if you haven't already installed it, you probably should!

  • Smooth transitions between menus without using DVDSPs built-in transitions?

My project has two menus: a main menu and a chapter menu. When going from one menu to the other I would like to have the current menu fade out and the new menu fade in. When going from the end of the track or when using the remote menu button after getting to the track from the main menu I would like to have the main menu fade in (and the background for the chapter menu not appear). When using the remote menu button after getting to the track from the chapter menu I would like to have the chapter menu fade in (and the background for the main menu not appear).
I am able to accomplish what I described above by using DVDSPs built-in transitions. However, I have been advised by Trai Forrester that DVDSPs built-in transitions can cause problems: http://www.dvdverification.com/public/155.cfm I have therefore modified my project to not use DVDSPs built-in transitions, but in order to have my project behave as I have described above I found it necessary to use two versions of the main menu and two versions of the chapter menu. One version of the main menu has a video file that fades in the background of the main menu, while the second version of the main menu has a video file that fades out the background of the chapter menu and then fades in the background of the main menu. (Similarly one version of the chapter menu has a video file that fades in the background of the chapter menu, while the second version of the chapter menu has a video file that fades out the background of the main menu and then fades in the background of the chapter menu.)
My project behaves as desired using the two pairs of menu and does not use DVDSPs built-in transitions, so that pleases me. However, the almost-identical copies of the menus annoys me greatly. For an explanation of the programming principles that lead to my annoyance, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_duplication and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27trepeatyourself for elaboration.
Is there a way to have just two menus instead of two pairs of menus and achieve what I described above without using DVDSPs built-in transitions?
Looking forward to being surprised by a clever solution,
    John Link

Since you have no audio or motion then try the jump to loop point script. Either way would be fine.
I played around with that a little bit and it seems that to get all the fade-outs I'd like to have would require several scripts and keeping track of SPRM 7. I think that I am going to abandon all of the fade-outs but keep the fade-ins. I can do that with a single main menu and a single chapter menu and not use the built-in transitions or any scripts at all. The behavior looks good and I think the disc will be very safe.
I agree, duplicating code is not good practice but remember your not writing code here - DVDSP is doing all this work under the hood for you.
I may not be writing code but I am programming the DVD and the principle of non-duplication is violated by almost-identical menus.
If you'd like check out a tool like My DVDEdit or AfterEdit
    http://www.mydvdedit.com/
    http://dvdafteredit.com/
It allows you to see the "real" DVD Structure which tools like DVDSP or Encore hide to make things simple. You can even go through the abstraction layer line by line to see how that SPRM 7 is used (wish I knew why that Sony Player doesn't work for your project).
Be sure to take a look at my report on the RDR-GX355: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1896575&tstart=0 That player also operates incorrectly on Concert for George: http://www.amazon.com/Concert-George-Andy-Fairweather-Low/dp/B0000CEB4V/ref=pdbbs_sr1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1233954620&sr=8-1
Its not rocket science (especially for a programming like yourself) but remember authoring a disc in DVDSP vs a spec tool like Scenarist isn't even in the same ballpark - not even the same sport Last time I heard Scenarist is down to $6000 - it was $20K a couple years ago.
That's a deal breaker! I'll be working with DVDSP in the foreseeable future.
    Also go here:
    http://www.dvd-replica.com/DVD/index.php
it explains the spec in detail
    Thanks. I'll take a look.

  • DVDSP creates HVDVD_TS folder - disk won't play

When I attempt to create a DVD I get one that will play on my Mac but not in a standard DVD player - I've tried several. DVDSP creates a disk with one folder - HVDVD_TS containing .BUP and .EVO and .IFI files.
A start with Final Cut Pro with files either created in Compressor or QuickTime. I have tried h.264, Apple ProRes 422, or straight to MPEG2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You created a HD DVD disc, which only plays in some (now defunct) HD DVD players. To create a disc that will play in standard DVD players, you must create a SD DVD.
In your Outline, click on your disc then look at the Inspector. Under the General tab change your setting from HD DVD to SD DVD.

  • Exporting QT Movie from DVDSP?

Hi There. I'm working with subtitles for the first time. FCP seems pretty clunky with subtitles so I was going to use a subtitle list with DVDSP. But in addition to building a DVD, I want to export my movie wiht subtitles as QT to post on the web. Is this possible? Any ideas?

No, you need to back to your original video from FCP and use that.

  • DVDSP not compiling after OS upgrade

I have a new problem. After upgrading from Mac OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.3, when trying to burn a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2, I get the message "Formatting failed. Building was not successful." The Log says "Compiler File Error."
